INFERRING PRACTICE: What can you infer based on the information available to you?
“’You say you didn’t know it was due today?’ my teacher asked me with tears in her eyes…”
“ I don’t believe it”
Chapter 3: Paragraph 1• I infer that the author is actually saying that people are
really excited about this huge pearl. I also infer that news is traveling quickly about Kino finding the Pearl of the World.
• Why am I inferring this?
Questions?
INFERRING: SOME PRACTICE
• Predicting is taking what you know (or think you know) and making an educated guess about what will happen later in the text.
• Unlike inferences, we can tell if almost always find out if our predictions are correct or not…

INFERENCE PREDICTIONI infer that the author is actually saying that people are really excited about this huge pearl. I also infer that news is traveling quickly about Kino finding the Pearl of the World.
Because I infer that everyone is finding out about this pearl and are getting excited about it, I predict that all the towns people are going to come to see Kino because they will want to see the pearl.
QUESTIONS?
• Reading between the lines and putting together what is said to figure out what is unsaid.
