Winter mood The two lighthouses The two lighthouses at Breið are among Akranes’ main attractions. The older one on Suðurflös was built in 1918 while the Akranes lighthouse was built in 1943–1944. The Akranes lighthouse is open to the public all year. It offers an amazing view over the town and the surrounding mountains. During the festival you will find multiple concerts, art exhibitions, and other events. Artists from Akranes and visiting artists perform, some taking their first steps while others are more experienced. Northern lights During winter the northern lights sometimes dance around the lighthouses – a unique experience in good weather. Irish days (I. Írskir dagar) for the whole family and the famous Lopapeysuball danceIn the beginning of July every year, Akranes celebrates Irish days, a town festival. The festival offers diverse entertainment and activities for the whole family. The festival begins on a Thursday and ends on a Sunday.

Food and antiques marketThis summer Akratorg Square will host a food and antiques market on Saturdays. Beautiful antiques, organic food, ice cream and “skyr” straight from the farm.

Kalmansvík camping siteKalmansvík is a very well equipped camping area with access to electricity, showers and washing facilities. The camping site is located by the sandy shore in Kalmansvík with an amazing view and beautiful options for walking. Shops and services are within walking distance from the camping site.

SwimmingJaðarsbakkalaug is a 25-metre long swimming pool with hot pools and a water slide. The water comes from Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. Open all year.

LangisandurLangisandur beach is one of three Icelandic Blue Flag Beaches. In good weather Langisandur is often crowded with people. Sea swimming is ideal in Langisandur and the sunbathing area has a shower with hot water.

Golfing Garðavöllur is among the best 18 hole golf courses in Iceland. The course also has a very good practice area. The beautiful surroundings only add to the pleasure as the Akrafjall mountain watches over the course that lies along Garðalundur.

Akranes harbourThe harbour is a lively place as it consists of a few different sized piers. Several kinds of fish can be caught from the piers and fishermen of all ages can try their luck.

The Akranes Museum CentreThe local museum at Garðar has everything that makes a beautiful museum. This includes the sailing ship Sigurfari, Iceland’s mineral kingdom, and the Icelandic sports museum, as well as a coffee house and a gallery. Guests can also visit some of Akranes’ oldest houses.

BlacksmithingThe Icelandic championship in blacksmithing has been held in Akranes in the last few years, always in the beginning of June. The championship is held in the forge located in the museum area.

GarðalundurGarðalundur is a wooded area where the whole family finds something to do. Some enjoy looking at the different kinds of trees; others enjoy a walk in the beautiful surroundings. Garðalundur is an excellent place for a BBQ, beach volleyball, football, frisbee golf and more.

AkrafjallAkrafjall Mountain is home to various species of birds. Akrafjall is easy to climb with hiking trails for beginners as well as advanced hikers.

WalksAkranes is located on the lowlands, which means it’s easy for anyone to walk. The shoreline offers various hiking trails and for those who want a little bit of a challenge, Akrafjall mountain is not far away. Garðalundur also has lovely trails for the whole family. If you prefer, you can also rent a bike.
