todas as palavras escritas.
2.1- Previewing:
6
“A picture that has or appears to have height, width and depth is three-dimensional (or
3-D). A picture that has height and width but no depth is two-dimensional (or 2-D). Some
pictures are 2-D on purpose. Think about the international symbols that indicate which door leads
to a restroom, for example. Symbols are designed for being recognized at a glance. That is why
only the most basic shapes are used. Additional information on symbols might reveal what sort of
clothes a man or a woman is wearing, their hair color, whether they get to the gym on a regular
basis, and so on, but all of that extra information would tend to take one longer time in getting a
symbol´s basic information: which restroom is which. That is one of the basic differences
between how 2-D and 3-D graphics are used: 2-D graphics are good at communicating
something simple, very quickly. 3-D graphics tel l a more complicated story, but have to
carry much more information to do it.
figura 1
Take a look at the triangles above. Each of the triangles on the left has three lines and
three angles -- all that is needed to tell the story of a triangle. We see the image on the right as
a pyramid -- a 3-D structure with four triangular sides. Note that it takes five lines and six angles
to tell the story of a pyramid -- nearly twice the information required to tell the story of a
triangle.” (howstuffworks.com).
2.2- Context (contexto)
“The concept of sending electronic text messages between parties in a way analogous to
mailing letters or memos predates the creation of the Internet. Even today it can be important to
distinguish between Internet and internal e-mail systems. Internet e-mail may travel and be stored
unencrypted on many other networks and machines out of both the sender's and the recipient's
control. During this time it is quite possible for the content to be read by third parties, if anyone
considers it important enough. Purely internal or intranet mail systems, where the information
never leaves the corporate or organization's network, are much more secure”.
No contexto acima, a tradução mais adequada seria:
- between parties: entre partes;
- analogous: similar, análogo;
- predates: antecede;
- recipient’s control: controle do recebedor;
- third parties: terceiros (outros).
2.3- Skimming
A seguir, tente responder as questões propostas.
8
“Mobile phone maker Nokia has launched a music and games download service, challenging both rival handset makers and mobile phone network providers.
The Nokia Music Store should make it easier for customers to use Nokia handsets as music players, making them stronger rivals to Apple's iPhone.
It will also make Nokia a rival to the sellers of its phones, the network providers, which also offer downloads. Nokia has also unveiled handsets better suited as multimedia players.
Nokia predicts that the market for such phones, which can be used to surf the web, play music and games, and even make calls, is set to grow by 50% to 120 million units this year.
“Looking into the future, we will deliver great devices, combined with compelling experiences and services, to make it easy for people to unlock the potential of the Internet", said Nokia's chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo.”
a) Qual é o assunto principal do texto?
b) Qual seria um bom título?
c) Quem é Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo?
2.4- Scanning
Leia as perguntas e tente localizar as respostas no texto abaixo, utilizando a técnica de
scanning.
“Motorola, the American electronics manufacturer, is to cut an extra 4,000 jobs in a move to trim costs. It's been losing ground to arch-rival Nokia in the intensely competitive global market for mobile phones. This report is from Mark Gregory:
If mobile phones were shared out equally, nearly half the world's population would have one. The number of handsets is now close to three billion. But a big market doesn't necessarily mean a profitable one.
9
Competition between rival manufacturers is cut throat in the extreme. There are four big mobile phone makers: Nokia, the market leader, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Motorola. Currently Motorola is seen as the weakest with relatively high costs and few snazzy new models. The company had already announced 3,500 job cuts. Now it's slashing another 4,000 posts. It's part of a restructuring programme intended to trim operating costs by a billion dollars. The company says its number one priority is restoring profits, not gaining market share at any price.
Analysts say Motorola's main problem is Nokia. Nokia ruled the mobile phone roost for many years, then went into something of a decline, but in the last year or two it's come back with a vengeance. Motorola so far at least has been seen as the main victim of Nokia's recent revival”.
(Mark Gregory, BBC)
Vocabulário de apoio:
- shared out equally: when everyone gets the same number/amount. - handsets: a handset is a telephone mouthpiece and earpiece forming one unit. - profitable: bringing money (from a business). - cut throat in the extreme: here, very high, very severe. - snazzy: stylish and attractive, usually in a showy way. - slashing: cutting, getting rid of. - to trim operating costs: to reduce the amount of money needed for the company to exist and work. - number one priority: the most important issue. - ruled the mobile phone roost: the most important of all mobile phone manufacturers - with a vengeance: in a higher degree than what was expected.
2.5- Making Inferences
Eastman Kodak, the world’s largest maker of camera film, has reported a loss of $1.03 billion. This is mainly because of restructuring efforts and a large fall in film sales. News of the loss led to a 5.3 percent fall in the company’s shares. Investors were unsure if the company would become a major player in the digital market. Kodak is still struggling to adapt to changes in technology from film to digital. It has invested heavily in digital and will take time before healthy profits return. In the same quarter last year it netted $458 million in profits.
10

