Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0The four stages of industrial development

The Internet of Things (IoT) is generally seen as the next stage of Internet development. Ultimately, this involves the direct communication of physical objects in the everyday milieu (e.g., household appliances, lamps, bicycles) or in the industrial production sector (e.g., machines, workpieces and products) with each other via Internet technology without the need for human intervention. Moreover, Internet-capable end devices and sensors such as smartphones or data glasses make humans a part of this network. In the industrial environment, one speaks of Industry 4.0, or the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Today, about 30 billion devices are expected to be connected to the Internet by 2020.

In Industry 4.0, production meshes with ultra-modern information and communication technology. The driving force of this development is the rapidly increasing digitalization of the economy and society. Digitalization is permanently changing the way future production and processing are carried out in Germany: After steam machines, production lines, electronics and IT, now intelligent factories (the "smart factories") shape the fourth Industrial Revolution.

Communication

Within the context of Industry 4.0, industrial production is increasingly associated with cutting-edge communication technology. This enables the economical combination of high piece counts, individual customer desires and high quality.

For applications in machine engineering and automation technology, high functional reliability and availability of the communication connections gain importance. Guaranteed latency times and stability of the connections, since they directly impact application performance, have a decisive significance.

Wieland Electric offers you numerous solutions for building industrial and VPN networks. You can select how your machines or end devices connect to the Internet securely and reliably. Our mobile radio routers offer you the latest LTE technology for maximum data throughput.

The following products are available to you for reliable, secure and fast communication:

• Ethernet switches

• VPN industrial routers

– Internet access via customer LAN

– Internet access via WLAN

– Internet access via mobile radio

• Heavy duty connectors for Ethernet cabling in the field

Machine safety control with Ethernet

• Connection to vertical communication via Ethernet

• ProfiNet, Modbus TCP, Ethernet IP, EtherCAT

• Remote access possible

By networking intelligent measurement technology in production, data that can be used together with automation solutions for self-optimization, self-configuration and self-diagnosis are available. With this approach, machine statuses can be recorded and monitored from anywhere in the world.

This accomplishes the prerequisites for proactive maintenance and repairs.

Diagnosing system statuses has long been the standard. Industry 4.0 adds a substantial demand for diagnostics. A great deal of the data from system statuses are collected and analyzed centrally. Relocating the data to the cloud is constantly gaining significance thereby. Before all else, the goal is to recognize critical system statuses or worn assemblies promptly. This provides the basis for deliberate maintenance actions or material-friendly allocation of production orders before such actions.

This also applies to the safety-relevant parts of the machine. Ethernet-based communication protocols in the central processor of our innovative safety control samos®pro compact facilitate transfer of the requisite machine data.

Reliable power supply

• Switching power supplies: Redundant parallel switching via redundancy module

• UPS module for uninterruptible power supply

• Consistent double power supply in the Ethernet switches

• Overvoltage protection to increase availability

Flexible production processes in In-dustry 4.0 systems require the highest machine accessibility and availability via the Internet. This is only possible with reliable power supply. Here, different concepts for DC supply can be employed. In the first approach, the devices to be supplied have two different supply possibilities (redun-dancy). In this scenario, supply is from two different power sources. In the second concept, two power supplies switched in parallel through one redundancy module ensure the highest power supply availability.

Pluggable energy and communication

To shape production processes for the high variability and flexibility implied by Industry 4.0, innovative installation solutions for main energy, auxiliary energy and communication are required.

With our system podis® or RST® you lay your flexible conductor rail in the field. Then all modular production units simply dock and draw their electrical energy.

For variable routing of sensor, actuator ad communication lines, Wieland Electric offers many pluggable solutions. Expand your modular heavy duty connector revos flex according to your needs and as needed, feed electrical signals and energy to your modules with one connector.

The saris® connector system, compliant with the M8/M12 standard, brings pluggable sensor and actuator connection to the production line.
