Weve reached that point in our orbs revolu-tion when the northern hemisphere is closest to

the sunbut summer isnt ofcial until you have

a light, cold one in your hand. Thats right, noth-

ing is more delicious than a frosty one. Heck,

Coors has a whole marketing campaign revolv-

ing around how cold their beer isas if they

have control over the temperature setting in

your fridge. But lets move away from the fridge:

Fill up your cooler and make your way to the

beach, park, ball game, or wherever you want to

drink al fresco and hang out with your buds.

What to put in the cooler should depend on

the Weather Channel. If the forecast predicts a

day thats at least ve degrees hotter than thecomfort level on your home thermostat, then nd

your way to lighter summer brews. Why? First,

no one wants to be slugging down brown ales in

the sun. Second, depending on how frequently

your local store turns over inventory, chances

are the summer beers are fresher than a regular

12-er. And perhaps in response to the com-

plaints of insecure men who consider summer

beers to be girly, brewers have more and more

options that arent overly fruity. Grab one of

It wasnt until 1998 that it became legal to tat-

too in Milwaukee, WI. Growing up, when you saw

someone with a tattoo, you knew there were only

three ways to get it: you were either in jail, in the

military, or you went out of state, says artist Brian

Ewing, who grew up in Wisconsin.Ewing has garnered attention as a well-known

rock poster artist working with musicians like Tom-

ahawk, Morrissey, The Deftones, and Graveyard.

After stints in New York, San Francisco, and Los

Angeles, Ewing moved to Columbus, OH, where

he recently snagged an apprenticeship at High

Street Tattoo. I respect the craft, Ewing says of

the possibility hell transition from rock poster artist

    to tattoo artist.

Ewing describes his Midwest childhood as a

steady diet of skateboarding, punk music, heavy

metal, and comic books. In the early 2000s, Ewing,

a self-professed art school dropout, moved to L.A.

and landed a job at Larry Flynt Publications doingproduction and layout for 1-800 ads in the back of

Hustlermagazine. He would spend lunch hours and

weekends freelancing and creating posters for local

    music venues.

Inuenced by art nouveau, ukiyo-e wood-block

prints, southern Californias car culture, and com-

ics, Ewings work has been exhibited from Italy to

Kansas City. My artwork is pretty dark and a lot

of the stuff I do is self-taught, he says. But for his

tattoo work, he is going the tried-and-true route. I

want to go through a traditional apprenticeship and

learn everything from the sanitation to the workings

    of the machine. Kara Pound

Mr. Sunshne wreaks havoc on tattoos.lucky, there are products specfcaycreated to save your nk.

The beach, camping, cookouts, biking, out-door concertsall summer fun happens in thesun. Though the great outdoors is great for a lot

of reasons, it also exposes you to harmful UV raysthat could damage both your skin and your ink.The sun can fade ink over time, making it some-what lighter and less vibrant, explains Andrew K.Pollack, M.D., director at the Philadelphia Instituteof Dermatology. On top of that, UV rays dull anddiminish certain colors faster than others (red isnotoriously quick to fade).

The best way to protect your artwork is tocover it with clothing or sunscreen, like thetattoo-specic SPF products here. But if one ofyour tattoos is already damaged and you want itgone to make room for a better piece (that youpromise to protect more vigilantly!), take comfort:Laser removal of a faded tattoo is likely to beeasier and less painful than it would be for freshink, says Dr. Pollack. From Lewis and Clark to Kerouac and Kesey to

always been an American way of life. These days,

the best way to venture out yonder is in one of

these headliners of the open road.

jeep actiON camper Thaler Design turns the

off-roader into a small apartment. Their Wrangler

Unlimited is outtted with a spacious convertible

camper featuring all the comforts of home. Inside

since getting dirty on the road is an inevitability,

the sink can even convert into a shower.

futuria SpOrtS + SpaNo name could ever do a

Spa is for those who never want to rough it on the

road again. This space-age oasis is equipped with

a motor sport garage to hold your hot rod and

an on-board generator. The lonely highway wontbe so sullen with the unmatched accommodations

inside the trailer: room for 10 people, a fridge,

microwave, and at screens. And just in case

cabin fever sets in, the Sports + Spa also has a

Sleeping up to ve road-savvy pioneers, the luxury

liner of the highways has everything to offer but a

    teenage

bottlerocketWyoming, the Cowboy State, is known for many things: beautiful country-

side, Dick Cheney, buffalo, Old Faithful, and punk rock (cue sound of a recordscreeching to a halt). Yep, punk rock in Wyoming. Teenage Bottlerocket maysound like they grew up down the street from CBGB, but its Laramie that theycall home. One might think that it would be difcult to start a band without ascene to support it, but this was never a hindrance for TB. Thats the thingabout Wyomingtheres nothing to do, says guitarist Ray Carlisle. So if yougive them something to do, the kids are going to do it.

