Section 4: Online SurveyThis survey will assist the Information Technology Division and University Library in providing appropriate technology resources and training to students. On average, it takes five minutes or less to complete.

IMPORTANT! Two students working together at one computer should each respond to the survey independently, so that the data from survey responses represents the entire population of new students. First, one person should answer the questions and submit responses. Then, redisplay the survey page, and the other person should answer the questions, and submit responses.

ON A WINDOWS PC and ON A MAC1. Login: type uniqname and press enter or return.2. Password: type password and press enter or return.

Choose a new safe and secure passwordBefore changing your password, think about your new one. Select a unique password, not a word that can be found in the dictionary. A good password length is 9 to 15 characters. Uniqname passwords at U-M should contain a mix of upper case, lower case, digits, and punctuation characters. However, do not use a blank space or a slash (/).A method that works for many people is to make up a phrase and use the first letter of each word, including numbers and punctuation. Whatever your method, do not tell it to anyone. Be sure you can remember your new password, but don’t write it down.

Section 9: File StorageAll students have ten megabytes (10 MB) of centralized electronic file store in the Institutional File System (IFS). Engineering students have additional file space in CAEN AFS directories; instructions for AFS will be given to Engineering students separately.

Access IFS at a Campus Computing SiteAfter you have logged in to a computer at a Campus Computing Site using [email protected] (except for computers at the Media Union on North Campus), you can easily access your IFS home directory.

ON A WINDOWS PC ON A MAC1. Click on My IFS Home Directory. 1. Click on home via netatalk.

Your IFS home directory will open. (Or the home directory of the person who logged in to the computer.)

Note to Engineering students: If you have logged in to a computer at a Campus Computing Site using your Engin login and you want to get to your IFS space you can either log out of the computer and log in again to umich.edu (rather than engin.umich.edu) using your UMICH password—or you can ftp to IFS using login.itd.umich.edu and your UMICH password. Save files in IFSFiles can be dragged in and out of your home directory with the mouse. (You should open and work on files on the desktop, rather than within your home directory on IFS)

Access IFS off campusSoftware and instructions for accessing your IFS home directory from your own computer is available. The software is called Samba for a Windows PC and netatalk for a Macintosh.

Would you like to learn more? Yes! To learn more about IFS http://www.itd.umich.edu/ittdoc/ and type Samba or netatalk in the Search box.
