Hello from the Southwest Section of Indiana!

Winter Rendezvous was great. If you were unable to attend, go to the Indiana District Web-site or Face book page. The Pictures speak for them self. After seeing the pictures, we know you will attend Spring Wing and next Year’s Winter Rendezvous.

We would like to thank everybody for bringing Items for the Silent Auction.

It was wonderful spending time with old and new GWRRA Friends and let’s not forgets their Puppies.

We are ADD’s for some wonderful Chapters D, M, O and Z. So great to see they had a wonderful time and participated in Seminars, Games, Challenges and more. Can’t wait to attend, some of their Gatherings.

Remember Spring Wing is just around the corner with another opportunity to spend time with our GWRRA family once again. This year’s theme is “A Little Bit of Country”.

So start planning to come and have fun again.

As Debbie and I have been out traveling to other chapters, we’re definitely getting the vibe of bears awaking up after a long winter’s hibernation. The chapters are having ride planning meetings, making plans for Spring Wing Warm Up, and solidifying their other activities for the soon to be here riding season. Snow birds are coming home to roost. It reminds me as a kid making up my Christmas list and not being able to wait for Santa. I hope the predictions of a warmer than normal next few months means we can get riding sooner! I’m getting tired of driving to gatherings and events!

As you’re getting set to pull your bikes out of the depths of storage, how bout planning to attend an early riding course so you can keep up with your trusty steed? Indiana has almost 10 members who have stepped up to be new riding course instructors and our first course presentations are TRC 24 April and ARC 15 May. Both at the Columbus airport. Get signed up and show your appreciation to these new instructors who have given up a lot of their time preparing for these classes.

As Debbie and I have been visiting chapters, we gotten a lot of positive feedback on Winter Rendezvous. Those who attended had a great time and those who didn’t go have already started to talk about next year. The NE Chapters had great attendance and got a lot of recognition. We had quarterly newsletter winners, table decoration winners, recruiter of the year winner, multiple contest participants, and received appreciation awards for helping out. The success this winter is also causing a great buzz for Spring Wing Warm Up. The location coupled with the great list of activities planned is making SWWU the go to destination in May.

Until next month!

Hello All

This month I am going to have to start on a sad note. Motorcycling and primarily The Ride for Kids (RFK) in support of The Pediatrics Brain Tumor Foundation has lost one of its biggest advocates. Many of us especially in the northern half of Indiana knew Bobby Newman very well. He rode or drove to visit as many motorcycle chapters, clubs, dealers and any other group that would listen to him speak in support of the RFK. The man was relentless in soliciting for donations and rider support for the annual ride. He would show up at a chapter gathering and ask for motorcyclist to come and ride in the event which had a profound effect on me. Connie & I try not to miss the yearly ride and we both volunteer to work at registration at the Northern Indiana Ride for Kids. This year’s ride will be on June 26th leaving from Pinhook Park in South Bend, IN. Come and join in the ride and in remembrance of Bobby, he will be greatly missed, and our condolences go out to his family.

March is here and it won’t be long before riding season starts. There are many events to attend and with warm weather the riding should be fantastic. Connie and I are looking forward to attending Spring Wing Warm-Up in Park County this year. It will be a great time with all the roads to ride and of course all the covered bridges to see, mark your calendar for May 19 to 21 and have fun. For us in the northern half of Indiana the Region D Rally will be close this year, it will be held in Coldwater MI. on July 28 to 30, come and have a good time riding and visiting with other members from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. You could also attend the Ohio Rally June 16 to 18 and the Michigan Rally August 5 to 6. And of course Wing Ding, August 31 to September 3, which will again be in Billings MT. this year, what a great place to ride to, and see some historical sights on the way. You may want to check the schedule in Indiana on Wings to see other National, Regional, District and Chapter events. Get out and have a good time.

Till next time ride often and ride safe.

March has always been the magical month when weather things actually begin to happen in Indiana and when motorcyclists start looking forward to being able to get out and ride. The winter has already provided so many unexpected riding opportunities but it’s still the sunshine, warmth, and long days that so many of us are anxious to experience again.

Karen and I were able to go to winter rallies in Ohio and Indiana during February and we were reminded again of how it’s the people who make each event the fun it is. All the planning in the world is useless unless the people with fun attitudes show up to make things happen. Winter Rendezvous was the perfect exact example of what I’m talking about.

Winter Rendezvous as just plain fun and I’m not going to review it in detail. If you were there, you know. If you missed it, you missed a very good time. The Indiana District Team, even with so many new people doing things they had never been responsible for before, did an excellent job of planning and scheduling things everyone could enjoy. If you missed it all this year, you’ll have another opportunity to join in the fun next year.

I want to say thank you to the six chapters of central Indiana who all had members attend Winter Rendezvous. It makes an ADD proud to know every chapter he looks over was there to participate.

