InJanuary,theHamiltonCountyBoardofEducationvoted63infavorofbeginningnegotiationstobuyoutSuperintendentRickSmithscontractinthewakeofpubliccriticismregardinghisapproachtotheOoltewahHighSchoolrapecase.Smithreceivedtremendouspublicpressureafterhewaited20daysbeforespeakingpubliclyaboutthecaseandwaited2weeksbeforecancelingtheteamsbasketballseason.
Now,morethanever,itisimportantforthecitizensofHamiltonCountytoholdourelectedofficialsaccountablefortheiractionsanddemandtransparencyinthedecisionsthataffectourcommunity.In2011,theSchoolBoardhiredourcurrentSuperintendentwithoutdoingasearchandwithoutaformalcommunityinputprocess.Wewanttomakesurethistimeisdifferent.Webelieveourcommunityshouldhaveastrongvoiceindeterminingwhowillbechosenasthenewleaderofourschoolsystem.UnifiEdwillbehostingaseriesofcommunityconversationstobetterlearnwhatourcommunitymembersvalueinschoolleadership.OurfirstcommunityconversationwillbeonFebruary22ndat6pmatUnifiEd(1609McCallieAve.).Staypostedformore

bullyingandharassmentisoneofthemostpressingissuesfacingstudentstoday.UnifiEd'sStudentVoiceTeamhasbeenworkingsincelastyeartobringattentiontobullyinganddiscriminationinschools.WelearnedthatthecurrentHCDEpolicy6.304regardingStudentDiscrimination/Harassment/HazingandBullying/Intimidationdoesnotcomplywithstatelaw.
