IMPORTANT 2017 DATES
Why Bother?
Taken from https://www.lhm.org/dailydevotions/default.asp?date=20070208
While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the
synagogue ruler, “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher any
more?” Mark 5:35
Several years ago, a teacher working in a children’s hospital was asked to visit a boy in
the burn unit. His regular teacher had called with the request, “We’re studying nouns
and adverbs. I’d be grateful if you could help him with his homework so he doesn’t fall
too far behind the others.” The teacher went, but wasn’t prepared for what she found.
The boy was bandaged and in pain. She said, as softly as she could, “I’m the hospital
teacher. Your teacher at school asked me to help you with your nouns and adverbs.”
The next day a nurse asked, “What did you do to that boy?” Before the teacher could
offer her apologies for being uncomfortable and unprepared, the nurse continued,
“We were worried about him. But ever since you visited, his entire outlook has
changed. For the first time he’s actually fighting. He’s responding. He’s got a new lease
on life.”
What had happened? The boy had given up. He had felt hopeless and helpless. But
then he realized, “The school wouldn’t waste its time and concern by sending a
teacher to work on nouns and adverbs with a dying boy, would they?”
Maybe you, like that boy, have given up. Perhaps your moment of misery came with
the death of a person, a dream, a hope, or a vision. Maybe a loved one deceived you
or a friend deserted you. Hopelessness or helplessness can come any number of ways.
Did you go to God, or did you say: “Why bother God? What can He do? This is my
problem.”
There are only two reasons you would feel that way. First, you believe the situation is
beyond God’s help; you have concluded your hurt is untouchable. The second reason
you might not bother God is you think you’re too small for Him to care. You think since
everyone has forgotten you that God has, too. If you hold to either of those opinions,
you are wrong. God does care and He can bring about change in your life. He, who
gave His Son to die for you, who has already rescued you from sin, death, and devil,
can save you from this problem as well. So why bother God? Because He is the only
one who can bring you from darkness to light, from pain to peace. Trust Him.
THE PRAYER: Lord, I humbly submit to You today to ask for Your forgiveness for thinking
that there is any situation beyond Your power. I give all of my problems, complaints,
and burdens to You. You are the only one who can solve it. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

From the
Principal…..
Yes, it is a special week this week as we celebrate Reformation
marking 500 years when Martin Luther sent his now famous 95
theses to the Wittenberg Church. Each class has been learning
about different aspects of what Martin Luther was involved in at
that time and why it was significant. This quote is one that I
particularly like as it talks about hope and living in hope. As a
Christian school we believe in providing an environment that allows
hope to blossom so that students can grow as God’s children and
to be inquirers, risk-takers, principled and open-minded individuals.
Kapunda Show
Thank you to parents and staff for helping with the school’s stall at the Kapunda Show on the
weekend. Thank you to Sophie Nietschke for representing our school so proudly at the stall
throughout the day as our school captain. It was a lovely day where many families visited us.
Our Pedal Prix car was of real interest to people walking past and a number of older members
of the community came up and shared with me their experiences as a past student of our
school.
Choir Performance
I would like to congratulate our School Choir for its performance at the Kapunda Show on the
weekend. The students sang beautifully and many commented on how ‘in tune’ and clear
they were. Thank you to Mrs Mandy Verco for leading such a talented group of singers.
Thank you
During Week One of this term a Staff Appreciation Lunch was organised by our Class Carers,
under the leadership of our Care Coordinator, Lynn Grosser to acknowledge and thank all
staff for the wonderful work they do here at St John’s. The theme this year was based around
‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ with lots of delicious food which was very much appreciated by all
staff. As staff, we thank our Class Carers and many other parent volunteers in our school for
their generous contributions and dedication to help make St John’s a wonderful school to be
a part of.
Book Sale
Thank you to Mrs Brenda Verrall for the huge job she undertook to clear the shelves in the
library to make way for new books, move the old books to the Hall and set up the Book Sale
tables. Thank you also to the students and parents who purchased books at the sale. The
proceeds will go towards new books and resources for our school library.