4-VERB IDENTIFICATION
4.1 The Simple Tenses
negativas do not (don’t) e does not (doesn’t).
Exemplos:
• I play tennis.
• She does not play tennis.
• Does he play tennis?
• The train leaves every day at 7 AM.
• The train does not leave at 9 AM.
• She always forgets her purse.
• He never forgets his books.
específico no passado.
Para pergunta,s usa-se o auxiliar Did e nas negativas did not ( didn’t).
Exemplos:
• I saw a movie yesterday.
• I didn't see a play yesterday.
• Last year, I traveled to Japan.
• Last year, I didn't travel to Korea.
• Did you have dinner last night?
• She washed her car.
• He didn't wash his car.
14
O futuro simples é formado pelo auxiliar “Will” (na negativa will not = won’t). Pode-se
também usar a forma “be going to”.
Exemplos:
• I will work tomorrow.
• Will you help me?
• She won’t invite them to the party.
• I’m going to travel next Saturday.

Exercício de apoio:
Leia o texto abaixo e circule todas as ocorrências do verbo to be; retire do texto dois verbos no
passado simples.
“Downloading movies and video became a little easier this week. An Internet company has started a new service that allows people to access movies and burn them onto a DVD. The company, CinemaNow.com, announced in a press release that its customers can “legally download…movies…and burn them to DVD for playback in a standard DVD player”. CEO Curt Marvis said: “Today, our customers will experience a true innovation in home entertainment: the ability to obtain a DVD in the comfort of their living room.” Mr. Marvis added that when he began in 1999, his aim was to be number one. He proudly stated: “This is a historic day for CinemaNow as we are at the forefront of digital video distribution.” CinemaNow’s new technology is still being tested. The software prevents a burned DVD from being re-burned and copied onto another disc. This means it is almost impossible to make hundreds of copies and so helps stop video piracy. CinemaNow already distributes video from ABC News, Disney, Sony and Warner Bros. Mr. Marvis is now looking for other partners to increase his share in the industry. Newspapers report the company may soon link up with Apple Computer and use the popular iTunes store to sell movies. Apple would benefit as it could tighten its hold on the digital entertainment market. The service is only available in the USA but may go global next year”. (www.breakingnewsenglish.com)
4.3- Continuous Tenses
momento. Por exemplo, você está usando essa apostila. Você está estudando a língua inglesa
agora (You are studying English now).
are going to travel tomorrow). Esse tempo verbal é formado pelo verbo to be + um verbo no
gerúndio:
16
I am speaking to you.
You are reading this.
She is staying in London.
We are playing football.
Is he watching TV?
Are they waiting for John?
I was speaking to you yesterday
You were reading this an hour ago.
She was staying in London Last week.
We were playing football In the morning.
Was he watching TV? Tabela 5 Quanto do Future Continuous, que é formado por will be + um verbo no gerúndio:
“She will be sleeping when we arrive there.” (Ela estará dormindo quando chegarmos lá).
4.4 Perfect Tenses
17
presente. A estrutura segue o modelo: pessoa + verbo auxiliar have/has + verbo principal no
Past Participle.
Exemplos: • They have just left home. • Have you ever been to New York/ • Have you found a job yet? • It has rained for two weeks.
ação no passado:
I went home. (ação no passado)
When I arrived at home, Paul had already arrived.
Compare agora o passado perfeito (I had done) e o passado simples (I did):
“Was she hungry when you arrived?” “No, she had already eaten a fruit.”
Prática:
Sublinhe no texto abaixo as ocorrências de Presente Perfeito:
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has produced a laptop computer that will
sell for $100. The machines will revolutionize learning for children in developing countries.
Nicholas Negroponte, head of MIT’s Media Lab, has started a non-profit organization called One
Laptop Per Child. His aim is to distribute millions of the new laptops to the world’s poor
children. He wants to make sure they don't end up on the wrong side of a digital divide. Mr.
Negroponte thought of the idea after seeing how children in a Cambodian village learned from a
laptop.
4.5 Imperative
18
Let’s). O imperativo negativo é formado acrescentando-se o auxiliar do not = don’t ou let us not
=let’s not:
Go home! (Vá pra casa!)
Come here please! (venha aqui por favor!)
Please don’t go! (por favor não vá!)
Don’t do that! (não faça isso!)
Let’s go home! (vamos pra casa.)
Don’t smoke in this área. (não fume nessa área)
Open the window. (abra a janela)
4.6 There To Be (Verbo Haver)
O verbo “Haver”, com sentido de existir, é formado pelo there + be conjugado no tempo
adequado:
There be: Haver (infinitivo)
There is/are: Há
There was/were: Havia
There will be: Haverá
There has (have) been: Tem havido
Veja os exemplos:
There is a car in front of the bank. (Há um carro em frente ao banco).
There was a car in front of the bank. (Havia um carro em frente ao banco).
Are there good restaurants in this town? (Há bons restaurantes nessa cidade?)
Will there be peace in the future? (Haverá paz no futuro?).
4.7- Phrasal Verbs (Verbos preposicionados)
Muitas vezes é possível a
interpretação do sentido com base em experiência no idioma, por exemplo: come = vir; come in =
entrar; a preposição in (dentro) traz essa idéia de “vir para dentro”, ou seja, entrar; assim, come
out recebe a tradução de sair.. A lista
Ask for: pedir.
Bring about: causar.
Call back: retornar a ligação telefônica.
Call in: convidar.
Call off: cancelar.
Call on: 1) visitar 2) perguntar uma questão a um aluno.

