Canon Brian Dawson writes What a Surprise! Nov. 2019

Blessing of Dogs Service. If you had been in St James Church Huon in-the-Forest on Sunday 6th October at 3.30pm, you would have had quite  a surprise! dogs of many

different breeds on leads were with their proud owners in the pews. They had all

been walking round the Show field & then came into Church with wet feet for a

Service of Blessing. To be fair, the humans removed their wellingtons or boots. The

theme of the short Service was Thanksgiving for Dogs as faithful Companions to us,

one of the many blessings of God’s Creaon. We sang All things bright & beauful & All creatures of our God & King, the hymn of St Francis. There was no sermon as the dogs had been paent enough, but to end  the Blessing of Dogs was said, May you & they enjoy life together, & find joy with the God who created you. Amen. Donaons were for charies in Nepal, Community Acon, Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre

& the Katmandu Contemporary Arts Centre. The congregaon were very appreciave

& had a group photograph to mark the occasion.

Thank-you. The Benefice 60th Anniversary Service of Priesthood at Christchurch, Ivegill

on 29th September was a wonderful & inspiring occasion. The Church was full &

magnificent Lunch followed in the Village Hall. Brian and Mary want to thank the

Ivegill Team & all from our Churches who contributed to the splendid occasion. The

Dawsons received some lovely cards & wish to thank people for them. The illusive

document of Priests Orders which Brian could not find during the sermon, was

discovered in the Village Hall, and, as a surprise, displayed during the reply to John

Sheffield’s kind remarks. So he really is a priest, & has been these last 60 years!!

Church Unity. Recently we stayed for a few days in Kelso in the Scosh Borders. Its an

interesng town with a large central square & the ruins of a fine medieval Abbey. We

enjoyed our visit but had a surprise! The long Street on which our Guest House was

situated had many Churches one aer the other; a Church of Scotland, a Bapst

Church, two Evangelical Churches, a Catholic Church, & even a large Church building

with a fine spire which was for sale. The Scosh  Episcopal Church of St Andrew was

not far away in the town opposite the Abbey ruins. We are used to just one Church

building in most of our villages, so it was a surprise. I wrote in last month’s magazine

of the need for Chrisan Unity if the Chrisan Church is going to survive & thrive in

this country, & in the West generally in the years ahead. This will mean taking a step

much further than just politely working together. Bishop James & the  leaders of the

Methodist Church, United Reform Church & the Salvaon Army, hope that we will

follow their lead in working together in a United Way.

Remembrance Sunday at our In -the -Forest Churches.

The Annual Service of Remembrancewill be held in two of our Churches on Sunday

10th November at 10.30am in St Mary’s Hesket-in-the-Forest, and in St. James, Huon-in-the Forest. We hope they will be well supported, as we remember with Thankfulness the many who died for their country whose memory we treasure.

God Bless you all,  Brian.

Brian Dawson’s Thanksgiving Service for 60 years as a PriestA full Christ Church shared the thanksgiving service led by Rev’d Canon Beth Smith, for Rev’d Canon Brian Dawson’s 60 years as a Priest. We can but admire the dedication he and Mary have given to our benefice and continue to give. Thank you to Brian and Mary for in-viting us all to share the special occasion. There is nothing as joyous as a full church in full voice, except perhaps the enjoyable lunch which followed. Thank you everyone who contributed to the day in any way.

Hello I have decided to update residents of Hesket Parish as to what members of the Parish Council have been doing recently; I want to encourage you to get in touch if you have any issues big or small.

This month I have been contacted by a resident at Crooks Bridge having issues with HGVs travelling down an unsuitable road. As a Parish Council we contacted Cumbria Highways and asked them out to take a look, I have since received an email from Cumbria Highways with suggestions at how they will take this forward.

My Self and David Scurrah , a member of the Parish Council, met with two residents from High Hesket this week near the primary school. We were looking at the parking outside of school, Cumbria Highways were also there as was the Head Teacher. New signage has been suggested and monitoring the speed of traffic through the village. We will continue to take an interest for the residents of High Hesket.

We are working on a new play area in Armathwaite. The Parish Council own this play area, we are at the design stage and we have had an open morning in the village and invited residents , parents and children to give their feedback before we start applying for grants .

We can be contacted about planning applications, bins not being emptied, footway lights not working. We hold our meetings on Tuesdays at 7.30pm bi-monthly in Low Hesket Village Hall, the next meeting is Tuesday 12th November.

Regards Elaine Martin, Chair, Hesket Parish Council

St Michael's Churchyard and the Grass.

With Autumn here and the growing season over for the year, it is important that

we, as a village community group, should thank our small army of grass cuers and

Harvest Fesval at Skelton – October 2019

The Rev Allison Fenton took the special Harvest Service of Holy Communion at the

beginning of October in St Michael's Church, Skelton. It was special service because

the Brownies were there with their colours and Allison had arranged for the girls to

help with the service: they read the lessons and prayers. The church looked fesve

with huge bouquets of flowers, baskets of fruit/veg and even a bird nesng box.

