Bahrain’s champion body-builder, Sami Al-Hadd-ad, detained by Qatari

authorities while on a fishing cruise last week has been re-leased.

An Alayam report said Qatar has also released two other de-tained sailors, Muhammad Yusef Al-Dossary and Habib Abbas.

Sami Al-Haddad, the Lion of Bahrain, is the first Mr Olym-pia amateur winner and world champion overall winner in 2011. He is an IFBB PRO body-builder from Bahrain and owner of BlacksmithGym.

Interior Ministry in a state-ment confirmed their release.

“Sami Ibrahim Al-Hadd-ad, Muhammad Yusef Al-Dos-

sary and Bahraini sailor Habib Abbas were released,” the state-ment confirmed. Qatari authori-ties arrested Abbas on 3 Decem-ber 2020

“However, their boats and the Banooshs (traditional boats) are with the Qatari authorities,” the ministry statement said.

The number of Bahraini boats held by Qatar since 2017 has reached 50.

Sailors’ release follows in-

terventions by Bahrain as per a cabinet directives to undertake necessary processes for releas-ing all citizens detained by Qatar and their return to Bahrain, and a meeting of the Council of Min-isters on 11 January 2021.

Interior Ministry investigating spying claims against Qatar TDT | Manama

The Anti-Cyber Crime Department at the Ministry of Inte-rior has opened an investigation into a video clip alleging

Qatar of interfering in Bahrain’s internal affairs. The viral clip featuring Makki Ali Kwaid, a Bahraini citizen

native of Sitra alleges that Qatari security tried to recruit him. The incident, according to him, occurred after Qatari security

arrested him and confiscated his boat. He claims that Qatar released him from captivity in exchange

for information on Bahraini security services in the Sitra region. Ali Kwaid also claims that he received a monthly salary of 10

When Zainab turns challenges into opportunities TDT | Manama

“Self-acceptance is the key to success.”Zainab Al-Momen, a student

of Sitra Secondary School for Girls, said this. For she believes we are the ones who are solely responsible for our inner peace.

When asked, “what does all of this have to do with reaching your goals and dreams?

Zainab said, “I have been able to prove myself among the students and have made many friends.”

“My friends always help me with reading and all the things I need.”

Zainab is one of the many visually challenged students in the Kingdom,

who had transformed challenges into opportu-

nities.

People used to see special ed-ucation synonymous with the education of blind, deaf, men-tally and physically challenged pupils. This limited view had led

to the creation of a school system with special schools and institu-tions which have not been of any significant relevance to the rest of the school system.

However, in Bahrain, things are different.

Here there is a general accept-

ance that experiencing difficult-ly in leaning is a normal part of schooling rather than an indi-cation that there is something wrong with the child.

Thanks to the Education min-istry of Bahrain, students like Zainab Al-Momen are develop-

ing and adjusting to life. Zainab says she is positive to-

wards the policy of integration. “My experience tells, the in-

tegration as a successful idea because it gained us strength and self-pride.”

Teachers, who are “taking into account our conditions while ex-plaining lessons contributed to understanding lessons quickly.”

“God gave me strength and strong insight to learn and un-derstand things that are new.”

Zainab is also actively pursu-ing her interest in the Japanese language.

She is utilising various lan-guage-learning programmes and is also making use of YouTube channels.Zainab said she is now working

intensively to master Japanese language.

When asked about Zainab’s in-tegration into the regular school system, Khadija Radhi, guardian of Zainab, said: “The integra-tion confirms the great interest Bahrain attaches to people with special needs.”

“This makes her feel that she is part of the community, just like all her friends.”

“It helped to improve her self-concept and encourages all like her to make decisions, take responsibility, take risks and foster independence in the real world.”

What does the ministry say?The education ministry said

it’s providing students like Zain-ab with many support services

and aids including equipment, books and qualified teachers to experience genuine success.

The ministry said it’s also supporting the Saudi-Bahraini Institute for the Blind by provid-ing machines and books print-ed in Braille and help students overcome difficulties in facings exams.

“The success reaped by the visually challenged students and the superiority they maintain over their peers proves the suc-cess of their integration into reg-ular schooling, especially during exceptional circumstances,” the ministry points out.

“These pioneering educa-tional experience has raised the ranking of Bahrain among other countries,” the ministry added.

Braille is a system of touch reading and writing for blind persons in which raised dots represent the letters of the alphabet. It also contains equivalents for punctuation marks and provides symbols to show letter groupings. Braille is read by moving the hand or hands from left to right along each line.

Zainab is one of the many visually challenged students in the Kingdom, who had transformed challenges into opportunities.

Peace fundamental pillar of Bahrain’s diplomacy: Minister

TDT | Manama

The diplomacy led by His Majesty the King consid-

ers peace a fundamental pillar in Bahrain international rela-tions, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said.

“It’s a path that illuminates the diplomatic process and from this standpoint that dip-lomats sense the value of peace in their diplomatic missions,” said Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.  The minister was speaking during a virtual cel-ebration marking the Diplo-macy Day in the presence of Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, ministry’s undersec-retaries, assistant undersecre-taries, ambassadors of Bahrain abroad, directors of depart-ments, and employees of the foreign ministry.

