Industrial Thermocouples & RTDsIn most process applications the temperature sensor is inserted into a thermowell orprotection tube. This protects the sensor from its environment and facilitates easy removaland replacement. These assemblies generally consist of a head, nipple-union-nippleand thermowell. Smart industrial thermocouples and RTDs are available in virtually anycalibration and resistance temperature coefficient.

HeadsSmart Sensors can provide a head for virtually any process application. From our ruggedexplosion proof head used in hazardous locations to our water resistant head that providesa weather tight seal or our plastic design that can withstand caustic wash downs for CIPand sanitary applications. These heads are available in Cast Aluminum, Stainless Steel,Cast Iron and plastic. The conventional threaded type and the new flip-top threadlessdesign are available for your convenience. All metal heads can accept either a sensorterminal block or a DIN size temperature transmitter.

ThermowellsProper temperature element protection starts with the selection of the thermowell orprotection tube. Conditions that influence the selection, include the temperature, pressure,flow velocity, pipe size, insertion length and the process environment and medium. Avariety of materials and process connections are available for both thermowells andprotection tubes. All metallic wells are constructed in strict compliance with ASTM andANSI specifications. For higher temperatures ceramic protection tubes are available.Fluid flowing by a thermowell forms a turbulent wake that has a defined frequency. Thethermowell must have adequate stiffness so its natural frequency is greater than thewake frequency. Let Smart Sensors help you design your well around your processconditions. Miniature Thermocouples & RTDsMiniature thermocouples and RTDs are generally used where thermowells are notnecessary and are commonly found in pilot plants, research and development, furnace,and OEM applications. Thermocouple constructions with diameters as small as .010inches are available with grounded and ungrounded measuring junctions. All miniaturecalibrations can be provided with flexible leads and a variety of connector terminations..

Temperature Transmitters and IndicatorsTransmitter can accept an input from thermocouples or RTDs and produce an analog ordigital output. All outputs are linear with temperature. The instrument can be programmedusing software (easily downloaded to your personal computer) or a common handheldprogramming device. A five year warranty is standard on all transmitters. Hand held andpanel mountable digital thermocouple indicators have large displays and accuraciesnormally found in instruments three times more expensive.

Industrial RTDs

Industrial RTDsAll RTDs are 100% tested to insure that the accuracy and the continuity of the product have not been affected by the manufacturing process.The standard sheath material on all RTDs specified in this section is 316SS. Other sheath materials and coatings are available. Specify usingmodel 1150 on page A-28. Elements are either thin film or wire wound, depending on the style RTD selected. Thin film elements are used inall constructions unless otherwise specified. Each RTD is supplied with a heavy duty spring.

PM -- Heavy duty applications is where this style should be specified. It is suited for temperatures up to 1100°F. Mineral insulated cable isused for this type RTD. Can be used in cryogenic applications at temperatures down to minus 200°F.

The 1340 is easily installed, reduces vibration damage to the head and eliminates stocking several different lengths. This versatile design canbe inserted into an existing well or for use in other general purpose applications where a well or protection tube is not required. The exactimmersion depth is not required when inserting in a well. Simply bottom the sensor to the bottom of the well and tighten the optionalcompression fitting. The 1340 allows a reduction in store room lengths due to this flexibility.

The flexible armor leads allows remote mounting of the head in applications where there is a very tight fit. In high temperature thermocoupleapplications it is recommended that sensor connections are in a area that has ambient temperatures below 400 degrees F. The 1340 designallows the head to be mounted remotely an option that can greatly enhance the accuracy of the measurement.

Field Adjustable Sensors/ Unprotected Thermocouples

Field Adjustable Thermocouples and RTDsToday’s high inventory costs plus the need for quick turnaround onplant maintenance projects or the routine replacement of thermo-couples and RTDs dictates the need for standardization.

Now you can standardize on one length sensor for all your tempera-ture requirements. Our Type ATC, APO, and APH sensors are easilycut to length in the field to a minimum of 3 inches long. The remov-able grommet is easily reinserted into the sheath and protects theleads from abrasion and provides some mechanical relief. Alladjustable sensors are also supplied with a heavy duty spring.

