OUR TEACHERS ARE CALLED TO SERVEDeciding how and where to educate our children is among the most important, life-impacting decisions that we make as parents. The people with whom we partner to nurture and train our children are vitally important, as is the perspective through which the children are educated. At Westminster Catawba Christian School, we recognize that our teachers are the backbone of the school. Their commitment to serve the Lord is a high calling. Every day we have the honor and privilege to invest in children, not just academically, but also through teaching eternal values and fostering spiritual growth. WCCS strives to create a program that celebrates the unique talents and gifts of each and every student. Our classroom environment is one of encouragement, love, and nurturing that in turn produces learning marked by joy, energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm.

Learning Through a BiBLicaL Lens

Lower schooLBiblical truth is woven into every subject area of the curriculum. For example, elementary art students learn that as the creator of the universe, God has a love for beauty, design and creativity. Because students are made in His image, they have God-given creative abilities and self expression through art.

upper schooLThe Middle and High Schools build on the foundation of the Lower School by helping students understand God’s created world through Math and Science. English and History help students understand the nature of man and God’s story of redemption. Electives define what it means to be made in God’s image and develop the God-given abilities of each student.

CURRICULUM

INDIVIDUALIZED ASSESSMENT

Westminster Catawba Christian School approaches every area of life from a Biblical worldview, and nowhere is this more critically foundational than in the design of the curriculum. Students receive a comprehensive education which includes Biblical studies at every grade level along with science, math, language arts, social studies, and enrichments in art, music, foreign language, physical education, and library. Reading and math are at the core of PreK and elementary school academics, and middle and high school students have the opportunity to select from a number of honors and advanced placement classes.

We recognize that God has created each child with unique strengths and abilities and that learning takes place in a variety of ways. The EXCEL program helps determine students’ unique learning paths and assists them in developing to their fullest potentials. Services such as SEEK, Search & Teach, Resource Intervention, Tutorial Study Hall, and NILD Therapy, meet the additional needs of students with learning disabilities and students who exhibit gifted and talented performance. EXCEL assists these students in developing good workmanship qualities as well as a commitment to life-long learning. Photo taken by student Lane Christopher, ’14

BUILDING A FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE LEARNINGAt Westminster Catawba Christian School, even the youngest children are nurtured in a safe environment where they are prepared spiritually, as well as academically. Opportunities for learning go beyond paper and pencil tasks to incorporate application in real-life situations.

A young student asked his mother, preparing for the birth of her second child, if she was afraid. She paused a moment and then admitted that yes, she was a bit afraid. Remembering a verse he had memorized in class, her son encouraged her to “be strong and courageous,” (Joshua 1:9).

In another scenario, a fifth grade student learned of the extreme need in a depressed area of Rock Hill and worked with her parents to organize a donation drive. The elementary students worked together and provided several truckloads of supplies to the needy residents. They prayed for the residents and became the hands and feet of Jesus sharing His love with others.

Examples like these are seen often in PreK education and elementary programs at Westminster Catawba Christian School. Our faculty and staff are highly trained and qualified and desire to partner with parents to lay the foundation for future learning within a Biblical worldview. Students learn and practice skills vital to success in the 21st century, emphasizing critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. While developing a love of learning, students receive individualized instruction designed to meet their developmental needs at each stage of growth.

LOWER SCHOOLStudents on the lower school campus are working toward becoming critical thinkers and problem solvers. The curriculum in each subject area is enriched with hands-on learning activities. Core subjects include: language arts, math, social studies, science and Bible. Students are also able to enjoy art, music, physical education, computer, and library. In PreK and Kindergarten students are introduced to Spanish. In1st - 5th grades, students are given the choice between Spanish, French, German and Mandarin Chinese through the use of interactive software. Biblical teaching is integrated into every subject area, and with a target class size of eighteen or less, teachers pray for and truly know each individual child. This allows for a safe, loving atmosphere that honors Christ.

READING

MATH

Phonics-based instruction is a vital component in teaching reading skills and developing successful readers. This strong phonics base is supplemented with multiple strategies, such as context clues, structural analysis, word families, and sight words. To encourage an early love of reading, students read a variety of quality literature at their reading levels. Readers’ Workshop strategies help students develop tools that increase comprehension and interaction with texts.

The elementary math program is rooted in Primary Mathematics/Singapore Math, which integrates mental math, number sense, and fact fluency. A variety of hands-on learning techniques requires students to understand both “how” and “why” math works. Students develop mathematical understanding of concepts progressing from concrete to pictorial and finally abstract thinking. They utilize model drawing (a problem solving strategy) to visualize and construct concrete pictures allowing them to understand and solve word problems. With an emphasis on depth over breadth, students learn to be problem solvers and deep mathematical thinkers.

MIDDLE SCHOOL IS A TIME OF TRANSITIONIn middle school, we recognize that students are in a unique time of transition from their elementary years to high school and adolescence. We continue to offer a rigorous academic program with daily learning from the Bible and other core subjects from a Christ-centered perspective. In addition, special emphasis is placed on developing the whole child with a focus on personal responsibility, Biblical integrity, developing social and interpersonal skills as well as the study skills needed to excel in high school and beyond. Curriculum is also designed to assist students in exploring extracurricular interests and talents.

