STATE AND REGIONAL HEREFORD FEMALE SHOW CLASSIFICATIONS

1. Cow-calf (Any female older than the below ages with a calf at side.) o Calf older than 270 days of age on the show date is not eligible to show in cow-calf class. o If the cow is horned and the calf polled, then the pair shows in the horned cow-calf class, and if the cow is polled and the calf is horned, then the pair shows in the polled cow-calf class. o Calf is eligible for individual classes but must be entered in the appropriate class.

BULL CLASS BREAKS

ELIGIBILITY

1. Exhibitors must be current TJPHA or TJHA member

2. Participants must have reached their 3rd birthday by January 1, 2019.

3. Participants must not have reached their 22nd birthday by January 1, 2019.

4. No participant will be discriminated against due to a physical, emotional or mental handicap. The only request is to specify on the entry form and communicate needed accommodations in advance. Approval will not be given based solely on the age of the exhibitor.

5. The name and member code listed on the entry form as exhibitor must also be listed on the animal's registration certificate as "owner.”

6. The exhibitor listed on the entry will need to be the exhibitor for the show and showmanship. Siblings will not be allowed to substitute showing or showmanship participation.

STEER SHOW

1. Steers must have been born after January 1, 2017 and be registered with the American Hereford Association. The registration paper must state Steer and be issued in the name of the exhibitor. No steer certificates will be accepted, only registration papers. Steers may be no greater than 47” at the hip.

3. Steer classes will be divided by weight. Classes will be determined after check in. We will select a Grand Champion Prospect Steer and a Grand Champion Market Steer for Pre-Jr & Junior Shows.

4. All general rules will apply to the steer show i.e. ownership, participant age, fitting, etc.

MINI HEREFORD RULES

HEIFER SHOW

1. Heifers must have been born after May 31, 2017, and prior to May 15, 2019, and be registered with the American Hereford Association. The registration certificate must be issued in the name of the exhibitor.

2. Owned heifers are defined as entries in which the registration certificate is issued solely in the name of the junior exhibitor before May 15, 2019.. No animal is eligible to compete if recorded in joint ownership, farm name or family name, is not allowed doing so will result in false entry rendering it ineligible.

5. All general rules will apply to the bull show i.e. ownership, participant age, fitting, etc.

OBJECTIVE The primary objective of the Hereford Bowl is to provide opportunity for TJHA and TJPHA members to demonstrate their knowledge of Hereford beef cattle. The Hereford Bowl competition will allow contestants to demonstrate good sportsmanship and it is hoped that this contest will provide an educational experience for both participants and spectators.

RULES - Each team can have one team per age division, or if a single team does not have four members to compete as a team those team members may combine with another team association to form a team. As long as a team has not already been formed from either team. o Each team will consist of four members. o All contestants must be members of the TJHA and/or TJPHA. o The senior division will consist of junior members who are 15 years of age and older as of January 1. The junior division will consist of junior members who are 7-14 years old. Any junior may play as a senior, but no senior may play as a junior. I. Procedures - There will be two officials who will determine the accuracy of the answers. - Members of the TJHA and TJPHA board will help with scoring, moderating, and overseeing the contest. II. Preliminary competition - The preliminary round will consist of a 50-question written test. - All team members must take the written test. - The eight teams with the highest combined team scores will compete in the semi- final quiz bowl round. Teams will be ranked, with the highest ranked team playing the lowest ranked team, and so on. III. Quiz bowl round - The first match will consist of one 10 question round. Any member may answer any question. - The second match will consist of two rounds. One 12- question round where anyone can answer a question, and then a second eight- question match- up round (where only the first member of each team can answer the first question, the second question answered the second person in each team and so on.) - The third and final match will consist of two rounds. There will be one 12- question round where any member can answer, one 12- question round for one- on- one competition, and one final jeopardy round where the teams will risk “x” points, confer on the question, and give one written team answer within 30 seconds. - Contestants will have 10 seconds to answer each question in the first and second rounds. - Each match will have the same questions for all competing teams. - In case of a tie, a batch of three questions that can be answered by any member of the team. - If a team answers incorrectly, the other team may answer to receive full credit. - Each question is worth 1 point, except the final jeopardy round, during which the amount of points risked will be decided by the individual teams

OBJECTIVE The main objective of Individual Sales is to give juniors a glimpse at a real-life situation of selling while promoting the importance of communication skills, marketing technique and an understanding of performance and pedigree information.

