A little good news today! Well . . . sort of!!The summer wasn't all that "swell", but, likeall bad news, the industry will sweep thisunder the carpet and look for a brighter day.And a brighter day just might be around thecorner as the Christmas buying mode isupdated to "hysteria."

But first, an update on what really wentdown over the past few months. "I wasn'tsurprised at the results for September," saysWarner Music Canada president Stan Kuhn,"and while I expect October shipments to bebetter, I don't feel they will be quite as goodas the previous year."

Kuhn goes on to explain that he didn'tthink September would be a good month,"because I thought the industry was kiddingitself through the summer. It's evident nowthat the recession began in April or May andwe were still topping last year's numbers, even though some labels had reduced theiraverage price by lowering CD prices a dollaror more. Nevertheless, shipments out werestill showing increases." He believes that hadsomething to do with those responsible,"not processing returns that were in-houseand continuing to overship. It's very hard to

Anthony and Robinsonnamed to CBC postsGeorge Anthony has been named CreativeHead and Ed Robinson the Deputy of CBC-TV's Arts, Music, Science and VarietyDepartment. They will begin their duties onNovember 29.

Ivan Fecan, Director of CBC TVProgramming, says that their mandate will beto "build on the successes of the past. . . andto support the strong work being done by theproducers who work in these fields."

Anthony is the former Executive Enter-tainment Editor and founding member of theToronto Sun, and is an individual the CBCbelieves has "demonstrated his belief andcommitment to the Canadian star system."

Robinson will be leaving his post asDirector of Finance and Administration forTV Programming at the CBC to take up thenew position. He is one of several managersat the corporation who have made a switchfrom administraive positions to creativeexecutive ones.

turn a ship around if the momentum is goingone way, and people continued to order asthough retail was showing inceases, when infact we now know that the retail business wasreally bad during the summer. It had to cometo an end . . . there had to be a day of reckon-ing, and it happened in August andSeptember. I think October will show a slightdecrease from the previous year, but it will beover September's figures." He speculatesthat year-to-date dollar numbers will bebelow last year's.

Kuhn is also concerned that mostretailers are predicting they are going to doless business this Christmas than last year. "Ithink the consumer is frightened," saysKuhn, "and consequently, 1 think we have toexpect, as an industry, a pretty tough time forthe next six or seven months."

As the heavyweight releases are now be-ing released, it's obvious there is apreponderance of high -ticketed box sets."There's too many box sets," says Kuhn."I'll be interested to see about next Marchand April what sold through. I would feel alittle better if the industry was breaking morenew acts."

Touching on the video scene, Kulinreveals his interest in a U.S. trade report thatU.S. labels are starting to question the cost ofvideos and whether they are, in all cases, worth the expense. Says Kuhn, "I wish peo-ple in the industry wouldn't view the fact thata record company will release a record andnot put a video out as a lack ofcommitment. In many cases, that's why wedo it, because people say if you don't do it,everybody's going to assume you don'tbelieve in the project . . . and that's simplynot true."

Kuhn was asked if he believed videos sellrecords. "It's hard to tell," he answers. "Ican make an argument that certain acts break

Justin Entertainmentscores major signing coupJustin Entertainment has acquired theCanadian rights to Twenty 4 Seven, a majorEuropean dance band, from BCM Records inGermany. I Can't Stand It, the No. 1 12" im-port in Canada, is being rush released andwill be serviced to dance pools across thecountry at the end of this month. The singlefeatures both the original German hiphousemix and the Bruce Forest UK club re -mix.The full album will be released in Januarywith an edited version of the single beingserviced to CHR stations.

Based in Germany, the band has aunique multi -cultural mix, featuring Dutchsinger Nancy Coolen (Wendy James MeetsMichelle Pfeiffer), American DJ TonyHarrison (A.K.A. Captain Hollywood), andHanks And Jacks from Germany and Italyrespectively.

The band has sold more than a millionunits in Europe and have eight gold recordsto their credit. At press time, the have en-joyed 32 weeks on the charts in Italy, 27 inDenmark and Austria, 26 in Germany,Sweden and Switzerland, 25 in Finland andNorway, 20 in Spain and 10 in England.

because of videos, but I can make an equalargument that many records, on which therewere three or four videos, didn't sell. No onecan really determine if it was the video thatbroke the act or the video that didn't help theact. In some cases you want to do a video, inother cases I don't think the video makes anydifference."

