October 2011. End of the holidays and the summer, back to school, countdown to the next vacation, the first ferrero rochers and the return of the 3rd edition of
Festival Materiais Diversos to shake up re-established routines and schedules.
We are proud to note that in its two previous editions FMD presented 37 performances, including 7
international and 6 national premieres, with a total of 45 creators in the areas of dance, theatre
and music. It has filled performance venues to 85% capacity, attracted national and international
programmers, secured the involvement of the local community and made a solid contribution to the economy of the municipality of Alcanena. In consequence, the
festival featured prominently in the regional and national press.
Thanks to the exceptional collaboration of the people and associations of Alcanena and, in
particular, the Alcanena Municipality and the Ministry of Culture/Directorate General for the Arts, Alcanena
has been recognised for its role in promoting a festival that situates itself at the intersection of local multiplicities and transnational adventures.
Even so, we have been affected by the economic and financial situation the country faces: we have made
structural adjustments to our organisation, the programme of the festival and the projects we have
developed. The 2011 edition of the festival is more compact and more focused on the artists, their work,
their choices (film screenings) and their words (5 o’clock tea).
Martim Pedroso dives into Raul Brandão’s universe in a piece of sharp social criticism; François
Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea (two of the most promising French choreographers) address the world of phantoms and their diverse materialisations; Marlene
Freitas continues her repetitive and trance-like choreographic research; Isabel Minhós Martins,
Bernardo Carvalho and Suzana Branco delight the young and old with an interactively illustrated history of the theatre; Miguel Pereira opens the memory trunk
of the local population; Elizabete Francisca and Teresa Silva debut a new duet
after a very successful experience last year; Lula Pena plays a magnificent concert in Minde and
choreographer Filipa Francisco reinvents relationships between the men and women of a folklore group.
FMD has made a few other dates, in addition to the “on stage” programme: rectangular table discussions with programmers and artists, chats with the artists over tea at 5 o’clock sharp and late nights energised by
our DJs.
October 2011: we continue to make FMD a cry at the top of the mountain!

Festival Materiais Diversos returns to Alcanena for another edition. It continues to affirm its position as a solid reference in the cultural
geography of our region.
It is a festival that presents itself to various audiences in the month of October but that is built, throughout the year, with the people of this
territory, adding a cultural element to the region’s development potential. It is a young and creative
festival, like its promoter – Associação Materiais Diversos.
The Municipality of Alcanena partners with this event because it believes and trusts
in its capacity to involve and mobilise with culture… for culture.

XVIII e coreográfica no séc.
Sylphs are immaterial beings that wander between the worlds of the living and the dead, the phantasmic and the real. The focus of much attention in 18th century literature and 19th century choreography, the figure of the sylph is, even today, a key and an enigma. In addressing the materiality of the body, life after death and our relation to the dead, the figure of the sylph interrogates some of the axes of western
thought: dualism, linear time, rationalism... Between funeral rite and celebration
of birth, SYLPHIDES is an attempt to stage reincarnation. With the aid of a device that allows
us to keep vital functions at a minimum, we intend to reach a new understanding of our bodies
and their possibilities.
A VIAGEM (“The Journey”) is a project developed by choreographer and performer Filipa Francisco with a folk dance group from Riachos (Torres Novas) and
contemporary dancers. This piece builds bridges between worlds that do not often cross or come into
dialogue and offers the audience new ways to enjoy culture, whether it be art or heritage. The
piece brings local artists of so-called popular culture together with artists
associated with contemporary art to promote the exchange of knowledge and practices in a context
of mutual enrichment and the maintenance and reformulation of traditions in modern society.

An invitation to all, young and old, to learn about the history of theatre. This performance
was written by Isabel Minhós Martins, real time, with illustrations by Bernardo Carvalho (Planeta Tangerina) and performed by Suzana Branco.
“We don’t know (but want to know) who built the first theatres.
We don’t know (but want to know) who was on the first stages.
We don’t know (but would really like to know) what they said, why they did it, if they were
applauded or booed. We also don’t know who was on this side, sitting or
standing (we don’t know), what they were doing there, if they liked what they saw and heard, if they paid
for their tickets or if they returned.”
Chamei-a Guintche.
This piece derives from a figure I drew based on the memory of a concert. I named him Guintche. Since then he has grown, taken on a life of his own, rebelled.
Drawing creates figures whose destiny is emancipation. No longer the prosthesis of a
thought, Guintche has become a dance. The repetitive and circular movement of the music makes him spin
progressively out of himself; as he twirls, the body contracts, transforms, is disfigured. The initial
rhythm expands until it almost takes over the whole piece, imposing its heterogeneity, determining
successive changes of direction. The line that is drawn between one body and the other
is discontinuous; it is a way out of the body, the path of intensity.

