Exceptional PERFORMANCE

We will challenge ourselves and our boys to be exceptional performers. This is a statement of intent, an aspiration, and a call to

action. We understand that we may falter at times but we are compelled to commit to this standard. In doing so we will generate

the energy and purpose that are fundamental to great schools.

Welcome to Junior School I extend a warm welcome to all members of our Ipswich Grammar School community and look forward to another exciting year ahead. Our Junior School is a place where boys thrive. Highly qualified staff provide a warm, supportive environment that enables every boy to achieve beyond their expectations. The curriculum delivered is both broad and challenging. Explicit teaching of literacy and numeracy is supported by a range of subject offerings that enable every boy to find their passion. A vibrant arts program is complimented by extensive sporting opportunities including participation in the prestigious GPS competition. It is not uncommon to see our boys arrive at school with a musical instrument under one arm and a football or cricket bat under the other! Parents are partners in their child’s education journey and are encouraged to assist in the instilling of our core values and the boys’ social development into IGS gentlemen. The supportive school culture we have allows boys to feel safe and secure as well as enjoying a true sense of belonging through the extraordinary school pride and spirit of Ipswich Grammar. Thank you for entrusting your son’s education to Ipswich Grammar. A love of learning and lifelong friendships begins here. Mark Douglas Head of Junior School

Absenteeism Parents should notify the school of their son’s absence by contacting Junior School Reception by 8.30 am on the day of absence. Ideally, messages of absence are best left on the Junior School Absentee Line (3813 9666) or dial Junior School Reception (3813 9630) and follow the prompts. Students are expected to return to school with a note from their parents explaining the reason for their absence. These notes are to be addressed to their class teacher and handed to them on the day of return. (Please note that attendance records are legal documents and need to be maintained accurately.) Prep to 6 Temporary Absences: If a student is late or needs to leave school during school hours, then it is necessary for a parent/care-giver to escort the student to and from Junior School Reception. All Prep – Year 6 students must be signed in and out at the Junior School Reception.

Academic Organisation Lesson bells: The school bell system notifies students and staff of the changes in lesson periods. These periods are used predominantly in Middle and Senior schooling. However, Junior School classes require this notification due to specialist lessons organised in alignment with some Middle and Senior schooling staffing arrangements. Period Duration: A lesson (or period) is of 50 minute duration and there are 6 periods each day. On Mondays and on any other day when a Year 5-12 Assembly is scheduled, lesson times are adjusted slightly to accommodate the Assembly after Period 2 and running from 10.00am until Morning Tea at 10.45am.

. Arrangement of lessons: There are 2 lessons before the Morning Tea break, 3 lessons to lunch and only 1 lesson in the afternoon. This arrangement is deemed to be the best for our hot climate. Details are as follows: 8.30 am - 8.40 am Form Period 8.40 am - 9.30 am 1st Period 9.30 am - 10.20 am 2nd Period

10.20 am - 10.50 am Morning Tea

10.50 am - 11.40 am 3rd Period 11.40 am - 12.30 pm 4th Period

12.30 pm - 1.20 pm 5th Period 1.20 pm - 2.05 pm Lunch 2.00 pm 5 minute warning bell for afternoon session 2.05 pm to 2.55 pm 6th Period

These times are occasionally altered to accommodate House Meetings

Year 5 to 12 Assembly is every second Monday 10.00 am to 10.45 am

Accidents and Sickness (see also Exclusion Illnesses) In cases of illness or injury, students report to Junior School Reception for initial First Aid treatment. Should further care be required, they will either be referred to the Health Centre or parents will be contacted. When reporting to the Health Centre, a student must present a sick bay referral card (from Junior School Reception) or a note in the diary from the classroom teacher. Nursing staff or Reception staff will contact parents if the student has to go home; otherwise he will be treated and sent back to class. If an accident has resulted in physical injury, the student will be sent directly to the Health Centre and the Deputy Headmaster and/or Head of Junior School will be informed. Students must not report directly to the Health Centre without referral from staff unless approved, regular medication is required. Medication: If your son is taking any or regular medication, it must be handed to and administered at the Health Centre. It is of utmost importance that parents inform the school of any illnesses or medications in relation to his health. Any medication to be administered at school must be labelled and authorised by a doctor. The medication must be submitted at the Health Centre.

Activities To obtain the maximum benefit, every student should fully involve himself in the life of the school. This is best achieved by extra-curricular involvement in some activity throughout the year. This involvement is in no way detrimental to a student’s study program but, on the contrary, a most necessary adjunct to it. Academic & Cultural: A large program of Music, Chess, Debating, etc. is available at the school. As well, boys can become involved in clubs or groups when they are available. Extra-curricular activities are aimed to provide a gradual progression for the early years students towards the higher demands of the upper primary ages.

