China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group Co., a Chinese state-owned nuclear power company, interested in acquiring a stake in one of the world’s largest uranium projects, has made a £756m offer for a takeover of Kalahari Minerals Plc.

With oil prices surging, China has been scrambling to secure alternative, and increasingly scarce, sources of energy. Husab, the world’s fifth-largest known primary uranium deposit in Namibia, is owned by Australian Explorer Extract Resources. With Kalahari owning 43% of Extract, taking over Kalahari would mean acquiring a stake in Husab – a very

tempting deal for a number of major powers looking at investing in alternative energy.

China Guangdong’s offer for Kalahari is 17% above the average price of the target’s shares in the 20 trading days before the announcement.

If completed, the move would constitute one of the largest investments made by China in a London- company and the latest of a series of deals in which Chinese groups have acquired strategic mineral concessions in Africa.

this hot new tab, consumers are seeing a lot of value in Apple’s video-conferencing feature.

The bigger screen offered by the 9.7-inch iPad 2 is much easier to hold than its predecessor, thanks to tapered sides, thinner design, and lighter weight (the original iPad tipped the scales at 1.5 pounds, while iPad2 is significantly lighter at 1.3 pounds). The Motorola Xoom, at 1.6 pounds, looks obese in comparison.

A fantastic mix of compact luxury and fuel economy seems to be making its way into the auto motive market, with the Lexus CT 200h, the Infiniti M hybrid (M35H) and Green Automotive’s Zotye SUV all coming out around the same time.

The CT 200h, Lexus’s first compact luxury hybrid carwith a base price of $30,000 and an estimated promised fuel efficiency of 42 miles per gallon, is a hatchback-style with an electric motor drive.

definite edge over its competitors, the AUDI A3 2.0T and BMW 1 series 120i coupe, where combined fuel economy is concerned.

The Infiniti M35H on the other hand, flagged off on March 16, 2011, is priced much higher at $53,700 and promises to deliver a fuel efficiency of 32 mpg.

Clearly, what these luxury car makers seem to have in mind is creating environmentally responsible consumers, without stressing their budget for fuel.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has announced that U.S. railroads are planning to spend a record $12 billion on capital improvements this year, outdoing their 2010 record of $10.7 billion.

While the BNSF Railway in the west has announced a capital budget of $3.5 billion this year, the Union Pacific Railroad has announced an estimated investment of $3.2 billion in plant and equipment spending.

Another $3.74 billion investment plans have been made public by the two large Eastern carriers – CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway – put together, while Kansas City Southern in the nation’s heartland, the smallest of the Class Is, has not given a specific number.

Add to this, the two large Canadian carriers – Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways – which have said that they expect to spend about $2.8 billion combined on 2011 capital needs, of which industry sources project that at least $750 million will go into their U.S. units.

Finally, the peel gets acknowledged instead of being tossed aside!

Gustavo Castro and his colleagues from Instituto de Biociencias de Botucatu, Brazil, have developed a water purification system based on banana peels, with no other complex filters or other electronics involved. The researchers have found that minced banana peel could quickly remove lead and copper from river water as well as, or better than, many other materials.

To add to the surprisingly inventive uses for banana peels – which include polishing silverware, leather shoes, and the leaves of house plants – purification of drinking water contaminated with potentially toxic metals is the latest on the list.

The report identifying minced banana peel as a better performer than an array of other purification materials appears in ACS’s journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research.

The Danish toymaker’s brilliance of introducing movie-themed box sets including Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones has paid off, with Lego witnessing a galactic 63 per cent increase in their profits last year.

The booming popularity of these themed sets pushed Lego’s profits up to £563m, on revenues up by 32 per cent to £1.8bn, the company said in a statement. Sales in the UK alone shot up by 48 per cent over the year as a whole, and by 57 per cent

The company now commands roughly 5.9 per cent of the global toy market, catapulting it to fourth place in the world league, Lego said.

“The result is extremely satisfactory and is due in part to vigorous growth in markets such as the US, UK, Russia and Eastern Europe – all identified as growth markets for the company,” the company’s chief executive, Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, said.

