INNOTECH participates to annual Brigada Eskwela

In line with the opening of classes this 13 June, INNOTECH participated on the annual “Brigada Eskwela” project of the Philippine Department of Education on 2 and 3 June 2016. Staff and partnerscleanedandre-paintedthehallsofCuliatElementarySchoolinQuezonCity,anadopted school of the Center. The Center also donated painting and cleaning materials to Culiat Elementary and High School.

“Brigada Eskwela”, also called the National Schools Maintenance Program, brings together teachers, parents, and community members, including private institutions and local government units, to repair and prepare public schools for school opening. This concretely shows the bayanihan spirit of the community.

INNOTECH re-launches Weaving Identities Toolkit

With the regional integration moving forward to the ASEAN 2025, SEAMEO INNOTECH re-launched “Weaving Identities: A Teacher Toolkit Towards a Southeast Asian Community” on 19 July 2016.

Weaving Identities is a resource kit comprised of information, teaching-learning materials, and support materials about the shared values, history and heritage of the region. The toolkit is designed to provide easy access to a range of learning materials about Southeast Asian Community – its culture, politics, and economy – which can be used as reference materials and/or aid in classroom instruction.

Aside from the previously launched website and printed toolkit, Weaving Identities now has an ePub version which allows users to easily access the toolkit through their mobile devices. It also has a toolkit manual which can guide users to its different features and content. Both website and ePub toolkit are equipped with more resource materials.

Invited guests were introduced to the features of the website and toolkit. Website contents are categorizedintothree:Culture,Politics,andEconomics,whicharederivedfromthethreepillarsof the ASEAN Community. The website also features comparisons, commonalities, linkages, and relevant materials for each sub topic. It also has an upload feature where users can share their own materials. Aside from the previous content of the printed toolkit, the ePub version also includes a manual, references, web links, photo gallery, videos, as well as games that can be used for classroom instruction.

Mr.PhilipPurnell,ManagerofSEAMEOINNOTECH’sEducationalResearchandInnovationOffice(ERIO), said this toolkit is a living resource that will continuously be improved. “We encourage you to share your tools so that other Southeast Asian educators can use it too,” he said. “We hope that these resources will help Southeast Asian educators promote the Southeast Asian Community – weaving various identities, shared histories, and diversity of the countries,” he added.

ASEAN 2025 vision focuses on strengthening regional community building. This is one of SEAMEO INNOTECH’s ways of supporting this vision. Visit the Weaving Identities website to know more about the toolkit and its various contents.

SEAMEO INNOTECH conducts capacity building for ECCD

SEAMEO INNOTECH was commissioned by the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Council to conduct a capacity building program for selected City/Municipal Social Welfare and DevelopmentOfficers(C/MSWDOs).LeadingandManaginganIntegratedECCDProgramaimstostrengthen the competencies of C/MSWDOs to effectively lead and manage the Child Development Centers in the Philippines. Through the three-phase program, participants are expected to develop and implement action plans on improving the delivery of integrated ECCD services and thus strengthen the existing National Child Development Centers and transform the remaining Day Care Centers into Child Development Centers in accordance with the ECCD quality standards.

Phase1isafive-dayface-to-facelearningactivitydesignedtoenabletheparticipantstotakea closer look at the current delivery system of ECCD and broaden their understanding of the ECCDenvironment.Learningsessionshelpedtheparticipantssharetheirexperiences,recognizesuccessfulpracticesanddiscernwhatmakesthemsuccessfulastheyreflectontheirownpractices.At the end of Phase 1, participants were required to come up with their own Re-entry Strategic Action Plan (RSAP), which they will implement in Phase 2.

Through Phase 2, participants had the chance to practice what they have learned from Phase 1. They were required to document at least one ‘good’ integrated ECCD practice which they will share on Phase 3. Phase 3 is a three-day integration session designed to highlight and document ‘good’ ECCD practices and experiences implemented on the ground. This integral session is focused on theself-reflectionoftheintegrativeECCDleader.

First batch of the program was concluded last 27-29 April 2016 in Lingayen, Pangasinan with 35 participants. Batch 2 of the said program is expected to happen on August 2016.

Second Regional SELM focuses on instructional leadership

On 13-20 July 2016, SEAMEO INNOTECH held the Phase 2 of its second offering of the Regional ScholarshipforEducationLeadersandManagers(RegionalSELM)inQuezonCity,Philippines.Twenty-nine school leaders and managers from the 10 SEAMEO member countries participated in the said program.

Regional SELM aims to strengthen the leadership and management capacities of educators in Southeast Asia. Programs offered under SELM address the priority areas of the validated 2014 CompetencyFrameworkforSoutheastAsianSchoolHeads.RegionalSELM’sfirstofferingin2015focusedonStrategicThinkingandInnovationandManagerialLeadership,twooftheidentifiedfivemajor competency strands that needed further capacity building programs.

For its second offering, Regional SELM focused on the strand of Instructional Leadership. Through the week-long Phase 2 of the program, participants were able to share their experiences from their own countries in terms of instructional leadership. Their competencies in the areas of leading curriculum implementation and enrichment, creating a learner-centered environment, and developing appropriate instructional support for teachers were enhanced through the program sessions.Participantsalsohadthechancetocontextualizethediscussionsbyobservingaschoolin the Philippines. At the end of the program, the participants were able to produce concrete action plans according to their school’s priority needs.