The GPS Association holds academic and cultural activities for boys also. These activities include Day of Music Excellence (and evening concert), Day of Academic Excellence, GPS Chess and GPS Debating. Sport: There are many sports available at IGS. Our big commitment in Years 5 to 12 is to the GPS sporting program and, consequently, these sports take preference. The GPS sports are Swimming, Cricket, Rugby, Cross-Country, Basketball, Tennis, Football and Track and Field. In the Junior School, students in Years Prep to 4 participate in sports skills clinics. These skills clinics are designed to develop fitness, skills and familiarity with the necessary elements for possible future participation in the GPS sports program.

Students are eligible to trial for all district representative teams and to represent the school at district swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals also.

PLEASE take care not to bring up any issues that require the teacher’s full attention at inappropriate times or places.

Assessment and Reporting All class teachers report formally to parents on the academic and pastoral progress of students at the end of each semester. An informal, interim statement of skills and progress is compiled towards the end of Term 1 to indicate to parents the student’s acquisition of core literacy skills and core numeracy skills which are required to achieve year level expectations, and also in pastoral attributes.

Page 10: Information Booklet for New Parents - Amazon S3s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/.../Information-Booklet-Prep-to-Y… · An informal, interim statement of skills and progress is compiled

Parent/ Student/ Teacher interviews are held in the first fortnight of Term 2 and the first fortnight of Term 3. All interviews are expected to foster the three-way partnership between parents, students and the school. Parents are welcome to contact their son’s class teacher at any time to arrange an interview. Other important methods of communication involve email, diary and telephone conversations. Teachers’ email addresses are constructed with: • Initial of first name + surname @ipswichgrammar.com • Email addresses are all lower case with no spaces and no punctuation between the initial

and surname” • Example – [email protected]

Before and After School Care (BASC)

Before and After School Care operates from 6.30 am to 8.00 am and 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm for students in Prep to Year 7 and offers quality care for busy parents. BASC can be used for occasional care as well as for regular bookings.

Students arriving at school prior to 8.00 am will automatically be placed into Before School Care supervision. Similarly, any student remaining at school and not in a regulated and supervised activity after 3.25 pm will be escorted to After School Care.

Further details are available from the Before and After School Care Parent Information Booklet which is available on the school website www.ipswichgrammar.com

• G10 Awards – recognising ‘gentlemen’ behaviour • Certificates; • Public, verbal acknowledgement; • In-class behaviour reward; • House points; • Visits to the Head of Junior School, Deputy Headmaster or Headmaster; Most behaviour issues are minor and will be dealt with at the class level. However, in the event of a serious misdemeanour or persistent misbehaviour, parents will be notified by the class teacher or Head of Junior School and an interview will be requested. If you have any queries regarding behaviour management please make contact with the school. No parent should ever approach another child or parent to discuss school-related behaviour issues.

Bicycles If students use bicycles as a means of transport to and from school, parents must ensure that the bicycles are maintained in good order and that they comply with the law. Parents need to inform the school of this transport mode. Students riding bicycles must wear a helmet as part of their school uniform and bring a chain to secure their bicycle.

Buses School buses leave from 3.05 p.m. each afternoon, and a late bus leaves at 4.45 p.m. Monday to Thursday to cater for boys practising sport or participating in other extra-curricular activities. When catching the bus at the beginning of the school year, students are to wait at a designated stop area on the bus route in full school uniform. The bus will automatically collect your son and deliver him to school. Within the first few weeks of school, a bus list will be handed to your son’s class teacher to note the bus he is catching. The Accounts Department will then issue a bus pass to your son via their teacher. Charter bus fares will be charged on each semester fees account. The conduct of students travelling on buses must be in accordance with the expectations of Ipswich Grammar School and Queensland Transport’s Code of Conduct for Students Travelling on Buses.

Page 16: Information Booklet for New Parents - Amazon S3s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/.../Information-Booklet-Prep-to-Y… · An informal, interim statement of skills and progress is compiled

Please contact your son’s Head of Year before proceeding with a change of hair style if you are unsure of the requirements.

1. Hair is to be cut short so that it can be kept neat and tidy at all times. 2. Hair should not be cut any shorter than an equivalent blade 3 comb. 3. No artificial colouring is acceptable. 4. Sideburns should be no lower than ¾ length of the ear and either blended or square

cut 5. Hair is to be cut so it sits off the ears and collar. Fringes, when brushed forward,

should not be any longer than the line of the eyebrows. Appropriate to length of side.

