Example 1) Robotized system for stone-working
• Robotized system for the reproduction of marble artifacts
• The customer was a system integrator having a contract with a manufacturingSME (benefiting of a regional funding)
• Enabling technologies: vision systems,
robot control
• Trough the developed solution, traditional marble-working companies can continue their activity in Italy
©ITIA-CNR 9
Example 2) Virtual reality for steel factories
• System of Virtual reality supporting the configuration and the commercial offering of machines for steel factories
• The customer was a supplier of machinery for steel production
• Collaboration with Politecnico di Milano to offer an integrated solution (networking for innovation)
• Enabling technologies: virtual reality, simulation, systems interoperability
• The developed solution allows the customer to be more competitive and to offer manufacturers high added value in technology acquisition phase

Innovation projects: EXPLORE EU FP7
Goals:
• to unleash the full potential of the knowledge accumulated in European research project
• to promote and support the exploitation of R&D results, mainly by gathering resources to disseminate (models, case studies, demonstrators) and prepare commercial exploitation, cross-fertilisation, education and standardisation
Examples of results:
• web resources and innovation handbook supporting companies’ innovation capabilities
• map of regional specializations and research results to match demand and offering

• Not at standard use, yet (inaugurated in 2013)
• Technology suppliers very interested
• De-manufacturing companies already “in the business” are interested
• They are currently participating to pilot plant activities inside an “industrial interest working group”
• Activity of “creating the innovation community” around the pilot plant
• How to know that a pilot plant exists (marketing of pilot plants)?

The policy-oriented activity
ITIA is a promoter of the National Technology Cluster on intelligent Factory and of the Lombardy Cluster on Intelligent Factory

Intelligent Factory”
Association “Lombardy Cluster Intelligent Factory”
May 2012 Ministry of research:
“Call for proposal of strategic plan and project proposals for Clusters”
January 2012 Lombardy Region:
“Call for initiatives oriented to the creation and empowerment of high-technology
districts through research, innovation and education”

Difficulties
• Hard to explain companies this complicated governance at National/Regional level
• Companies, especially SMEs, do not perceive immediately the strategic value of participating to Clusters
• A strong diffusion activity is needed
• Essential to have the endorsement of the Institutions
©ITIA-CNR 37
Conclusions
• Innovation is addressed at different levels in the frame of a coherent strategy (innovation services, infrastructure development, policy and clustering)
• Important conditions to play this role are: • The direct involvement of the institute in the research
phase • The policy-related activity at European, National and
Regional level
• Hard to cooperate with SMEs in innovation, but pilot plants and Technology Clusters are promising avenues