Aurora Diamante, the world's most expensive pen, contains over 30 carats of diamonds, and has been created by Aurora, the oldest and most prestigious fountain pen manufacturer in Italy.

An exquisite diamond cabochon - a polished, not faceted, gem - crowns the pen, which is further decorated with almost two thousand DeBeers-certified “4 C” gems on a solid platinum barrel. Even the nib is precious, being fashioned from 18kt gold.

So exclusive is this pen that only one will be produced per year.

With Aurora Pens claiming the Diamante to be the only over 30-carat pen in the world, making it one of the most expensive ones ever, this shiny beauty is priced at over €1 million ($1.3 million).

A similar series, limited to only ten pieces and accomplished in white gold, may also be contended for by the world's elite. The two different versions are said to represent the brightness of dawn and the charm of nightfall - a celebration of the first and last rays of the day. Roof Garden of Mumbai's Cybertecture Egg

This maximum city, second only to Hong Kong in being the densest place in the world is currently a global symbol of all things stated above.

Well, Cybertecture Egg, a 32,000 sq m awe-inspiring commercial building project, commissioned by Vijay Associate (Wadhwa Developers) and developed by James Law Cybertecture and Ove Arup, is all set to redefine the 21st century urban commercial building in India.

The future of CybertectureJames Law’s intention while designing the Cybertecture Egg, was to bring together iconic architecture, environmental design, intelligent control systems, and evolutionary engineering towards creating this innovative building for the city of Mumbai and for India in the 21st Century.

Why integrate these specific features you ask?

With 33,000 square meters of office space stacked in 13 stories with highly intelligent building management systems, the building boasts 3 levels of basement providing 400 car parking spaces.

Green Design FeaturesThe Cybertecture Egg, because of its form, occupies 10% to 20% lower area than a conventional building this size would.

Incorporating passive solar design to decrease heat gain and lower energy loads, this oblong office building also boasts an elevated garden that performs thermolysis and moderates temperatures by using natural vegetation that helps with cooling the building envelope.

Solar photovoltaic panels and rooftop wind turbines facilitate on-site generation of electricity, while a greywater recycling system that harvests water for landscaping

Because, according to James Law “In the 21st Century, buildings will not be created by just concrete, steel and glass as in the 20th Century but with the intangible materials of technology, multimedia, intelligence and interactivity. This enlightment gives rise to a new form of architecture – Cybertecture.”

According to James Law, the Cybertecture Egg has been conceptualized and designed as a sustainable ecosystem derived from the concept of “Cybertecture”.

Through its design itself, the building aspires to give its inhabitants both a dynamic physical world as well as access to virtual spaces of the connected world.

Located in Mumbai’s new commercial business district, the Bandra Kurla Complex, the Cybertecture Egg, imagined as a microcosm of the earth, has been envisioned as a beacon and nucleus for this high profile business area.

Cybertecture EggAn intelligent, interactive buildingWhile all the above characteristics are great to have in a building, it is these interactive-intelligent features that really set the Cybertecture Egg apart from all the other avante-garde construction projects coming up in India.

While the Cybertecture Egg’s intelligence systems work in tandem with the building’s design to give the inhabitants the ‘best space to work in’, there is also a comprehensive series of systems throughout the building, such as the ‘cybertecture health’ in the washrooms, that monitor the health of the inhabitants. Designed to keep track of the inhabitants’ health including their blood pressure and weight, these innovative systems allow the collected data to be retrieved and also provide for this to be sent to a doctor if required.

As if this isnt impressive enough, the Cybertecture Egg also allows the building’s inhabitants to “customize” their reality through the use of ‘cybertecture reality’ ; this allows a customization of one’s favorite view. So you could choose to have real time scenery all around your working world if you wanted!

While Vivid Girls, Sunny Leone and Monique Alexander, got Vivid Vodka the attention the company was hoping to gather, the new vodka itself has positioned itself as very niche drink, getting awarded a score of 90 from the Beverage Testing Institute.

Vivid Vodka was introduced at the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas earlier this month by White Star Marketing, with Sunny Leone and Monique Alexander signing autographs, taking photos and explaining details about the premium Vivid Vodka to convention attendees.

