• National Grid planned in a phased manner• Phase-I envisaged Interconnection of Regional Grids
through HVDC Back-to-Back links having cumulative capacity of 5000 MW has been completed in 2002
• Present inter regional capacity is 9500 MW• It is envisaged to have 37,000 MW inter regional
capacity by 2012 comprising of high capacity HVDC and HVAC lines (both 765kV and 400kV) and 50,000MW by 2016
Development of National Grid
• To conserve the Right-of-Way while meeting the power transfer requirement of immediate as well as long-term – Technology adopted for progressive enhancement of
transmission capacity of same Tr. corridor through –• High capacity 400kV (quad) lines• 800kV EHVAC line initially operated at 400kV• High capacity 800kV HVDC systems initially operated at
600kV• Series compensation and TCSC• High temperature endurance conductor like INVAR• Multi-ckt. line and compact towers (ROW for 800kV line 85 m to 64 m)
– Optimal utilisation of existing infrastructure through –• Series Compensation• Uprating/Upgrading of lines• Enhancement of thermal capacity of line (75 -850 /950 C)

HVDC bipole of 6000 MW, +800 kV is being explored.