It's no secret that Kuhn did not supportthe introduction of the cassette single andnow the returns are beginning to indicatewhat could end up to be a dismal showing."People don't seem to realize that you reallydon't know what you're selling of somethingin this business for a period of at least eigh-teen and up to thirty months, before thereturns drift back." He goes on to point outthat "normally, in good times, accounts andsalesmen resist returns because they're amessy thing to do . . . it's difficult to handle. But eventually they do filter back. I havesome concern about the number of cassettesingles that are starting to be returned and Ifeel it will only get worse in spite of the factthe industry in many cases is cutting offproduction."

Kuhn, however, is optimistic aboutWarner's prospects over the next twomonths, "due mainly," he says "to ourstrong new releases."

Flip flop of weeks paintsinaccurate stats pictureThe CRIA stats for September revealed thatoverall net sales were down 21 percent fromthe same period last year (RPM - Nov. 3/90).This prompted CBS president Paul Burger tocomment that within the industry, "there wasa bit of concern."

He goes on to explain, however, that hewasn't satisfied with the figures, "whichdidn't jive with the month we had." Ap-parently, major companies report in differentways, all, with the exception of one, definingtheir weeks by the Friday of the week. "If thefirst of September were a Friday," saysBurger, "that would be called the first weekof September, even though there was onlyone September day in that week. Whereas ifthe first of September were a Saturday thatweek would have been called the last week ofAugust.

"From year to year you get switchesfrom month to month because obviously ifevery month was a four week month youwould have 48 weeks in a year." He goes onto point out that "once a quarter you have aweek that flip flops and it usually flip flopsback and forth from month to month . . . sowhat happened in August of 1989 was a five -week month and in 1990 September was afour -week month. It is that small differencewhich accounted for the drop."

He does stress, however, that "clearlythe summer period was not good at retail, butthere's no doubt that towards the end ofAugust, things started to pick up a bit."

Apparently it is easier for some com-panies to end the week on a Friday, whichgives the company the weekend to run all themonth -end reports and get the computers up-dated. It's expected that reporting procedureswill take into account the four and five -weekflip flops in the future.

with Elvira CapreeseWhat a show . . . what a show! Mostrecord companies invite me to theatre andmovie openings, if they have the soundtrack. One of the best in recent memory was theopening of Les Miserables, an invitation, bythe way from Gino Empry. Anyway . . . I wasat the press gathering when Garth Drabinskyannounced there would be a Canadian castrecording of highlights from Phantom OfThe Opera, and while talking to him he askedif I had seen Phantom. Of course, I hadn'tand told him so. He was a little disturbed, tosay the least. Gerry Lacoursiere, who nowheads up the Canadian PolyGram empire, was nearby and overheard our conversation, and being the PR smoothie he is . . . alwayslooking after details, that is, I had thepromise of a couple of tickets, and hedelivered. I finally saw the show this pastweek . . and what a show! I'm only sorry Iwasn't there opening night, but then Gerrywasn't head of the company then. This

Toronto production, after more than a year'srun, is packed with entertainment highsrarely seen in live theatre. What a show!(EC: Wish I knew someone with influence!)When it comes to dailies . . . I have toadmit The Globe And Mail is a notch up onthe rest. They dig deep and come up withsome startling facts about news happeningsthat the others skim over. They also seem tohave a nice freedom for their writers. I

mentioned a few weeks back about BrianFawcett, a West Coast writer for the Globe, who used the term "dickhead", kind of agentle, non -expletive. Now Jay Scott, whodid a piece on country music in the Nov. 5thGlobe, used the expression "pissed off". I'veused it before . . . but never in print, but hey,it looks good in print. I'm pissed off that I'venever used it before. (EC: What next . . . ?)

Hot stuff ... ! Holy jumpin', Roger Bartel, you sure know how to heat up a guy'stummy. Roger squired the lead singer ofSawyer Brown, Mark Miller, and the band'smanager, "T.K." Kimbrell, to dinner atToronto's Sante Fe Restaurant. The guystook a break from their tour of the Maritimesto have supper with a few of the people fromCHAM and myself. After several gallons oficed tea, which seems to be their nationaldrink, and it did kinda put out the fire of therestaurant special, they were off to St. John'sto continue their tour. (EC: How do you spellrelief . . . ?)

If you want to know something about therecord business . . . don't ask a radio salesguy. With the exception of good ole Perrydown at CHUM . . . they don't. They thinkit's the record retailers who pay for theads . . . and we know better . . . don't we?(EC: We sure do . . . !)

The power struggle that failed ... ! If youthink there's an air of uncertainty in therecord business . . . you should be on TheHill. The guy who thought he had it all tohimself . . . is still second banana. Talk abouta ship without a rudder. (EC: En francais?)

