THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all people for all time. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Note from Pastor: I know I join all of you in prayer for the families who lost children and loved ones in the horrific school shooting in Florida last week. I am especially praying for parents who have to navigate the worries and questions that follow from an event like this. The shooting has many different levels to consider. The political level is an important one and it gets most of the ink and volume in the media. Let’s pray that men and women of good will on all political sides of this issue will be able to talk and reason together for the common good. Certainly there is the spiritual issue as well. Last Sunday on the first Sunday of Lent, St. Mark told us that Jesus went in to the desert to be tempted by the devil. The devil is real and he will wreak whatever havoc, destruction, and alienation he can. That is not cause for us to panic or despair. It’s cause for us to draw closer to Christ in prayer, in obedience to his commandments, and in service with a sacrificial heart. For we know that the evil one is impotent when countered with the grace of Jesus Christ. We also have to deal with the sociological level. God bless moms and dads who spend time guiding their children, modelling respectful behavior, and instilling in their kids a sense of self-worth, as well as social responsibility. Your job is hard, moms and dads! And there is no guarantee that children raised even in the best homes will grow up to live a mature and responsible life… but there’s no doubt that the chances of a good tree growing increase tremendously when seeds are lovingly and intentionally planted and cared for. May God bless our families, our schools, our nation, our educators, and our children. May this Lent be a time of much needed renewal for all of us! --Fr. Andy

Quiz Question Answer: D) To covet means to desire what is not yours. David desired Bathsheba, which led him to steal Uriah’s wife, commit adultery with her, lie about it, and eventually kill Uriah to try to cover up the sin.
