Introduction

Many employers in the province do not have the expertise or resources to conduct industrial

hygiene assessments. Therefore, they look to private consultants to provide this service. In

response to queries from employers, WorkplaceNL has developed this Directory of Industrial

Hygiene Service Providers.

Choosing a service provider

The consultants listed in this document have requested to be listed herein as offering the

described services. Any description, contact information or titles have been provided to

WorkplaceNL by the consultants themselves.

This is not an all-inclusive list of industrial hygiene service providers. It is understood that

WorkplaceNL does not endorse or support any of these businesses, nor does it take

responsibility for the quality of service which they provide. Therefore, it is strongly

recommended that anyone seeking consultation services from businesses listed in the

directory follow the recommendations made in this document.

Know what services you require

Be well informed about which specific service you require before asking a consultant to provide

you with an estimate of cost for service. Describe the issue in detail in order for the provider to

clearly understand the services that you need.

Consider the following questions:

What type of information will the assessment provide?

What is the typical duration of the assessment?

Are there any documents that you will need to supply (process descriptions, safety data

sheets, ventilation plans, etc.)?

What type of report you can expect to receive?

Will the report include recommendations for controlling identified hazards?

Is it likely that follow-up services will be required?

Are there any limitations to the assessment you should be aware of?

How long after the assessment is completed will you receive a report of the findings?

If you have been directed by the Occupational Health and Safety Division of Service NL to

obtain industrial hygiene services, you may wish to consider providing the service provider with

the text contained in the “To Wit” section of your written directives. This will help the consultant

understand what is required. You may also need to provide them with the due date required by

the order, so they can advise you if it is possible for them to provide you with a report by the

required date.

Ask for a quote (cost estimate)

When contracting a service provider it is a good idea to get several quotes, so that you can

compare pricing.

When asking for a quote ensure that it is in writing and that it outlines in detail what services

are being provided (i.e. travel, lodging, site time, laboratory analysis, report-writing, etc.), as

well as, how long the estimate is valid. It is also advisable to ask if the estimate will include

follow-up services.

Determine the qualifications of the consultant

Industrial hygiene service providers may vary in their qualifications. Many qualifications may be

specific to an individual worker at that location and not necessarily to the consulting firm.

Consider asking the following questions:

What are the qualifications (education and training) of the assessor?

Do they hold any professional certifications?

Have they done similar work in the past?

Below are some examples of professional certifications:

Industrial Hygienists

o Certified industrial hygienist (CIH)

o Registered occupational hygienist (ROH)

o Registered occupational hygiene technician (ROHT)

Radon Specialists

o Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP), Measurement

o Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP), Mitigation

Asbestos Air Sample Laboratory

o Registration with a quality control program, such as IRRST