What's in a name . . . ? Company namescan be very expensive, particularly if they'regoing to be mounted as a neon sign. Sony hasit pretty good . . . with four letters. But whatabout Matsushita . . . with ten! That'sEXPENSIVE! (EC: Hang the expense, it's abillion dollar business . . . !)

Juno comedy award ... ! I mentioned lastweek that the Juno Comedy Award is goneand will no longer be given. Now . . . thisweek, we've been advised that a new BestHard Rock/Metal Album Juno will take itsplace. (EC: In other words . . . nothingchanges!) Then why are you laughing!!(EC: I'm still thinking about the Rap award!)Bring back the comedy award!

A little good news today! Well, isn't itswell to know that our neighbour's presidentlikes country music! In fact, George Bushspeaks highly of Anne Murray, particularlyher song, A Little Good News Today. I'vebeen waiting with baited breath for the kingof Oka and all us other Canadians to comeout with similar views. A very famouskeyboard friend of mine told me that ourOttawa 'Monarch happens to like alternativemusic. In fact, he's even toyed with the idea

of touring as a minstrel. (EC: A great follow-up profession . . . !)

Growing optimism signals Word appears to be filtering down from some

sectors of the industry that the next two months could bring sales back up to an accep-

table level. "If you take a look at the Top 10 or Top

20 releases," says CBS Records Canada president Paul Burger, "there are some pretty

diverse and interesting records . . .

and from what I can understand from retail, that

interest is starting to attract people back into the stores."

The records show the summer period was worse than dismal and the initial showing for October was being predicted as not that

great either. However, as Burger points out, "there was some concern in October that the

weekends were good and the weekdays a bit quieter, but over the past couple of weeks,

we've seen a strengthening, even in the mid- week sales at retail."

There has been a heavy concentration by some labels on box sets, designed obviously

for the Christmas buyer. Burger was asked if he thought this would deter sales of other

product. "I think there's a tremendous amount of box sets coming out this year," he

says. "Is there too much? I think, so far, the consumer is telling us no! The reaction

to the Led Zeppelin box set is absolutely outstanding

. . . and a very high-priced item

at that. Retail seems to be quite excited about

Allen and Feldman cut loose from Penta

It as been learned that as of November 6, 1990, Bruce Allen and Sam Feldman have

resigned as directors of Vancouver -based Penta Entertainment. The company has ap-

parently been in limbo for some time while the five directors, Allen, Feldman, Lou Blair,

Bruce Fairbairn and John Ford, attempted a reorganization.

All enquiries with regard to Penta should now be directed to Lou Blair who can be con-

tacted at 604-689-7070.

Cinram gains US base with PRC Tape purchase

On Ocober 18, it was confirmed that for an undisclosed amount of money, Cinram Ltd.

acquired PRC Tape Company Inc. of Rich- mond, Indiana. The plant, which specializes

in pre-recorded tapes, is one of the largest in the US, with over 200 employees and a

100,000 square foot facility. The purchase was funded entirely out of Cinram's cash resources and will provide a

much -sought-after American foothold for the company. Isidore Philosophe, President and Chief Executive of Cinram, says the ac-

quisition "will make a positive contribution to Cinram's operations."

Philosophe goes on to say that PRC Tape will move into video technology and CD

manufacturing, enabling them to be the first in the US to use a new on-line laser

technology devised by Cinram which reduces CD contamination.

"We are very excited," says Philosophe. "We already have a good and decent reputa- tion in the States, and (this purchase) will

enhance that."

fair-to-middlin Christmas the box sets and they're already seeing quite a

turnover on this product. I think, frankly, that anything that generates excitement and

brings consumers into the stores is really what we're all working towards. At the end of the

day we have to rely on the professionalism of retail to take the consumer, who has already

moved himself to walk into the shop, to en- sure that he walks out with some music in his bag and preferably not just a blank cassette

as some of them tend to do." Burger takes a swipe at retail as he

stresses, "Frankly, I would hope that sanity would prevail at retail, in terms of, again, not giving away our hit product at prices that don't allow all of us to enjoy the benefits of

everything we're working for." He goes on to point out that "there's a

lot of concern with the heads of virtually all the major retail chains with respect to some of the price discounting and price wars going on over product that has limited availability.

I think that's a very healthy discussion that's going on, because we've often commented about the way product is placed in terms of some of the commercial policies and some of

the pressures that are put back on us by retail when retail itself takes some of the biggest profit -potential product and essentially gives

it away in hopes it will spur additional business." With the proliferation of the box sets

and the retail wars, Burger was asked if he thought it would be difficult to break new

acts over this period. "Sure it's going to be difficult," he answers, "and as the economy

gets tighter it will get even more difficult." What that forces us to do," he suggests, "is

be more professional and be better at picking the artists and the records in which we invest our effort

. . . taking that and being more

creative, really, in terms of the marketing plans and the way we work with the artists

and with the retail chains in generating en- thusiasm at the consumer level."