Dr Zayani said the celebra-tion “reminds of the deep-root-ed Bahraini diplomacy that has spanned over fifty years since the establishment of the Min-istry of Foreign Affairs in 1971, with successive achievements and successes over the last five decades.”  “This has won Bah-rain a high position at the in-ternational level, and strength-ened its bilateral relations with many countries”, the minister said recalling the efforts of the founder of Bahraini diplomacy, His Highness Shaikh Moham-med bin Mubarak, the Deputy Prime Minister.

On the Mubadara Pro-gramme (initiative) and the work initiatives programme, the ministry said it stemmed from a desire to involve all em-ployees in developing the work environment.

Social support programmes will continue TDT | Manama

The general state budget will have provisions to continue

the social support programmes for citizens similar to previous years.

Khaled Hussein Almaskati, the Chairman of the Finan-cial and Economic Affairs of the Shura Council, said this dur-ing a third joint meeting held yesterday to discuss projects mentioned in the general state budget for the 2021 to 2022 pe-riod.

“The decrease in the budg-etary provision in this regard is minor considering the actual amount required to cover these

obligations,” said Almaskati cit-ing ministry’s reply to a parlia-mentary question.

He also cited the govern-ment’s willingness to amend the provisions.

The committee listened to explanations of the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tour-ism on the financial allocations

within the general budget, and efforts to attract investments, encourage tourism, promote trade, and boost export of Bah-raini products.

The Minister of Health, Faiqia Al-Saleh, told the committee that the allocations for the ministry in the budget as nor-mal and there is no emergency fund. “The ministry relies on the emergency budget of the Min-istry of Finance and National Economy to deal with all emer-gency situations including the pandemic,” she said.

Al-Saleh said the  Ministry employed Bahraini nurses in large numbers during 2020, and

limited the services of foreign nurses to the maximum care departments.

The minister also revealed that an advisory body is working on its cost of services, mainly free health services. The study will finish this year.

Concerning new projects, the minister said that 4 million di-nars are set aside to expand out-patient clinics in the Salmaniya Medical Complex, develop Psy-chiatric Hospital, and improve some health centres.

Almaskati  said the commit-tee will continue to hold joint meetings. Next meeting is on Wednesday.

United Women’s Economic Development Network launched

• The Network will provide a platform for building ties and trust among women in each country

TDT | Washington

Women business leaders and entrepreneurs from

the United States, Bahrain, Morocco, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Uzbekistan, and Kosovo convened yester-day for the virtual launch of the United Women’s Economic Development Network.

The event was hosted by the US Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues Kelley Currie, Special Envoy for Economic Normalization Aryeh Light-stone, and the US International Development Finance Corpo-ration Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Global Women’s Issues Char-ity Wallace.

The Network will provide a platform for building ties and trust among women in each country, deepening the greater regional cooperation prom-ised by the Abraham Accords and bringing the economic

benefits of normalisation to businesswomen and leaders in additional countries, including the United States, Uzbekistan, and Kosovo.

It will also advance wom-en’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship, a major facet of US foreign policy, in line with the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative.

Special Envoy for Economic Normalisation Aryeh Light-stone welcomed the group of approximately 40 wom-en to the event. He also not-ed that the Abraham Accord countries are ascendant and female entrepreneurship in those countries has unlimited potential.

In her remarks, Ambassa-dor-at-Large for Global Wom-en’s Issues Kelley Currie ap-plauded Marwa Al Mansouri and Netta Korin for founding the network, which will com-plement US objectives under W-GDP and contribute to last-ing peace across the region. The launch of the Network also builds on the announce-ment last week of the DFC’s 2X MENA initiative under W-GDP, launched in Morocco by Am-bassador Currie and DFC SVP Wallace.

Samsung launches new flagship Galaxy S smartphone

Reuters | Seoul

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Thursday unveiled the

first Galaxy S smartphone with a stylus for on-screen work called the S Pen, more than a month ahead of its usual annu-al release schedule for models of its flagship compact phone.

Analysts have said offering a stylus within the Galaxy S21 series might signal the South

Korean tech giant will merge the S line with its other pre-mium smartphone range, the Note, already equipped with a note-taking stylus. That could free up resources for Samsung to push its separate range high-end foldable phones as key mass products rather than niche devices.

Samsung is also looking to grab market share after Chi-na’s Huawei Technologies was hit with US sanctions that re-stricted its supply and hurt sales, analysts have said.

In the US, the Galaxy S21 price starts at $799.99, S21 Plus at $999.99, and S21 Ultra at $1,199.99.

The series will be wide-ly available starting Jan. 29 through Samsung.com, carri-ers and retailers online, Sam-sung said.

The standard S21’s screen size is 6.2 inches, with the S21 Plus at 6.7 inches and S21 Ul-tra is 6.8 inches, optimal for watching videos and gaming. The latter two are close in size to last year’s Galaxy Note ‘phablets’ - a cross between a phone and a tablet.

Biden to unveil plan to pump $1.5 trn into pandemic-hit economyReuters | Wilmington, Del.

President-elect Joe Biden will unveil a stimulus package

proposal on Thursday designed to jump-start the economy dur-ing the coronavirus pandemic with an economic lifeline that could exceed $1.5 trillion and help minority communities.

Biden campaigned last year on a promise to take the pan-demic more seriously than Pres-

ident Donald Trump, and the package aims to put that pledge into action with an influx of resources for the coronavirus vaccine rollout and economic recovery.