The bands name is an apt description for their soundenergy-driven pop-punk with a sarcastic sense of humorand it was chosen when the act formedin the early 2000s, just long ago enough for the guys to forget where the namecame from. Our rst guitar player, Zach, said it was the name of his dads rstcar, a 49 Ford, drummer Brandon Carlisle reports. But that Zach guy was sofull of shit. It was probably something he read in one of his hot rod magazines. That guy stole my U.S. Bombs shirt, and Ill never forgive him for that. What-ever the origins, the name has gotten a little awkward to play under as the bandmembers advance in years. My moms friends like to bring up the fact that weare no longer teenagers, Brandon notes.

But that hasnt stopped Teenage Bottlerocket from touring relentlessly andusing a tool to get noticed that many bands abandoned after the Total Request

Live era. Their videos for Skate or Die and Headbanger depict the frenzy andhumor of the band perfectly and are racking up hits on YouTube every day. Yeah, the YouTube thing makes videos more relevant for underground bands. In the 90sit was sort of pointless for a smaller band to make a music video, Brandon says. There was really no chance of anyone seeing it, unless you were set up to be onMTV. But nowadays its as easy to watch an underground band on YouTube as itis the bigger bands. That certainly helps motivate us to shoot our stupid videos.

The ink of the guys in the band also seems to be cohesive with the soundof the group. Guitarist Kody Templeman shows off the light side of the bandwith Trogdor the Burninator inked on his forearm. Brandon has tattoos depict-ing some of the groups musical inuences, including Screeching Weasel andthe Ramones, and the story behind Rays main tattoo would be perfect lyricalfodder for one of TBRs songs: I got this tattoo in Italyits my ex-wifes name. Then I got it x-ed out in Bakerseld, he explains. The most heavily tattooedmember of the group is bassist Miguel Chen, who has a mishmash of seriouspersonal tattoos and a lot of tattoos inuenced by sci- and horror movies, which are common themes in TBR songs (see: Necrocomicon and BloodBath at Burger King). Chen gets a lot of his work done by Jeff Everett at The

Underground in Laramie, proving once again that Wyoming has more than buf-falo, Old Faithful, and Cheney. Charlie Connell

    Jennyyukich-

gardenhireFootball is still months away, right? Wrong. The women of the Legends

Football League (formerly known as the Lingerie Football League) are currentlycareening into each other for our amusement. And the top pick on our fantasy

team is number 15 on the Las Vegas Sin, Jenny Yukich-Gardenhire (a.k.a. Doll-face), who tears up the tur f and has as much ink as her counterparts in the NFL.

Raised in Wichita, KS, Yukich-Gardenhire is a longtime model and athletewho got her start with the LFL in 2009, playing for the Denver Dream. Thisseason marks her second playing for the Sin at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Heres the gist of LFL: Its a seven-on-seven, full-contact football league. The ladies play on a eld thats 30 by 50 yards. There are no eld goals, sothe games a fast-paced, nonstop 40 minutes, with each team going for asmany touchdowns as possible. Oh, and instead of wearing uniforms that padtheir hard bodies, the girls are in lingeriewhich, tantalizing as it is, can leadto busted coverage.

Every once in a while my bra top will get snatched over to the side, butIve never gotten it actually ripped off of me, Yukich-Gardenhire says. I dontremember my bottoms ever getting pulled off, mostly because Im not an offen-sive player, so Im doing the tackling.

You might imagine that a locker room full of girls in lingerie would turn into acatght complete with feather pillows and a Jell-O wrestling ring, but Yukich-Gardenhire says thats not the case: We really dont ght with each other.Sure, when were on the eld, we ght hard and we play hard, but when wereoff the eld, were all pretty good friends.

If youre not already in love with Dollface, you should probably know that herfavorite things to dobesides playing footballare gaming (Halo, specically)and getting tattooed. Shes currently rocking a Day of the Dead tattoo done by

Duncan Macormac at Victory Tattoo, and a voodoo doll, monster cupcake, teddy bear, and innity sign from Tony Arias of Hart & Huntington. Kara Pound

The Legends Football League may not have asmuch ink as the NFL, but this member of theLas Vegas Sin keeps things colorful.

ttention, TV producers: meet Cleo Wat-

tenstrm, a tattoo artist and model from

    Stockholm. Doesnt Stockholm Inkhave

an interesting ring to it? Like reality stars

Kat Von D and Megan Massacre, Cleois a tattoo artist rst and foremost. In

fact, she was reluctant to charm the

camera. When I started modeling I was

a bit torn because I feel that in the tattoo industry,

if you are a professional tattooer, people think that

you shouldnt display yourself in any other light,

she says. I was a bit worried about what people

would think about me, with the publicity and nudity

and so on. Then I just made peace with the fact that

I cant go on worrying about others so I might as

well go ahead and do whatever the hell I feel like.