6. No abrupt change in length; cut-in designs or tracking; etc. will be unacceptable. 7. Hair products will not be used to spike hair to achieve an ‘unkempt’ look. 8. The School reserves the right to direct a student to get a haircut if the style is deemed

unacceptable. 9. A Head of Year/Head of School has the final judgment on the appropriate length

and style of each student’s hair.

Head Lice Most children will have some experience with head lice in their early years of schooling. The nature of their play is very conducive to the spread of head lice. If it is suspected that your child has head lice, we ask that you notify the school immediately so that an alert can be distributed asking all parents to check and treat their child if necessary. Head lice need not be an issue if all families follow the procedures set out by the Health Department.

Irregular Dress and Footwear There may be times when extenuating circumstances necessitate a student to come to school without some item of school uniform. In these cases, the student should have a note from his parents explaining the reason. This note should be addressed to the class teacher. If a student has an injured foot, it is acceptable to wear a slipper or thong (provided there is a note from the parent). Normal footwear is to be worn on the other foot.

Late Boys who arrive late to school (after 8.40 a.m.) must inform the Junior School Reception. Unless there is a major transportation problem involving a large number of students, e.g. a late train, students must provide their class teacher with a note from their parents detailing the reason for lateness. Parents of younger students delivering their son late will be required to inform reception and deliver their son to class.

Lost Property All belongings must be labelled clearly with the student’s full name. If any belongings are misplaced, there are lost property boxes on the Junior School verandah and in the Before & After School Care facility. If the article cannot be found, please report to the class teacher. All clothing, shoes, books, sporting equipment, etc. should be marked clearly with student’s name and class. Should an item be misplaced, students should initially check the Lost Property container. Following this, the student should contact their class teacher for assistance.

Parent Organisations Parent support groups are an integral part of the Ipswich Grammar community. Ipswich Grammar School incorporates a Parents and Friends’ Association (P&F), Junior School Parent Support Group and support groups for most sports and activities. Parents are encouraged to join one or more of these groups.

• Junior School Parent Support Group meets the first Monday of each month at 6.00 pm in the Earle Williams Literacy Centre.

• The P&F meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.00 pm • Information on other groups may be obtained by contacting the School

Administration.

Pick-up / Drop-off Zone This zone is located in front of the Junior School Reception (Drop-off zone) in the morning and at the Auditorium (Pick-up zone) in the afternoon and should be used by all students in Prep to Year 6 and younger siblings. Students with siblings in Prep or Year 1 must meet them at the pick-up zone collection point and sit together in order to be ready when their vehicle arrives. • Students in Prep to Year 1 are escorted by a staff member to the pick-up area; • All students in Years 2 to 6 must report to this area immediately upon dismissal from

class; • The student collection point is located at the front of the Auditorium. This vantage point

allows ample room for students to sit while supervised and remain vigilant for the arrival of their vehicle;

• Upon arrival of their vehicle, students are informed and sent to the driveway pick-up zone;

• Upon arrival, vehicles should move to the furthest available point in the pick-up zone without overtaking any other vehicles. Should a vehicle immediately in front leave, it is important and considerate, for all vehicles which are not in the process of loading passengers to move forward;

• Vehicles should maintain one single line of traffic without overtaking or pulling into vacant spaces as this inherently causes safety issues;

• Students must only enter vehicles from the footpath side; • Vehicles should depart the pick-up zone only once all passengers are securely belted. Morning delivery of Prep to Year 6 students (with or without younger siblings) operates in the same manner as above from 8.00-8.20 am with the same driver expectations. While IGS has no jurisdiction over the roadway or users of it, it is expected that parents and students will abide by Queensland Transport road rules and regulations and strive to maintain the aforementioned expectations for the benefit and safety of all.

Page 21: Information Booklet for New Parents - Amazon S3s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/.../Information-Booklet-Prep-to-Y… · An informal, interim statement of skills and progress is compiled

Parents delivering students to the classroom in the morning or collecting them in the afternoon must utilise available street parking. Woodend Road and Waghorn Street both have street parking available, as do most side streets. Please take note of any special parking conditions signed by the Ipswich City Council. Please note that all late arrivals, parents and visitors must report to Reception prior to attending any classrooms.

Reception Hours Junior School Reception: 8.00 am – 4.00 pm Secondary School Administration: 8.00 am – 4.00 pm

Rolls Rolls will be taken between 8.30 am – 8.40 am. In the Junior School, rolls will also be taken at the completion of Morning Tea and Lunch.