The incoming administra-tion will work with Congress on the quick stimulus package after Biden takes office on Jan. 20, although the impeachment of Trump threatens to con-

sume lawmakers in the initial weeks.

The stimulus package has a price tag above $1.5 trillion and includes a commitment for $1,400 stimulus checks, accord-ing to a source familiar with the proposal, and Biden is expected to commit to partner with pri-vate companies to increase the number of Americans getting vaccinated.

A trilateral meeting has been held among Rus-sian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime

Minister Nikol Pashinyan. President Ilham Aliyev has said that a trilateral

meeting of the Azerbaijani, Russian and Armenian leaders in Moscow on January 11 shows that the sides are determined to achieve the result to ensure sustainable and secure development in the region.

Aliyev made the remarks at a joint news confer-ence after the trilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Moscow on January 11. This is the first meeting among Aliyev, Putin and Pashinyan after the three signed a peace deal on November 10, 2020, to end the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh that lasted from September 27 to November 10, 2020.

“Two months have passed since the ceasefire was declared, and the fact that leaders of the three coun-tries that signed the Statement on 9-10 November are meeting in Moscow today shows that we are deter-mined to achieve the result and draw a line under the events of September and November,” he said.

Aliyev thanked Putin for his initiative to hold the meeting.

“I would like to thank you for this invitation and your initiative to hold this meeting. I share your opinion that the meeting was very important for the further sustainable and secure development of our region,” he added.

The head of state hailed a statement that he signed along with Putin and Pashinyan at the end of the trilateral meeting on January 11 in Moscow.

“The statement signed today testifies to our inten-tions because one of the clauses of the statement on the results of the cessation of hostilities dealt with the restoration of transport communications. This area can impart great dynamism to the development of the region and strengthen security. The opening of transport communications is in the interests of the peoples of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia and our neighbours,” Aliyev said.

He expressed confidence that “neighbouring countries will also extensively join the creation of a diversified network of transport corridors and ar-teries in our region. We must continue to try to find areas of activity that are effective and result-oriented in the short term”.

Aliyev noted the successful fulfilment of the Kara-bakh peace deal signed in November 2020.

“In general, I would like to say that the joint statement of 9 November, or 10 November as per Azerbaijani time, is being successfully implemented. Most of the provisions of this Statement have been implemented. The Russian peacekeeping mission is doing its job effectively and there has been no serious cause for concern over the past two months, except for minor incidents. All this gives us confidence that, as Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin] said, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has been consigned to history and we must think about the future, how to live together as neighbours, how to work to open transport arteries and strengthen regional stability and security,” Aliyev added.

He thanked Putin for the invitation, describing the meeting as “very useful and fruitful”.

Apart from the trilateral meeting, a bilateral meet-ing was held between Aliyev and Putin.

In turn, Putin thanked at the news conference President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan for agreeing to discuss the issues related to the im-plementation of terms of the Karabakh peace deal signed in November.

“We conclude that the terms of this agreement have been generally complied with and no serious incidents have been recorded,” Putin said.

The Russian leader highly evaluated the January 11 trilateral meeting.

“I consider today’s meeting to be very important and useful because we were able to reach an agree-ment and sign a joint statement on the development of the situation in the region. I am talking about specific steps to establish economic relations and develop infrastructure projects,” he said.

Putin added that for this purpose a working group will be established headed by the Azerbaijani, Ar-menian and Russian deputy prime ministers. “In the near future, they will set up working expert subgroups and present concrete plans on the de-

velopment of the transport infrastructure and the economy of the region,” he said.

Russia’s peacekeeping group is fulfilling its obli-gations to both sides.

Putin expressed his confidence that “the imple-mentation of these agreements will benefit both the peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan, will undoubt-edly benefit the region as a whole, and hence the interests of the Russian Federation”.

He noted that Russia’s peacekeeping group is ful-filling its obligations to both sides and that continu-ous work is being done to restore the infrastructure, energy, residential buildings and social infrastruc-ture in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Unblocking of transport communicationsThe statement signed by the Azerbaijani, Russian

and Armenian leaders in Moscow on January 11, 2021, consists of four clauses. Under the new state-ment, a trilateral working group co-chaired by the Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian deputy prime ministers will be estab-lished to imple-ment clause 9 of the November 2020 statement related to the unblocking of all economic and transport com-munications in the region.

The working group will hold its first meeting b e f o r e Ja n u -ary 30, 2021, to formulate a list of main activity directions aris-i n g f ro m t h e implementation of clause 9 of the November statement, estab-lishing railway and automobile communication as a priority, and also determine other directions as agreed upon among the three leaders.

To implement key activities, t h e w o r k i n g group co-chairs w i l l a p p r o v e the composition of expert sub-groups for these directions. The subgroups will consist of officials from the Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian relevant authorities and organizations. The expert subgroups will, within a month of the working group meeting, submit a list of projects specifying the required resources and activities for their implementation and approval at the highest lev-el by the Parties (Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia).

The working group will, before 1 March 2021, submit a list of activities and their implementation schedule for approval at the highest level by the Parties, which would envisage restoration and in-stallation of new infrastructure facilities required for the organization, implementation and provision of security of international travels carried out across Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the transpor-tation carried out by Azerbaijan and Armenia the implementation of which requires the crossing of Azerbaijani and Armenian territories.

