Adevastating7.8magnitudeearthquakeinNepal,numerousextremefloodingevents,communitiesdestroyedbyvolcanicactivity,andrecord-breakingwildfireswereamongthedisastersaffectingourworldin2015.Inaddition,astrongElNiñoeventincreasedthefrequencyandpoweroftropicalcyclonesaroundtheworld.PDCscientists,analysts,anddevelopersworkedtogethertogivedisastermanagersaccesstooneoftheworld’slargestopen-sourcehazardandrelateddatainventoriesandprovidedlife-savinginformationwherevernaturaldisastersstruck.Duringtheyear,inresponsetorequests,PDCcreatedmorethan375situationalawarenessproductstosupporthazardanddisastereventsthatoccurredworldwide.

Anatomy of PDC’s disaster response

IMPROVED PUBLIC OUTREACHThemorepeoplewereachthroughapplicationsandsocialmedia,thebetterwecandelivertimelydisaster-preventionandlifesavinginformation.Ourmobileapp,DisasterAlert,surpassed1.5milliondownloadsandwasrecognizedasoneofthetopdisasterappsavailabletothepublic.Inaddition,oursocialnetworkfollowersnearlydoubled,allowingustoexpandourreach.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND RELIEF TRAINING SUPPORTTrainingandexerciseeventsarecriticallyimportanttotestandimproveexistingprocessesandstayreadyfordisasterreliefoperations.PDCcollaboratedwithavarietyofpartnerstoprovideexercisescenario,modeling,staffplanning,andDisasterAWARE™integrationforvarious hazards.
