Knowing Is Half The Battle

*I felt like this should be some kind of introduction ultimately making the point that ADEQUATE, AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE IS AVAILABLE. I can help

write it if you want – you just need to tell me what to say.

Important Terms

(HEALTH CARE) PROVIDERS - this is the professional you see for any of your medical, dental and/or vision needs (i.e. Primary Physician, Dentist, Optometrist).

PREMIUM - the amount of money you pay for your medical and/or dental insurance only.

CO-PAY - the amount you are expected to pay when visiting your provider for services.

DEDUCTIBLE - this is an amount you are expected to pay out of pocket before some of your insurance coverages kick in. this is in addition to the premium you pay for the coverage.

BENEFITS SUMMARY - this is a report specific to you only which outlines your specific coverages. this is very important because every plan is different.

Red Flags1) the advertisement uses the words discount vs. actual coverage. often times you will see companies advertising your receiving doctor visits at a reduced rate or prescriptions & vision exams at a discount. this is exactly what you are paying for....an opportunity to save maybe 10-25% of what you are expected to pay at the time of your visit. this is not insurance coverage but a discount program.

2) if the quote for insurance is unbelievably lower than a comparable plan, it is probably too good to be true. make sure to read the fine print before signing anything.

3) the literature says you will be paying membership fees and/or dues and not an actual premium.

Supplement Your Coverage

Remember, every plan is different. You have the option of defining the plan more suitable to you. What you need or don’t need will determine how much you pay. Knowing this & understanding the plan specifics will help you supplement your coverage which in turns supplements your cost.

Here are a few items you definitely want to consider....

1) Are you a single male? If so, no need to purchase maternity coverage.

2) Are you a female considering have children in the very near future? If so, you want to make sure you have maternity coverage.

3) Do you have any health issues that requires you to take meds on a regular basis? If so, you want to make sure you have a prescription plan.

4) Do you wear eyeglasses or contact lenses? If so, you may want to consider having vision coverage in your plan.