RULES - Contestants must be members of both the TJHA and/or TJPHA - Individuals will compete in their corresponding age divisions: senior, intermediate, junior and peewee. - Individuals must register online using the electronic sign-up form by the contest sign-up deadline. - Presentations will be from 3-6 minutes long. The objective of each individual will be to convince the judges that they should purchase their entry. - Individuals may present any item that is related to agriculture, i.e.: an animal, semen, embryo packages, etc. - Participants will be discounted for using notes. - The order of presentations will be determined by the advisor and will be announced prior to contest. - Animals are not allowed in this contest; however, participants may use visual aids such as I-pads, tablets, binder with information pertaining to the item being sold, etc. - No posters, dry erase boards, etc. may be used during the presentation. - Senior and Intermediate contestants will be required to incorporate some form of graphic design and computer technology to design marketing materials that will supplement their presentation in the sale of their agricultural product. This may include flyers, brochures, ads, etc. Scoring for Junior and Peewee Contestants: Points will be awarded as follows: - Knowledge -25 points - Ability to communicate -25 points - Organization -25 points - Overall effect -25 points (Salesmanship, Creativity/ Originality, Believability)

Scoring for Senior and Intermediate Contestants: Points will be awarded as follows: - Knowledge -20 points - Ability to communicate -20 points - Organization -20 points - Overall effect -20 points (Salesmanship, Creativity/ Originality, Believability) - Creative Design-20 points Ten points will be subtracted from the total if judges detect the use of notes. Two points will be subtracted for each minute a presentation goes more than six minutes. Judging will be by a three- member panel of judges based on 100 points maximum from each judge. Each judge will then rank the individuals based on points allocated.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the Illustrated Speech Contest is to encourage public speaking and leadership abilities in youth, to develop character and leadership in Hereford youth and promote interest in the beef industry and project Herefords in a positive image.

RULES 1. The speech topic should be related to the beef industry. 2. Contestant must be a member of the TJHA and/or TJPHA 3. Contestants in the senior division must be 18-21 years of age on Jan. 1. Contestants in the intermediate division must be 14-17 years of age on Jan. 1. Contestants in the junior division must be 10- 13 years of age on Jan. 1. 4. Length – 6 to 8 minutes for senior division; 3 to 5 minutes for junior and intermediate divisions. No points will be deducted for speech lengths of 5 minutes 30 seconds to 8 minutes 30 seconds in the Senior Division and 2 minutes 30 seconds to 5 minutes 30 seconds in the intermediate and junior divisions. After that, each 30- second period over or under will result in a 10- point deduction. 7. Each contestant shall provide the title and primary objective of his/ her speech at the time of entry deadline. (Example title: “Purebred Cattle in Today’s Economy.” Objective: To discuss the impact of today’s economic factors on purebred cattle operations.) 8. The speech must be presented orally. 9. A minimum of one illustration or visual aid must be prepared and used. Types of illustrations contestants are encouraged to use are charts, diagrams, props, inanimate models, puppets, posters, etc. The use of electronic devices will not be accepted, which means no slides; videos or electronic presentations are allowed. 10. An additional three to four minutes will be allowed following the oral presentation to answer questions, which may be asked by the judges. 11. The primary objective of the speech must be clearly related to the designated theme of the contest. 12. Contestants will not be allowed in the presentation room prior to their speeches.

Qualification procedures: 1. Speeches will be entered and given at the team level in contests sponsored by the state women's organization, Hereford Association or Junior Hereford Association. 2. Each state is eligible to certify one senior division winner, one intermediate division winner, and one junior division winner to compete at the national level.

OBJECTIVE The main objective of the Team Fitting contest is to encourage team participation for the preparation of an animal for the showring.

RULES - All contestants must be members of the TJHA and/or TJPHA -Teams will consist of three members. o One Peewee (7-9 years of age as of January1) o One junior (10-14 years old as of January 1) o One senior (15-21 years old as of January 1) - Team members may be substituted accordingly: a peewee may substitute for a junior or senior, or a junior may substitute for a senior. Seniors may not substitute for another age division. - Each team must provide its own animal for the contest. All supplies needed (grooming chute, blower, clippers, adhesive, etc.) must be provided by the team. - Each animal will be fogged with water by a contest official before the contest begins. - Each team will be allowed 45 minutes to fit their animal. - Teams who are missing a maximum of one junior member to complete a team may ask another junior (who is the age that is needed to complete their team) to serve in that capacity. - When time is up, one team member will parade their animal before the judge(s). The judge(s) will make comments and announce the winners.

OBJECTIVE The main objective of the Judging Contest is to help youth learn how to evaluate cattle

RULES

1. Any individual in attendance at the TJHA/TJPHA Hereford State Show is eligible to participate. 2. Contestants will compete in four divisions: peewee, junior, intermediate, senior, and adult.

a. Peewee – Up to 9 years of age as of January 1st b. Junior – 10-13 years of age as of January 1st c. Intermediate – 14-17 years of age as of January 1st d. Senior – 18-21 years of age as of January 1st e. Open – 22 years of age and older as of January 1st (Non- THA or TPHA Members)

3. Team score will be calculated by taking the scores from each member of the team per age division.

4. Any contestant believed to be receiving assistance during the competition will be disqualified. 5. Awards will go to top individuals and winning teams in each division.