White Star Marketing has licensed the name Vivid to be used in association with vodka and other spirits.

The Premium DrinkVivid Vodka, made using 5-times distilled wheat grain harvested from America’s Great Plains, promises to virtually the cleanest and smoothest drink available in its raw form.

Along with the best grain alcohol, Vivid is also very careful with respect to the water using for creating the ultra-premium vodka. To ensure highest quality at all levels, Vivid has found its own supreme source of water in the Cascade Mountain snow packs, one of the purest waters on the planet.

The premium Vodka is then specially filtered through 12,000 pounds of virgin coconut husks, the freshest, non-regenerated (never mainstream) carbon through a very methodical, generations-old distillation process that has proven unexcelled in removing impurities. The spirit is then further micro-filtered to smooth out the peaks and valleys, achieving a vodka of velvety character and crystal clarity that can only be called Vivid.

While it usually takes at least 2-3 times longer to create this perfect vodka that meets Vivid’s superior standards, the company believes that ultimately, it is a

process that is handcrafted at every step with each batch of VIVID Vodka made to match the specific taste requirements of our team and nothing less will do.

White Star MarketingWhite Star Marketing, LLC develops premium spirits brands for large-scale distribution throughout the United States and select foreign markets, with first, and flagship, offering being VIVID VODKA.

Led by a close and business-savvy group, White Star Marketing is well poised to make its presence known in the always-exciting, ever-

changing spirits and lifestyle marketplace by providing products that reflect sophistication and quality, attainable aspiration and one-of-a-kind experiences.

The company’s CEO, Carmine (Sam) Marasco, has founded, capitalized and operated over 30 independent companies with more than $500 million in capitalization in his career. He is a member of the California Bar and the Young Presidents Organization, as well as honored by the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships and Ernst & Young and USA Today as a finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year. AT&T’s $39 billion blockbuster takeover of T-Mobile marks the biggest global telecom deal since AT&T’s $89.4 billion buy of BellSouth in 2006.

The latest among a series of transformational deals for Morgan Stanley‘s telecom bankers, the AT&T / T-Mobile deal will mean a whooping $145 million fee for the advisors.

The deal came through after a formidable 15-member team, led by Adam Shepard, head of North American Telecom for Morgan Stanley, Jim Murray, head of Wireless Banking and Bob Eatroff, technology veteran, spent an entire year guiding Deutsche Telekom AG through a series of options for their T-Mobile USA unit, the other options under consideration being an IPO and a deal with Sprint.

Year's Biggest M&A DealAT&T’s takeover of T-Mobile deal for $39billion figures as the largest pure M&A transaction this year, second only to the $49billion worth of preferred shares conversion into common stock by the U.S. Treasury while restructuring took place for American International Group Inc.

The latest among a series of telecom-related m&a deals carried out by Morgan Stanley – Morgan Stanley having been Verizon Wireless’s sole adviser on its $28 billion takeover of Alltel in 2008, and also Clearwire’s adviser on its $15 billion joint venture with Sprint in 2008, this mega deal cements Morgan Stanley’s lead in the league table rankings of investment bankers.

As lead Deutsche Telekom advisers, Morgan Stanley were able to talk AT&T into

not only paying a hefty price for T-Mobile USA, whose profits have declined, but also accepting an unusually large break-up fee.

AT&T agreed to pay $3 billion and to give T-Mobile USA wireless airwaves if regulators reject the deal.

Goldman Sachs, which was advising Sprint, missed out on the year’s largest M&A deal, and while it retains its no. 4 spot in the worldwide league tables, it did miss out on some very meaty advisory fees.

T-Mobile, AT&T Advisors BenefitMarket estimates show that with advisor fees being inversely proportional to the size of the deal involved, fees in a deal

of this magnitude would be approximately 0.15% to 0.17% of the deal’s value for M&A advisers on the side that is buying, while being slightly lower at 0.14% to 0.16% for advisors on the selling-side.So what exactly does the AT&T – T-Mobile deal mean in terms of numbers for advisors on both sides ?