Field adjustable thermocouples and RTDs may be ordered as a “PAK”option. PAKs include a tube cutter, extra grommet and spade lugs.

Unprotected ThermocouplesAt times due to economic reasons, a non-mineral insulated cablethermocouple type is required. Unlike sheathed types these thermo-couples are unprotected from oxidation or chemical attack. Conse-quently their life expectancy is considerably shorter than that of anMI cable design.

Universal Explosion Proof Heads - Standard

Large Universal Explosion Proof Heads

These standard universal heads are available in polishedCast Aluminum and rugged Cast Iron. The heads arethreaded and come standard with a heavy duty siliconegasket to protect against wind blown rain and dust. Thetemperature rating of the gasket is 600 degrees F. Thegasket provides an excellent weather tight seal and meetsNEMA 4 rating. Its universal construction accepts DIN sizehockey puck temperature transmitters and any terminalblock up to 2 inches in diameter. Standard openings are ½inch NPT process and ¾ inch NPT conduit. A stainlesssteel chain which connects the cap to the body is suppliedwith each head.Order Codes*: CA CA – Cast Aluminum and CICI – Cast Iron

Universal Heads - Standard

When space is not a problem this over-sized, toughaluminum head is the answer. This head has all thestandard features of our Universal heads. The large cavitypromotes faster field wiring connections and consequentlyreduces installation costs.

Head housings are available in both cast aluminum and316 stainless steel. Flip Top Sanitary Head

This Cast Aluminum head has no threads, therefore galling(caused by excessive heat and chemical attack) is elimi-nated. Thread galling may require tools to force the capopen. With the Flip Top design no tools are ever neededto open the cap and inspect or replace the sensor.Stainless hinge hardware and an O ring are standard. Thehead is rated for NEMA 4 and accepts DIN size hockeypuck temperature transmitters and any terminal block up to2 inches in diameter. The cost effective aluminum designis replacing conventional threaded heads in many processplants. Standard openings are ½ inch NPT process and ¾inch NPT conduit.

This FDA approved plastic sanitary head has the samespecifications as the FTA (flip top aluminum) head. It isNEMA 4 rated and accepts standard terminal blocks. Dueto the added RFI protection a metal head provides thishead is not recommended as a housing for field mountedtemperature transmitters. The absence of threads in thecap and body and the FDA approved material make thishead an excellent choice in food processing applications,especially where CIP caustic wash downs are used.Standard openings are ½ inch NPT process and ¾ inchNPT conduit

These high density plastic heads are extremely suitable forconditions that would attack conventional metal housings.The screw cover heads come standard with a neoprenerubber gasket and stainless steel chains and screws.Standard openings are ½ inch NPT process and ¾ inchNPT conduit.

This head has all the same characteristics as our UniversalExplosion Proof stainless steel head except it has noagency approvals for use in hazardous locations. It is veryeffective in food processing areas where other metal headsmay be affected by caustic washdowns and other CIPprocedures. It is also very cost effective in process areaswhere aluminum can’t be used.

Terminal BlocksOur universal terminal block fits all special purpose and general purpose heads. It is easily field configurable for single or dual sensorapplications and can be used with either thermocouples or RTDs. Its ceramic base protects against elevated temperatures and the brasscontacts make it easy for field wiring. The block used in EHA and EHI explosion proof heads is available with thermocouple contacts.

*Note: For thermocouple contacts insert calibration letter following block part number. This block can be used in a junction box and is available in a onepiece construction with up to 20 points. To order follow the ordering sequence above. i.e. TB220-J is a single terminal block with 20 points for an IronConstantan® thermocouple.

Nipples and unions are constructed of galvanized carbon steel as a standard construction. Adding an S to the end ofthe order code gets you a corrosion resistant stainless steel extension. Standard extension size is 1/2" NPT.

