about To picture of Trakai Mother of God, a patron of Lithuania crowning - 300 yearsThe picture was painted in the middle of the 15th century and partially repainted in the early 17th century. it was a gift from the Byzantine emperor Manuel ii palaiologos to Grand duke Vytautas on the occasion of his baptism. on 4 september 1718, pope clement Xi sent Bishop konstanty kazimierz Brzostowski for the canonical coronation of the venerated image. it was the second icon of the Virgin crowned with papal crowns on the territory of the commonwealth.

northern lapwing is small bird. it is also the shortest-legged of the lapwings. it fly to north africa, north india and china to spend winter. at March bird returns to Lithuania from warm regions. This is a vocal bird in the breeding season. it likes open places – grasslands, pastures, cultivated fields. nests are built in short wards of grass. usually only one clutch of four eggs is laid.

in the centre of the painting, which was baptized in the media “only to people with strong nerves”, a huge palace made out of human bodies and which represent the state is depicted – this is our history, consisting of the lives of people who created it. next to the palace, there is rūpintojėlis that looks like Š. sauka and is wounded and dripping with puss. underneath his legs, ordinary people of the society of various epochs and times, such as writer Žemaitė, poet Julius Janonis, singer Virgilijus noreika, poet Bernardas Brazdžionis, presidents antanas smetona, aleksandras stulginskis and kazys Grinius, composer Juozas naujalis, historian simonas daukantas, philosopher Vydūnas, artist and composer Mikalojus konstantinas Čiurlionis, pilots steponas darius and stasys Girėnas, poet salomėja nėris, linguist Jonas Jablonskis, doctor Jonas Basanavičius, priest and poet Maironis, writers Vaižgantas and Balys sruoga, poets paulius Širvys, cardinal Vincentas sladkevičius and many more. This scene in the left hand corner of the picture is observed by a girl in a bright dress who is thinking – she is the future of Lithuania.

with the consent of the Vatican, after a long break, a limited edition postage stamp is issued for the visit of the holy father in Lithuania. The last time pope’s image was on the postage stamp was 7 years ago, and his official visit to Lithuania was 25 years ago. as the use of the image of the pontiff is strictly regulated, the postal stamp created by the painter aušrelė ratkevičienė was created in accordance with his holiness image and was in line with the Vatican.

pope francis (the real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio) who was elected on 13 March, 2013, is one of the most important world leaders and the moral authority for millions of believers. for a message of hope and encouragement to europe, contribution to global peace, the values of mercy, tolerance and solidarity, in 2016 he was presented with one of the most honourable awards in the world – charlemagne award.
