The church including galleries has seating for 1000. The church is built on an early Christian site. A number of carved symbol stones found close to the site have been inserted into the east wall on the exterior, below the Tiffany window, and a mediaeval church is known to have been located here too.

It continued to be used as the local hospital until 1963. In 1965, it was purchased by Aberdeenshire Guides at a cost of £2000. County Commissioner Mrs Alison Catto set about fundraising to convert the building to a holiday home for local Brownies and Guides.

It was opened on the 10th June 1967 by Lord and Lady Forbes-Leith and the first visitors were Maud Brownies. Since then hundreds of girls and leaders have had fun at Fyvie. Designed by John Marr of Carinbrogie, and built by mason Alex Wallace and wright, Thomas Smith of Oldmeldrum in 1832, this Category B listed circular building was constructed to keep corpses safe from the infamous ‘body-snatchers’ before burial, who were quite common throughout Scotland in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Mort House is cylindrical, built from granite ashlar with a conical slated roof. It still has the original stout oak door and protective metal shutter and keyhole. The Mort House also contains the original oak revolving coffin platform.

Udny Historical Society will be on hand to show you inside the Mort House and to give a short tour of the Udny Churchyard, which in itself is Category C listed and contains a number of interesting early 18th and 19th Century gravestones.

The B listed church was designed by architect James Matthews in 1858 at the commission of Major Ramsay, Laird of Straloch. The building was originally built as both a church and as an estate school. A board school was later built in 1876, since which time, All Saint’s has been used only as a church.

Major Ramsay’s daughter, Mrs Irvine of Drum and Straloch commissioned the 11 stained glass windows and reredos designed by Sir Ninian Comper between 1896 and 1916 installed in the church. Comper was one of the last Scottish Gothic Revival architects, noted for his churches and their furnishings, in particular, stained glass windows. There will be an exhibition on the stained glass windows by Sir Ninian Comper and members of the church will be on hand throughout the day to talk about the building and its contents.

Described by architectural historians as possibly the finest sepulchral monument in Aberdeenshire, the Category A listed mausoleum was built for the first female laird of Castle Fraser by James Byres of Tonley in the Roman New-Classical

style in 1808. The standard of construction is superb although internally water ingress has damaged the memorials. Visitors will be able to view the interior from the entrance, which includes putti (stone angels), as well as the family memorials as the sandstone memorials are in such a delicate condition.

Recently acquired by the Friends of Elyza Fraser, a representative of the group will be on hand to talk about the mausoleum. This is a rare opportunity to see inside as the mausoleum is usually locked. There will be a display relating to architect James Byres of Tonley and Miss Elyza Fraser.

…Cluny churchyard itself is Category A listed and contains four mort safes (contraptions designed to protect graves from disturbance by grave robbers) and an unusual terracotta Early Italian Renaissance monument to James Reid and his wife Marie Claudine Nardon (circa 1897).
