News Briefs from arouNd saMahikeng - Premier Thandi Modise says the murder of an NUM shop steward at Lonmin’s Rowland shaft near Rustenburg on Monday was cruel and senseless. “One death in the ongoing conflict is a death too many as it reopens old wounds,” she said. NUM said a female shop steward was shot dead while walking to the office. North West police confirmed that a woman was killed, but did not confirm that she was a NUM shop steward. Modise said the shooting undermined peace ef-forts in the region. Assassinations have character-ised rivalry between NUM and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU). “It is appalling to still have people who resort to vicious acts in spite of the Marikana peace accord and framework for peace signed early this year. We convey our condolences to the family and call on community to provide police with information that will assist their investigation,” she said. Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said it was tragic that the murder happened days before the 16 August Marikana shooting anniversary. “Violence remains endemic in the area. This latest atrocity demonstrates that the framework agreement for a sustainable mining industry is not being effectively implemented,” he added.

Bloemfontein - A bridegroom has been found guilty of arson for burning down a conference centre that cancelled his wedding booking. The man, Jean Greyling, 28, pleaded guilty when he appeared at the Regional Court. A conference centre at the Emoya Estate was destroyed in a fire, and he was blamed for it. The wedding ceremony booking was apparently cancelled the previous day because deposits were not paid. In his plea Greyling said: “It broke my heart to see my future wife in tears the whole day.” He admitted that he set fire to the building dur-ing the morning of July 27. “I did not think the whole building would be destroyed,” Greyling told the court. He contacted the police’s investigator about a week after the fire to confess to the crime. He will be sentenced next month. He married his girlfriend Lianne Meyer-Bekker at a restaurant at the Loch Logan Waterfront.

Ulundi - The ANC says slain Councillor Makhosonke Msibi recruited thousands of members for the party. Msibi, a branch chair-man in Ulundi, was shot dead on Sunday. Provincial ANC secretary Sihle Zikalala said: “He ensured that the ANC was on course to emerge as the dominant force in the area.” Police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge said a man shot him several times at his home. “A man knocked at the door soon after he re-turned home from a meeting in Nongoma. His son opened and a man fired shots at him when he emerged. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene. A murder case has been opened, the motive is not yet known and no arrest has been made.” Zikalala said political killings indicate politi-cal bankruptcy among those who had been re-jected by the people. “These acts simply serve to make us even more determined to entrench free political activity throughout KZN.” He added that Msibi was shot dead barely hours after he had welcomed hundreds of new members from the IFP and NFP in Nongoma.

Cape Town - A man accused of killing a girl and dismembering her body appeared in the Blue Downs District Court on Monday. The case against Johannes Christiaan de Jager was transferred to the High Court, the case postponed until 13 September for a pre-trial conference, and trial set down for October. De Jager allegedly mur-dered Charmaine Mare, 16, in January, while stay-ing at her home in Kraaifontein. De Jager is also alleged to have raped and mur-dered prostitute Hiltina Alexander in May 2008.

He faces charges of murder, aggravated robbery, defeating the ends of justice, dismembering a corpse and fraud. It was alleged that he buried Mare’s partially burned torso in a deserted piece of ground in Kraai-fontein, and that he hid her arms and legs in a carton in the garage of her home. He also allegedly falsely reported the girl as miss-ing to police. De Jager has already appeared in the Atlantis District Court for Alexander’s alleged mur-der; and the two cases are to be combined in court.

Polokwane - National government will start handing over administration of five depart-ments to newly appointed Premier Stan-ley Mathabatha and his executive. Premier Mathabatha‚ a former South African ambas-sador to the Ukraine, recently replaced for-mer premier Cassel Mathale. National government took over administra-tion of the provincial departments two years ago when the province had an overdraft of R1.7 billion, and could hardly provide ser-vices and pay salaries. Government spokesperson Phumla Williams said Limpopo had achieved a credit balance of R3.3billion by July this year. “The Cabinet agreed that further investi-gations should continue to establish irregu-larities, and where people are found to have flouted procurement procedures‚ disciplinary processes will take effect. A fuller briefing by the ministerial committee will be carried out at an appropriate time‚” Williams added.