5 MODAL VERBS
Ex.: May I go to the bathroom?
You might not like this play.
21
"May", "might" e "must" serão seguidos pelo verbo em sua forma natural sem o “to”.
Ex.: You must water these plants everyday.
Uso:
Ex.: I may go to the beach this weekend (good possibility), and Meg might come with me.
Ex.: If you want to be rich, you must work hard, or win the lottery.
You must not smoke in a gas station.
"Must" também é usado para indicar uma possibilidade concreta baseada em dedução.
Ex.: He is a very handsome man. He must have a girlfriend.
No passado
usa-se could (também para uso mais formal).
Can you do me a favor? (informal).
Could you do me a favor? (mais respeitoso).

Traduza as frases sublinhadas no texto abaixo:
A Japanese company started selling a futuristic home robot on September 16th. The meter-high humanoid may make housework a thing of the past – for the rich. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries put its internet-linked Wakamaru robot on sale at a price of $150,000. Just 100 of these home helps will initially be available. The robot is the idea of Japanese designer Toshiyuki Kita. He said his creation was “designed in the shape of a human being so that it is not considered simply a machine” and that it has an “independent personality”.
The robot has an impressive number of features. It is capable of recognizing up to ten individuals by name and has a vocabulary of 10,000 words. It can also navigate its way around the house. The Wakamaru website explains three major functions that will help the lives of the robot’s users: It can live with the family and provide daily schedules; it can speak with the family and be a friend; and it has its own role of looking after the house when no one is home. However, the price needs to come down to make it affordable by all.
Vocabulário de apoio:
- On sale: a venda.
- Shape: forma.
- Available: disponível.
- Features: características.
- However: contudo.
- Schedules: agendas.