Estimates by Freeman & Co, a consultancy firm value total fees paid to AT&T’s advising banks, JPMorgan and two boutique firms, Greenhill and Evercore, at around $55 million to $65 million, to be split between the three.

Further, Freeman said that JPMorgan will also receive upfront arrangement fees in the range of $20 million for underwriting a $20 billion bridge loan to AT&T.

Freeman’s estimates also say that Deutsche Telekom AG’s advisors, Morgan

Stanley, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank, are likely to receive a total fee amounting to $50 million to $60 million.

Along with these hefty paychecks, being in on this mega-deal has also meant jumps in share values and higher ranks in the worldwide league tables for the involved banks.

Shares of boutique investment firms Evercore Partners Inc and Greenhill, which advised AT&T on the deal, jumped on Monday in anticipation of the lump sum fees.

While the deal reinforces Morgan Stanley’s lead position, JPMorgan Chase & Co – involved on AT&T’s side – jumped up from no. 3 to no. 2, trading places with Bank of America Corp for the better.

Further, while Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank rose in the tables to No. 5 and No. 8 respectively, the sharpest rise was for Greenhill & Co, which was previously not even in the top 25, and after this deal figures at No. 13. Evercore Partners rose three places to No. 7.

Population growth, labour mobility and demands for higher standards of living are widely recognized common factors across the world’s major developing countries, all of them reinforcing the need for more construction and better infrastructure in these emerging economies.

India, Asia's third-largest economy, and a heavyweight brick in the BRIC, expects to invest about $500 billion in infrastructure, mainly in power, telecommunication, roads, railways and oil pipelines, in the five years ending March 2012, according to reports released by the Indian Government’s Planning Commission.

This is supported by a Goldman Sachs report, which estimates that India will need to spend more than $1 trillion on infrastructure from 2010 to 2019, with roads requiring $427 billion, power $288 billion and railways $281 billion.

The picture-perfect Brand New World Under Construction, here we look at the highlights of the building and construction economy in India as the country experiences its extreme makeover.

Why Infrastructure? The Overhaul AheadThe United Nations (UN) estimates that over the next 15 years, each week 1 million people will migrate to cities in the world’s emerging economies. While these developing countries try to grapple with the pressures exerted by breakneck urbanization on their existing infrastructure, they find themselves in a race against time to build up their infrastructure, and hence achieve savings from reduced costs and faster production cycles.

India’s estimated investment of $1.5 trillion on infrastructure in the years leading up to 2017 to overhaul its creaking road, railway and power sectors – long recognized since as a liability for the country’s comprehensive growth – is a clear indication of the scale of infrastructure-related investment that should be expected from Asia's third-largest economy.

The 1500-km long DFC (Dedicated Freight Corridor), alongwith a 200-km zone on either side of this corridor that make up the DMIC (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor), together constitute the single most ambitious project integrating infrastructural-industrial development in India. While the DFC will allow rapid movement of goods, the DMIC will offer itself as a world-class manufacturing and trading hub.

A collaborative effort between the Government of India and the Japanese Government, this development, estimated at $100billion, when complete will boast a 4000 MW Power Plant, three new sea ports and six new airports in addition to also providing greatly enhanced connectivity with the existing ports.

Why a manufacturing hub? Because, as the CEO and managing director of the Delhi

Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC), Amitabh Kant believes, manufacturing creates jobs. And manufacturing alone can help India triple employment and double exports over a period of time.

The DMIC is a State-Sponsored Industrial Development Project aimed at developing an Industrial Zone and eco- cities spanning across six states in India. Envisioned as an economic area that will provide a globally competitive environment for industries within the manufacturing and services sectors, this integrated project hopes to double India’s employment potential, triple industrial output and quadruple exports from the region in five years. The total employment expected to be generated from this project is 3 million, and most of this will belong to the manufacturing/processing sectors.

A Brand New World Under Construction

GIFT CityThe most futuristic-looking development under-construction in India, the 500 acre Gujarat International Finance Tech-City, also known as the GIFT City is being built in the state of Gujarat.

Very obviously inspired in form by the spate of financial hubs coming up in China, the GIFT City is being developed with the primary purpose of attracting finance and tech firms from across the country.