COVID-19 infection gives some immunity for at least five months, UK study findsReuters | London

People who have had COVID-19 are highly likely to have immu-

nity to it for at least five months but there is evidence that those with antibodies may still be able to carry and spread the virus, a UK study of healthcare workers has found.

Preliminary findings by scientists at Public Health England (PHE) showed that reinfections in people who have COVID-19 antibodies from a past infection are rare - with only 44 cases found among 6,614 previ-ously infected people in the study.

But experts cautioned that the findings mean people who con-tracted the disease in the first wave of the pandemic in the early months of 2020 may now be vulnerable to catching it again.

They also warned that people with so-called “natural immunity” - acquired through having had the infection - may still be able car-

ry the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in their nose and throat, and could unwittingly pass it on.

“We now know that most of those who have had the virus, and devel-oped antibodies, are protected from reinfection, but this is not total and

we do not yet know how long pro-tection lasts,” said Susan Hopkins, senior medical adviser at PHE and co-leader of the study, whose find-ings were published yesterday.

“This means even if you believe you already had the disease and are

protected, you can be reassured it is highly unlikely you will develop severe infections. But there is still a risk you could acquire an infection and transmit (it) to others.”

A statement on the study said its findings did not address antibody or other immune responses to vac-cines now being rolled out against COVID-19, or on how effective vac-cines would be. Vaccine responses will be considered later this year, it said.

North Korea stages military parade after rare party congressSouth Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported that North Korea may have held military parade

• N Korean military parades are closely watched by observers for signs of new military technology

Reuters | Seoul

North Korea appeared to have stage a military parade yester-day - an event that would be

closely watched by international ob-servers for signs of new military tech-nology - after wrapping up a rare ruling party congress, Yonhap news agency reported.

Pyongyang is under international sanctions for its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes.

The parade, which was not shown live on the isolated nation’s state media, began between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. (0900-1000 GMT) and was still going on as of 8 p.m., Yonhap cited an unnamed South Korean government source as saying.

Military aircraft were spotted re-leasing fireworks in formation, said NK News, a website that monitors North Korea, citing a source who saw fire-works.

Ahead of the congress, commercial

satellite imagery had shown troops rehearsing in formation and NK News cited a source who said they heard heavy vehicles moving in Pyongyang on Sunday.

On Wednesday, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of leader Kim Yong Un and a member of the party Central Commit-tee, criticised South Korea’s military for saying it had detected signs of a parade in Pyongyang on Sunday. The move was

an expression of the South’s “hostile approach” towards the North, she said in a statement carried by North Korean news agency KCNA.

Leader Kim and other North Korean officials had packed into an indoor sta-dium in Pyongyang on Wednesday to watch performances from military and civilian art troupes and youth groups, mostly on themes of glorifying Kim’s leadership and reinforcing messaging

from the party congress, news agency KCNA reported yesterday.

The congress, which ran for eight days in Pyongyang, was the first since 2016 and just the second since 1980.

The performance was the latest in a series of large gatherings this week where Kim and the other attendees did not appear to wear masks or follow other social distancing measures, based on images released by state media.

North Korea has not reported any confirmed cases of the coronavirus, but it has imposed strict border closures, domestic travel restrictions and other measures to prevent an outbreak.

S. Korea’s top court upholds ex-president’s 20-year jail term

AFP | Seoul

South Korea’s top court upheld a 20-year pris-

on sentence for disgraced former president Park Ge-un-hye yesterday, in the final ruling over the corrup-tion scandal that brought her down.

The decision brings to an end an extended legal pro-cess that involved multiple trials and appeals, including a previous Supreme Court hearing.

The country’s first female president was impeached in 2017 after huge street pro-tests against her rule.

She was convicted the fol-lowing year of bribery and abuse of power and jailed for 30 years. A series of ap-peals, a retrial and further appeals followed which re-duced her sentence to 20 years.

Yesterday, the case went for a second time be-fore the Supreme Court, which said it accepted and confirmed the 20-year sentence.

The court also upheld fines and forfeits totalling 21.5 billion won (US$19.5 million).

Park has been boycott-ing the proceedings, say-ing they are biased against her, and was not present in court yesterday.

In addition, she has sep-arately been sentenced to two years in prison -- to run consecutively -- for election law violations.

Ugandans vote in charged presidential election under internet blackoutReuters | Kampala

Ugandans voted in a tense elec-tion yesterday under heavy se-

curity and an internet blackout as veteran leader Yoweri Museveni pursues a sixth term against a for-mer pop star half his age.

The internet went down on the eve of the vote, with some parts of the country reporting complete dis-ruptions or significant slowdowns, after one of the most violent cam-paigns in years.

Museveni is seeking a sixth term in office, having ruled for almost four decades, against singer-turned-MP Bobi Wine, 38, whose popularity among a youthful population has

rattled the former rebel leader. In the Kamwokya slum, where

Wine grew up and is hugely popular,

voters streamed to a polling sta-tion as police tried to enforce social distancing after weeks of surging coronavirus cases in the East African nation.

A group of about two dozen riot officers marched past, with heavy military and police presence in other parts of the capital.

“I am here to change the leader-ship of this nation because for years they’ve been telling me they will secure my future. They have not done that,” said driver Joseph Nsu-duga, 30, one of the first in line to vote.

“I need to see change for my chil-dren. People are yearning for change but we are seeing nothing.”

