BJCn On July 18, Adventures in HealthCare campers hit the ground running onto the path of health care careers across BJC.

Adventures in HealthCare Camp, a week-long summer program coordinated by BJC School Outreach and Youth Development, exposes young minds to the complexities and excitement of health care careers.

Campers, in grades seven and eight, were at Barnes-Jewish, Barnes-Jewish St. Peters, Christian, Progress West and St. Louis Children’s hospitals and Missouri Baptist Medical Center. The students were given an opportunity to get a closer look at health care career options, and saw how diverse the options can be.

Campers visited and experienced a range of departments, including chemistry labs, pharmacy, simulation labs, radiology, occupational therapy and more. Although the camp was only a week long, the memories will guide the campers as they decide what career to pursue, helping them to make the best career decisions in the future.

Adventures in Healthcare Camp 2016:an everlasting experience Q: What was your favorite

part about the camp? A: “It had to be the OR. They had us get scrubbed in and we got to see what an actual OR looks like — not just like on TV — and they let us touch some of the tools and learn how to put on the gloves properly — and we also learned about anesthesia.”

– Naila Alazab, Barnes-Jewish

St. Peters Hospital

Q: What things can you take away from your experience?A: “I guess that there are a lot of different jobs in the health care field and every job is important — and they all play a role in making the hospital function.”

– Maggie Braes, Barnes-Jewish Hospital

Q: What was your favorite activity and why?A: “Going to the SIM center because it was amazing how the technology made it look so realistic.”

– Max Knight, St. Louis Children’s Hospital

What part of the camp influenced you most?“Going to the lab influenced me a lot because it seemed really cool to me. It might be something I’d want to do.”

– Isaiah McKay, Christian Hospital