Mullite and Alumina Tubes

Alumina tubes are 98% pure alumina oxide and can be used with all thermocouple calibrations including noble metals. Good generalpurpose use. Use for all atmospheres with temperature rating of 3400°F. Has fair resistance to thermal shock.Mullite is preferred for oxidizing atmospheres and can not be used with noble metal thermocouples. Maximum temperature rating is 3000°F.Both Mullite and Alumina should be heated prior to process insertion.Metal Ceramic Protection Tubes - Good oxidation resistance and fair resistance to thermal shock. The thermocouple and RTD designs for the type 1400 are multi-purpose but all can be easily installed in a existing thermowell. All thermo-couples are made with high purity mineral oxide insulation and a high temperature stainless steel sheath. RTD’s are selected by determiningthe temperature range and vibration considerations. When inserting in a thermowell the lengths “L” for each type are determined by the overalllength of the well plus ½”. The overall length of the well equals the “U” length + the “T” length (see pages A-8 – A-19). The 1400 has asealed weld connection preventing hot gases from escaping and consequently can be used without a thermowell. The 1443 is designedspecifically for use in a thermowell and comes with a spring assembly which insures positive contact to the bottom of the well and providesgood response characteristics. The 1445 eliminates the need for an exact immersion length.

Multiple Sensor Assembly

Temperature profiling is important whenever multiple points of measurement are required over a broad measuring range. MultipleSensor Assemblies or Multipoints as they are commonly referred to can be designed with using either thermocouples or RTDs and insome cases both. As illustrated above, secondary seals can be supplied for even greater safety assurance. These seals prevent processfluids or gasses from escaping in the event of a process upset. In critical applications component testing is recommended. Dye pen-etrated, X-ray, and hydrostatic testing are standard available tests.

In order to be effective these assemblies must be able to provide temperature point location witha tolerance of plus or minus .25 inches and comparable sensor accuracy throughout the entiremeasuring range. Our unique cross calibration method and positive point identification assureslike sensor accuracy and accurate and safe performance.

Retractable Thermocouple - Type 2050Each sensor is inserted into a guide tube and is individuallyspring loaded to provide good metal to metal contact with themeasuring location. Sensors are easily removed withoutprocess shutdown.

Miniature Multi Thermocouple or RTD - Type 2040Several sensors are accurately positioned in a stainlesssteel tube and each sensor is transitioned to flexible leads.This construction does not require a protection tube.

Positive Contact Thermocouple or RTD - Type 2030This design maintains positive sensor contact to the insidewall of the protection tube for improved accuracy andresponse time. The sensors can be installed as a bundle witha support strip or individually. Sensors can be individuallyreplaced.

Guide Tube and Blocks Thermocouple - Type 2020Sensors are installed into guide tubes which are terminated atthe hot end into heat transfer blocks. These blocks are weldedinto the wall of the protection tube at the required pointsalong the well. This facilitates faster response time, improvedaccuracy and positive point identification. Individual sensorscan be removed while the unit is operating and withoutdisrupting the process. This design lends itself to insertion in asecondary seal construction.

Sensor Isolation Compensation

Isolation or insulation resistance can affect the accuracy of platinum resistance detectors and thermocouples. This often neglected source oferror is the resistance between conductors and/or the resistance between conductor and sheath. Heat, vibration, physical or chemicalinfluence can lower the resistance which can lead to erroneous measurements.

Effects on Platinum RTDsThe 100 ohm platinum resistance detector is a low resistance sensor that can produce significant measurement errors if the insulationresistance drops or is too low. Figure 1 shows a 2 wire RTD connected to a temperature transmitter. The isolation resistance between sensorleads is symbolized by RISO. The measuring current IM passes through the resistance element RPT100 but a small and normally negligiblefraction of this current IER passes through RISO. Since this resistance is much higher than that of the element RPT100, the overall effect on theaccuracy of the measurement is negligible. But if this resistance drops then a greater fraction of the measured current will pass through theisolation resistance. This results in the measured voltage being lower than if the isolation resistance was at the proper level. Consequently, themeasurement will read lower than the actual value. This error can occur with or without an isolated transmitter.

Effects on ThermocouplesThe EMF from a thermocouple is not particularly sensitive to low isolation. Low isolation, however, can cause a secondary junction. Thissituation cancels the primary measuring junction and places the point of measurement at the location of the breakdown in isolation resistance.If this location is a fraction of an inch below the original junction then the error is negligible. If this junction is several inches away the errorcould be significant.