Observe:
Information storage and retrieval is the systematic process of collecting and cataloging data so that they can be located and displayed on request. Computers and data processing techniques have made possible the high-speed, selective retrieval of large amounts of information for government, commercial, and academic purposes. Basically, there are several types of information-storage-and-retrieval systems. Document-retrieval systems store entire documents, which are usually retrieved by title or by key words associated with the document. In some systems, the text of documents is stored as data. This permits full text searching, enabling retrieval on the basis of any words in the document. In others, a digitized image of the document is stored, usually on a write-once optical disc. Database systems store the information as a series of discrete records that are, in turn, divided into discrete fields (e.g., name, address, and phone number); records can be searched and retrieved on the basis of the content of the fields (e.g., all people who have a particular telephone area code). The data are stored within the computer, either in main storage or auxiliary storage, for ready access. Reference-retrieval systems store references to documents rather than the documents themselves. Such systems, in response to a search request, provide the titles of relevant documents and frequently their physical locations. Such systems are efficient when large amounts of different types of printed data must be stored. They have proven extremely effective in libraries, where material is constantly changing. 7- COMPARATIVOS E SUPERLATIVOS
26
Exemplos;
I am as tall as my father. = Sou tão alto quanto meu pai.
She doesn't spend so much money on clothes as her sister. = Ela não gasta tanto dinheiro em
roupas quanto a sua irmã.
A formação do grau comparativo de superioridade é a seguinte:
- Para adjetivos curtos (monossílabos) – Adjetivo + er than ...
Exemplos:
I am taller than my father.= Sou mais alto que meu pai.
A motorcycle is faster than a car in urban areas = Uma motocicleta é mais rápida que um carro
em áreas urbanas.
- Para adjetivos longos (polissílabos) - more adjetivo than ...
Exemplos:
A house is more comfortable than an apartmaent. = Uma casa é mais confortável que um
apartamento.
A car is more expensive than a motorcycle.
The adjetivo + est
Exemplo:
This is the nicest thing you’ve ever said.
I am the tallest in my family. = Sou o mais alto da família.
- Para adjetivos longos usa-se The most + adjetivo
Who is the most beautiful girl in your class?
He is the most intelligent person I have ever met.

Exemplos:
Either ... or (= ou ... ou, nem ... nem).
Neither ... nor (= nem ... nem (sem o not).
Both ... and (= tanto ... quanto).
Not only ... but also (= não somente ... mas também).
Exemplos em frases:

-He could go neither right nor left (= Ele não poderia ir nem para a direita, nem para a esquerda).
-Both he and she are special (= Tanto ele, quanto ela são especiais).
-Teachers are not only teachers, but also friends (= Os professores não são somente professores,
mas amigos, também.)
Conjunções que dão idéias opostas. (lista 3)

eles e garantindo a coesão textual. As principais preposições em inglês são:
(lista 4)
At : em, no, para, na (s), em direção a.
In: dentro de, em, no (a), nos (as).
Between: entre (2 elementos).
Behind: atrás, na parte de trás.
Under: abaixo, debaixo de.
29
Beside: ao lado de.
Over: acima de, sobre.
Out/off: fora, para for a.
Prática:
Traduza os termos sublinhados.
A hi-tech company in the U.K. launched a text messaging service that automatically destroys e-mails 40 seconds after people open them. This should be popular with anyone who wants secrets to stay secret. Subscribers have to download an application called StealthText to their mobile phone to use the service. The software’s developer hopes its product will appeal to business people who deal with sensitive information. A representative said the company wants to give e-mail senders more control over the messages they send instead of trusting recipients to delete them.
9- VOZ PASSIVA
sempre pelo verbo auxiliar to be e pelo particípio passado do verbo principal:
Verbo to be (conjugado no tempo verbal adequado à situação) + past participle do verbo que
contém a informação.
Exemplos:
-Brazil was discovered in 1500 (O Brasil foi descoberto em 1500, voz passiva).
-Pedro Alvares Cabral discovered Brasil (Pedro A.C. descobriu o Brasil, voz ativa).
- I was given a round-trip ticket to the Bahamas (by my boss). (Foi-me dada uma passagem de
ida-e-volta para as Bahamas).
9.1 Reported Speech
"Reported Speech" (= discurso indireto) é usado para relatar o que aconteceu em um diálogo, sem
que se precise usar aspas. Ex.: Direct Speech --> she said: "I don't want to go to the party." (ela
30
disse “Eu não quero ir à festa”). Pronomes Pessoais, Pronomes Objetivos e Adjetivos Possessivos
Reported Speech --> “She said (that) she didn't want to go to the party”.
alterações pertinentes, conforme a tabela abaixo:
Direct Speech Reported Speech Example
Simple Present Simple Past He said: "I want some tea." He said he wanted some tea.
Present Continuous Past Continuous They said: "We are working hard." They said they were working hard.
Simple Past Past Perfect She said: "I rented to help this house." She said she had rented that house.
Past Continuous Past Perfect Continuous Jim said: "I was talking to Susan." Jim said he had been talking to Susan.
Present Perfect Past Perfect They said: "We've studied together." They said they had studied together.
Going to- Future was/were going to. He said: "I'm going to invite you". He said He was going to visit me".
Must Had to She told me: "I must go now." She told me she had to go at the moment.

