Brightstars double digit growth was straining capacity of its previous multi-vendor storage infrastructure. The expansion was driven primarily by software as a service offerings providing customers with strategic sourcing and supply optimization software and virtual inventory platforms. Therefore time to market was critical and Brightstars IT organization was under intense pressure to quickly provision customer environments.

With a mixed storage environment and only 30% of its environment virtualized, Brightstar was struggling to meet these demands. After evaluating several vendors, Brightstar decided on VCE Vblock Systems leveraging EMC VNX unified storage.

With Vblock Systems, Brightstar gained a converged infrastructure across storage, compute, networking and virtualization. For maximum performance, the Vblock includes VNX unified storage configured with FAST Cache to use a Flash 1st strategy. VNX supports all core applications including Oracle Database 11g, Oracle JD Edwards ERP, Hyperion Financial Management as well as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, and Microsoft SharePoint. Brightstar also replaced its tape-based backup with EMC Data Domain deduplication systems. The company replicates this data to another Data Domain system located more than 1000 miles away.

By virtualizing and deploying Vblock Systems Brightstar is now more agile. For example customer demand typically spikes during the holiday shopping season and they see a huge uptick in the need for storage and compute after Thanksgiving.

Their Director of Infrastructure Architecture and Operations states: Because of the agility enabled by our EMC and VMware solutions, we just move the slide bar and increase capacity in near real time to keep with demand during the holiday season.

In addition their time to market has dramatically improved with VMware and VNX automation new hardware environments can be delivered in days versus the months it took before to order, deploy and configure hardware.

FAST Cache and Flash 1st have helped dramatically improve optimization of storage resources. Through a storage tiering strategy with FAST VP they are able to put the bulk of their storage on a small number of flash drives and tier to lower cost drives when data is not longer needed to be accessed saving between 30 and 40 percent on storage investments. In addition their Oracle JD Edwards reports are now able to process in 2 minutes versus 20 minutes before.

So your probably wondering what is a Vblock System?

The compute resources are made up of Cisco UCS Gen 1 or Gen 2 fabric interconnects, 5108 blade server chassis, FC are 2014XP, 2008XP and we are currently including B-Series M2 and M3 generation blades for a very powerful compute.

The network layer is comprised of Nexus 1000v virtual switch, a pair of Nexus 5548UP Ethernet switches, and a pair of MDS 9148 SAN switches for robust expandability to address critical capabilities like replication, mobility and backup solutions. On the series 700MX, optional MDS switches include 9508, 9513, 7010.

The storage layer is designed around EMC VNX for series 300 and VMAX for series 700. These are unified storage options that include the 5300, 5500, 5700 and 7500 models (for VNX)and software, as well as RecoverPoint for advanced replication capabilities. On the series 700 it includes VMAX 10K & 20K.

Virtualization layer is provided by VMware vSphere 5.0, vCenter Server 5.0 & ESXi host/hypervisor layer.
