Informing
There are several different types of sub-speeches that fall under the category of “informative speeches”.– Descriptive Speeches– Expository Speeches– Analysis/Evaluation Speeches– Explication Speeches– Compare and Contrast Speeches
Descriptive & Expository Speeches
Descriptive Speeches– Detail oriented speeches that call the audience to
envision a person, place, thing or event that they are not familiar with.
– EXAMPLE: “Describe the 9/11.” “Tell your friends about your trip to Rome.”
Expository Speeches– Speech designed to explain a process, idea, belief, or
concept. (These are less concrete and can be more difficult.)
– EXAMPLE: “Explain your company’s benefits package.” “Explain the process of Photosynthesis.”
Analysis & Explication Speeches
Analysis/Evaluation Speeches– These speeches take a concept or situation and
break it down into its parts.– EXAMPLE: “Why Iraq is a threat to the U.S.”
“How government works.”
Explication Speeches– These speeches analyze or explain what is
obscure or implied.– EXAMPLE: “The fault of the anti-gay rights
argument.” “Why J-lo did that.”
Compare and Contrast Speeches
These speeches should pit opposing ideas, information or products against each other in a factual/nonbiased way.EXAMPLE: “Consumer Reports says that “Brawny’ is the best paper towel on the market.” “DeVry University as it compares to other universities.”WARNING!!! In an informative speech, the speaker should NEVER advocate the use of or participation in the subject because he/she is then delivering a persuasive speech.