Student-led Conferences
Over the last two weeks students from Foundation to Year Five have shared their learning
through participating in Student-led Conferences; hence all students in our school have now
completed conferences with their parents.
The Middle Primary students explained to their parents a number of activities which
contributed to their understanding of how cartoons have affected the way we look at
ourselves as individuals and societies. The Junior Primary students presented their learning
through a number of curriculum areas to reveal what they had learned through inquiring into
the Central Idea, ‘Reducing waste saves useful materials that will run out.’
From all accounts, reporting to parents through these conferences was a positive experience
for students, parents and staff. It was rewarding to witness the enthusiastic interactions that
took place in the classrooms and the students’ development in the attributes of the Learner
Profile.
Thank you to all parents from Foundation to Year Seven who attended conferences with their
children and provided feedback this semester. Our Student-led Conferences ran very
smoothly due to support from parents, the growing confidence and knowledge of students
and the commitment of our staff to this reporting process.

PYP Attitude
Integrity…..
Integrity – being honest and demonstrating a considered sense of fairness
Foundation
I am honest when I know what to do and ask the teacher if I don’t. Grace Jenke
I try not to fight with my sister. Marissa Ross
I am honest when I get better at writing. I try to learn new things and tricky words.
Emma Doering
I am honest when I play the rat game. I follow the rules. Marty Mosey
Year Six/Seven
Year Four/Five
The Year Four/Five students read the picture book, ‘Ruthie and the
not so tiny lie’ by Laura Rankin. They discussed how Ruthie told lies
and stole precious items from other people which are examples of
Ruthie not showing integrity. Here are some of the thoughts the
Year Four/Five students had about integrity:
Integrity means being honest
You can show integrity by handing in money that you find
You show integrity when you are fair to other people
Nobody should steal – they shouldn't be like Ruthie
I should always give something back to other people if it isn't
mine
Sometimes I don't show integrity because I lie to my brothers
and sisters
I don't show integrity when I take things from my parents
without asking – like money.
I show integrity because I am
honest and I take responsibility for
my actions and when people are
doing something bad I don’t take
part in it. Khalif Leopold

Achievements
of past students…..
We continue to acknowledge the achievements of past students ...
Thomas Kleinig
In February this year, Tom attended an assessment session for a position as an Aeronautical Engineer.
This involved an interview on the role of an Aeronautical Engineer, an interview with a psychologist and
medical testing. After being told of his success on this day, Tom had to go to Canberra to sit before an
Officer Selection Board as required by the Officer aspect of the role.
In Canberra, he also gave an oral presentation on a topic in which he
had twenty minutes to create a three-minute speech. Tom was also
involved in group activities with other Air Force candidates and then had
an interview, facing a board comprised of the Head of the Australian
Defence Force Academy, a Psychologist and another Senior Air Force
Officer. Tom was notified of his successful application in the first round of
offers and was offered a position in the Air Force officially. In late August,
Tom was also notified that he had received an ADFA Education Award,
which recognised his outstanding Selection Process success as well as his
vast leadership and academic attributes shown throughout Year 11 at
Faith Lutheran College. It was very humbling for both Tom and his
parents to hear that only three of these awards were given in South
Australia this year. At the start of February 2018 Tom will be off to the
ADFA to continue his studies.
In mid-September, Thomas was presented with the award by Major Scutchings in front of the Faith
Lutheran College community.
Aaron Nietschke
Aaron began playing for Central Districts Football Club in Under 16’s in
2016 and this year has played in their Under 18’s team. He was
selected in the 2017 McDonald’s SA Under 17 Futures Squad. After a
few weeks of trials he was selected in the final team to play in Perth
against Western Australia which his team won in June this year. The
Under-17 Futures concept has been expanded to assist AFL recruiting
scouts with tracking players further in advance, which has taken on
greater importance with AFL clubs now able to trade future draft
picks. Aaron’s team was coached by Julian Farkas, the SANFL Talent
Pathways Manager who stated that Aaron has been playing some
magnificent footy for Centrals Under 18’s.
Aaron is currently a member of the Under 18’s Academy Squad and
played at Adelaide Oval in the match before the SANFL Reserves
Grand Final.

Mr Blasche—Year One/Two
Central Idea: Reducing waste saves useful materials that will run out
Transdisciplinary Theme: Sharing the planet
Concepts: Connection ~ Perspective ~ Responsibility
Lines of Inquiry:
Actions that benefit or harm the local environment
Reusing and recycling different materials
Reducing waste
Approaches to Learning: Thinking Skills
Learner Profile Attributes: Caring ~ Principled
Attitudes: Commitment ~ Respect
As part of our inquiry, the Foundation, Year One and Year Two students went on an
excursion to the North Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA). This gave us
the opportunity to build on our understanding of recycling, reusing and reducing. Our
students were able to sort materials into the correct bins, view the way in which waste
is disposed of and discover some tricks to make recycling easy.
