DARE programma

Het programma Digital Academic Repositories (DARE) heeft gelopen van 2003tot 2006. Dit programma is ingezet op initiatief van de gezamenlijke Nederlandseuniversiteiten met het doel om al hun onderzoeksresultaten digitaal toegankelijkte maken. Ook de Koninklijke Bibliotheek, de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademievan Wetenschappen en de Nederlandse Organisatie voor WetenschappelijkOnderzoek sloten zich bij dit unieke samenwerkingsproject aan. SURFfoundationnam de coördinatie van het programma voor haar rekening.

Moderniseren

Met het DARE-programma is de Nederlandse wetenschappelijkeinformatiehuishouding gemoderniseerd via:

het realiseren van een repository infrastructuur;

het bieden van geavanceerde diensten voor het digitaal vastleggen, toegankelijk maken, bewaren endistribueren van de Nederlandse wetenschappelijke productie.

DARE programme

The Digital Academic Repositories programme (DARE) ran 2003 to 2006. It was set up by the Dutch universitieswith the intention of making their research results digitally accessible. The National Library of the Netherlands(KB), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and the Netherlands Organisation forScientific Research (NWO) are also members of this unique partnership. The programme was coordinated bySURFfoundation.

Modernising

The DARE programme aimed to modernise scientific/scholarly information management in the Netherlands by:

Cream of Science

The "Cream of Science" project was stated in 2005 to encourage the uploading of contentKeur der Wetenschapto repositories. By providing simple access to the publication lists of more than 200 leading Dutch scientists andscholars, DAREnet wished to focus attention on the importance of repositories for open access to research. Theresult of the project was a national research showcase on the Internet, featuring more than 50,000 publicationsby more than 200 top Dutch scientists and scholars.

Cream of Science was one of the high points of the DARE programme, drawing attention to the use ofrepositories to provide open access to research results. Some 25,000 full-text files were added to the existingscientific and scholarly research results in the Dutch repositories, and the project has acted as a model for anumber of similar projects in other countries. Another important result is that it was established that the copyrightin the digital version of publications from before 1998 is vested not in the publisher but in the author. DAREnet and DRIVER

DAREnet's success has inspired a European network of repositories, known as DRIVER (Digital RepositoryInfrastructure Vision for European Research). SURFfoundation plays a key role in this European project, whichis part of the European Commission's FP7 programme. DAREnet and NARCIS

DAREnet was launched in January 2004 as a model to demonstrate the repository network in the Netherlands. Itoffered a single access point to local digital collections at all Dutch universities and various related institutions,with a uniform method of presentation. This made DAREnet unique at that time: nowhere else in the world was itpossible to access a country's digital scientific and scholarly research output with such ease. DAREnet quicklydemonstrated the value of repositories in terms of worldwide access and long-term storage. SURFfoundationthen worked to create a permanent, more stable version of DAREnet.

When the DARE programme concluded (late 2006), control of DAREnet was transferred to the RoyalNetherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. SURFfoundation continues to work on innovating this infrastructure.DAREnet became part of , the Academy's science portal, in June 2008. NARCIS was developed by theNARCISAcademy and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) within the context of the DAREprogramme. Since then, the Academy has continued to work on the portal. Besides offering access to therepositories, NARCIS also permits searches for data on researchers, research organisations and current (orrecently concluded) research at all Dutch universities and research institutes. The thousands of datasets fromthe DANS Electronic Archiving System (EASY) can also be searched via NARCIS. When DAREnet wastransferred to the Academy, efforts were made to integrate the two search portals. This also includes the Creamof Science Site.

DARE Tender projects

Calls for tender have been put out so as to promote and maintain the uploading of scientific/scholarly researchmaterial to the repositories. The projects involve services or assistance for scientists/scholars that directlybenefit their work. Supplying research results to their institution's repository is important and therefore needs tobe easy and worthwhile.A total of 23 projects have been carried out:

ARNEX* The Agricultural Repository News Exchange draws attention to the results of agriculturalresearch.Connecting Africa* : Connecting Africa is a pilot service for African Studies in the Netherlands and theresult of the DARE?? project. The service comprises information about African studies experts associatedwith a large number of different university organisations in the Netherlands, together with details of theirpublications. It provides access via the Leiden repository to the digital versions of publications by theAfrican Studies Centre. DARELUX* (Data Archiving River Environment LUXemburg) is an important step on the way towardspermanent storage of scientific data. DARLIN* (Dutch ARchive for Library and INformation sciences) provides access to Dutch publications inthe field of library and information science. It is linked to the DARLIN journal, an open access multimediajournal containing material that has not previously been made available. DONOR* (the Dutch abbreviation for "data educational Netherlands online research") provides onlineaccess to research files of data on education. e-Depot for Dutch Archaeology (eDNA)* This comprises a selection of digital research results producedby Dutch archaeologists.Knowledge Bank for Universities of Applied Sciences: This was set up to make it easier to trace andaccess knowledge products generated at Dutch universities of applied sciences. It makes the largequantity of knowledge generated by students, teaching staff, and "lectors" (who organise knowledgenetworks) available to a worldwide public. NARCIS* : the central collection point for Dutch research information. This portal provides searchableaccess to full-text publications and information on research activities, scientific/scholarly institutes,researchers, and datasets. PROMAS* : PROMAS provides efficient, long-term and professional profiling of scientists, scholars, andinstitutes for all stakeholders. SCHOLAR(s) Economic Community* : This website brings together researchers in the field of training andlabour economics.Theses Online* : This project is the start of a searchable national database for student graduation theses,categorised according to scientific/scholarly discipline. Text Enriched in Virtual Communities* : This allows documents to be easily enriched and revised withannotations. Truth or DARE/ Utrecht Law Review* : The Utrecht Law Review was set up so as to encourage legalscholars to use the repository for digital publications. Dynamic pages for staff have also been developedand the copyright problem investigated. VetPortal* : VetPortal personalises veterinary medicine with a portal to and for the user and relevantveterinary information.The periodical Vaderlandsche Letteroefeningen and Women Writers: This project displays research onliterary history, supported by databases and annotation tools.

Promise of Science

Cream of Science was followed by another collection, Promise of Science, otherwise referred to as the NationalDissertation Site.The site makes it easy to find and consult tens of thousands of dissertations by Dutch PhDs.Some 2500 dissertations are produced in the Netherlands each year, about 5% of the annual scientific/scholarlyoutput. Dissertations are an institution's visiting card, with scientists and scholars - most of them young -presenting the most recent ideas in their discipline and providing detailed information.In line with the National Dissertation Site, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK havecollaborated on a project demonstrating that it is possible to link local collections of dissertations with oneanother on an international scale. DAREnet en DRIVER

Het succes van DAREnet was de inspiratiebron voor een Europees netwerk van repositories: (DigitalDRIVERRepository Infrastructure Vision for European Research).  Dit is een Europees project in het FP7 traject van deEuropese Commissie, waar SURFfoundation een belangrijke rol in speelt. In januari 2004 is DAREnet gelanceerd als demonstratiemodel van het netwerk van repositories in Nederland.Dit vormde de centrale ingang voor de lokale verzamelingen digitale bestanden van alle Nederlandseuniversiteiten en enkele gerelateerde instellingen, met een uniforme wijze van presenteren. Hiermee wasDAREnet uniek in de wereld: nergens anders was het toen mogelijk om zo eenvoudig toegang te hebben tot denationale wetenschappelijke onderzoeksoutput in digitale vorm. DAREnet bleek zeer bruikbaar in het tonen vanhet nut van repositories voor wereldwijde toegang maar ook voor duurzame opslag. SURFfoundation heeft toengewerkt aan een meer stabiele en permanente versie van DAREnet.Aan het eind van het DAREprogramma (eind 2006) is het beheer van DAREnet overgedragen aan de KNAW;SURFfoundation concentreert zich op de verdere innovatie van deze infrastructuur.

Met ingang van juni 2008 is DAREnet opgenomen in , de wetenschapsportal van de KNAW. NARCIS isNARCISontwikkeld als project van de KNAW en NWO in het kader van het DARE programma en daarna verderontwikkeld door de KNAW.NARCIS biedt naast toegang tot de repositories ook de mogelijkheid om te zoeken naar informatie overonderzoekers, onderzoeksorganisaties en lopend (en recent afgesloten) onderzoek van alle universiteiten enonderzoeksinstituten in Nederland. De duizenden datasets uit het Electronisch Archiverings Systeem (EASY)van DANS zijn ook via NARCIS te doorzoeken. DARE Tender projecten

Om de aanlevering van wetenschappelijk onderzoeksmateriaal voor de repositories op gang te brengen èn tehouden, zijn in het kader van DARE calls for tender uitgeschreven. Hiermee zijn projecten uitgevoerd diewetenschappers diensten of voordelen leveren die direct ten goede komen aan hun werk. De aanlevering vanhun onderzoeksresultaten aan de repository van hun instelling is belangrijk en dient dan ook aantrekkelijk engemakkelijk gemaakt te worden.

Er zijn 23 projecten uitgevoerd:

Distibuted Africana Repositories Community (DARC-2) Agricultural Repository News Exchange verzorgtattenderingen op onderzoeksresultaten in de landbouw. *   * ; Connecting-Africa is eenConnecting-Africapilot dienst voor Afrika Studies in Nederland en het resultaat van het DARE project. De dienst bevatgegevens van Afrikanisten verbonden aan een groot aantal verschillende universitaire organisaties inNederland en hun publicatiegegevens. Het biedt toegang, via de repository van Leiden, tot de digitaleversies van publicaties van het Afrika-Studiecentrum.

  * (Data Archiving River Environment LUXemburg)is een belangrijke stap op weg naar deDARELUXduurzame opslag van wetenschappelijke data in de bèta hoek.