10- IF SENTENCES
possibilidade real:
'IF' CLAUSE MAIN CLAUSE If + simple present If you heat ice (se aquecer o gelo) If it rains (se chover)
simple present it melts. (ele derrete). you get wet (você se molha).
'IF' CLAUSE MAIN CLAUSE If + simple present If it rains (se chover) If you don't hurry (se não se apressar)
Simple future you will get wet (você se molhará). we will miss the train (perderemos o trem).
no conditional (would), indicando hipótese irreal:
'IF' CLAUSE MAIN CLAUSE If + simple past If it rained (se chovesse) If you went to bed earlier (se você fosse para cama mais cedo)
Present conditional you would get wet (você se molharia). you wouldn't be so tired (não estaria tão cansado).
conditional (would have), indicando uma situação hipotética no passado:
32
'IF' CLAUSE MAIN CLAUSE If + past perfect If it had rained (se tivesse chovido) If you had studied harder (se tivesse estudado bastante)
Perfect conditional you would have got wet (você teria se molhado). you would have passed the exam (você teria passado no exame).

11.4 Irregular Verbs
freqüência, tanto no inglês falado, quanto no inglês escrito.
A formação do past e
irregular (lista 7).

Prática: leia o texto abaixo atentamente e responda as aquestões propostas: Netizen When the internet began, 'net' became a new prefix. We had words like 'net news' and 'net
speak' and all sorts of things like that. And then it became a suffix as well, hyper net, news net and so on. And then blends started to appear, with a familiar word changed. So we had 'netizen' - that is, a citizen of the internet, an internet citizen, netizen for short, somebody who lives their whole life there. And these people are also called 'netties', or 'netters' or even 'net-heads', I've heard. And then we get 'netiquette' - the conventions which govern acceptable behaviour when engaging in internet dialogue. The etiquette of internet, netiquette, especially used in emailing and chat rooms. Many sites actually offer guidance about how to behave linguistically. There's a joke about this which relies on that little symbol, you know, the @ symbol, which you use in your email address, david.cystal @ so and so dot com. Here's the joke: How do you know you're a real netizen? Answer: When all of your friends have an @ in their names!
a) Retire do texto três verbos irregulares no passado.
c) Traduza as palavras grifadas.
d) Explique o significado de “netizen”.
e) O que é 'netiquette'?
11.5- Affixes
(jogar) e Player (jogador). Veja os exemplos abaixo:
Prefix Meaning Examples re- again or back revisit, reappear, rebuild,
refinance. dis- reverses the meaning of the verb disappear, disconnect,
discontinue. Over- Too much overbook, oversleep, overwork. un- reverses the meaning of the verb unbend, unfasten. mis- badly or wrongly misspell,
misinform, misidentify. co- together co-exist, co-operate. de- do the opposite of devalue, deselect. Fore- earlier, before Foresee. sub- under/below subcontract, subdivide.
Tabela 9
42
citizenship (cidadania), dealership (revenda), dictatorship (ditadura), friendship (amizade),
(disponibilidade), complexity (complexidade), flexibility (flexibilidade), generosity
drummer (baterista), drier (secador), driver (motorista), eraser (apagador, borracha); -able
É importnte a memorização desses pronomes.
What – O quê, qual. Who – Quem. When – Quando. Where – Onde. Why – Por quê. Whose – De quem. Which – Qual. How – Como.
43
11.7- O Uso Do Dicionário
A tradução
No segundo caso, a Inteligência Artificial simplesmente traduz automaticamente as palavras
“Vote to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World”
44
The results of a worldwide vote to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World have been announced at a ceremony in Lisbon. In contrast to the wonders of the ancient world, the new list emerged from an exercise in which tens of millions of votes were cast by people around the world.
The Australian Bible Society has just created a new version of the Bible. People can now read the holy book in SMS message form. This is the text language used in millions of e-mail messages sent from mobile phones. It is the world’s most modern form of communication. Bible Society spokesman Michael Chant said: “The old days when the Bible was only available [with a] black cover with a cross on it are gone.…We want to open it up for people of all ages, backgrounds and interests.” It took one person four weeks to translate all 31,173 verses of the Bible.
11.9- Some / Any
Os pronomes some e any podem assumir diferentes traduções e serem compostos por
palavras.
resposta positiva) significando “algum, alguns, alguma, algumas” (Some people like apartments,
others prefer houses), (Would you like some coffee?). Any é usado para perguntas em geral,
significando “algum, alguns, alguma, algumas” e em negativas, significando “nenhum, nehuma”
(Do your have any brothers or sisters?), em frases afirmativas significa “qualquer”. Essas