Afghanistan retires ‘39’ number plates

Reuters | Kabul

Afghan traffic authorities are retiring licence plates containing the number

“39” because the figure has long been as-sociated with pimping and prostitution.

Vice President Amrullah Saleh said a decree to that effect would be introduced this week, eliminating what had become a tempting source of bribery by traffic officials.

“The number (39) will be removed from the traffic system. It is said that people pay $300 bribes to avoid the number,” he said in a Facebook post.

The origin of 39’s street meaning is lost in time, but said to be linked to a notorious pimp in the western city of Herat, whose car registration plate contained the num-ber.

Now, anyone driving a car sporting the figure risks being linked to an underground sex industry that is taboo in the devoutly Muslim nation.

New car owners have resorted to paying bribes to avoid being issued licence plates with the digits.

“At the traffic department they ask you if you want number 39 or not,” said Hakim, a car dealer in the capital.

“If you don’t, then they ask for a bribe.”He said nobody would buy a second-hand

car with the digits because they consider it “shameful”.

News in brief u Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

stripped down to a black t-shirt and got vaccinated as the nation of 83 million people began rolling out China’s Sinovac jab. The 66-year-old Turkish leader was whisked into an Ankara hospital by a bevy of security guards before emerging about an hour later to stress the importance of officials setting a good example by getting the jab.

u The death toll from an attack on UN peacekeepers in Mali has risen to four after another soldier died from his wounds, the United Nations said. A detachment of Ivorian peacekeepers was travelling between Douentza and Timbuktu in the northwest on Wednesday when it hit one or more roadside bombs before coming under fire, the UN’s MINUSMA peacekeeping mission said. Three were killed in the attack, and “a fourth Blue Helmet has sadly died of his wounds,” MINUSMA spokesman Olivier Salgado said on social media.

u US lawmakers who refuse to go through

metal detectors installed at the House of Representatives after last week’s Capitol riot will be fined, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. The fine for the first offense will be $5,000, and $10,000 for the second, Pelosi said in a statement. Fines will be docked directly from members’ salaries. “It is tragic that this step is necessary, but the Chamber of the People’s House must and will be safe,” Pelosi said as she announced the measure.

u The second year of the COVID-19 pandemic may be tougher than the first given how the new coronavirus is spreading, especially in the northern hemisphere as more infectious variants circulate, the World Health Organization (WHO) said. “We are going into a second year of this, it could even be tougher given the transmission dynamics and some of the issues that we are seeing,” Mike Ryan, the WHO’s top emergencies official, said during an event on social media.

u Both Pope Francis and his predecessor, former pope Benedict XVI, have

received the coronavirus vaccine, the Vatican said. The Argentine pontiff, 84, has previously spoken of the importance of the jab in the fight against Covid-19, which has severely curtailed his own love of being among his flock.

Gwen Stefani grew up listening to MadnessIANS | Los Angeles

Singer Gwen Stefani has shared how her sibling got her into lis-

tening to UK band Madness when they were growing up.

The No Doubt singer, who grew up in California, has re-vealed how she was introduced to the ska music genre, re-ports contactmusic.com.

“I was 17 when my broth-er was getting into these ska bands and discovered music from England and this band called Mad-ness and would bring a l l t h e i r r e c o r d s home,” said Stefani

“When we got into Madness it felt like underground weird music and they re-ally sang about their culture and Camden Town, and we really looked up to England and London - that music and Stiff Re-cords. That led us into reggae and all

the ska acts and they united in a scene,” she added.

She recently returned with her first solo music in four years, “Let me reintroduce myself”, which saw her go back to her ska and reggae roots in homage to her time as the lead singer of the band No Doubt.

She admitted she cried when her fiance and singer Blake

Shelton told her the song was number 16 on the

iTunes chart.“I was standing in

the kitchen the day the song came out and Blake came in and said: ‘Oh

my God you’re n u m b e r 1 6 on iTunes.’ I just burst out crying and I didn’t even k n ow t h a t I f e l t l i ke that ,” said Stefani.

“ T h e whole rea-s o n w e

wrote it was that I was feeling like an underdog or over, like nobody would listen anymore. I’m fine with that, I’ve had my time, 30 years I’m good. But the one thing that still fu-els my fire is writing music, you get addicted to that feeling, that taste of blood,” she added.

Rebel Wilson reveals she was once kidnapped at gunpoint in AfricaFox | Los Angeles

Rebel Wilson revealed that she was once kid-napped at gunpoint.

The actress, who has been documenting her weight loss journey throughout the year, appeared on an episode of the series “Straight Talking” for Sky One. The show takes celebrities and puts them through an interview with former Royal Marines Com-mando Ant Middleton.

During Wilson’s appear-ance, Middleton asked her about the moment in her life when she experienced the most fear.

“There was one time in Af-rica where I got kidnapped,” the “Pitch Perfect” actress re-vealed (via Sky News).

The 40-year-old star was traveling through rural Mozam-bique in Africa with a group of women when they were set upon by armed men. The actress said she was riding in a truck when another truck pulled up beside them and the men poured out and started

making demands. “Yeah, with the big guns, and

were like, ‘you’ve got to get off your truck’,” she explained. “They took us to this house in the middle of nowhere.”

The star surprised herself, noting that she was “good in a crisis” and ended up being her group’s “team leader” in dealing with the kidnappers.