In conclusion, Burger makes the point, "Someone said to me 'Christmas is coming

on December 25th.' I thought that was a helluva revelation, especially after Kim Zayac

made a comment to someone last week that CBS was calling November 26th Boxing Day,

because of all the box sets we are releasing on that date, including The Byrds."

EMI Music first in with support for Philips' DCC

Jim Fifield, President and Chief Executive Officer, EMI Music Worldwide, has an- nounced EMI Music's support for the Philips' Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) system. In making the announcement, Fifield

said, "We at EMI Music are excited by the Digital Compact Cassette prototypes we have

seen and heard and believe this system will of- fer the music industry a great opportunity to

move to the next generation of digital tape." Fifield was also pleased that concerns

over home taping are being considered by Philips, noting that "Copy protection as agreed with the recording and publishing in-

dustries will be a major consideration in our support of DCC."

Fringe obscenity case to trial in Ottawa The obscenity case against Toronto record

company Fringe Product and its distributor, The Record Peddler, went to trial November

5 in an Ottawa courtroom. The Crown has alloted two weeks for the

trial, which is viewed as an important precedent -setting case. A three-man, nine

- woman jury will decide whether Fringe Pro-

duct and The Record Peddler are guilty of distribution and possession for the purpose

of distribution of obscene material for pro- ducing two albums by Victoria B.C. band Dayglo Abortions. The charges were brought against the companies by Nepean police in

July, 1988. Fringe Product's Angus MacKay says

the companies have already been billed more than $50,000 in legal fees for the preliminary.

hearings, and have had to scale down opera- tions as a result.

In a similar case in the United States, members of the rap group 2 Live Crew were recently found not guilty of obscenity on charges stemming from a performance of

songs from their controversial album As Nasty As They Wanna Be. Last month, a

London, Ontario retailer was charged for selling copies of the 2 Live Crew album.

Virgin heads into Xmas with power Cancon Virgin Canada is wrapping up a "great year," and is heading into the yuletide season

with four of their top releases being Canadian, a feat that Ian Marchant, National

Sales and Marketing Coordinator for the label, says is a "real first for Virgin

Canada." The Northern Pikes, Rita MacNeil,

Colin James and newcomers World On Edge are the acts that Virgin is releasing, and

Marchant declares that it is testament to the label's belief in Canadian talent.

"It has always been in the cards from day one at Virgin to sign and develop Cana-

dian talent," he says. "We always wanted to be more than just a distribution arm for

Virgin around the world." Virgin is currently looking at other Canadian acts to sign, and Marchant says

that they are confident there "is plenty of great talent out there."

The Pikes and James have already gone platinum in Canada, and MacNeil is well on

her way to that certification as well.

Janie Oliver joins Justin Entertainment as Director of National Promotion. Oliver has chalked up a wide and varied work portfolio

in radio over the years: as an on -air producer for both CHUM AM and FM in Toronto, and as an on -air personality with Rock 95 in

Barrie, In her new position, Oliver will be

responsible for all national promotional and marketing duties for Justin Entertainment

and its roster of artists. The above announcement was made by

Jeff Burns, president of the Toronto -based Justin Entertainment.

COVER STORY by Jill Lawless

Mary-Lu Zahalan reaps rewards of experienceMary-Lu Zahalan is back on the Canadianmusic scene, and she's discovering it's likeshe hasn't been away at all.

The Quebec -born singer first came to at-tention in 1982 with an album called ThinkOf Me on the now -defunct Sefel label. Thealbum won Zahalan a nomination for theMost Promising Female Vocalist Juno, and asubsequent independent single in 1985 waswell received by Adult Contemporary sta-tions. Her new album on Justin Entertain-ment, titled simple Zahalan, is the singer'sfirst release in five years, but they are yearswhich have been productively spent.

Zahalan, who holds a degree in TheatreArts from Sheridan College, spent a year inthe mid -eighties touring as part of the Cana-dian company of the musical Pump Boys andDinettes. She also toured the Middle East forthe Canadian Armed Forces, an experienceshe calls "the highlight of my performingcareer." Along the way, she found time tobecome a parent. "It's not like the last four

Stale at the top. On the Album chart, thetop seven places remain the same. That is sureto change next week, though. Paul Simon'sRhythm Of The Saints bullets up to No. 8and Vanilla Ice's To The Extreme leaps allthe way to No. 9.Still No. 1 Suicide Blonde from INXS re-mains on top of the Hit Tracks chart for thesecond week. With only 4 letters in theirname, it is one of the shortest names to hitNo. 1, but not the shortest. Name the act withthe shortest name to have a No. 1 hit.