Following an invitation from Materiais Diversos to develop a project about amateur performers, I worked with some of the actors from Minde’s theatre troupe,
Boca de Cena, over a period of two months. During this time we explored the crossovers between their personal lives and what they considered to be the
most important roles they had ever played. Focusing on one particular case and the way in which a person
can reveal herself through a character, I hope to recreate an unexpected connection between reality and
fiction.
A mim chamaram-me apatia. A ela chamaram-lhe obediência. Às vezes monotonia. Às vezes melancolia, outras ainda, tradição. À fantasia chamaram-lhe disparate. À poesia chamaram-lhe desvio e ao peso maturidade. Ao caos chamaram-lhe regra e à instabilidade organização. Ao sonho chamaram-lhe luxo e ao desejo pequenez. À acção chamaram-lhe espera e ao tempo desistência.(Ao poder chamaram-lhe tudo.) Uns chamaram os deuses. Outros chamaram-lhes nomes.
Suspiro (“sigh”) (masculine noun)1. A breath cut short, as from sorrow, pain or passion. 2. A sweet and melancholy sound. 3. A lamentation, moan. 4. An indication of intense desire. 5. A very light sweet, made with small amounts of meringue.
They called me apathy. They called her obedience. Sometimes monotony. Sometimes melancholy, other times, tradition. They called fantasy nonsense.
They called poetry diversion and weight maturity. They called chaos rules and instability organisation.
They called dreams luxury and desire small-mindedness. They called action waiting
and time giving up.(They called power everything.)
Some called the gods. Others called them names. Now we want to change the world of the world, and we
do not call it pretension. We call it lucidity (or good old audacity).

Lula Pena plays fado without an f, calling herself – with no orthographical complexes, with confidence – a phadista.
Her first and only CD, released in 1998, is entitled precisely “Phados.” Living immersed
in this singular relationship with sound, history, memory and with the particular way in which we carry with us everything we have seen, observed
and learned, Lula is not only one of the great reinventors of fado music, but someone
who truly lives it. She takes it to the ports of the Mediterranean, towards French
when she needs more material to speak of love with, to Brazil and Central America when the
rhythm dictates, with a word in English if necessary.
The performance revisits the literary universe of Raul Brandão while highlighting the biographical nature of his work. Profoundly influenced by the
revolutionary spirit of Dostoevsky and by romantic symbolism, Brandão was a passionate, mystical,
religious man of anarchist temperament, who made social criticism and commentary the main purpose of
his writing. A PHILOSOPHIA DO GABIRU (“The Philosophy of Gabiru”), inspired by the dramatic poem
“Os Pobres”, aims to explore the dreams, anxieties and philosophical freedoms of this son of the
Republic, who documented like no other this moment of deep economic, political, moral and social crisis in Portugal. The figure of Gabiru - a kind of natural
philosopher - is, above all, the projection of a man who always wanted to be bigger than he was.

Galante, Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz, Vera Mantero & PEPCC, Maria Ramos, Mariana T. Barros e Rui Lopes Graça.
ELIZABETE FRANCISCA studied Industrial Design at ESAD (Caldas da Rainha). Highlights in the visual arts and design field include Experimenta o Campo (EXOC), Castaside The Law e 3o ANDAR DTO Bruce Willis. After a few months at Escola Superior da Dança, she began the Choreographic Research and Creation Programme at Forum Dança in 2009, where she worked with Vera Mantero, Meg Stuart, Miguel Pereira, Francisco Camacho, Deborah Hay, Mark Tompkins, among others. As a performer she has worked with Ana Borralho & João Galante, Mariana T. Barros and Rita Natálio. Her own work includes the solo PORQUE QUANDO SE TORNA UM NÓ JÁ DEIXOU DE SER UM LAÇO and LEVA A MÃO QUE EU LEVO O BRAÇO with Teresa Silva.
TERESA SILVA begins her studies at the Conservatório Nacional and completes her degree at Escola Superior da Dança and the Choreographic Research and Creation Programme at Forum Dança in 2009. In this programme, she trains with Deborah Hay, Meg Stuart, Vera Mantero, Loïc Touzé, Fran-cisco Camacho, Jeremy Nelson, João Fiadeiro, among others. As a performer, she has worked with Tânia Carvalho, Ana Borralho & João Galante, Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz, Vera Mantero & PEPCC, Maria Ramos, Mariana T. Barros and Rui Lopes Graça. She has choreographed OCOOO, A VIDA ENORME/LA VIE EN OR, LEVA A MÃO QUE EU LEVO O BRAÇO and an adaptation of Deborah Hay’s CONQUEST.
LULA PENA grew up far from the television, with her father’s radio as a constant presence. As a child, each time she picked up the guitar to play a song she only vaguely remembered was a unique opportunity to make it her own. She played on the streets, she left for Brussels where she played in bares and jazz clubs. She played in Germany, France, Italy, Holland and for King Mohammed V in Morocco. Today she approaches the stage very differently than with the tremor of the beginning of her career.

The Rectangular Table brings together different angles and points of view on a ‘Time’ with inevitable consequences for the activities
conceived, supported and carried out by cultural agents in Portugal.
Festival Materiais Diversos provides the setting for a conversation about strategies that might
allow artists and programmers to achieve their core objectives without jeopardizing the continuity of
artistic projects. How can we maintain a programme grounded in
quality with drastic cuts to production budgets? How can we encourage artistic creativity in the
face of reduced investment in more complex or riskier projects? We seek creative responses for
the new paradigm this ‘Time’ demands.

Today’s unused spaces have shed their past obligations. They are an opportunity to test new
artistic conceptsand, produce new social and cultural meanings.
Our open call for site specific projects recognises the value of local and industrial heritage while promoting public participation and awareness of
disruptive and unconventional ‘stages’. With this project, we want to start with a local emptiness and reach an artistic expression, through the reinvention
and creative occupation of select locations in the municipality of Alcanena.
Send your ideas to [email protected]
before October 24th.