“They sat us down. I said, ‘everybody link arms.’ I’m pet-rified in the night they might want to take one of the girls or something,” she said. “Luckily, we weren’t harmed.”

Perplexingly, Wilson and her friends were simply allowed to leave by the kidnappers the following day despite being held at gunpoint the whole night.

“The next day, they came and said, ‘oh, your truck is ready now you can go - go, go’, you know,” she said. “So we just didn’t ask any ques-tions, we got back on that truck and just got back out of there and then crossed the South African border a few hours later.”

Since the harrowing incident, the star believes that she’s fig-ured out why they were allowed to leave unharmed.

“I think maybe those guys used us to smuggle illegal things in the bottom of the truck,” she theorized.

The star did not specify when the alleged incident took place.

Anne Hathaway no longer wants to be called by her first name

• Hathaway explains why hearing it gives her anxiety

Fox | Los Angeles

Anne Hathaway no longer wants to be referred to by

the name everyone knows her as.

The “Oceans 8” actress said as much on Tuesday evening’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” where she told the comedian that hearing “Anne” from an-yone other than her mother makes her rather uneasy.

“The only per-son who calls me Anne is my mother, and she only does it when she’s really mad at me, like really mad,” t h e O s -car-winning a c t re s s t o l d the late-night host. “So every time I step out in public and s o m e o n e cal ls my

name, I think they’re going to yell at me. People are like, ‘Anne!’ And I’m like ‘What? What did I do?’”

Despite Hathaway’s first name actually being Anne, the “Devil Wears Prada” said when she’s worked on some film pro-jects, other costars and the like have abided by her wishes and refrained from calling Hatha-way by her birth name.

“People are so lovely, they don’t want to be presumptu-ous, and so I think they come up with workarounds on set because the truth is nobody’s comfortable calling me Anne ever. It doesn’t fit. I’m an An-nie,” Hathaway pressed. “Peo-

ple call me ‘Miss H,’ people call me ‘Hath,’ so feel free, call me anything but Anne.”

The 38-year-old mother of two and wife of Adam

Shulman added that she actually regretted

using her legal name when she did a commer-cial at age 14 and was asked how she wished to be addressed upon receiv-ing her SAG (Screen Actors Guild) card.

Roma in fifth heading into Dakar final day

TDT | Manama

Bahrain Raid Xtreme driver, Nani Roma, set out from

Al-Ula bound for Yanbu for stage eleven, the penultimate stage of the Dakar Rally 2021. Competitors navigated a total of 598km of driving, made up of 134km of road and 464km of special stage.

The recent bad weather forced organisers to shorten the course by 47km ahead of the stage commencing – reduced from 511km special stage – as the rain had erased the tracks in some sectors. However, the dunes remained the main fea-ture for the stage that the Hunt-er had to overcome.

Stage eleven proved challeng-ing for competitors, with many kilometres to cover and diffi-cult navigation. The second half of the stage – with a series of dunes, canyons and dry rivers – caused many drivers to lose the track and sacrifice time.

Roma, a two-time Dakar Ral-ly winner, and co-driver Alex Winocq, completed one of the rally’s most difficult stag-es in 18th place, with a time of 05:01:52, +27:28 behind the leader. This maintains Roma’s position as 5th overall for the sixth consecutive stage, +3:15:54 behind the overall leader.

Commenting on arrival at the bivouac in Yanbu, Roma said: “It was not an easy day. We made a few mistakes in naviga-tion, but this is the Dakar Rally. When you make a mistake, the important thing is to remain calm and not to get nervous as that can lead to more errors. It was not our day today, but I think everyone lost time at the end with the navigation. This is part of the game – the Dakar is part speed and part navigation and we must find the compromise with both. Tomor-row we will go out like we have done every day, concentrating on navigation and maintaining focus.”

Bahrain Raid Xtreme Chief Engineer, Richard Thompson added: “Today’s stage really fa-voured the buggies and during the afternoon section Nani and Alex made a couple of naviga-tional errors. We have around a ten-minute buffer tomorrow between us and Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi [Abu Dhabi Racing] in P6, and only a minute be-hind him is Vladimir Vasilyev [X-Raid Team], so it’s going to be a really tight day of driving. After sitting in P5 for six days, we are going to do everything we can to maintain that position tomorrow. We will do a big ser-vice this evening – nothing par-ticularly major – but everything possible to ensure Nani is ready to fight tomorrow.”

Stage twelve of the Dakar Rally will bring the 2021 edition to a close. Drivers must navigate a final 447km stage from Yan-bu and crossing the finish line on the shore of the Red Sea in Jeddah, with 227km road and 202km special stage.

Teng not just scorer but ‘well-rounded’ playerTDT | Manila

Alaska Aces forward Jeron Teng has been touted by

many as the would-be corner-stone of the storied franchise in the future.

And with the way he con-tinues to improve, there is no doubt that he will soon become one and a certified superstar in the Philippine Basketball Asso-ciation (PBA).

During the 2020 PBA Phil-ippine Cup, the 26-year-old, 6-foot-3 swingman was able to show that he is not just a scorer but a truly complete and well-rounded player.

Alaska head coach Jeff Cari-aso acknowledged Teng’s mas-sive development and how he has managed to find ways to help the team other than just scoring, which is typically his most vaunted weapon.