SmartStuff - The safe and accurate solutionSmartStuff combines a specially designed sensor (see Fig. 2) with software in the transmitter to effectively measure drops in isolation resis-tance. This is a continuous self-diagnostic tool that provides the user with assurance that critical temperature loops read accurately – not low.The sensor, although specially made for the SmartStuff system, may be used in conventional temperature loops that do not use transmitters ordo not employ self-diagnostic transmitters like SmartStuff. The software can be configured to IR values as low as 10K ohms. The default settingis 100K ohms. After programming the IR value the next step is to program the output of the transmitter. The SmartStuff system detects insula-tion resistance values that are lower than the set values. The output setting may be configured to any value within the full output range of thetransmitter. SmartStuff is a simple and cost-effective way to improve accuracy, reduce down time, prevent process upsets, save money andprovide a safe operating environment. Oil Seal - Type 1312 & 1314When a bearing is not properly lubricated, premature failure can occur. This failure can prove to be costly. Thisdesign has proven successful in measuring various types of bearing temperatures. The sensor provides quickresponse alerting the operator to an overheated condition. The O-ring prevents lubricants from contaminatingcomponents in the head and designed not to swell even when in continuous contact with oils and synthetic lubri-cants. This feature allows the spring to maintain positive pressure against the bearing housing and assures goodtemperature readings. This sensor is available with 316SS sheath and 3/16" OD. Industrial Hand Held Thermocouples

All Hand Held Thermocouples are constructed using highquality corrosion resistant 316 Stainless Steel sheaths. Eachdesign is supplied with a 5 foot recoiling lead and terminatedwith a molded miniature plug. The plug has pin spacing thatis universal and will adapt to virtually any miniature matingjack or hand held digital indicator. The high temperaturethermoplastic insulated leads provide excellent abrasionresistance and high dielectric qualities. An integral bell springin the sure grip handle provides significant stress relief andprevents open circuit conditions that result from too muchstrain on the thermocouple connection.

In today’s fast reacting process, response time is critical to optimiz-ing product quality and through put. RTD sensors are inherently self-heating and do not posses the fast response time characteristics ofother temperature sensors. By carefully selecting materials that aregood conductors of heat and through a unique manufacturingtechnique the SMARSMARSMARSMARSMART T T T T CIP-FR provides response time of less than 2seconds for a 63.2% step change of temperature in water flowingthrough a pipe at 3 FPS.

The SMARSMARSMARSMARSMART T T T T CIP-FR has all of the same standard characteristics asthe SMARSMARSMARSMARSMARTTTTT CIP-GP and is an excellent choice for food, beverage,dairy and pharmaceutical applications.

The SMART SMART SMART SMART SMART MINI meets the measurement need for small diameterlines without compromising on washdown bacteria rejection. Thecaps are welded to the sheath of the RTD and the support tube. Allthe component parts are 316 stainless steel and process wettedsurfaces are free of any pits, crevices, or voids preventing corrosionor bacteria growth. The RTD diameter is 5/32", providing superiorresponse time, without sacrificing reliability. Materials that come incontact with the process meet or exceed the finish requirements ofthe 3-A Sanitary Council and are designed for direct immersion insanitary applications.

In today’s fast reacting process, response time is critical to optimiz-ing product quality and through put. RTD sensors are inherently self-heating and do not posses the fast response time characteristics ofother temperature sensors. By carefully selecting materials that aregood conductors of heat and through a unique manufacturingtechnique the SMARSMARSMARSMARSMART T T T T CIP-FR provides response time of less than 2seconds for a 63.2% step change of temperature in water flowingthrough a pipe at 3 FPS.

The SMARSMARSMARSMARSMART T T T T CIP-FR has all of the same standard characteristics asthe SMARSMARSMARSMARSMARTTTTT CIP-GP and is an excellent choice for food, beverage,dairy and pharmaceutical applications.

The SMART SMART SMART SMART SMART MINI meets the measurement need for small diameterlines without compromising on washdown bacteria rejection. Thecaps are welded to the sheath of the RTD and the support tube. Allthe component parts are 316 stainless steel and process wettedsurfaces are free of any pits, crevices, or voids preventing corrosionor bacteria growth. The RTD diameter is 5/32", providing superiorresponse time, without sacrificing reliability. Materials that come incontact with the process meet or exceed the finish requirements ofthe 3-A Sanitary Council and are designed for direct immersion insanitary applications.