The means to this end? The provision of high quality physical infrastructure (electricity, water, gas, district cooling, roads, telecoms and broadband), so tempting that the biggest finance and tech firms from Mumbai, Bangalore, Gurgaon etc. where infrastructure is either very bad or very expensive, relocate their offices to GIFT City.

The masterplan for the GIF City development will boast a special economic zone (SEZ), international education zone, integrated townships, an entertainment zone, hotels, a convention center, an international techno park, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) units, shopping malls, stock exchanges and service units.

The city will be developed and implemented by a joint-venture company called the "Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Limited" (GIFTCL), which

comprises the Gujarat Urban Development Company Limited (GUDCOL) - a body of the State Government of Gujarat - and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS).

With plans to construct a total floor space of 85,000,000 sq ft (7,900,000 m2),

Green Cities by the DozenGreen is In, and we all know it only too well.

India wants to prove they know it too, and also that they’re willing to do something about it.

In a new set of bilateral ties with Japan, India has announced plans of setting up 24 green cities between Delhi and Mumbai, in the proposed Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). These green cities will include optimised energy supplies, 24-hour drinking water supply, bicycle and walking tracks, and waste and water recycling systems.

"Green cities and green technologies will be an important part of the DMIC. It will be like forging a sort of green alliance

between India and Japan," said Seth.

Top Japanese companies like Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Toshiba are expected to be involved in designing and building eco-friendly towns along the DMIC that will pass through the states of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

"Basically, every place in this city will be in walking or cyclable distance, thereby cutting the need for pollution-spewing

public transportation systems," said Aftab Seth, a former Indian ambassador to Japan and a driving force behind the green initiative.

And if you’re thinking “hah, we’ll see when this comes to fruition”, well, a new type of green city, about one-fourth the size of Mumbai, is already in the throes of being executed in India’s west. Enter – Lavasa City.

Lavasa, India’s First Green Greenfield City

A prime example of the new gen builders of India demonstrating that providing environmentally-conscious quality living environments is absolutely on top of their minds, Lavasa is India’s first private planned city.

located in India’s west, in a picturesque valley along 60 kms. of lakefront, and is. Very strategically positioned, Lavasa lies a three hour drive from Mumbai and an hour’s drive from Pune.

With an award-winning design by HOK, USA, the total area of the current development plan for Lavasa is spread over 18,000 acres and has been conceptualized on the principles of New Urbanism that aim to provide the best balance of places to work, play and relax. By creating walkable spaces throughout the development, Lavasa brings together all the components essential to daily life in an organized manner.

This avant-garde city of Asia’s third-largest economy aims to operate on a 365-day economy with a conglomeration of global leaders in the fields of Hospitality, Health and Wellness, Education, Tourism already in the process of setting up their institutions at Lavasa.

The cost of constructing this Greenfield hill city is estimated at around $670million.

Boasting a series of firsts to its credit already - technology leadership, e-Governance, the first Indian city developed using Geographical Information System (GIS), use of Biomimicry as a science in town planning and use of innovative techniques like hydro seeding in environment management – Lavasa also promises a wide range of housingchoices, to fit

sustainable growth through a two-pronged strategy; protecting the existing natural habitat as it is and further enhancing the habitat through hydro-seeding, geo-matting, mass plantations and beautification of ravines.

The first of the five towns that comprise the Lavasa vision - ‘Dasve,' - is nearing completion. Dasve’s 2,000 hectares of construction include four hotels, a town centre, apartments and luxury villas and an adventure sports club, among other amenities.

Recognizing the Growth MantraSo what’s the moral of this “India Growth” story? That finally, the country’s public authorities as well as large private players seem to be recognizing the role of good infrastructure and quality living towards boosting overall growth.

There seems to be a distinct increase in understanding where the logical sequence of a country’s growth is concerned: good-quality, well networked infrastructure = more secondary & tertiary industrial growth = more employment = higher GDP.

Be it infrastructure corridors like the DFC and DMIC or the new spate of green cities being planned and executed, it’s a Brand New World Under Construction for sure!

Japan’s government has estimated the cost of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the nation's northeast at around $309 billion, making this the world’s costliest natural disaster on record.

