We are so excited about 2016! The Tourism Council of Bullock County’s goal has

always been to offer quality, top-rate theatre in the warm, charming setting of

a lovely, small Southern town. We want our guests to experience professional

productions while relaxing in an atmosphere of days gone by. As we continue in

the second decade of the RED DOOR THEATRE, we are proud to announce our

twelfth year of outstanding productions and offer you a glimpse of SOUTHERN

STARS!

Union Springs is conveniently located between Montgomery, Auburn, Columbus

(GA), Eufaula, and Troy. We are only 2 hours from Atlanta and Birmingham. Our

theatre events are wonderful outings for groups and individuals alike. Many

tour groups, church senior adult ministries and Sunday school classes, and Red

Hat Ladies visit with us each year. Packages that include overnight

accommodations are also available.

The Red Door Theatre’s 2016 season, SOUTHERN STARS, is a celebration of our

heritage, culture, and future. Each of the four plays being produced has

Southern connections and Southern roots. You are invited to come and

experience the SOUTHERN STARS productions that we are offering in 2016:

♦ February 18-20, 27 & 28 Wedding Belles

♦ April 28-30 & May 1, 6 & 7 Doublewide, Texas

♦ July 28-30, & August 6 & 7 Last Train to Nibroc ♦ December 1-3, 10, & 11 In-Laws, Outlaws & Other People (That Should Be Shot)

In 2015, we expanded to two weekends, which gave us the opportunity to add

another performance to each production and to allow the actors to savor the

rewards of their hard work and rehearsals by experiencing a two-weekend run.

We also created a beautiful new lobby that enhanced the intimacy of the

theatre and gave an area for guests to gather in inclement weather.

Seated dinners are served in conjunction with each production’s first weekend

of performances. In 2016, the second weekend has been changed to offer

matinees on both Saturday and Sunday (Dinners are NOT available prior to

these performances.) We have bed and breakfast accommodations in local

hunting lodges, and larger cities with hotels are only 35 minutes away. Riding

tours to see the town’s beautiful old homes and other historic sites are

available. PLEASE NOTE: The schedule for Doublewide, Texas is different due

to Mother’s Day weekend, so be sure to check dates/times carefully.

Let us assist you in making your journey to Union Springs a memorable

experience--please contact us at (334) 738-8687 or email

[email protected] for information and reservations. You may visit our

websites at www.unionspringsalabama.com to discover our city’s many

opportunities and www.reddoortheatre.org to learn more about the Red Door.

We look forward to welcoming you to Union Springs and the Red Door Theatre.

The Red Door TheatreThe Red Door TheatreThe Red Door TheatreThe Red Door Theatre

Trinity Episcopal Church (c. 1909) was designed by architect Richard Kennon Perry when he

was a high school senior in Union Springs. This small brick church featured Gothic arches, dual front entrances, and German art stained glass appropriate for the interior plans popular in Southern churches built between 1880 and 1920.

In 2001 the Tourism Council of Bullock County decided that a theatrical production of an original drama indigenous to the community could be the catalyst to attract tourists to Union Springs. Efforts of this group led to the identification of Conecuh People, a collection of monologues compiled by Bullock County native son, Wade Hall, as the vehicle by which to accomplish this goal. Playwright Ty Adams, a native of nearby Clayton who was living in New York, was commissioned to adapt the book for stage, and it was initially presented at Troy University in February 2002. The Tourism Council knew that a home for Conecuh People was needed. In 2002, the City of Union Springs acquired Trinity Church from the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. The City swapped some vacant land generously donated by three local businessmen for the unused church. The Service of Desanctification of a Consecrated Building was performed on August 28, 2002, when the Diocese removed the lectern and bishop’s chair and placed them in other churches. The Tourism Council envisioned locating a theatre in this beautiful, old vacant structure. The City agreed to lease the building to the Tourism Council, and plans were made to produce Conecuh People in the sanctuary of the old church, newly named by the Tourism Council as the Red Door Theatre in honor of the red doors that traditionally signified “sanctuary” in many churches including the former Trinity Episcopal Church. The TCBC had retained the rights to Conecuh People, and a reading of it was presented at the Red Door Theatre in July 2003. By December, the Drama Project Group had been formed from members of the Tourism Council and others in the community. No one in the group had any previous experience in theatre, marketing, publicity, or any other areas associated with the production of a play, but they all had a passion for the community and the arts. A grant was received from the Alabama State Council on the Arts to help produce the play. A director was selected, tasks assigned, and work began. Originally planned only as a play, Conecuh People evolved into Conecuh People…the Experience which included a quilt exhibit in the town’s original Carnegie Library, an exhibit of local artists’ works presented at City Hall, an old-fashioned, seated dinner at the First Baptist Church, tours of a historic log cabin (c.1850) and Civil War cemetery, and overnight accommodations at a nearby hunting lodge. Townspeople and businesses were becoming involved! The results were unbelievable—the play was sold out, and it was an overwhelming success. The next spring the production was expanded to two weekends with more collateral events, and, much to the delight of audiences, air conditioning was installed in the Red Door Theatre! In 2007, it was designated by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel as one of the state’s “50 Must See Cultural Art Events.” In 2008, the Tourism Council announced plans for the Red Door Theatre’s first theatrical season, presenting four plays that were Southern in nature and setting. After a very successful inaugural year well-supported by its patrons, the RDT continued to present four Southern plays annually, and in 2016, will present its ninth theatrical season.