Big Debut . . . Elton John easily has thisweek's highest new entry. You Gotta LoveSomeone blasts onto the chart at No. 46. Thesecond release from George Michael's ListenWithout Prejudice Vol. 1, Freedom, is a dis-tant second at No. 63. That is just ahead ofRobert Palmer's You're Amazing at No. 65.Boo who? Betty Boo has this week's hotdance song. Doin' The Do debuts on theDance chart at No. 6. Meanwhile, Boo,Clayton, Muddy, and Spike Wilbury, collec-tively known as Traveling Wilburys, have thisweek's big jump on the Album chart. Volume3 climbs all the way from No. 80 to No. 17.Van Morrison's Enlightenment also has a bigjump this week, up 25 spots to No. 29.Good Timing Don Henley's New YorkMinute enters the chart this week at No. 79. Itis one of several songs that make reference totime in the title. It joins Asia's Days LikeThese, Lisa Stansfield's This Is The RightTime, Gino Vannelli's The Time Of Day,George Michael's Praying For Time, MariahCarey's Love Takes Time, Sheree's ForeverYou, Forever Me, and The VaughanBrothers' Tick Tock. Mae Moore's I'll WatchOver You doesn't count. What's in a name? The act with the shortestname to have hit No. 1 is M. Pop Muzik hitthe top in 1979. It might be a long time beforean artist with a shorter name comes along!

years have been idle," she laughs.Zahalan features the work of a handful

of well-known producers, includingHumberto Gatica, Hank Medress, GeraldO'Brien and David Foster. While the processof waiting for producers to become availablewas often excruciating, Zahalan says it wasalso very rewarding. After waiting tenmonths to work with David Foster, she saysthat recording with him was "the highlight ofmy studio experience. He treated me withtotal respect, brought me in on the wholerecording process." The album also featurescontributions from a number of now -familiarnames. "So many of the players have gainedso much more notoreity since I worked withthem," laughs Zahalan. They includeRichard Marx, whose own album had not yetbeen released when he sang for Zahalan, andthe team which wrote I Can't Forget AboutYou, the album's first single: Alannah Myles,Christopher Ward and David Tyson.

If time has worked in Zahalan's favour,so has her experience. She says her theatrebackground has proved invaluable. "It has alot of influence in terms of stamina. PumpBoys and Dinettes was eight shows a week forten and a half months with no break. It hastaught me a lot in terms of endurance. Itenhances my performance. When you haveany kind of dramatic training you don't justgo out and sing. You perform a song...I thinkit has made me much more expressive." Somuch more expressive that the once -shyZahalan now teaches a vocal performanceclass at her alma mater.

Zahalan says she has grown enormouslyas a performer since her first album. Sherecalls an early criticism of that album, froman American record company executive, whoadmired the material and the singing, butsaid, "'What's missing is attitude.' I didn'thave a clue what he was talking about. Now Ilook back and I think, 'yeah, that's exactlywhat was missing.' And that's what I feel I'vecaptured and grown into, and I'm reallypleased about that."

She says the new album reflects thesechanges and the security she now feels abouther image. "The first album was muchlighter, much softer rock, much more adultcontemporary," she says. "This album hasmore of an edge to it. It still has some ofthose songs which will cross over to the adultcontemporary market, beacuse I like thatkind of music too, and the rock edge showsmy live side. I tried to capture a lot of that onthe record. I can do all the songs live; they fitme perfectly."

The album jacket picturesjacket -clad Zahalan looking remarkably likethe now -famous co-author of her single, butZahalan says she is not worried by potentialcomparisons. "There's certainly room in theCanadian market for another female singer.I'm not challenging Alann-ah's arena, or SassJordan. I'm in betwen them...There will beno comparisons (with Alannah Myles) whenpeople hear or see us. The reason we went forthat in terms of a look is that I have a tenden-cy to look really soft. So if you put a leatherjacket on me at least I look that much harder.

And that's what I would wear. I'm just tryingto be true to what I would pull off."

Zahalan is encouraged by the record'swarm reception by radio programmers, a sur-prising number of whom remember hername, even if they can't pronounce it. She iseager to tour in the new year, but is trying tokeep her excitement about her new project inperspective. "I find it hard to maintain anykind of objectivity about it," she admits."I'm trying to keep an open slate right nowbecause I just don't know what to expect. Icertainly have high hopes, but I just want tosit back and let it happen, and give it room tohappen."
