Oz The Great And PowerfulWords by Sophie Leahy

While many would have been wary to touch a beloved classic of its stature, director Sam Raimi has done just that with his latest film, Oz The Great And Powerful (2013). The film opens in the familiar black and white landscape of Kansas. A young illusionist, Oscar Diggs, known as Oz, finds himself in some trouble and has to make a quick escape. Jumping into a hot air balloon, he flies directly into a twister, landing in a foreign, intensely colourful world that is definitely not Kansas. He soon meets Theodora, a young witch who believes him to be the prophesied Wizard of Oz, sent to save the kingdom from the wicked witch.

Oz is thrust into the politics of this other world, where good and evil are difficult to distinguish. While trying to navigate the kingdom and uncover the true identity of the wicked witch, Oz must also come to terms with

himself. The Wizard is selfish, egotistical and largely unlikeable. He uses people to get his way, while never really sure of where he is going. But the more he learns about the balance of good and evil, the more he aspires to greatness, wondering if he can truly be the Wizard of Oz.

Director Sam Raimi has made sure to honour the spirit of the original feature film in many respects. The production design and the garish saturation of colours all ring true to the classic film, both celebrating the mystical artificiality of the land of Oz. The somewhat dark and intense storyline is offset by this lush, visual spectacle onscreen, proving to be a delight for the eyes. The animation blends with live action seamlessly. Real and fake, all of the characters are equally spectacular. Both great and powerful, Oz The Great And Powerful is available on board now.

There are few films that can match the 1939 masterpiece, The Wizard Of Oz. The iconic yellow brick road, Judy Garland’s red sparkly shoes, the manic cackle of the Wicked Witch of the West; this is an

ironclad Hollywood classic, packed with unmistakable images, quotes and music.

Recommended Album Of The Month

Foals – Holy FireWords by Sophie Leahy

Foals have made a point of defying expectations during their time in the spotlight. Their sound is one that can truly be described as innovative and unique, intelligent and arty Brit Rock. They made their mark with deceivingly simple guitar riffs, humming bass lines and angular beats, yet their debut album, 2008’s Antidotes, strangely left off their biggest early single ‘Hummer’. Cryptic lyrics appealed to the left-of-centre crowds, while their joyful energy found a mark with the masses. Their second album, Total Life Forever (2010) was a strong follow up, serving up a collection of danceable indie rock.

But with this, their third album, Foals deliver exactly what is expected: a big sound, a big production, and an album worthy of its name. Holy Fire (2013) confirms their status as festival headliners, with big bursts of energy scattered throughout. Beginning with the aptly-named

track ‘Prelude’, it slowly builds, layer upon layer, until bursting into the scattering riffs of ‘Inhaler’. Lead singer Yannis Philippakis brings an urgency to the track, calling out over the booming chords and steady beats.

From there, the mood lightens with their most mainstream work yet – single ‘My Number’. This is the lightest, brightest, catchiest track on the album and also one of the best. The album moves on, from the chaotic noise in ‘Providence’, the drama of ‘Out Of The Woods’ and the U2-esque chorus of ‘Bad Habit.’ This is a mature, gritty, yet easy collection. It is an album to be pumped through the speakers, a record that demands to be heard. Galloping drums, rolling bass, punchy riffs and Philippakis’ rounded voice require volume.

With Holy Fire, Foals have crafted a smouldering, smoking-hot and, yes, big record. What you expect is what you receive.

Despite being taught not to judge a book by its cover, it is human nature to form an opinion upon just hearing a name or seeing an image. So when British indie rockers Foals release an album with a title like Holy Fire, it’s natural for listeners to expect something sprawling and big.