“That’s one thing we have to understand with Jeron. He’s really a guy with lots of skills. So I think if we showcase all the other parts of his game, he will be such an effective and special part of the team because he can do other things that oth-ers can’t,” said the bench task-master.

Teng, son of former PBA star Alvin “Robocop” Teng, joined Alaska in 2017 as the PBA’s fifth overall draft pick after a cele-brated collegiate career which found him winning two UAAP titles and earning two UAAP Fi-nals MVP awards in the process.

With teams focused on limit-ing his points production, Teng was able to showcase the other facets of his all-around game.

Often pressed by defenders, even double-teamed, he was an enthusiastic passer who easily found open teammates for easy baskets.

Teng, who is not a point guard nor the team’s designat-ed player maker, actually led Alaska in assists during the past conference. He averaged the

most assists per game among the Aces with an average of 4.25 dimes during the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup.

Teng was at his best issuing assists during Alaska’s nail-bit-ing 89-88 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. He finished with eight assists while also adding 13 points, three re-bounds and one block in that game.

Teng, one of the top young players of his generation fol-lowing a decorated high school and college career before be-ing drafted by Alaska in 2017, was also a voracious rebounder who relied not just on strength and speed but also anticipation to gobble up boards enabling him to average 4.75 rebounds in Alaska’s 12 games.

A known scorer Teng’s big-gest contribution for Alaska was still his point production. He averaged in double digits in scoring with 11.25 points per game.

De Minaur wins fourth title after Bublik quits in Antalya

AFP | London

Australia’s Alex de Minaur claimed his fourth career

title on Wednesday when Al-exander Bublik quit the An-talya Open final after just two games.

The fourth-seeded De Min-aur led the eighth seed 2-0 in the first set when his Kazakh opponent retired due to a right ankle injury he suffered in his semi-final.

“I knew I’d put in a great pre-season. I felt good and ready to compete,” said 21-year-old De Minaur.

“I gave myself the best pos-sible chance to go deep in this tournament.”

De Minaur, whose previous titles came in 2019 at Sydney, Atlanta and Zhuhai, now heads to Melbourne for the Austral-ian Open which starts on Feb-ruary 8.

“I’m looking forward to re-

turning to Australia, where I hope to have a good Aussie summer in front of a home crowd,” the world number 23 added.

Mafra eager to write his own “Rocky story” at BRAVE CF 46Mafra has started to think about the similarities between the movie and his own path to the BRAVE Combat Federation world title

• Leonardo Mafra will face Eldar Eldarov in Sochi

TDT | Manama

It is half past 11pm in a hotel room in Sochi, Russia. Still affected by the massive jet

lag due to his trip all the way from California, Super Light-weight title contender Leonar-do Mafra hits play once again, “Rocky 4” is about to start again.

Mafra has started to think about the similarities between the movie and his own path to the BRAVE Combat Federation world title when his title bout against Eldar Eldarov was first announced. Like the American boxer portrayed by Sylvester Stallone in the 1985 movie, he would also travel all the way to Russia to face a local superstar, calm and reserved, in his home country.

Rocky Balboa’s underdog tale has been his inspiration, and at the same time the much-needed fun and distraction from the demanding pre-fight routine. Watching the movie over and over again brought back child-hood memories to the now 31-year-old Mafra.

“Rocky is a very good movie, it’s part of pop culture. Every kid born in the 80’s and 90’s grew up watching it, trying to recreate it somehow. Well, I’ll have this chance for real. It’s every fighter’s dream to do something like this”, he said.

But unlike the movie he ref-erenced, Mafra does not believe in odds favoring one fighter or another. For him, once the bell rings, it’s always 50/50.

“I honestly don’t think I’m the underdog, or that once the cage door closes there’s such a thing as an underdog. If you both made weight, if everything is right for the fight, it’s even”, he stated.

Beating Eldarov and being crowned the world champion for the first time in his profes-sional career would be a mov-ie-ending-like scene for Mafra’s story in Mixed Martial Arts.

And because there will be fans in the attendance of BRAVE CF 46, the first time for the pro-motion since early 2020, Mafra can, maybe, give his own inter-pretation of the final scene of “Rocky 4”, in which Balboa is celebrated by the local crowd.

On Saturday night, he will have a shot at immortality and the chance to carve the same path as his on-screen hero.

F1’s Leclerc tests positive for Covid-19

AFP | London

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc announced yes-

terday that he had tested positive for Covid-19, two days after Formula One was forced to postpone two of next season’s Grands Prix.

“I want to let you know that I have tested positive for Covid-19,” the Mone-gasque driver said on Twit-ter.

“I learned that I have been in contact with a pos-itive case and immediately went into self-isolation... A subsequent test I took has come back positive.”

Leclerc, 23, added that he had “mild symptoms” and was isolating at his home in his native Monaco.

He finished eighth last season after making just two podium finishes in a dread-ful 17-race campaign for Ferrari in which four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel slumped to 13th in the drivers’ standings.

The positive test shouldn’t have any immediate impact on Leclerc’s prospects for the coming season, which doesn’t start until the Bah-rain GP on March 28.

UEFA plans for Euro, Champions League unchanged despite pandemic fearsAFP | London

UEFA is not planning any imminent changes to

the format for the upcoming Champions League knockout stages or to its plans to hold the delayed Euro 2020 this year despite ongoing con-cerns about the coronavirus pandemic and other sporting events being cancelled.