School Song and Hail

We’ve a song to sing, May its echoes ring From the Gulf to the Southern Bight; We’ve a School to praise, Which in former days, Has seen many a struggle and fi ght; We follow the rules, Of the ancient schools, Who have done so much for the world, May our deeds be known, And our work be shown, Wherever the flag is unfurled. CHORUS: Then together we’ll work, and together we’ll play, And welcome each chance of a holiday; Though our tasks may be long, We are brave, we are strong, In the Ipswich Grammar School. In the classroom work, We will never shirk, Though irksome our tasks may be ever, To History or Science We’ll bid defiance, Till we conquer by earnest endeavour; When exams are near, We’ll face without fear, The question so deep in design, We’ve prizes to gain Or a place to retain, so to duty ourselves we resign. CHORUS: When football we play, On a bright winter’s day, Tis the game of all games for a boy; Then its “willow the King”, Makes the echoes ring, And naught can our pleasure alloy; We swim and we run, Recreation is fun,

And important for whatever we do, As rivals in sport, Though our times may be short, We learn honour and manliness too. CHORUS: Yet to each comes a day, When our work and our play, Our school days forever are done; When sadly we part With love in our heart, from the school where our laurels were won; As onward we go, When in years we grow, and learn life’s great sorrows and joys; Whate’er may befall, Let us ever recall, The school where we battled as boys. Staff on duty in the eating areas check and distribute every order. Should a student have misplaced their lunch, measures are taken to check the situation prior to contacting parents and seeking permission for a simple replacement meal to be purchased from the tuckshop. An invoice for this meal is then forwarded to parents. Snacks such as chips or iceblocks are available through the same system. However, students are requested to present their order bag to the tuckshop in order to collect any frozen purchases. This prevents excessive melting before collection.

Appendix 1

CODE OF CONDUCT (Prep to Year 12)

One of the aims of Ipswich Grammar School is to continue the training in decency and good manners received by boys at home from their parents; and, to further this training so that a boy’s character is readily recognisable as that of a gentleman. Accordingly, rules and regulations are defined to ensure:

a) That a boy’s conduct, through self control and moderation, reflects credit on the boy himself, his parents and on this School; and

b) That the comfort, rights and safety of all School members be protected.

Day boys are reminded that they are subject to School discipline from the time they leave home to attend School or a School function until the time they return to their homes at the expiration of the School Day or the School function. Boarders are reminded that they are subject to School discipline at all times other than when they are under the direct control of their parents or guardians. The following regulations apply to all students attending this School:

1. Boys will, at all times, respect and comply with the lawful authority vested in Staff, Prefects and Monitors. 2. A boy’s personal appearance will be beyond reproach at all times. He will conform to the standard of dress and

personal grooming prescribed; and, those boys who shave must always appear clean-shaven. 3. No boy is permitted to smoke or to drink alcohol liquor on school premises, when wearing School uniform, or

when attending a function as a member of the School. At no time is he to use, or have in his possession, drugs other than those prescribed for his use by a medical practitioner. Boarders are not to have in their possession any tablets, medicine or drugs of any description.

4. The theft of or the wilful damage or destruction of any item of private, public or School property will be severely dealt with.

5. Matches, cigarette lighters, knives, firearms, fireworks, aerosol cans and pornographic material, as well as the instructions for preparation, or the actual preparation, of explosives, are strictly forbidden. Any form of substance abuse will be treated as an extremely serious offence.

6. Any form of bullying will not be tolerated. 7. Boys are expressly forbidden to play games near or loiter in the vicinity of motor cars belonging to visitors or to

any member of the School’s academic, administrative or ancillary staff. 8. Boys may drive motorcars to and from School only by complying with the regulations laid down. For further

directions on this matter they will report to the Year 12 Master. 9. Boys may not go beyond the School boundaries without the express consent of the Headmaster, Deputy

Headmaster, Year Masters or Housemaster. 10. Each boy must attend as a spectator or participate at two of the three GPS Championship events (Swimming,

Cross Country, Track and Field). 11. Cheating is regarded as a very serious offence and will be dealt with accordingly.

Our main aim in discipline is to ensure boys exhibit behaviours that identify them as young gentlemen and that no boy interferes with the right of another to learn. To achieve this, a wide variety of deterrents exist. These include: lunchtime detentions, loss of privileges, letters of apology, behaviour contracts, work cards, conduct cards, suspension and expulsion.
