MLK Day Greetings,

Leonard Pitts, the nationally syndicated columnist, is offering free copies of Michelle Alexander's path

breaking book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.

All you have to do is write him and promise to read it. For details check out his column which will

probably appear tomorrow in Greensboro's paper but here's the link to the Seattle Times, where it

Tomorrow at Greensboro's MLK parade, a short leaflet will be distributed calling on people to help

shape a local movement to oppose the Spring opening of Greensboro's new 1032 bed jail which

intends to warehouse mostly the children and grandchildren of the Civil Rights Movement era, where

that movement was put on the map.

Several friends are in Detroit this weekend for the national meeting of the October 22nd Coalition to

Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation. They will return to join with

as many a possible here to help spearhead this movement to oppose the new jail and racially targeted

mass incarceration.

I need help distributing 2000 leaflets which will call attention to The New Jim Crow and call for people

to get involved. Here's the text on one side and the other side encourages people to watch a re run of

the C Span video of an incredible dialogue between Cornell West and Carl Dix: " I n t he A ge o f

Obama.. .Pol ice Terror , No J obs, Mis-educat ion: What Future for Our Youth?"

Jim Crow laws, a new 1032 bed jail is about to open. Since 1960, the U.S.prison population has increased by 8 times where

2.4 million are now incarcerated (the US has the highest incarceration rate inthe world) and the number of African American

prisoners has gone from 90,000 in 1960 to 900,000 in 2012. A tenfoldincrease while the population has only doubled.

Another 360,000 immigrants are passing through detention centers on theirway to being deported. Part of BJ Barnes "plan" is to

use the "old" jail as a detention center for immigrants.Two Blocks from the new jail John Edwards' trial will begin on Thursday. He

is accused of "misappropriating" (stealing) many thousandsof dollars. He has the best legal team money can buy. There's a very slim

chance he might get convicted but if he does, he probably canbring his tennis racket to the "jail" he will serve time in. Compare this to the

large number of inmates in the Guilford County Jail who cannot

At last week's demonstration at the jail, Reverend Shuford (whose church is in aGreensboro housing project) brought up something interesting points. Among them:Guilford County is already planning the next new jail in around ten years. This
