Lane MarkingsLane markings separate trafc and alert drivers when it is sae to pass

    other vehicles.

    Yellow Lane Markings

Yellow lane markings separate multiple lanes o trafc going in oppositedirections. You may cross a broken yellow line to pass another vehicle but youshould not cross a solid yellow line except to turn.

lanes but you should not cross a solid white line.

    Changing Lanes and Passing

Other VehiclesOnly change one lane at a time. When changing lanes to prepare or a

turn, do so at least 200 eet beore the turn. Do not weave in and out o lanes, which greatly increases risk o an accident. On the highway, slower vehiclesshould use the lane to the right. Leave the let-hand lane or aster moving orpassing vehicles.

Follow these rules when you are changing lanes:

Make sure that there is no trafc ahead o you in the lane that you wouldlike to enter; and

Check your mirrors or any vehicles that are preparing to pass you; and Briey turn your head towards the lane that you are entering to make sure

Beore returning to the lane in which you were originally driving, use the

    appropriate turn signal.

When Passing Other Vehicles is Prohibited

It is dangerous and illegal to try to pass other vehicles in the ollowingsituations:

A solid yellow line is marked on the drivers side o the center line o theroad.

A yellow, pennant-shaped No Passing Zone sign is posted on the let-hand side o the road, or a white rectangular Do Not Pass sign is postedon the right-hand side o the road.

Turning Left from Specially-Designated Center Lanes

Busy roads on which there are many places a vehicle may make a let turnoten have a center lane designated solely or let-turning vehicles. Always beaware that vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may be entering the centerlane to turn let in ront o your vehicle. Never use this type o center lane orpassing other vehicles.

Designated center lanes or let turns can usually be identied by a sign withalternate directional arrows stating CENER LANE ONLY or with pavementarrows, although some center lanes do not have signs or pavement arrows.

    U-Turns

A U-turn is a maneuver in which a driver changes direction by making a180-degree turn. It is potentially dangerous and should only be undertakenwhen absolutely necessary. Follow these rules when making a U-turn:

Always yield the right-o-way to oncoming vehicles and pedestrians.

Never make a U-turn on a curve in the road or when approaching the cresto a hill or grade.

Never make a U-turn on an interstate highway. Instead, proceed to thenext exit and re-enter the highway in the opposite direction.

    55

Stop or slow Right turn Let turn

Center turn lane with pavement arrows

    Four-way Stops

Te rules or a our-way stop are like those or a two-way stop: Stop andlook or oncoming trafc, and proceed when it is sae to do so. At a our- waystop, the rule is that the rst vehicle to stop at the intersection is the rst toproceed through the intersection. However, you may occasionally arrive at aour-way stop sign at the same time as another driver. In such cases the driverto the right has the right o way. However, i there is any doubt who has theright o way or i there is the chance o a crash, it is better to yield the right o

    way to the other driver.

    Roundabouts

A roundabout is a circular intersection in which trafc enters or exits only

through right turns and proceeds in a counter-clockwise direction. A round-about incoming trafc always yields to the circulating trafc.