Cleo uses modeling as a means to do what

she loves. I prioritize my tattooing, she says. A

modeling job has to give me either the oppor-tunity to travel or money for it to be worthwhile.

I have enough pictures of myselfI dont see

why I would need more of them.

In 2009, after learning her craft for a few

years at a small shop, she got a station at Life-

style Tattoo. Her work, which she often free-

hands, uses color in interesting ways and mixes

new school and traditional. Though she hasnt

been tattooing long, shes always been drawn

to the art form. As a kid I was really intrigued

by bands that had a punk look, often with pierc-

ings and tattoos, she says. When I was 13 I

found a dodgy tattoo parlor where they did a

little text on my hip that reads Babylon GoingDown. I had dreadlocks down to my butt at the

time and was going through some rasta-punk

phase. She pauses and blushes. Its embar-

rassing to talk about, but I will never consider

covering it up. That is tattooings whole charm

for me: collecting little pieces of your life as you

go. Currently her favorite piece is a neck tat-

too of a street lamp with wings, but that could

change as her collection grows. Anja Cadlek

INKED: The Lnahik lie hw were epi. Did pt a lt

thght int the ial apet them?

The Kgan: I was actually an art student at [theSchool of Visual Arts] for a couple of years. Iwas really obsessed with horror makeup. I lovehorror movies, and there was a workshop with[special effects makeup artist] Tom Savini, so Isigned up for that. I was stoked that we weregoing to make heads and blow them up. Butthen he got booked on a movie and had to can-cel the workshop, and I was literally crying into

my pillow. It has been so long and Im still sosad. In our very rst Lunachicks album I made abig bloody gash on my arm in one of the photos. At a CBGB show I made this big wound and Iwas so proud of it.

Wa it dd t that peple thght r Lnahik lk

wa ex? It was awesome. It was attering. Thereare lots of younger girls who will write to me onvarious social media and be like, I cant believeI missed seeing you guys. And they look like

they could be in the band now. I love it; I thinkits adorable.

What d think abt the wa miian lk thee da?

Once MTV came around I think things becamemore visual and looks became much moreimportant. Look at Janis Joplinshe was not apretty woman. There are some ugly fuckers inrock bands from the 70s. KISS are not attractivepeople, so they wear makeup to make it so theylook like rock gods. I think looks are much moreimportant now than they were, but if the talentand showmanship are there you can make it.

D think anne i arring the Lnahik fag tda? There has been a resurgence in glam rock, butI havent seen any new bands in quite a whilebecause I dont really go to shows anymore. Theday that I found out I was pregnant was the lastnight of my regular party. It was New Years Eve atDon Hills. But now I have kind of matured.

And nw Dn Hill int een arnd. Yes, and CBGB isgone. I dont want to be one of those people whosays, Eh, everything sucks now. Everything is

just different; its probably awesome for the kidswho are in the scene.

D mi the ene and perrming? Wld eer d it

again? I certainly never say never. Im sure that I amgoing to want to get up on the stage again. Thelast time I was onstage was about a year ago. It

was at MoMA PS1, an amazing performance at amuseum. I had a great time, but I didnt feel like Istill want to do it all the time. When I am onstagethe artistic energy is owing through me, and nowthat channel is visual again. I have so much creativ-ity going on visually, which is where I started as anart student. When you are doing makeup you arebasically painting. With Armour Beauty, I am com-ing up with new colors and artistic vision.

Where did the name Armr Beat me rm? Beautygives you armor; makeup gives you armor fromsociety. Also, our line is plant-based, with natu-ral oils and butters that shield your lips and skinfrom the elements.

What prmpted t reate the line? I was doing abunch of performing at the time and I was at apoint where I wanted to do something different.Makeup has been a passion since I can remem-ber. As a child I could remember going into thehair salon with my grandmother and loving thesmell of the nail polish, chemicals, and hair dyes.

Lip gloss just seemed like the obvious choice forme because there are many out there but nonethat I think are as good as Armour Beauty. Of thelip glosses I was using, Id get a great color but itwould dry out my lips or would only stay on for veminutes. I wanted to make the best-looking long-wearing, chic, beautiful, colored lip gloss line. Allmy girlfriends who wear next to no makeup stillput on lip gloss every day. Its the one beauty itemthat most women are going to use.

Wa the tranitin rm rker t binepern natral?I didnt think about that until recently. Being in a

I you ask around the INKED ofces, a handul o the women on our sta will tell you the reason that they frst got

Kogan, the lead singer, had more ink than almost any other musicianguy or gal.