12.1- Textos Analisados
How Hard Disks Work
Nearly every desktop computer and server in use today contains one or more hard-disk drives. Every mainframe and supercomputer is normally connected to hundreds of them. You can even find VCR-type devices and camcorders that use hard disks instead of tape. These billions of hard disks do one thing well - they store changing digital information in a relatively permanent form. They give computers the ability to remember things when the power goes out.
Hard disks were invented in the 1950s. They started as large disks up to 20 inches in diameter holding just a few megabytes. They were originally called "fixed disks" or "Winchesters" (a code name used for a popular IBM product). They later became known as "hard disks" to distinguish them from "floppy disks." Hard disks have a hard platter that holds the magnetic medium, as opposed to the flexible plastic film found in tapes and floppies.
At the simplest level, a hard disk is not that different from a cassette tape. Both hard disks and cassette tapes use the same magnetic recording techniques. Hard disks and cassette tapes also share the major benefits of magnetic storage - the magnetic medium can be easily erased and rewritten, and it will "remember" the magnetic flux patterns stored onto the medium for many years. Self-destructing mobile phone messages
A hi-tech company in the U.K. has launched a text messaging service that automatically destroys e-mails 40 seconds after people open them. This should be popular with anyone who wants secrets to stay secret. Subscribers have to download an application called StealthText to their mobile phone to use the service. The software’s developer Staellium UK hopes its product will appeal to both business people who deal with sensitive information and love cheats. A representative said the company wants to give e-mail senders more control over the messages they send instead of trusting recipients to delete them. The technology looks like something from a 007 movie. Staellium CEO Carole Barnum said the new service has “massive benefits for people from all walks of life”. She also said: “Ultimately, no one will have to worry about their messages or pictures ending up in the wrong hands ever again.” Staellium’s website suggests soccer superstar David Beckham might need SteathText. His friend Rebecca Loos suspiciously failed to delete his embarrassing mails last year. StealthText messages are not totally erased, but stay on a special computer. However, the recipient has no further access to them after 40 seconds. (breakingnewsenglish.com)
Estrutura Gramatical: has launched = lançou (Present Perfect); should be = deve ser (verbo

CAD
Observe:
Computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) is a form of automation that helps designers prepare drawings, specifications, parts lists, and other design-related elements using special graphics- and calculations-intensive computer programs. The technology is used for a wide variety of products in such fields as architecture, electronics, and aerospace, naval, and automotive engineering. Although CAD systems originally merely automated drafting, they now usually include three-dimensional modeling and computer-simulated operation of the model. Rather than having to build prototypes and change components to determine the effects of tolerance ranges, engineers can use computers to simulate operation to determine loads and stresses. For example, an automobile manufacturer might use CAD to calculate the wind drag on several new car-body designs without having to build physical models of each one. In microelectronics, as devices have become smaller and more complex, CAD has become an especially important technology. Among the benefits of such systems are lower product-development costs and a greatly shortened design cycle. While less expensive CAD systems running on personal computers have become available for do-it-yourself home remodeling and simple drafting, state-of-the-art CAD systems running on workstations and mainframe computers are increasingly integrated with computer-aided manufacturing systems. Most Internet cookies are incredibly simple, but they are one of those things that have taken on a life of their own. Cookies started receiving tremendous media attention back in 2000 because of Internet privacy concerns, and the debate still rages.
On the other hand, cookies provide capabilities that make the Web much easier to navigate. The designers of almost every major site use them because they provide a better user experience and make it much easier to gather accurate information about the site's visitors.
Cookies are not programs, and they cannot run like programs do. Therefore, they cannot gather any information on their own. Nor can they collect any personal information about you from your machine.
Here is a valid definition of a cookie: A cookie is a piece of text that a Web server can store on a user's hard disk. Cookies allow a Web site to store information on a user's machine and later retrieve it. The pieces of information are stored as name-value pairs. For example, a Web site might generate a unique ID number for each visitor and store the ID number on each user's machine using a cookie file.
48
If you use Microsoft's Internet Explorer to browse the Web, you can see all of the cookies that are stored on your machine. The most common place for them to reside is in a directory called c:\windows\cookies. When I look in that directory on my machine, I find 165 files. Each file is a text file that contains name-value pairs, and there is one file for each Web site that has placed cookies on my machine. (howstuffworks.com)