The extensive damage to housing, roads, utilities and businesses across the seven states of Japan has resulted in losses of between 16 trillion yen ($198 billion) and 25 trillion yen ($309 billion), according to a Cabinet Office estimate Wednesday.

And magnifying the magnitude of this damage manifold is the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant.

Page 59: Industry Leaders Magazine April 2011 Issue

Figures released by Tokyo Electric Power indicate that it is the spent fuel rods that contain most of

the dangerous uranium at the power plant, not the reactor cores themselves...

World Business News

The latest among the "consequences" of the leaks in the nuclear reactors is the discovery by Japan's Nuclear Safety Agency that water near the Fukushima Daiichi plant's reactor 1 contains radioactive iodine at 3,355 times the legal limit.

And despite the eight-day half-life of iodine 131 implying that a large amount of the iodine will have deteriorated by the time the water reaches people, just the fact that Iodine 131 was held responsible for the high incidence of thyroid cancer among children exposed to fallout from

the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, is enough to have people getting frantically worried about what the consequences this time might be in real terms

This horror story about the consequences of nuclear reactors in Japan going off following the massively d e v a s t a t i n g earthquake and tsunami naturally has got everyone wondering “What really happened

with the reactors at Fukushima?”

Well, apparently, the havoc wrecked by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear reactors, while obviously having been caused by the over-heating of the fuel rods in the reactors due to water leaks, is also being attributed to a very large extent to the non-disposal of spent radioactive fuel rods, and the practice of storing these at the site of the nuclear plant itself.

How do Nuclear Reactors Work?In very simple terms, a nuclear reactor uses radioactive fuel rods made of zirconium and pellets of nuclear fuel such as uranium, which react with water contained in the core of the reactor to set off a controlled nuclear reaction.

The water in the reactor gets heated as a result of the above reaction, creating 550-degree Fahrenheit steam, which powers a turbine, generating electricity.

Spent Radioactive Fuel Rods at FukushimaTokyo Electric Power released figures around mid-march which indicate that it is the spent fuel rods that contain most of the dangerous uranium at the power plant, not the reactor cores themselves, adding that a total of 11,125 spent fuel rod assemblies were stored at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, which amounts to about four times as much radioactive material as the reactor cores combined.

In lieu of the danger this could pose during a possible calamity, many countries have taken measures to minimize the accumulation of spent fuel rods at nuclear power plants. For example, the western province of Gansu has a storage compound where spent rods from all over China are sent. In another example, Germany collects and stores these in costly super-tough casks.

Unfortunately for Japan, the indecisiveness in disposing off these spent rods, instead collecting them in temporary storage pools at the power plants, where they can be guarded with the same security provided for the plants themselves, has magnified the damage caused by the reactors manifold and is going to haunt Japanese authorities for a very long time to come.

Storage Pools of Spent RodsUnder normal conditions, the spent rods in the temporary pools are kept covered with 26 feet of continuously circulating water that prevents the water from getting to warm.

However, as pointed out by Robert Albrecht, an experienced nuclear engineer

61

Page 62: Industry Leaders Magazine April 2011 Issue

who worked as consultant to the Japanese nuclear reactor manufacturing industry in the 1980s, the extremely high levels of radiation above the storage pools suggest that water from the 39-foot-deep pools has started draining away quite rapidly, as a consequence of which, the 13-foot-high fuel rod assemblies have been exposed to air for hours and are starting to melt.

The temporary storage pools at the Fukushima site are now literally acting as the proverbial “fuel to fire”, with stored water in the pools having either boiled away or having leaked out of the assigned containments. And while spent rods are ordinarily not capable of generating as much heat as new ones do, reports have started coming in about some spent rods

workers at the Fukushima site

Making News Fuel to Fire

having begun to melt, releasing extremely high levels of radiation

Zirconium, once ignited, burns extremely hot and is difficult to extinguish, added Mr. Richard Lahey, a retired nuclear engineer who helped write a classified report for the United States government several years ago on the vulnerabilities of storage pools at American nuclear reactors.

