j T is notified, for general information that the Common-] wealth Government have informed the German Governmentthat they do not intend to exercise their rights under para-graph 18 of Annex II. to Part VIII. of the Treaty of Versaillesto seize the property of German nationals in Australia in theevent of a voluntary default by Germany in the performanceof her obligations under Part VIII. of the aforesaid Treaty.This undertaking applies to all forms of private propertybelonging to German nationals in Australia or under Aus-tralian control.

Dickson, Chief of the Division of Economic Botany of theCouncil The ,salary offered - is '£800 to £1,000 per annum,depëndent,on qualifications.` .

INVESTIGATION OF THE FLYING Fox.

Y joint arrangement between the Governments of NewSouth Wales and Queensland and the Council for

Scientific and Industrial Research, a stun has been made avail-able to meet the expenses of a systematic biological study ofthose species of flying fox which are a pest in certain parts ofAustralia.

Applications are invited from qualified zoologists for theposition of investigator, at a salary of £600 per annum, tenablefor two years. The sum of f300 will be available for expenses.The question of continuing the work for a further period willbe considered during the latter half of the second year.

The investigator will be required to study the biology of theanimal, having in mind always, that the ultimate object of thework is the attainment of a satisfactory method for large scaledestruction of a serious pest. He will also be required to seekquantitative evidence as to the ravages of the animal, andobtain as accurate an estimate as possible of the, losses it : iscausing to the fruit and other industries of New South Walesand Queensland.

It is thought that such work may attract a young Universitygraduate with some research experience, who would regardthis inquiry as a suitable subject for a thesis for higher degree.A successful worker should have no difficulty in finding Oppor-tunity for further work in Australia at the end of his tenure.

Applications should reach the undersigned not later than IstSeptember, 1928. The successful applicant will be required totake up his duties as soon as possible after the selection hasbeen made.

HE Council for Scientific and Industrial Research invitesapplications for the position of Assistant Chemist to

assist in soil investigations in the Murray River IrrigationAreas. Applicants should possess a University degree inscience ( Honors chemistry or chemistry and geology) , and pre-ferably have had some post graduate training. Previous ex-perience in agricultural chemistry is not essential.

The officer appointed will have his head - quarters at the WaiteAgricultural Research Institute, University of Adelaide, GlenOsmond, South Australia. The initial salary will be £300 -f400according to training and experience.

The successful applicant will be required to begin duties onor about the 24th September. He will be appointed initiallyon probation for a period of twelve months, but thereafter hemay be appointed as an officer under section 14A of the Scienceand Industry Research Act 1920 -1926, in which case he wouldbe eligible to contribute to and receive benefits under the Com-monwealth Superannuation Fund.