The tattooed It girl is more than a singer, though. Shes modeled or Calvin Klein, Burberry, and Kenneth Cole, and

appeared inZoolander, Rock Star, and Martin Scorseses Bringing Out the Dead. She also ronted an electro band, Theo

Now the mom o a young daughter, Kogan has moved on rom the reckless lie o punk music and ocused her

creativity on a rock n roll line o makeup inspired by everything rom Heart to Led Zeppelinand the riot grrrls in

S.T. Tattoo Studio in west LosAngeles was ounded in order tocelebrate the usion o punk rock andtattoos, two things that go togetherlike coee and cigarettes. Jason

Brown (ormer singer o Evol) andMike Muir (the singer rom SuicidalTendencies, which released their lat-est album, 13, in March) wanted tofnd a business that combined theirtwo great loves; thus S.T. Tattoo wasborn. Id known Mike since the 80swhen we would go on tour and dotattoos on the road, Brown recalls.Basically when we got back romthe road we decided we wanted toopen up a tattoo studio that includedpunk rock music, art, and a little his-

tory on the band. Ater a ew yearsBrown bought out Muir, but the shopis still very much connected to themovement and the band.

S.T. Tattoo is located about a mile

away rom Venice Beach, wheretheres no shortage o tattoo shops. Were on the borderline o LosAngeles and Venice, but not on thebeach. We dont want to be associ-ated with the shops down there,Brown says. Its just a bunch oscratchers down there; its more o anovelty tourist spot.

Instead o being just another stu-dio down by the beach, S.T. Tattoo isa celebration o all o Browns loves. The culture o the shop is deeply

rooted in punk music, skateboard-ing, lowrider cars, and southernCaliornia black-and-gray tattoos.Brown estimates that roughly 80percent o the work done in the

shop is black-and-gray, but says theartists at the studio are more thancapable o tattooing in other styles, such as traditional and Japanese. We like to think o our shop as aliestyle shoppeople who are intoblack-and-gray, punk rock, and thatwhole liestyle, Brown says. My frststyle was black-and-gray, but I alsodo whatever comes my way. We doeverything.

When the shop frst opened, mosto the business came in thanks to the

Clockwise from far left: tattoo byDonovan Faulkner; tattoo by JasonBrown; tattoo by Wayne Bernard; tattooby Faulkner; tattoo by Faulkner.

    connection with Suicidal Tendencies,

but over the years the studio has built

up a reputation or itsel. Brown takes

an awul lot o pride in the act that

S.T. Tattoo is a custom shop; there

is no ash on the wall, only the worko the artists in the studio. We dont

let anybody walk out o here without

getting a custom piece, Brown says.

He handles much o the black-and-

gray work, but is comortable doing

other styles. Artist Wayne Bernard is

a local Venice boy who spent some

time tattooing in Miami and returned

to S.T., where he does traditional

work. Donovan Faulkner is a jack-o-

all-trades like Brown, and is known

or rocking out sick Japanese tattoos.

    Another aspect that makes the

vibe at S.T. Tattoo special is its size.

Originally it was in a larger location

that also included an art studio and

a skate shop, but that just didnt

ft the intimate vibe that Brownwanted, so he made the decision

to move to a smaller location. In

doing so he has created the perect

environment or the S.T. Tattoo Stu-

dio. Were a small crew, he says.

Were a tight-knit amily and we

try to give everybody a nice experi-

encethey get a custom piece that

nobody else has. What makes us

    dierent than all the competitors

around us is the act that we can

be one-on-one with the clients and

    make them eel comortable.

A lot o shop owners might eel

as i they had taken a step down

by removing some o the rills and

setting up in a smaller space, but

Brown believes that paring the shopdown to the basics allows him to

spend less time dealing with hassles

and bullshit and more time ocusing

on what is most importantthe tat-

too art. I think that, over the years,

as tattooing has grown into ashion,

there isnt a lot o true art out there

anymore. Thats why we decided to

take it down a spot and just do our

    own thing. Everybody is connected

to their clients here, Brown explains.

It may be intimate, but S.T. Tat-

too is always bustling, according to

    Brown. Theres always something

happening every day, whether it is

    Robert Downey Jr. getting tattooed

or Danny Trejo stopping by to say

hi. Its that whole vibe o skating, surfng, and music. I getting inked

up next to Iron Man or Machete isnt

enough to make you want to pop

into the place, the high quality o its

    custom work should persuade you.

No matter how crazy a customers

idea might be, the artists at S.T.

Tattoo will do everything they can to

make sure the client leaves with a

custom piece they can be proud o.

We try and make every tattoo like it

was our last tattoo, Brown vows.