“As far as the Euro is concerned nothing has changed,” a spokesperson for European football’s gov-erning body said. Postponed last year, Euro 2020 is now scheduled to go ahead from June 11 to July 11 this year.

However, even if it does go ahead, it is uncertain wheth-er it will be possible to stage the tournament as planned in 12 cities across 12 differ-ent countries, spread far and wide over the continent.

“Given the health situa-tion, personally I think that the original idea of a compe-tition spread all over Europe has little chance of going ahead,” Dominique Blanc, head of the Swiss Football Association, said in an in-terview with Swiss media this week.

Murray’s Australian Open participation in doubt after positive virus testAFP | London

Andy Murray’s participa-tion in the Australian Open

has been thrown into doubt after it was revealed yester-day he had tested positive for coronavirus.

The British former world number one was due to travel to Australia on one of a series of charter flights laid on by tour-nament organisers but is still isolating at home in London.

It is understood that Murray, apparently in good health, is hoping to be able to arrive in Australia at a later date.

Australian Open organisers wished the 33-year-old a speedy recovery but it was unclear whether he would still have a chance to take part.

“Andy Murray has advised that he has tested positive to Covid-19 and is isolating at home in the UK,” they tweeted.

“Unfortunately this means he will be unable to join the official AO charter flights arriving in Australia in the coming days to go through the quarantine period with the other players.

“The AO fans love Andy, and we know how much he loves competing here in Melbourne and how hard he’d worked for this opportunity.”

The five-time Australian Open runner-up pulled out of last week’s ATP event in Delray

Beach, Florida, as he wanted to “minimise the risks” in the run-up to the year’s first Grand Slam.

Murray, who has slumped to 123rd in the world rankings, was handed a wildcard for the Australian Open which starts on February 8, three weeks later than normal.

The three-time major win-ner is hoping to make his first appearance in Melbourne since the emotional events of 2019, when he revealed the extent of his right hip problem and raised the possibility of imminent re-tirement.

BIC to host first Open Track Day of the new year tomorrow

TDT | Manama

Bahrain International Cir-cuit (BIC) continues its

busy start for 2021 as it hosts the first Open Track Day of the new year tomorrow, from 12 pm to 7pm.

As one of the most popular activities at BIC, Open Track puts the participant right in the heart of the action, as they are able to take their very own car or motorbike along a world-class motorsport fa-cility.

While such an activity helps fulfill the racing dreams of many, Open Track is a non-competitive event that al-

lows drivers to explore their vehicle’s performance within a safe and controlled environ-ment.

Driver/rider etiquette is of ultimate importance, so there is no close or aggressive over-taking. It is done only by in-vitation between corners and driving is monitored, with poor or dangerous manoeu-vres dealt with swiftly by of-ficials.

Saturday’s event will be held along BIC’s 2.554-kilometre Inner Track. The cost to take part is BD79 for the full day and BD52.500 for a half day. There is also an option of a single session for BD21.

BIC hosts action-packed dayBIC set to host racing both on the track and down the drag strip today

• BIC ready for the opening meeting of 2021 Bahrain Drag Racing Championship

TDT | Manama

Bahrain International Cir-cuit (BIC) is set to raise the excitement level to-

day with a full day of high-oc-tane racing both on the track and down the drag strip.

A packed schedule of events kicks off with the region’s long-est-running circuit racing cham-pionship, the BIC 2,000cc Chal-lenge, which will be holding the fourth round of its 2020/2021 season. The spotlight then turns to the strip later in the evening for the highly anticipated open-ing meeting of the 2021 Bahrain Drag Racing Championship, the premier drag racing series in the Middle East.

Leading drivers and crews from Bahrain and across the Gulf will be taking part in both events. All events at BIC are currently being held without spectators, with participant and crew access only over the week-end.

The fight for all-important points and podium places in the 2,000cc Challenge is set to heat up as the season reaches its mid-way point. Racing will be tak-ing place along BIC’s 2.554-kilo-metre Oasis Track.

The day’s programme begins at 10.05am with a 30-minute Practice, followed at 11.15pm by

Qualifying, also set for a 30-min-ute duration. Race one will then be held over 12 laps starting at 12.43pm, which will set the stage for the day’s second race flag-ging off at 2.13pm. It will also be held over 12 laps. Podium ceremonies will take place after each sprint.

Top participants Raed Raffii (Honda S2000) and Raed Him-mo (Honda Civic) will be look-ing to continue from where they left off in the previous round last week, when they each came away with a race victory.

They are both competing in the series’ Pro class, where they are expected to face stiff com-petition from the likes of for-mer champions Shaikh Salman bin Isa bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (Honda Civic), Shaikh Hamad bin Isa bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (Honda Civic) and Tareq Al Ta-jer (Ford Focus), as well as from Nasser Al Alawi (Honda S2000).

Amongst the Novice class

runners, Majed Himmo (Hon-da Civic) and Ali Al Mansoori (Honda Civic) were the winners in the last round and they are hoping to maintain their mo-mentum.

Others who will be aiming to make a challenge are lady driv-ers Martyna Al Qassab (Acu-ra DC5) and Wiebke Buelow (Honda Civic), Ramzi Al Qassab (Acura DC5), Andreas Buelow (Honda Civic), Giovanni Salerno (Ford Focus), Ali Toblani (Hon-da Civic) and Khalid Al Rayyes