The Real RiskWith reports of the spent rods having caught fire, speculation says that while the small amount of radioactive iodine, with a half-life of eight days would’ve mostly disappeared through radioactive decay once the rods left the reactor cores, the spent fuel rods are still loaded with cesium and strontium that can start to escape if the fuel rods burn.

Another important factor towards determining the seriousness of the situation would be whether the uranium oxide pellets in the rods stay vertical even if the cladding burns off. According

to Mr. Albrecht, pellets sometimes get fused together while in the reactor, and if they stay standing up, then even with the water and zirconium gone, nuclear fission will not take place.

Workers at the site had to release built-up gases to ease pressure inside the plant,

which released some radioactive material into the atmosphere. However, experts say that this isn’t enough to be dangerous to anyone outside the immediate vicinity of the plant.

The worst-case scenario is a full meltdown, in which radioactive material eats through the various protective barriers and reaches the outside. This, experts reckon, is unlikely as long as workers can pump seawater into the plant and so long as containment structures remain intact.

A valuable lesson learnt nonetheless. Better management and timely disposal of spent rods could’ve massively reduced the disaster being wrecked by Fukushima’s nuclear power station.

The global economic climate of the past year has affected many, yet they have remained consistent in their commitment to customer service and financial stability. This year they opened their Disaster Recovery Center in Spokane, Washington, where all global backup IT requirements are facilitated.

2009 was also a big year for their Environmental Teams worldwide as they work on green initiatives across the Company; a sustainable, green office was built in Frankfurt for their German Regional Headquarters.

Expeditors believe that they are much more than getting a piece of freight from one point to another. The entire environment breeds success, and one can notice that their people move faster, work harder and are better rewarded than other companies. Expeditors is a process driven organization that focuses on continual improvement. It's a simple philosophy that works.

Sustainability at ExpeditorsThe "three pillars" of sustainability are commonly cited as "people, planet, and profit". At Expeditors, the three pillars of sustainability closely mirror this original idea, with a focus on society as whole (social responsibility), the earth we live on (environmental stewardship), and the people who are the essence of their company (health & safety). The pursuit of

sustainable business practices is essential to achieving their mission of excellence in global logistics.

Every program has its inception, and their first steps were to start measuring their greenhouse gas emissions, to start gathering information on employee giving and volunteering, and to establish a health and safety program for their global network. The momentum of these three global teams has inspires to move forward with a broader program of sustainability.

CapabilitiesTo summarize, when choosing a provider of logistics services,

the client is buying the people, the systems and the culture of an organization. It should be trusted that these three critical elements work in harmony on a global basis. To reiterate, Expeditors take great pride in ensuring that their customers get the same level of consistent service

Years of experience have taught them that ground conditions are seldom ideal and that turnaround times are short. Maintenance materials are usually scarce, and pilots often need to return to base on severely damaged aircraft.

All Embraer defense aircrafts provide state-of-the-art electronics, reliability and high mission effectiveness. Kraft Foods, America's largest confectionery, food, and beverage corporation, is the second-largest food and beverage corporation headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois.

While Kraft markets its many brands in more than 155 countries, just 11 of its brands annually earn more than $1 billion worldwide: these include Kraft, Cadbury, Oscar Mayer, Maxwell House, Nabisco, Oreo, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Jacobs, Milka, LU, and Trident.

40 of its brands are at least 100 years old.

The Kraft JourneyThe Kraft Foods Company was first formed on December 10, 1923 by Thomas H. McInnerney to execute a rollup strategy in the then fragmented United States ice cream industry.

T h r o u g h acquisitions, it expanded into a full range of dairy products and by 1930, Kraft was the largest dairy company in the United States and the world, exceeding Borden.

Kraft's amazing growth story consists of a transition from McInnerney being told by one Wall Street banker that the dairy industry "lacked dignity", as reported by The Los Angeles Times in 1929, to Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers getting convinced to finance McInnerney's

proposed scheme of consolidating the United States ice cream industry, to Kraft Foods being what it is today - a multi-billion dollar force to be reckoned with

Last month, we looked at the most expensive cars in the world.

So you’ve got that fantabulous house with acres of backyard, an awesome Lamborghini sitting in your driveway, gadgets galore, what do you aspire for next?