On Tuesday this week hundreds of residents were evicted from a dilapidated building at

corner Soper Road and Lily Avenue in Berea. By the time of going to print details of the evic-tion remained sketchy, with the residents claiming to have appealed against the eviction in court. Property owners and residents from around the area told the Inner-City Gazette that they were re-lieved that the building had been cleared as it har-boured criminal elements, posed a health hazard and was not suitable for human habitation. Ex-PM wins presidential pollBamako - Former Prime Minister Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has won the presidential election after his rival admitted defeat in the second round. Ex-finance minister Soumaila Cisse congratulated Keita, 68, who served as prime minister between 1994 and 2000, and wished him good luck. Mali has suf-fered unrest, including an army coup and a French-led military intervention to oust Islamist rebels who had seized the northern part of the country. In the first round Cisse polled 19% against Keita’s 40%, and most of the other candidates then gave Keita their support. Keita will now oversee over $4 billion in foreign aid promised to rebuild the West African state. A 12 600-strong UN Stabilisation Mission in Mali (Minusma) is currently deploying troops, as France begins withdrawing its 3 000 soldiers. The head of the EU election observer mission, Louis Michel, had earlier praised the electoral process for its transparency. On Monday, EU and AU observers again praised the way the second round was carried out. “Malians should be congratulated because they are regaining control of their democratic destiny, which is anyway a tradition in the country,” Michel said.

Tribal clashes claim 100Khartoum - Over 100 people have been killed in clashes between Arab tribes in wrangles over land and cattle in East Darfur state. Conflict between the Rizeigat and the Maalia pastoralist tribes broke out on Sunday north of Al Da’ain the state capital. Both groups claim Kilaikil area as their territory. The conflict escalated after the Maalia claimed that five of their men were killed by the Rizeigat. In retaliation the Maalia raided the Rizeigat, seizing 400 cattle. As the Rizeigat mobi-lized to launch counter attacks community leaders calmed the situation and a settlement was reached for the Maalia to return the cattle. However, the planned handover of cattle never took place and armed Rizeigat attacked Maalia camps. Some 36 Rizeigat and 77 Maalia were killed, while another 150 Rizeigat and 50 Maalia were injured. Tribal fighting has forced over 300 000 people to flee the area. Analysts say the emer-gence of strong militias erodes authority of tribal leaders. Officials in Darfur including regional au-thority head Tijani el-Sissi said tribal violence is a big threat to efforts to implement a peace document signed by two former rebel groups in the region.

Dar es Salaam - Conditions for journalists are worsening, with reporters increasingly being at-tacked and censoring their work out of fear of re-prisal, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ has announced. Worried about their safety, journalists are failing to report the whole story on corruption, political and civil unrest, said the NPO. The media has not operated independently for the past eight years due to fear of reprisals, the CPJ said in its report: The Invisible Plight of the Tanzania Press. Public pro-tests against the government in rural places have gone uncovered as a result of this fear, the report said. The CPJ said recent protests against gas pipe-line construction in the Mtwara region and percep-tions that police used excessive force to disperse crowds went under-reported. MISA chairman Mo-hammed Tibanyendera said police barred coverage of trials for protesters accused of violence. The report called for the government of Jakaya Kikwete to bring new legislation that meets inter-national standards and to scrap repressive laws.

Govt resists rebel extradition bidKigali - Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo says Rwanda will not extradite four wanted rebel leaders to the DR Congo, amid ac-cusations that the rebels are linked to her government. Last month the DRC is-sued arrest warrants for M23 rebel leader Jean-Ma-rie Runiga and command-ers Baudouin Ngaruye, Eric Badege and Innocent

Zimurinda, on allegations of crimes against human-ity, war crimes, torture and other offenses. The UN also said Ngaruye and Zimurinda may be respon-sible for war crimes. Niamey - The government of President Mahamadou Is-soufou is creating an alliance with opposition parties, to avoid instability currently seen in Tunisia and Libya. President Issoufou says the aim is to join ranks against terrorist groups, which are fighting among themselves for control of the region. An al-Qaeda splinter founded by Algerian terrorist Mokhtar Belmokhtar claimed cred-it for a prison break in June and bombings that killed 20 Nigeriens last May. Two Tunisians and a Moroccan were among the suicide bombers in the May attack, Belmokhtar’s Signed in Blood Brigade said in July. It vowed ‘further operations’ in Niger, which shares bor-ders with countries Algeria, Libya and Mali. Instability in Libya provided an opening for Islamist militants driven out of Mali, Issoufou has warned. Last week, he stepped up efforts to meet loyalists and op-ponents, to convince them to form a government that addresses the risk of terrorism in the Sahel region. Political analyst Said Habib says the major concern is infiltration of armed groups from northern Mali into the Sahel region, and especially in Libya, which is suffer-ing from fragile security on its southern borders.

