Allofwhichispartofthe(IMarEST)loggedcontinuousprofessionaldevelopment(CPD)trainingprogramforindividualsseekingtoregisterasprofessionalMarineTechnicians,orgainCharteredEngineer(C.Eng)orindeedMarinetoSubseaTechnologiststatus.

Module 1focusesonprovidingcandidateswithaknowledgeofplanningandsafeoperationsassociatedwithLightWellInterventionsandmaintainingsubseawells/assetintegrity,inlifecycleofoperations.Adurationof4 days(32hours)ofrecognisedloggedtrainingforthosewishingtopursueregisteredsubseaprofessionalengineerorchartered(subsea)engineerstatusultimatelycharteredengineer(C.Eng),marineorsubseatechnologistviatheSocietyofUnderwatertechnology(SUT)andtheaffiliatedlicensingagreementwithIMarEST.

Assessment:Eachcoursemodulehasspecificcompetencyassessmentmeasureswhichleadtoanexaminationonthefinaldayofthecourse.

A deepwater Gulf of Mexico operator began Gas Lift Valve Change Out operations with the intent to optimise production in a producing well. The operation encountered access issues while attempting to run through the downhole safety valve.

boreconditionshavebeenachievedbysimplyshuttingthewellinandinjectinggastodisplacingtheoilcolumnbelowtheflapperofthesubsurfacesafetyvalve.Withnoindicationatthesurfacethereareanysafetyvalveproblemsbutdownholetoolsstackingoutinthevalve,theoperatorwaskeptguessingonhowbesttoaddresstheproblem.ThisVideooftheMonthcasestoryillustrateshowbeingproactiveanddeployingEV’sMemoryHDdownholecameraresultsinknowingthenextbeststeptocontendwiththeissue.Thecamerarecordstheactionoftheflowtubemovementashydraulicpressureisapplied,pushingitdownwarduntilitfinallymakescontactwiththeflapper.

Oncethecontactismade,theflapperisseenbecomingslightlymisaligned,possiblyduetoabrokenorbenthingeassembly,anditcannotopentoallowwellboreaccess.Inresponse,theCustomerchosetorectifytheproblembyrunninganexplosiveknockouttooldesignedtoshattertheflapperintopiecessmallenoughtofalldownholeandtherebyremovetheobstruction.

Thecustomerdecidedtoverifythecompleteremovaloftheflapperinapostinspectioncamerarun.Inthenextrun,wecanclearlyseethattheexplosiveprojectilewasfiredsuccessfully,however,itdidnotcompletelyshattertheflapperashoped,butinstead,shotaholethroughthemiddlesection,leavingremnantsaroundtheoutsideedgesthatcouldcauseproblemswithsubsequentrunsEV’sVideodataenabledthedecisiontobemadequicklytocontinuetoproducethewell,andreturninthefuturewithcoiledtubing,tomillouttheremainingflapperremnants.Additionally,EV’sIntegratedVideoCalipertoolcanberanafterthemill-outiscompletedtoinspecttheconditionofthedownholesafetyvalveanditsprofiletoassessanydamagepossiblycausedbythemillingoperation.