Our middle school teachers are highly trained, qualified and dedicated to serving the intellectual and spiritual needs of middle school students. Small class sizes allow for individualized attention and affirmation, encouragement and intellectual stimulation. It is our goal for middle school to be a time for students to thrive in a nurturing community of teachers who care deeply for the individual success of each child.

LATIN & WORLD LANGUAGESIn order to further develop vocabulary and language skills, middle school students take Latin 6th grade through 8th grade. As a continuation from the lower school foreign language offerings, a variety of languages are offered as electives through interactive software.

Teachers are on hand to individually guide students in developing organizational and study skills, time management and problem solving skills. Subject areas include physical education and health, computer skills, study hall and Latin.

Students have a variety of fine arts and other electives to choose from in their course selections. These include chorus, broadway musicals, middle school sports, beginning theater, beginning band and art.

STIMULATING INSTRUCTION & CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES IN HIGH SCHOOLAt WCCS, high school students are challenged with a level of academic rigor that prepares them for the unique demands of the 21st century in a college prep setting. Students are taught to think critically, communicate clearly, work collaboratively, and reflect creatively. The development of the whole person – spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, and physical – is the recognized goal and is realized through the academic, leadership, athletic, service, and fine arts programs and activities offered at WCCS.

What distinguishes WCCS is the foundational development of a Biblical worldview. Christian education is much more than including a Bible class in the curriculum, and holding Chapel once a week. Developing a Biblical worldview means that an emphasis is placed on integrating Biblical thought into every one of the programs and activities of the school so that students begin to naturally absorb God’s Truth into patterns of thought and actions. We strive to create life-changing, engaging educational experiences for students. It is our hope that this will enable them to thrive as they pursue their callings both now and in the future.

Upper School students at WCCS score consistently higher than state and national averages for the SAT, ACT and AP exams.

LIFE BEYOND GRADUATIONBeginning as early as 3K, our faculty and staff are committed to helping our students discover God’s purpose for their lives, and to equip them with the tools they need to excel in life beyond graduation. When students arrive on the upper campus, our college and career counselor begins working closely with them, getting to know their unique talents, academic gifts and interests in an effort to match them with the college or university that best fits the direction they feel God is leading them. In some cases, this has even meant a specific call to serve on the mission field after graduation, service in the military, business entrepreneurship or work in a specific trade. WCCS strives to help each student identify their individual calling and celebrates with them the unique direction God has on their lives.

Along with college and career counseling, faculty and staff are dedicated to mentoring students from a Biblical perspective, offering daily guidance on the issues they are encountering in an increasingly secular world. Teachers have a passion to invest in a student’s life far beyond graduation. Impacting a student’s eternity is at the heart of every teacher.

The college acceptance rate for the Class of 2014 was 100%. Check out our High School Profile for a complete listing of last year’s college acceptances.

INSTILLING A PASSION AND DESIRE TO SERVE“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve…” Mark 10:45

At WCCS, it is our desire to help students develop a Biblical worldview and experience a closer walk with Jesus Christ through serving others, both in the local community and around the world. Students as young as 3K are given service opportunities throughout the year and high school students must complete a total of 60 service hours during their high school career in order to graduate.

HOW WE SERVE AT WCCSLower schooL

Service projects have included making bracelets to send to children in Haiti, collecting canned goods and non-perishable items for a local food bank and organizing a coat drive. For example, kindergarteners collect pennies throughout the year by doing chores in their homes and use that money to purchase items at the Dollar Store for kids at the Children’s Attention Home in Rock Hill.

upper schooL

Middle and high school students participate in the WCCS Service Initiative each year, working in and around the Rock Hill community on clean up, painting and landscaping projects. They also serve the Children’s Attention Home, assisting with various building, decorating and cleaning needs. Students have also traveled to the Dominican Republic and various other locations on international missions.

ROLLING IN ROCK HILLSince 2011, WCCS student and faculty volunteers have participated in Rolling in Rock Hill in the month of September. This team completely preps and paints the exterior of a local home in the Rock Hill community.

HELP THE HUNGRY5th graders led a campus-wide mission project over the course of the school year in which they encouraged other WCCS students, PreK through 5th grade, to collect and bring in canned goods and other non-perishable food items for various aid organizations in the Rock Hill community. Renew Our Community, A Place for Hope, Pilgrim’s Inn and the Westminster Presbyterian Church Care Center received donations as a result of the hard work and heart-felt compassion of students and families who contributed to the project.

SOLE HOPEWCCS Bible students collected over 500 pairs of jeans and 200 milk jugs to help children halfway around the world through the mission organization, Sole Hope. Students on both the Upper and Lower Schools used the materials to cut shoes. The organization then delivered them to Uganda, Africa where they hire native women whom they have trained to sew the materials into actual shoes. This provides jobs and learned skills for these women. Once made, shoes are then delivered to African children in need.