At the Girl Learner Seminar Pro-gramme at Sci-Bono Discovery

Centre on Thursday, Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy urged girl learners to take up careers in science and technology. She said the field holds a po-sition of great importance in the economy, and called on the girls to take advantage of the many opportunities in the science and technical fields in South Africa, because of the serious lack of skills in these sectors. She promised that the Gau-teng Department of Educa-tion (GDE) would support girl learners who strived to perform well despite their backgrounds. “There are plenty opportuni-ties available for those learn-ers who are prepared to strive for success. The GDE offers bursaries to the top learners in all our priority schools. The Gauteng City Region

Academy (GCRA) has many additional bursaries available for learners. So, if you make the effort, we will be ready to support you and assist you to go all the way.” As part of Women’s Month celebrations, Sci-Bono has brought 1 600 girl learners from schools around Gauteng for a two-day Girl Learner Seminar. The invited learners will interact with wom-en role models from industry and academia. There will be presentations and small group discussions aimed at encouraging and edu-cating the girls on how to set personal goals and tackle some of the obstacles they might face in developing future careers. Creecy added that it was worth noting that in 2011, there were 14 316 girls who wrote the physical science exam. Over 57% passed and 653 girls achieved distinctions. In 2012, the number of girls writing physi-cal science increased to 15 297 and the pass rate improved to just under 69% with 600 distinctions. Creecy said that there should be no doubt about girl learners’ abilities to excel in the sciences and technology. “The successful women scientists who par-ticipated in the event were proof of impor-tant contribution that South African women are making to science. The next generation of women in science will have the opportu-nity to do even more.” SAnews.gov.za

Cosatu suspends VaviStaff [email protected]

The National Union of Metal-workers of SA (Numsa) gen-

eral secretary Irvin Jim has an-nounced that Cosatu general sec-retary Zwelinzima Vavi has been suspended. Reports on Thursday said Vavi had

been put on ‘special leave’ follow-ing a Cosatu executive committee (CEC) meeting on Wednesday. Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Cra-ven could not confirm the reports of Vavi’s suspension, saying a state-ment would be released later. Last month, a junior employee at Cosatu accused Vavi of rape. He ad-mitted to having a consensual affair

with her, and she later withdrew the complaint against him. The CEC met on Wednesday to de-cide on possible sanctions against Vavi for the affair. On Thursday Jim said: “We went into that meet-ing explaining that unless they give reasons for the meeting, we would not be be able to declare and secure a mandate from our members.”

He said Cosatu could not just hold meetings without a mandate from its members. On Thursday Jim said Numsa was ‘reflecting on what hap-pened at the meeting’. On Twitter Vavi said: “I commit-ted an error and have apologised. So many people have accepted that apology, but some remain unforgiv-ing, celebrating and rubbing salt.” Zwelinzima Vavi

The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sen-

tenced an armed robber to 13 years in jail. Police Corporate Communications Officer Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele says Zweli Motwane, 26, was con-victed for armed robbery. “On 13 May 2010 three suspects robbed a 55-year-old man at gun-point. The victim was travelling with his family in a car, and when he stopped at a traffic light at cor-ner Commissioner and Mooi streets three suspects tried to open the doors of his vehicle. One of the sus-pects pointed a gun at him while his accomplices managed to open the passenger door.” Warrant Officer Mbele says they grabbed the car keys; took GPSs and a laptop. “A police patrol no-ticed the crime, approached and ar-rested one of the suspects.”

Jazz singer Carmen Lundy will perform at the Standard Bank

Joy of Jazz on the Dinaledi Stage at the Newtown Precinct in Joburg on August 23 and 24. Lundy says she can’t wait to get to meet her fans in South Africa. “I became aware of the South Af-rican’s interest in my music about eight years ago. I got my statement from the Performing Rights Soci-ety in the United States, and South Africa showed up on the play list. It was so thrilling to see that some of my music was playing in your country,” she adds. From a gospel singer with a clas-sical training, Lundy has developed into a first class jazz singer, per-former and educator. “I had been trying for the last few weeks to get some idea of the songs that the audience would be most fa-miliar with, and then I thought why not just go to my statements and see what they have been listening to. I pulled out about seven or eight songs, interestingly most of those songs I had written over the years, which is great for the audience to know me that way. So I decided to include the songs I think the audi-ence will recognise, and also some new songs that haven’t even been recorded yet. I’m going to do a nice mixture of my music that will stem from over the past 10 to 20 years. I hope this will leave everyone with

an impression of who I am now.” She talks highly about her accom-panying musicians. Her pianist is Anthony Wonsey who has worked with Kenny Gar-rett, Nnenna Freelon, Nicholas Payton and Christian McBride. The bassist is Darrell Hall who accord-ing to Lundy is a very accomplished musician in every right. The drum-mer is 22 year old Jamison Ross who is making a name for himself and is a product of the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead, a prestigious jazz pro-gramme for developing young jazz artists. Betty Carter and Billy Taylor started it at the Kennedy Center in 1998/99. After Carter died Car-men Lundy filled the void for the programme, along with trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist George Cables and bassist Chip Jackson and other luminaries. That is where she heard, and was impressed with Ross. “He’s special. He‘s what we love to see in young jazz musicians. We are going to come together, and we’re all very much anticipating our time with you.” To South Africa and to her fans she said: “The future looks bright. The most beautiful thing to me is to be able to bring forth freedom of expression of all kinds. I hope in performance we will personify the beauty and expression of this great art form, and we will give back to the Africans the very thing that they gave us,” she adds.