  * (Dutch ARchive for Library and INformation sciences) biedt toegang tot NederlandseDARLINpublicaties op het gebied van de Bibliotheek- en Informatiewetenschap. Hieraan gekoppeld is hetDARLIN journal; een open access multimedia journal met materiaal dat nog niet eerder ergensbeschikbaar is gemaakt.

  * (Data Onderwijskundig Nederland Online Research) is bedoeld om bestanden met gegevensDONORover onderwijs - de onderwijsdatabestanden - die in onderzoek zijn of worden geproduceerd, onlinetoegankelijk te maken.

e-Depot Nederlandse Archeologie (eDNA)* bevat een selectie van de digitale onderzoeksgegevens vanNederlandse archeologen.

HBO-Kennisbank * De HBO Kennisbank maakt de producten van de hogescholen eenvoudig te vindenen gemakkelijk toegankelijk. Het kapitaal aan kennis van studenten, docenten en lectoren van dehogescholen in Nederland wordt in de HBO Kennisbank digitaal beschikbaar gesteld aangeïnteresseerden van over de hele wereld.

  * ; is de centrale verzamelplaats van onderzoeksinformatie uit Nederland. In deze portal zijn (fullNARCIStext) publicaties en informatie over onderzoeksactiviteiten, wetenschappelijke instituten, onderzoekers endatasets gelijktijd doorzoekbaar.

  * ; Met PROMAS efficiënt, duurzaam en professioneel profileren van wetenschappers enPROMASinstituten richting alle stakeholders.

  * ; een website die onderzoekers op het gebied van scholing enSCHOLAR(s) Economic Communityarbeidseconomie bijeen brengt.

  * ; Dit project is de start van een nationale database van afstudeerscripties, ingedeeldScripties Onlinenaar wetenschappelijke discipline en voorzien van een zoekfaciliteit.

  * ; maakt het mogelijk om documenten te verrijken met annotaties.Tekstverrijking in Virtual CommunitiesHiermee kan een tekst in een virtual community soepel en gebruikersvriendelijk worden verrijkt engereviseerd.

  * ; om wetenschappers in het juridisch domein te stimuleren om deTruth or DARE / Utrecht Law Reviewrepository te gaan gebruiken voor digitale publicaties is de Utrecht Law Review opgezet, zijn dynamischemedewerkerspagina's ontwikkeld en is de copyrightproblematiek in kaart gebracht.

  * ; met VetPortal is Diergeneeskunde persoonlijk te maken; een portal naar, voor de gebruiker,VetPortalrelevante informatie van diergeneeskunde.

   * toont literair historisch onderzoek ondersteund door databases enDe VLO en de Schrijvende Vrouwannotatietools.

Keur der Wetenschap

Keur der Wetenschap

Om de invoer van inhoud in de repositories te stimuleren is in 2005 het project Keur der Wetenschap gestart.

Met eenvoudige toegang tot de publicatielijsten van ruim 200 vooraanstaande Nederlandse wetenschapperswilde DAREnet aandacht op zich vestigen en het belang van repositories voor de open toegang van onderzoekaantonen. Het resultaat van dit project was een nationale internetetalage met meer dan 50.000 publicaties vanruim 200 Nederlandse top-wetenschappers.Keur der Wetenschap was een hoogtepunt uit het DARE-programma. Het wist aandacht voor open toegang vanonderzoeksresultaten met behulp van repositories te genereren. Er zijn zo'n 25.000 full text-bestandentoegevoegd aan de reeds beschikbare wetenschappelijke onderzoeksresultaten in de Nederlandse repositoriesen het project heeft model gestaan voor enkele soortgelijke projecten in het buitenland. Een ander belangrijkresultaat is dat geconstateerd is dat van publicaties vóór 1998 de auteursrechten op de digitale versie bij deauteur berusten en niet bij de uitgever. Deze documenten kunnen zonder problemen in de repositories wordenopgenomen.

Nationale Proefschriftensite

Na Keur der Wetenschap is nog een andere deelverzameling geïntroduceerd: Promise of Science, ofwel de Nationale Proefschriftensite

. Deze site biedt een eenvoudige manier om meer dan tienduizenden proefschriften van promovendi inNederland te vinden en te raadplegen.

Per jaar verschijnen in er in Nederland zo'n 2.500 proefschriften; ongeveer vijf procent van de jaarlijksewetenschappelijke output. Proefschriften zijn het visitekaartje van een instelling. Hierin wordt meestal door nogjonge wetenschappers de meest recente visie op een vakgebied gepresenteerd, ondersteund doorgedetailleerde gegevens.

In navolging van de door Nederlandse Proefschriftensite hebben Denemarken, Duitsland, Nederland, Zwedenen het Verenigd Koninkrijk samengewerkt in een demonstratieproject waarin is aangetoond dat het mogelijk islokale verzamelingen van proefschriften op internationale schaal aan elkaar te koppelen.
