CORRESPONDENCE CLASSES
Indiana University School of Continuing Studies
- variety of courses
- students complete work packets
- take one or two supervised exams (may be administered at the high school)
Good for students who can’t work a course or credit into their school day
Good for courses the high school doesn’t offer
INDIANA UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL
HS CREDIT BELOW GRADE 9
Students may earn HS credit for work before grade 9 provided:
1. The course is equivalent to its HS counterpart
(meets same state standards)
2. Grades are recorded on the HS transcript
3. Grades are included in the HS GPA
4. Grade policies are consistent in the HS and MS
7 SEMESTER WAIVER
Students must be in school for 7 semesters
Schools may waive the 7th semester if
- failure to waive would prevent graduation
- student would have qualified for a gifted / talented
• and the student has been accepted and plans to attend a postsecondary school
• and the student has a contract with and plans to enlist in the military
HOME SCHOOLING
Indiana law requires
- report enrollment in home school to DOE
- 180 days of instruction
- attendance records
(public superintendents may verify)
- instruction equivalent to public schools
Home schools are exempt from curriculum requirements
When the home-schooled child returns
- review committee is formed
- parents submit test results, attendance records & curriculum
- student takes end-of-course exams to determine mastery
HS FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS
How to evaluate the foreign transcript
- student’s responsibility to have transcript translated
- sending school must designate
• the content covered in the course
the level of mastery:
excellent, good, average, poor, unsatisfactory
total number of minutes in the class
(4,500 min = 1 credit)
May earn a high school diploma if Indiana’s graduation requirements are met
English Language Proficiency Test (College Board) – tests understanding of spoken and written language
