INTRODUCTIONChalmit Lighting, formerly known as Andrew Chalmers & Mitchell Ltd, was founded in 1910 to

manufacture and supply equipment for the large industrial market based on the River Clyde.

The company soon became a major supplier of lighting and electrical products to the marine

industry in the West of Scotland and thereafter throughout the whole country.

CERTIFICATION & APPROVALS

Since the 1970’s Chalmit has earned a reputation as the leading supplier of hazardous Area

luminaires worldwide. Having gained accreditation for Quality Assurance to BS5750 Part 1 in

1987, ISO 9001 in 1994, and more recently accreditation to ISO 9001:2000 in 2003, Chalmit’s

commitment to quality has never been more apparent. Chalmit products have approvals and

certification from a number of internationally recognised bodies including, EECS (BASEEFA),

SCS (SIRA), ERA, ITS, DNV, CEPEL (Brazil) and GOST (Russia), covering Explosion protected

classifications and I.P. ratings. Chalmit has recently gained accreditation for a number of

luminaires under the latest IEC Ex scheme.

INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT RANGEThe Chalmit Lighting industrial luminaire range is designed and constructed to the same high

quality as its hazardous area products. Performance and durability are paramount in the design

process and this is evident in the final product. All of the luminaires contained in this product

guide meet and in most cases exceed the relevant international standards.

Chalmit Lighting employs the latest design technology coupled with the most up to date

production methods to ensure the lowest ’whole life cost’ for our products.

The industrial range of luminaires is designed to complement the hazardous area product

range and is equally suitable for harsh environments having ingress protection ratings up to

IP66/67.

LIGHTING DESIGNChalmit Lighting have developed a user friendly lighting design programme, Chalmlite, which

is distributed free of charge to all potential users of Chalmit luminaires. Chalmlite is currently

used as the programme of choice by many of the leading E & C’s worldwide. Chalmit can also

offer expert lighting applications advice, in-house project design, informed guidance on the

safe installation and maintenance of luminaires and the full back up expected of a major

international brand.

This introduction outlines the design and use of luminaries for use in Industrial Applications. The informationgiven applies specifically to Chalmit luminaires and to the topic in general.Chalmit luminaires are designed and manufactured in accordance with good engineering practice and to wellestablished luminaire construction standards. The equipment must be selected, installed, maintained anddisposed of in accordance with any regulation or legislation appropriate to its use. Installation and Maintenanceleaflets are include with all luminaires and are available on request. These contain information essential to thesafe use of the equipment and must be read and understood by installers and users before putting equipmentinto service.

CE MARKINGAll Chalmit luminaires carry the CE Marking which indicates that they meet the requirements of the Low Voltageand EMC directives of the EU as transposed into UK law.

COMPLIANCE WITH GENERAL PRODUCT STANDARDSLuminaires are designed to comply with the luminaire construction standard EN 60598 (IEC 598).

Luminaires which comply with the individual product standard will have their internal components operatingwithin their rated performance when operated at the maximum rated ambient temperature. This contributes to thereliability and, ultimately, to the safety of the installation.

LAMPSLamps fall into two broad categories, incandescent lamps(such as GLS and tungsten halogen) and dischargelamps (such as High Pressure Sodium(HPS), Metal Halide(MBI), Mercury vapour(MBFU) and tubular fluorescent).Table 1 gives a summary of lamp characteristics and their application as applied to general usage.

* (1) Most fluorescent lamps have an economical life of 15000 hrs but some higher specification lamps are available which can run economically for up to 40000 hours or more.

* (2) HPS lamps are available which have two arc tubes in parallel inside the same envelope and are commonly known as twin arc lamps. They give 15% light output immediately after a brief supply interruption which extinguishes the lamp. They also give a longer service life.

LAMP STLAMP STANDARDISAANDARDISATIONTIONLamps and their associated control gear can be divided into two distinct sectors: IEC(European types) andANSI(American types). The general rule is that for optimum performance the lamps and their control gear shouldbe compatible i.e. both IEC types or both ANSI types. Where problems may arise is where an ANSI lamp is usedwith IEC control gear or vice versa. The installer should be aware that when the lamps and control gear are notcompatible there can be an adverse affect on the life and performance of both.Chalmit Lighting use IEC lamps and control gear as standard. If an ANSI lamp is to be used with a Chalmitluminaire, the suitability of the lamp must be verified beforehand. It is extremely difficult to give guidance for alleventualities, therefore end users should be extremely careful in their lamp selection. Where luminaires are goingto be used in predominately American-influenced market areas, ANSI compliant lamps and their associatedcontrol gear can be supplied.Particular care must be taken in the selection of luminaires using metal halide lamps. Where lamp type is shownas HPS/Metal halide in the catalogue pages, the metal halide lamp must be the type which is compatible withHPS(SON) ballasts.

LUMINAIRE OPERALUMINAIRE OPERATIONTIONFLUORESCENTS : The main internal electrical components of a typical twin lamp, non-emergency fluorescent(with T8 bi-pin lamps and G13 lampholders) consists of an incoming mains terminal block, a capacitor for powerfactor correction, copper and iron ballast(s) which stabilise the current to the lamps and a starter for each lampwhich warms the lamp prior to striking. A twin lamp non-emergency fluorescent with a high frequency ballast instead of a copper and iron ballast wouldconsist of the mains terminal block, high frequency ballast and lampholders - no capacitor or starters.FLOODLIGHTS : The main internal electrical components of a typical floodlight consists of an incoming mainsterminal block, capacitor(s) for power factor correction, a copper and iron ballast which stabilises the current tothe lamp and an ignitor which strikes the lamp then cuts out, leaving the ballast to run the lamp.

ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES,CONTROL GEAR & POWER FACTOR CORRECTION(PFC)The standard electrical supply for luminaires in this catalogue is generally 230V/50Hz. As continuous operationof control gear at more than 6% of voltage setting is not recommended, most Chalmit luminaires will have thefacility to overcome this by either tappings (in the case of copper and iron control gear) or by use of a highfrequency electronic ballast (fluorescents only) with a wide range of V/Hz.Most Chalmit products in this catalogue are available with alternative V/Hz to 230V/50Hz including 110V and 120Vvoltages. Those with copper and iron control gear are power factor corrected to values greater than 0.85depending on the lamp, supply voltage and frequency. PFC can be omitted where supplies have large harmoniccomponents which could damage capacitors. Fluorescents with high frequency electronic ballasts have powerfactor near unity. The V/Hz should always be stated when ordering.

INGRESS PROTECTIONINGRESS PROTECTIONWhere luminaires are used in wet conditions, good resistance to water ingress is imperative in preventingelectrical fault conditions. For Chalmit Industrial products the appropriate standard is the latest edition of EN60529 (IEC 529). The required IP rating should always be stated when ordering. The Sterling Stainless Steel shares many of the features ofthe Sterling with the added benefit of having a stainlesssteel body and is suitable for use with fluorescent lampsup to 58W. It is especially suitable for areas requiringexcellent corrosion resistance and protection frommechanical damage.

Manufactured in marine grade 316 stainless steel with apolycarbonate diffuser, quick release stainless steel clipsand sealed to IP65, the Sterling SS complements theSterling range and is especially suitable for harshindustrial environments.

The luminaire is available in both single and twin lampversions. The option of standard switchstart, electronicswitchstart, high frequency and emergency battery back-up ensures the Sterling SS can cope with the mostdemanding situations.

The Kara is a universal luminaire range which readilyinstalls into a wide variety of ceiling types, including mostexposed tee, spring tee, linear plank and plasterboards.

The luminaire is retained within the ceiling by the use offully adjustable side support brackets which allow theluminaire to be drawn up to the underside of the ceiling.Minimum bracket height is 38mm from the face of theluminaire. Some ceiling grids require special end supportand greater box clearance (50mm) or wide trims to ensurecompatibility. Should this be the case then End Mount (EB)or Wide Trim (WT) should be selected from the Options.

A wide range of control gear is available including switchstart, electronic start, high frequency ballasts and digitaldimming systems. 3 hour maintained emergency versionsare available as standard on all models.

The 800 series is a floodlight range specificallydesigned for hostile marine environments.Constructed from 316S31 marine grade stainlesssteel, the range is fitted with internal control gearand can be quickly relamped by removing thetoughened glass front cover via the speciallydesigned front cover clamps. The 503 is a high power floodlight designed for themost arduous marine environments. It is suitablefor 600W and 1000W HPS lamps and tungstenhalogen lamps up to 2000W. For HPS lamp models,the control gear is housed in a separate control gearbox. When required, the ignitor can be mounted ina box on the floodlight allowing control gear to besituated further from the floodlight and eliminatingthe need for expensive high voltage cable betweenthe floodlight and control gear box.

The 503 has a robust, corrosion resistant, lowpressure die cast LM6 aluminium alloy enclosure (aPTFE protective coating can be applied if required)with a toughened glass window and silicone sealing.

The use of the 503 will give extremely high levels ofillumination from a small number of floodlights,greatly reducing installation and maintenance costs.

ECLIPSE IIWELLGLASS


The Eclipse II is a well-glass luminaire suitable for highpressure discharge lamps of up to 400W.

It has a painted lightweight corrosion resistant castaluminium body and heat resistant glass construction withstainless steel fasteners. It has been tested to IP65 and issuitable for use in harsh environments. The lamp glass hasa screwed thread for quick access. The control gear housinghinges on the mounting and termination cover and is held inposition by a single screw barrel nut. The single screwbarrel nut permits easy access and closure of the luminaireduring installation and should maintenance be required.There is a range of wall, surface and stanchion mountingswhich may be integrated into the design. An enclosedreflector for Highbay applications is also available. A rangeof external reflectors is available to direct light efficiently towhere it is required.

A range of lamp control and transformer boxes for IndustrialApplications.

This range of boxes replaces the 500 Series Gearbox for the lowerwattage range of lamps and are used to supply floodlights withoutinternal gear. Where an ignitor is required it must be fitted in theluminaire. The correction capacitors are in the control box.

The main range is for 150W to 600W HPS lamps.

The transformer box is used for stepping up site voltages from110/120V to 220/240V. The transformer is designed for voltagetransformation and is not suitable for use as an isolated transformer.The rating is 500 and 1000VA. Both the control gear and transformershave a built-inthermal cut-out. This protection is needed for lightingcontrol gear operating during possible lamp faults. This range will oftenbe used as replacements for obsolete items using a variety of lamps.The IOM sent with each product and available on request containsessential information for correct application.

Both of thesecontrol gear boxes are constructed from316S31 marine grade stainless steel and aresuitable for both indoor and outdoorapplications where rugged, corrosion resistantconstruction and reliability are essential.

Cable entry is through 20mm clearance holes asstandard or alternatively through tapped cableentry pads. The 501 & 502 are most commonlyused for floodlights such as the 503 & 800Series.
