Overview

The UK government has made changed to the Air Passenger Duty (APD) (Tax code GB);

namely passengers up to and including the age of 15 are now exempted from this tax when

travelling in the lowest cabin (economy).

APD is chargeable at departure time from airports in the UK and collected at time of payment

for ticket issue and reflected on the e-ticket itself.

This latest exception (announced by the UK Government in their autumn statement in late

2014) applies to passengers aged between 12 and 15 travelling in the economy cabin only for

journeys commencing after the 1st March 2016.

For this age range (12-15), a phased approach amongst the industry was agreed. The first part

of this approach was to seek a short term solution that each GDS took it upon themselves to

implement as quickly as possible.

For Amadeus this involves applying a passenger type code and passenger age (e.g. Bnn where

nn is equal to the traveller’s age e.g. B13 for a 13 year old) as part of a pricing entry to exempt

the APD where applicable. This process was communicated to the market in March 2015.

Discussions are still on-going at industry level as to how best tackle this type of tax variation

Passenger Type Codes

When an age is included as part of an Amadeus pricing entry it is possible to exempt APD for

passengers under the age of 16.

An age can be added to a booking, or applied in a pricing entry using any Passenger Type

Code (PTC) which accept age in the input. Passenger Type Codes describe the type of passen-

ger in the booking and ensure that pricing is appropriate to the PTC used.

It is possible to incorporate these codes either into names fields, pricing entries or a combina-

tion of the two (See pricing example formats used in the examples on pages 6-25)

The following PTCs permit for the inclusion of an age:

Ann, Bnn, Cnn, Dnn, Enn, Fnn, Gnn, Inn, Jnn, Lnn, Mnn, Pnn, Snn, Tnn, Unn, Vnn, Ynn

(Where nn equals the passengers age e.g. B13 for a 13 year old)

Note: many of the PTCs listed on the previous page such as the likes of Ann (Age restricted

companion) or Snn (Restricted senior citizen) for example may not be relevant to your require-

ments so please choose appropriately.

Other Airport Departure Tax Discounts

Other countries may also apply discounts to airport taxes for pre-determined age groups or

passenger types.

To ensure that only APD is exempted the recommendation is where possible, to use the Bnn

passenger type code (e.g. B12, B13, B14 or B15). This will exclude only APD on applicable itin-

eraries for young travellers in the 12-15 year old age group.

For Inclusive Tour fares the suggested passenger type code for this age group for a pricing en-

try is IIT-Bnn (e.g. IIT-B13 where the passenger is 13 years old)

If an airline recommends you to use a passenger type code other than Bnn please check the re-

sulting Transitional Stored Ticket (TST) to ensure that any tax discounts other than APD are ap-

plied correctly.

Examples

The focus of this guide is cryptic pricing entries, which can be used in either Amadeus Selling

Platform or Selling Platform Connect command pages.

In addition, the examples contained in this document are intended for guidance purposes only

and are not an exhaustive list of all itinerary pricing entries.

Fare Discount (FD) (Multi Passenger Types: 2 Adult, 1 Young

Person & 1 Child) Fare discount elements (FD) allow you to store fare discount information applicable to all, or specific pas-

sengers and segments of the PNR. By storing fare discounts, the system can automatically price at the

correct discount, without the need to include a discount code in pricing entries.