A really awesome Yacht, you say? We concur.

Like a popular ad goes, “Free man, You will always love the Sea”.

Luxury yachts have since time immemorial had this incredibly high “I’ve arrived” quotient.

Page 118: Industry Leaders Magazine April 2011 Issue

www.industryleadersmagazine.com April 2011

So we asked our magic mirror, “which yachts are the most luxurious of them all?” Here goes a list of the 5 hottest machines that make the most of the ocean’s magic.

Revealed to the world on June 12th, 2009, the Eclipse is proudly owned by Romah Abramovich, a Russian businessman, the primary owner of the investment company Millhouse LLC, owner of the Chelsea Football Club, and according to the 2011 Forbes list, the 53rd richest person in the world worth a personal fortune of $13.4 billion.

As for his awesome set of sails, the Eclipse, at 528 feet (164 metres), is the world’s largest.

What else does the Eclipse offer ? You name it, they’ve got it. From hot tubbing to helicopter pads (of which the Eclipse has 2), from a disco hall to swimming pools (again, this luxury yacht has 2 of these), guest rooms (obviously) with 6-foot movie screens installed in each of these, 3 launch boats and even a mini submarine with a capability of submerging upto 50 meters.

Built by the world’s best-known yacht builders, German company Blohm + Voss, and operated by 70 crew members, defense and security have been very carefully considered while designing this

1. The

EclipsePrice: $1.2billion

uber-luxurious yacht. The Eclipse has an intruder detection system as well as a German-built missile defense system built in.

And you thought missile-systems built into yachts and cars only happened in Bond movies? Please!

As if that’s not good enough, the Eclipse is also reported as being

equipped with an “anti-paparazzi” shield.

The yacht has a stream of lasers sweeping the surroundings and when they detect a CCD, they fire a bolt of light right at the camera to wipe out any photographs that might’ve been taken.

And while these are believed to not be on all the time, they supposedly get activated when guards spot any paparazzi hanging around this highly ostentatious piece of machinery.

2. Dubai Price: $350 million

Nowhere close to the super awe-inspiring Eclipse, Dubai, is quite a feat in its own right. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai and the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, this luxury yacht is 524 ft and 10 inches (162 m) long. Formerly known as “Panhandle” and “Platinum”, this luxury yacht has also been built by Blohm + Voss, builders of the Eclipse.

Usually anchored at the artificial island “Logo Island“, immediately offshore from the Sheikh’s summer palace, and

to the right of Palm Island, the Dubai can be accessed by way of an exclusive navigational channel.

With interiors designed by Philippe Starck, the Dubai is run by 88 crew members, can host 115 guests, and has a large pool, a squash court, a helipad and also a small aircraft hanger: after all, the Dubai’s owner DOES rule the Emirate of Dubai, doesn’t he?

3. Lady Moura Price: $210 million

This superyacht, owned by Saudi Arabian businessman Nasser al-Rashid, was also built by Blohm + Voss, in 1990, much before the Eclipse.

Smaller of course than the Eclipse and Dubai, Lady Moura is operated by 60 crew members, and as its special feature, boasts a mock of beachfront complete with sand and palm. I wouldn’t say no to that…

As an added attraction, it also has a pool with retractable roof.

4. Rising Sun Price: $200 million

Originally purchased by Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corporation, and currently owned by David Geffen, the Rising Sun was designed by the late Jon Bannenberg and built by Germany’s Lürssen.

This 453 feet long luxury yacht boasts a total living space of 8 000 square meters, alongwith other modest (!) facilities like a huge indoor swimming pool, an extensive wine cellar, a cinema, a basketball court that doubles as a helicopter pad , suites for 16 guests, 82 rooms on five storeys and space for a private submarine

This mega yacht, featuring fifth on our list, is owned by Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft.

With 40 eager-to-serve crew members, this 416 foot sailing beauty also doubles up as a “garage” of 7 smallers boats, two helicopters and a 10 person submarine.

Built by the same guys who built the Rising Sun, Lürssen, the interiors for the Octopus were designed by Jonathan Quinn Barnett from Seattle.