Phase 1 of the program, which happened last June 2016 and was conducted using the Center’s online learning platform involved discussion of the challenges and opportunities emanating from the curricular reforms being implemented by each participants in their respective countries. Phase 3 is a post-course online conversation aimed at consolidating the participants’ learning and insights and scheduled to be implemented on the fourth week of August 2016.

INNOTECH facilitates workshop to finalize TTL 1 & 2 syllabi

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED), through the UNESCO Bangkok’s project on “Supporting Competency-Based Teacher Training Reforms to Facilitate ICT-Pedagogy Integration”, drafted sample syllabi on Technology for Teaching and Learning (TTL) 1 and 2 for pre-service teachers.On26-27July2016,SEAMEOINNOTECHfacilitatedthefinalizationofthesaidcoursesyllabi.

A year ago, under the same project, a national workshop was held to update and enhance the country’s existing National Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS), particularly the domain of teacher’s skills in using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning. Through the previous year’s workshop, enhancement of the current Educational Technology (Ed Tech) courses for pre-service teachers was proposed.

OfficialsandtechnicalstafffromCHEDandDepEd,representativesfrom10TEIsacrossthecountry, selected new teachers, syllabus writers, and representatives from UNESCO and SEAMEOINNOTECHparticipatedintheworkshoptofinalizeTTL1and2coursesyllabi.Progressin terms of integrating ICT in the curriculum of the other two countries involved in this project—NepalandUzbekistan—wasalsopresentedtogetherwiththecurrentpracticesofothercountriessuch as Singapore, Australia, Korea, and Myanmar.

AccordingtoDr.AmeliaBiglete,DirectorofCHED’sOfficeofProgramsandStandardsDevelopment, a number of accomplishments have been achieved since the previous workshop. These are the proposed IT competency standard, pedagogy outcome, course outcomes, and the course syllabi. “Next step is to determine how to implement training for teachers who will handle the TTL,” said Dr. Biglete. She also added that once the syllabi have been approved, it will be disseminated to teacher education institutions for adaptation.

The Korean Funds in Trust (KFIT)-funded project on “Supporting Competency-Based Teacher Training Reforms to Facilitate ICT-Pedagogy Integration” aims to enhance the capacities of its member states to review and improve teacher competencies and effectively integrate ICT in the teachingandlearningprocess.TogetherwithNepalandUzbekistan,thePhilippineshasbeenchosenbytheUnitedNationsEducational,ScientificandCulturalOrganization’s(UNESCO)regionalofficeinBangkokfortheproject’spilotimplementationintheAsia-Pacificregion.

INNOTECH staff plans for better knowledge and research dissemination

RepresentativestaffandpartnersfromthedifferentofficesofSEAMEOINNOTECHgatheredon3 June 2016 for a one-day workshop to discuss plans on disseminating the Center’s knowledge and research products. The workshop was jointly facilitated by the Educational Research Unit in collaboration with the Information Management Unit.

The workshop aims to develop a more strategic research dissemination plan for the knowledge andresearchproductsoftheCenter.Asoneoftheissuesidentifiedduringthelastgoverningboard meeting, the Center gives high importance to increasing the reach of its products as well as measuring its impact to its stakeholders. The workshop was done just in time as the Center transitionstoits9thfive-yeardevelopmentplan,whereonestrategicgoalistoincreasetheregional reach, client focus and visibility. This workshop is one of the Center’s initiatives to reach this goal.

A follow up workshop is set to happen in August 2016.

INNOTECH retains ISO certifications

SEAMEO INNOTECH had successfully passed the recent surveillance audit conducted by SGS Philippines,alocalaffiliateoftheSociétéGénéraledeSurveillanceGroupofCompaniesinGeneva,Switzerland,on17July2016.TheCenterwasabletomaintainitscertificationstoISO9001:2008 on quality management systems and ISO 29990: 2010 on learning services for non-formal education and training.

ThesecertificationsreflecttheSEAMEOINNOTECH’scommitmenttocontinuouslydeliverqualitymanagement system and effective provision of the Center’s services and products in the areas of training, research, and knowledge management.

INNOTECH launches its new five-year development plan

A better future for every learner in Southeast Asia – this is what INNOTECH envisions for the next fiveyears.Focusingmoreonitsstakeholders,theCenterhopestoseeitsprograms,projects,andservices impact the education system and its stakeholders to provide learners a better future. On 12July2016,INNOTECHlauncheditsplansandstrategiesforthenextfiveyearstoachieveitsvision.

To make the vision a reality, INNOTECH developed strategic goals that will guide the direction of its Center programs and projects. Strategic goals are as follows: 1) Regional relevance and leadership; 2) Regional reach, client focus and visibility; and 3) Adaptive and responsive resource base.

As part of the launch, the Center put up a photo exhibit featuring nine outstanding stories of its stakeholders. Photos were submitted by staff and partners who have seen different learners as they go through their assigned tasks. Stories vary from children, to school heads, to even INNOTECH staff members. Game booths were also prepared to introduce the new strategic goals of the Center in a simple and fun way.
