WELCOME INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS!

The International Committee is comprised of the Innis International Programming Don, Graham, and two International Ambassadors, Karen and Lanxin. Together they are here to aid in the smooth transition of international students to Innis, AND to provide cross-cultural programing to all Innis students, international and domestic! This year we are excited to bring to you our “Canadian Conversations” series. Come meet us at Clubs Day during Orientation, join our committee and come to our informational and social events starting in September!

A message from Graham, your International Programming Don:

Welcome to Innis, home to some of the nicest folks in Toronto! I’m your International Don this year. I’m from Saskatchewan, which though still in Canada, is regarded by some Torontonians as a foreign country (mainly because I play up the differences, which I can do because no one’s been there!). My major is history, with minors in drama and creative writing (which baffles my friends in economics). In my spare time, I like to write, play jazz, and read as much as possible. You can pretty much always find me around the building (Innis Residence), doing something. When I’m not living the Don life, I’m running Innis Jamz, working with the History Students’ Association, or studying frantically. Come talk to me about transitioning to the city, university life, and old books and music.

Commuter Students

Over 75% of the students at the University of Toronto make the commute to campus each day, and we’re here to help! We can provide information and resources to assist you in managing your time, money and energy as you make the trip downtown. Commuter students are vital to the programs and services that we offer through the Office of Student Life and the Innis College Student Society, in which we strongly encourage our Innis students to participate. At Innis, we strive to make our spaces as commuter-friendly as possible.

Got a bike and want to lock it up while you’re on campus? Register it at the Front Desk of the Innis Residence to access the secure underground bike cage at 111 St. George St. The ICSS also offers various “Commuter Breakfasts & Lunches” throughout the year, along with monthly TTC Metropass draws. Make sure you read the Student Life newsletter to find out when they’re happening, along with all the other social events they have planned for our commuting students. Safety Information for Students

Several offices recently joined together to create safety.utoronto.ca, a website that acts as the first door to other resources and services, both on and off-campus.

The site provides student, staff and faculty with information on a number of tri-campus resources relating to safety programs and services, as well as emergency resources for those requiring immediate assistance.

Listed services and resources include:

• Campus Police • Community Safety Office • 24-hour Off Campus Crisis Resources • Emergency Housing Services • Work Alone Program • Assault Counselling • Safety Abroad Program • U of T Health & Wellness Services • Sexual Harassment Office • WalkSafer Programs • Self Defence Programs

The website also holds information on the Presidential & Provostial Advisory Committee for the Prevention & Response to Sexual Violence

such as updates on the committee work, membership, and resources for victims of sexual assault and guidance for those that may be supporting a disclosure of sexual violence.

Work on-campus

Working on-campus throughout the school year, or over the summer, can be a great way to explore different careers, build skills that you enjoy using, make some extra money and get experience that will impress employers! As with any job search, to find a job on-campus it’s important to know what kinds of skills you would like to develop as well as what kind of job you are looking for. The trick is finding one that is in line with your interests.