The next big Indiana event will be Spring Wing Warm Up. It will be in a new location in Park County, the covered bridge capital of the world. It’s an area of beautiful country and the Indiana team will be looking for those sites that no one should miss while they’re in the area. Many people are happy to ride roads on their Goldwings and make few stops between their beginning point and destination. I, on the other hand, am in the group who is always ready to stop, explore, learn about, and enjoy the little things along the way. Something tells me that I’ll be able to find those little things as I research the area and plan to do some riding during Spring Wing.

The upcoming riding season is an opportunity for GWRRA members to share news about our group. The two things that might get the attention of our motorcycle friends who don’t know much about us just might be our Goldwings and the way we dress. I don’t know if you’re noticed or not, but a lot of people don’t think twice about wearing a lot of HD clothes and they certainly don’t apologize for doing so. I have personally found that we meet many people who won’t hesitate to ask about just what GWRRA is. Such questions open the door for explaining, answering questions, and even bragging a little about the fun we have. Our group is a great product that we should never hesitate to try and sell to others. We should wear our Goldwing shirts and jackets with pride.

Don’t forget that we can get rusty with our riding skills over the winter and we need to take out time getting back into the habit of safe riding. That’s important because we do want to see you all down the road sometime soon.

Hello everyone!

It’s hard to believe we are well into February already. And we were able to ride the bike on our dinner ride! That makes you anxious for spring time! Winter will be over before we know it, but I guess Mother Nature still has some nasty weather planned for northern Indiana this week. Oh well, we have had it pretty easy this year.

Winter Rendezvous was a great success! Jay and I want to thank everyone who helped make it such a fun weekend! And we want to thank the trainers who presented seminars and for all those who attended the seminars. Those are a very important part of the rallies and it is good to see so many interested in them. And now on to Spring Wing Warmup!!

Jay and I will be assisting Kathleen Heibel, Region D Trainer, with the OCP training in Coldwater MI on March 6. This will be a new experience for us and we are looking forward to it. It looks like we will have a large class too.

Happy riding to all and see you soon!

IndianaCouple of the Year

Hello fellow Gold wingers. Winter Rendezvous has come and gone and this will be the last article we will be writing for the Indiana District Newsletter. As the Couple of the Year for 2015 we will be stepping back into Chapter life as just another member. But it will not be a bad move as we love Chapter A2 and will be there when they need us to help with any undertakings that the chapter will engage in.

We were honored that the chapter picked us for their COY for 2104 and were more than honored when we were selected as the District Couple for 2015. We enjoyed the chapter visits that we went to and promoted the Couple of the Year program. This is a worthwhile program that recognizes couples for what they bring to their chapter. We felt that if they honored us this way then the best thing is that we honor them by participating in the COY selection process at Winter Rendezvous and at the Region D rally where we participated with the couples from Michigan and Ohio. You make so many new friends at these events and the friendship will live long after. We are blessed and have had a wonderful time this year. Our wish is for other couples in the future think about going on in GWRRA and do the selection process as many people have done in the past. It would be great to see a lot of couples on stage telling about themselves and their experience in GWRRA and riding their motorcycles. Don’t worry about winning or losing but just have FUN.

This year we only had 2 couples in the selection but they were both fantastic in their speeches. This year’s runner up was Ron and Sandy Mendenhall of Parkersburg IN. and members Chapter A2 in Lebanon. They will always be Chapter Couple of the Year for 2015; no one else will hold this title.

The Indiana District Couple of the Year for 2016 is Ray and Melinda Faber of Crawfordsville IN. and members of Chapter K in Lafayette IN. Ray and Melinda told us early on that they were going to participate in the selection process at Winter Rendezvous. But after they told us this they were asked to become the new District Directors for Indiana and they accepted this position and were sworn in at Winter Rendezvous. They now wear two hats for Indiana but I think they will do well in both positions.

Thanks for the memories and we will still be around.

Educators

To all of our fellow GWRRA members and educators, Chris and I would like to say hello. We are very excited to be your new District Educators. We are really looking forward to meeting all of you over the next few months. We are very fortunate to have such a great group of educators in Indiana. We are also truly blessed to have such wonderful assistants, Dennis and Debbie Juncker, and Mike and Joyce Nelson, working with us. Please don’t hesitate to let any of us know if you need anything or if we can help in any way. We had a really good time at Winter Rendezvous this year. There were 242 members in attendance! We offered six different Rider Ed seminars at WR and the turnout was very good, we had 115 members participate in the Rider Ed seminars!

We want to say thank you to all of the members and Chapter Educators that stopped by the Rider Ed booth to say hello. It was great to be able to puts some names and faces together. We had a chance to meet a lot of new people too.

I would like to let you know that we still have several openings left for the upcoming TRC class April 24, 2016 as well as the ARC class May 15, 2016. Both classes are being held at the Columbus Indiana Airport. Please contact your Chapter Educators for registration forms. If you or any of your fellow chapter members are interested in becoming a Rider Coach, we still have openings in the TRC and ARC rider coach classes. Please give me a call or drop me an email and I will contact you with the application for those classes. We can hardly wait for some warm weather so that we can start visiting as many of the chapters as we can. We look forward to seeing you soon.