Computer programming
Computer programming (often shortened to programming or coding) is the process of writing, testing, and maintaining the source code of computer programs. The source code is written in a programming language. This code may be a modification of existing source or something completely new, the purpose being to create a program that exhibits the desired behavior. The process of writing source code requires expertise in many different subjects, including knowledge of the application domain, specialized algorithms, and formal logic.
Within software engineering, programming (the implementation) is regarded as one phase in a software development process. In some specialist applications or extreme situations a program may be written or modified by directly storing the numeric values of the machine code instructions to be executed into memory.
There is an ongoing debate on the extent to which the writing of programs is an art, a craft or an engineering discipline. (wikipedia.org)

Microsoft will soon enter the market to provide MP3 music downloads, which people can join and pay for every month. Microsoft has teamed up with the music video network MTV to make the rival service, which is called Urge. It will be a highlight of the soon-to-be-released Vista operating system. Unbelievably, Vista is the first major upgrade to Windows in more than half a decade. Unfortunately, Urge is in a totally different format to Apple’s iTunes, the current leader in digital music sales. This means anyone who has an iPod will not be able to use the Microsoft-MTV service unless they buy a separate music player. (breakingnewsenglish.com)

The United States economy grew at a strong annual rate of four per cent in the second quarter of this year, according to new figures from the Commerce Department. However, the data covers a period before the recent financial market difficulties. This report from Andrew Walker:
The new figures cover the three months up to the end of June. They represent a significant increase compared with the government's first estimate a few weeks ago. And they are a very pronounced improvement compared with the decidedly weak performance in the first three months of the year. Strong investment by American business was one of the main factors behind the faster growth.
There is some comfort for financial markets in these figures, but, it must be said, not very much. The recent volatility in credit markets and share prices is not reflected at all. It came a few weeks after the end of the period these figures cover. How will those events affect the wider economy remains the big question about them.
Traders in the markets are also trying to guess whether the Federal Reserve - the US central bank - will cut interest rates again to limit any economic consequences. Many are hoping the Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will give some clues when he speaks on Friday at a gathering of central bankers from around the world. Andrew Walker, BBC (bbc.co.uk)

The motherboard is the main part of your computer that everything else plugs into. Sometimes it is called the system board. A typical motherboard is a sheet of olive green or brown fiberglass with many gold lines on it and chips sticking from it.
By itself, the motherboard is just an empty plate. The stuff that sits on it does the work. On it, we have the CPU, SIMM sockets, BIOS, and slots. On some older boards, there is also a separate math-coprocessor. The gold lines act like roadways of information between all of the components. These roads enable the parts to communicate and perform the functions of your computer. (Davis Risley hardwarecentral.com)

Q: After I have edited an HTML file, I cannot view the result in my browser. Why?
A: Make sure that you have saved the file with a proper name and extension like
"c:\mypage.htm". Also make sure that you use the same name when you open the file in your
browser.
Q: I have edited an HTML file, but the changes don't show in the browser. Why?
A: A browser caches pages so it doesn't have to read the same page twice. When you have
modified a page, the browser doesn't know that. Use the browser's refresh/reload button to force
the browser to reload the page.

A personal computer
51
fig 5
A personal computer (PC) is a computer whose price, size, and capabilities make it useful for individuals. We may never know who coined the phrase with the intent of a small affordable computing device but John W. Mauchly described such a device in a November 3, 1962 New York Times article entitled "Pocket Computer may replace Shopping List". Six years later a manufacturer took a risk at referring to their product this way when Hewlett Packard advertised their "Powerful Computing Genie" as "The New Hewlett Packard 9100A personal computer". This advertisement was too extreme for the target audience and replaced with a much drier ad for the HP 9100A programmable calculator. During the next 7 years the phrase had gained usage so when Byte magazine, published its first edition it referred to its readers as being in the "personal computing field” while Creative Computing defined the personal computer as a "non-(time)shared system containing sufficient processing power and storage capabilities to satisfy the needs of an individual user." Two years later when the 1977 Trinity of preassembled small computers hit the markets, the Apple II and the PET 2001 were advertised as 'personal computers' while the TRS-80 was a microcomputer used for household tasks including "personal financial management". By 1979 over half a million microcomputers were sold and the youth of the day had a new concept of the personal computer. Personal computers can be categorized by size and portability: Desktop computers, Laptop or notebooks, Personal digital assistants (PDAs), Portable computers, Cell Phones. (wikipedia.org)