In the Hall the following evening, the marvelous array of flowers, fruit and vegetables,

jams and chutneys, were laid out both on trestle tables across the front of the stage

and on the stage itself, as a supper of pie and peas was served. Every table was taken

and we had a lovely evening thanks to good food and an excellent auconeer.

Stephen Wilkinson's repartee, good humour and the way he sped through all the

items to be sold was impressive. His audience was aenve and ready to buy. Takings

were over £800.

At the end, Jim Mills thanked everyone for coming, all those who had given gis, and

those both inside and outside the kitchen preparing and serving the supper. (The vari

ety of delicious homemade sweets was tremendous)

The winners of the raffle were: Anne Armstrong, Alex Brune, Stef Fiddler, Caroline

Goldsbrough, Jenny Grierson, Felicity Kerr, Ann Lile, Odelle Miller, Chrisne Morley.

What to do in the Garden in November

This Month’s Timely ps What to do and what to sow

Things are slowing down in the garden  come November but there are sll plenty that

needs  growing in me for spring  In the greenhouse/indoors sweet peas, foxgloves,

lupin cyclamen, delphinium. Bulb planters tulip bulb, hyacinth bulb, Christmas rose

Vegetables herbs to sow and grow Basil,Dill,Chives, Parsley

Plant outside Raspberries,Gooseberries,and,Currants. Canes. In the Pong shed clean

and disinfect all tools, windows etc

Pondering from the arm chair   Once upon a me a flock of geese gathered in the

corner of a barn yard every Sunday. Their most eloquent orator got up on the fence

and spoke about the wonders of goose Dom. He recounted the exploits of their

forefathers who dared to mount upon on wings and fly. He spoke of the mercy of the

Creator who had given geese wings and the ability to soar through the sky. All the

geese were deeply impressed and nodded their heads in solemn agreement. They

returned week aer week to hear further lectures on the history of flying and to sing

(squawk is a beer word) about the glories of the sky. All this they did. But one thing

they did not do. They didn't fly. Instead they waddled off to the comfort and security

of the barnyard.  Just as some geese have lost interest in flying, so some Chrisans

have become domescated. To them Paul speaks this challenging word: "Therefore,

my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of

the Lord,  forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord"

(1 Corinthians 15:58).

What flying is to a goose, the "work of the Lord" is to a Chrisan. It is anything anyone

does anywhere and anyme that fulfils God's purposes.

Too many have made the mistake of dividing work into categories of sacred and

secular. They turn the church into an instuon staffed by paid professionals and

funded by laity in secular jobs. They suppose that the work of God goes forth only on

weekends when members of a great army of preachers and missionaries move out to

"do their thing." But in truth the work of God goes forth when members of a vast ar

my of working men and women strategically infiltrate all society by virtue of their jobs

and become God's partners in bringing life abundant to a dying world.

Noce that Paul doesn't address his remarks to the apostles and prophets, but to the

"beloved brethren." That's you!

Our churches are full of willing workers. Some are willing to work and the rest are

willing to let them. What we need are more standbys and fewer bystanders.

Is your work for the Lord steadfast, unmovable, and always abounding? God wants

you to soar like an eagle, not scratch like a sparrow.

We  have  just  completed  our  Annual  Solemn  Exposion  of  the  Blessed  Sacra

ment. During the 21 hours over Friday, Saturday and Sunday while the Blessed

Sacrament was exposed, parishioners through a watching rota ensured the Par

ish was always  represented. Many  called  in  for  a  short  visit,  others dedicated

more me. The opening service was a Mass aended by all the school children

and many parishioners and it concluded with Benedicon on Sunday aernoon.

The altar and the church were especially decorated with candles and flowers.

Although this is an annual event  it always helps to unite the Parish as we pray

for concerns locally, naonally and internaonally.  A sad sign of the mes is the

Bishop’s decision that the 7 churches in the Carlisle area will now be served by 3

priests only. There will be a Sunday Mass in each church. A leaflet provides the

revised mes. We pray for more vocaons to the priesthood.

Our  Parish  School  celebrated  a  Harvest Mass.  The  new  starters  in  Recepon

brought  up  the  offertory  Harvest  goods  including  some  fruit  and  vegetables

from our amazing school allotment. We appreciate all the work and help provid

ed by our allotment mentors, who help to  inspire the children as well as edu

cang them. We connue our collecon to support the Food Bank remembering

we need to support and sustain our community. KS1 children enjoyed their first

school disco with no doubt many more to come on their school journey. Thank

you to school staff and others, who made it possible.

Cardinal John Henry Newman has been canonised as a Saint by Pope Francis. He

is the first Englishman born since the 17thcentury to be canonised. Recognised

as an esteemed theologian and a brilliant thinker, he was always recognised as

having the ability  to be at ease with anyone. While based  in Oxford he recog

nised the needs of the poor and the ordinary man and gave them his aenon,

whilst also serving the learned community of that University City.

The  latest  fundraising  venture  to  raise  money  for  the  Holy  Spirit  Sisters  of