Famed for the string of international stage block-busters he has created and produced, including Asinamali, Sarafina!, Magic at 4 AM, Mama,

The House of Shaka and Lion of the East among others. Ngema, one of the giants of SA theatre, returns to the stage as an actor for the first time in 27 years. Directed by Christopher John and designed by Sarah Roberts, The Zulu is produced by Africa Ngema and presented by Commit-ted Artists Foundation in partnership with SABC1 with funding from the Na-tional Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF).

Sporting treat at FNBSports Correspondent

The inaugural Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture Day at the FNB

Stadium on Saturday will among other events feature soccer with Bafana Bafa-na playing against 2013 Afcon runners-up Burkina Faso; and the Springboks against Argentina. The brainchild of Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula and Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile com-prises of a series of activities that will culminate in the matches. According to the departments the event is meant to unite the world and South Africa in par-ticular, in celebration of Nelson Man-dela’s legacy. There will also be a music concert featuring DJ Black Coffee, Zahara,

Toya Delazy, Mafikizolo, DJ CNDO, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Salif Keita and the Mahotella Queens. Other artists in-clude David Jenkins, Queens, Umoja, Gcina Mhlophe, DJ Alessandro, Wouter Kellerman, Naima Mclean, Elvis Blue and 1st Project, and Kurt Darren. Mbalula will acknowledge and con-gratulate the national netball team for winning the continental netball title, as well as Springbok player Bryan Habana for becoming the first Springbok player to score 50 test tries. “The minister will also present the na-tional women’s hockey captain Marsha Cox with a vehicle, fulfiling of a prom-ise he made during the celebration of her 300 caps for South Africa, and as part of the women in sport programme,” the ministry says in a statement.

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Masha-tile called on South Africans to continue to celebrate Mandela’s life ‘in order to re-commit to the ideals he dedicated all his life towards achieving’. “It is these noble values that continue to guide us as we seek to build a national democratic society that is truly united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous,” Mashatile said. Mandela, who turned 95 on 18 July, is making a “slow but steady improve-ment” in hospital in Pretoria, where he was admitted over two months ago with a recurring lung infection, although he remains in a critical condition, the Pres-idency said on Sunday. “As Madiba lies in hospital, we con-tinue to keep him in our prayers and thoughts,” Minister Mashatile said.

The day will begin with a football match between the South African Mas-ters against the Italian Masters at 11am, followed by an international friendly between Bafana Bafana and Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) runners-up Burkina Faso at 1:30pm. The Springboks will then tackle Argen-tina in the opening match of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship at 5pm. Former Bafana Bafana captain and captain of The Legends, Lucas Radebe, said he was looking forward to the soc-cer match. “Music and football play a great role in unifying the country. As a country, we are lucky to have Mandela with us as our icon,” Radebe added. The proceeds from the sport and cul-ture event will go towards building the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

Approaching the CAF Champions League match against Egyptian

side Zamalek, Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa says they expect tough opposition against a stronger Zamalek who have an edge over their traditional derby rivals Al Ahly. “The videos we have been studying of several of Zamalek’s matches seem to confirm this assessment,” he adds. De Sa intends to field a similar line-up to the one which beat Al Ahly in Cairo. He however said striker Collins Mbesuma had a 50 percent chance of reporting fit after sustaining injury in the MTN8 victory over SuperSport United on Sunday. Unlike their Champions League game in Egypt, where only a handful of spectators were allowed into the stadium because of political unrest, De Sa hopes for vociferous supporters to provide vocal support for the team. Orlando Pirates’ crucial Champions League match and the Nelson Mandela Day programme at FNB Stadium, featuring Bafana Bafana and the Springboks, will take place on the same day and only a few kilometres away from each other. De Sa also says information he has gathered indicates Zamalek are a better side than Al Ahly. “From what I hear, they have recruited better players and are more organised. As a result they will be tougher than Al Ahly,” De Sa said. Egyptian side Zamalek are in a must-win situation, as they have just one point in Group A, which Bucs lead. De Sa backed his team’s resilience to see them through again.About his team’s tough schedule De Sa says: “It’s been like that for some time, we didn’t even know when we would play Al-Ahly, and our match against AmaZulu had to be moved to a Thursday. This week, our focus is solely on Zamalek.” Meanwhile, Pirates received great news as key defender Siyabonga Sangweni is expected to return to full training this week . De Sa however says Sangweni may not feature in the CAF Champions League game against Zamalek. “Though he has recovered we don’t want to rush him,” he adds.