Bluetooth: (logo bluetooth)
Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs). Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices like personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers and digital cameras via a secure radio frequency. A Bluetooth device playing the role of the "master" can communicate with up to 7 devices playing the role of the "slave". Every device also has a 24-bit class identifier. This provides information on what kind of device it is (Phone, Smartphone, Computer, Headset, etc).

WiFi: Many people use wireless networking to connect their computers at home. In the near future, wireless networking may become so widespread that you can access the Internet just about anywhere at any time, without using wires. WiFi has a lot of advantages. Wireless networks are easy to set up and inexpensive. A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna. A wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. It sends the information to the Internet using a physical, wired Ethernet connection. Wireless adapters can plug into a computer's PC card slot or USB port.

a) Default: The pre-defined configuration of a system or an application. In most programs,
defaults can be changed to reflect personal preferences.
b) Domain: Represents an IP (Internet Protocol) address or set of IP addresses that comprise
a domain. The domain name appears in URLs to identify web pages or in email addresses.
For example, the email address for the First Lady is [email protected],
“whitehouse.gov” being the domain name. Each domain name ends with a suffix that
54
indicates what “top level domain” it belongs to. These are: “.com” for commercial, “.gov”
for government, “.org” for organization, “.edu” for educational institution, “.biz” for
business, “.info” for information, “.tv” for television, “.ws” for website. Domain suffixes
may also indicate the country in which the domain is registered. No two parties can ever
hold the same domain name.
c) MHZ: An abbreviation for Megahertz, or one million hertz. One MHz represents one
million clock cycles per second and is the measure of a computer microprocessor's speed.
For example, a microprocessor that runs at 300 MHz executes 300 million cycles per
second. Each instruction a computer receives takes a fixed number of clock cycles to
carry out, therefore the more cycles a computer can execute per second, the faster its
programs run. Megahertz is also a unit of measure for bandwidth.
d) Virus: An unauthorized piece of computer code attached to a computer program or
portions of a computer system that secretly copies itself from one computer to another by
shared discs and over telephone and cable lines. It can destroy information stored on the
computer, and in extreme cases, can destroy operability. Computers can be protected from
viruses if the operator utilizes good virus prevention software and keeps the virus
definitions up to date. Most viruses are not programmed to spread themselves. They have
to be sent to another computer by e-mail, sharing, or applications. The worm is an
exception, because it is programmed to replicate itself by sending copies to other
computers listed in the e-mail address book in the computer. There are many kinds of
viruses, for example:
Boot viruses place some of their code in the start-up disk sector to automatically execute
when booting. Therefore, when an infected machine boots, the virus loads and runs.
File viruses attached to program files (files with the extension “.exe”). When you run the
infected program, the virus code executes.
Macro viruses copy their macros to templates and/or other application document files.
Trojan Horse is a malicious, security-breaking program that is disguised as something
benign such as a screen saver or game.
Worm launches an application that destroys information on your hard drive. It also sends
a copy of the virus to everyone in the computer's e-mail address book.

Device Driver
A device driver, or software driver is a computer program allowing higher-level computer programs to interact with a computer hardware device. A driver typically communicates with the device through the computer bus or communications subsystem to which the hardware is connected. When a calling program invokes a routine in the driver, the driver issues commands to the device. Once the device sends data back to the driver, the driver may invoke routines in the original calling program. Drivers are hardware-dependent and operating-system-specific. They usually provide the interrupt handling required for any necessary asynchronous time-dependent hardware interface. Device drivers simplify programming by acting like a translator between a device and the applications or operating systems that use it. The higher-level code can be written independently of whatever specific hardware device it may control. Every version of a device, such as a printer, requires its own specialized commands. In contrast, most applications access devices (such as sending a file to a printer) by using high-level, generic commands, such as PRINTLN. The driver accepts these generic statements and converts them into the low-level commands required by the device.
