Dear Friends,

Can we dare to dream of a world where cancer is no longer feared?Where it’s a disease that has acure?Where the majority are survivors and not victims. Yes, we can. The Indian Cancer Society withrenewedvigourandzealisstrivingtoturnthisdreamintoareality.

As India’s most respected NGO in the cancer space for the past 65 years, we play an active role increating awareness and encouraging early detection among themasses. Facilitating cure, rehabilitationfortheunderprivilegedpatientsandofferingsupporttosurvivorshasalwaysbeenourareaoffocus.

It is time now to scale up our activities, set new goals for 2020. A national footprint should see usmanning 100 mobile detection vans throughout the country creating cancer awareness through filmsdeveloped on key cancers in the regional languages and providing early detection at your doorstep.Theyouthofourcountrymust leadthechangeofmindsettowardsthisdreadeddiseasethroughsocialmediaandevents.RaisingRs100crores fordisbursement through theCancerCureFundwillmake thelife-savingtreatmentavailabletomanyofthosewhosimplycannotaffordit.

To this end, in the past one year, we have produced 4 films in 7 languages raising awareness andencouraging early detection. Students, young professionals and matinee idol - Varun Dhawan - havebeen enrolled to be part of our mission. CSR funding has enabled us to add a new state-of-the-artmobilemedicalunitdetectionvan,currentlyunderfabrication,toincreaseourreachintheruralareas.

To further increase the impact of our Cancer Cure Fund, in collaboration with HDFC AMC, we haveadded 7 hospitals to our empanelled list, which now totals 14 across India. Since its establishment in2011 we have sanctioned 87.13 crores, to fund the treatment of 3418 patients.We have now nearlyquadrupled our disbursements with the enhanced new fund and CSR support from HDFC. In fact,this dimension of the ICS success story has evoked aHarvard Business School case study. ICS has alsoreorganized its operating structure by identifying 4 core areas – Awareness & Screening, Cancer Cure,Cancer Registry responsible for research and knowledge, and Rehabilitation and Survivorship, whichincludestheUgam–supportgroupofchildhoodcancersurvivors.

IntegratedplanningandexecutionwithourBranchesisthekeytohelprealizethisdream.

The need of the hour is to come together from all walks of life, pool in our resources to battle thisdisease and emerge victorious. We seek active support and assistance from individual donors, trusts,the corporate world, medical fraternity, hospitals, the government, health ministry, well-wishers,stakeholdersandallrelatedNGOstohelpscale-upouractivities.

Thenext5yearswillhelpICStakethegiantleaptorealizethisdream.

ABOUT INDIAN CANCER SOCIETY

Indian Cancer Societywas established in 1951 by Dr. D.J. Jussawalla andMr. Naval Tata as India’s first

voluntary, non-profit, national organization for Awareness, Screening, Cure and Survivorship of those

affectedwiththisdisease.

Indian Cancer Society has been doing sterling work in fighting cancer across India. It has been and

continues to be the beacon of hope for thousands of our poor cancer affected brethren. The extent

of help required is phenomenal. The society is entirely dependent on public support for its various

activities including for financing the treatment and rehabilitation of cancer patients and for spreading

thecancerawarenessofitsearlydetection.

encouraging regular checkups for early detection increasing the chances of cure and economic

IndianCancerSocietyconductscancerawarenesscamps inschool,colleges,corporateoffices,slumandruralareasonapanIndialevel.

At these camps, a trained ICS representative presents short films and a talk on the lead cancers likecervical, breast, oral and lung. The films explain what is cancer and its causes, symptoms and thelifestyle changes required to protect oneself against cancer. These camps are conducted free or at aminimalcost.

Cancer is a disease that does not discriminate.Having all the characteristics of a lifestyle diseaseit is quite likely to affect those living in stressful urban environment with little or no physical activityand irregular diet. Dedicated to the cause of Cancer Control, ICS conducts cancer awareness talks incorporates to cater to theUrbanPopulation. Twelve such talkswere conducted in the year 2016-17 invariouscorporatessuchasUTI,MovenpickHotels,OmnicomgroupandCapgeminitonameafew.

Ganpati Festival Anti-Tobacco Campaign :

On the auspicious occasionofGanpati Festival, IndianCancer Society is launched amajor anti-tobaccodrivewithaviewtoencourageandmotivatepeopletogiveupconsumingtobacco inanyform.Cancercaused due to tobacco consumption is the highest killer in India. Almost 40% of the cancers detectedeach year are tobacco related. ICS coined a catchy slogan “Chala Tambaku Soduya, Ganapati BappaMorya”andbannerswiththissloganwereputupatprominentMandalsduringthefestivalin2016.Thiscampaignisalsobeingpromotedaggressivelythroughsocialmedia.

Impact: Banners with this slogan were displayed at 35 mandals and 102 Police Stations across Mumbai, a film made especially for social media promotion received 1.25L views.

RelayForLife isacommunitysensitizationprogram,wherewemake thecommunity

aware about cancer, its early detection and prevention. It is also a community

based fundraisingevent; to raise themuchneeded funds forunderprivilegedcancer

patients.

TheRelayForLifeteams,campoutovernightandtaketurnswalkingorrunningaroundatrackorpath

attheirschool.Eventsare12hours long,andsince,Cancerneversleeps,eachteamisaskedtohaveat

leastoneparticipantonthetrack,duringtheentireevent.

RelayForLifecomprisesofanopeningceremony,followedbythesurvivorslap,theLuminariaceremony

andtheclosingceremony.Theemotionallychargedluminariaceremonyremembersthoselosttocancer.

Indian Cancer Society strongly believes that “Cancer is curable, when detected early.” Awarenessfollowed by early detection improves the chances of battling this dreaded disease. Early diagnosis ofcancer has been the core objective of ourMobile Cancer Screening Camps and the Cancer ScreeningCentreatPeddarRoad,Mumbai.

Mumbai Police :ICS took a step towards protecting our protectors,we conducted a series of camps forMumbai Policewhere cancer screening was conduted for the entire police work force of Mumbai in a period of sixmonths. TheMumbai Policewere very supportiveof this campaign, the aimofwhichwas to inculcatehealthdirectedbehaviourinthem.

World Cancer DayThe Screening unit of Indian Cancer Society strives to provide services in the areaswhere accessibilityto health care is poor. One such population is the tribal population living in the outskirts ofMumbai.OntheoccasionofWorldCancerDay,IndianCancerSocietyconductedaspecialcampforTribalwomenlivinginKalamboli,NaviMumbai.


International Women’s DayThe Indian Cancer Society believes that empowerment of women is the key to their better health.With this objective in mind we conducted a series of screening camps exclusively for women. Thesecampsnotonlyproviedthemthemuchneededservicebutalsocreatedawarenessforcommoncancersaffecting women. Through our activities, we empowered them enough to take the matters of theirhealthintheirownhandsandbeboldenoughtoRiseAgainstCancer!


Blind Persons AssociationTheWorld HealthOrganization upholds the concept of Health for All, whichmeans that right to goodhealthmustbeavailabletoeachaneveryindividualofthesociety.ForthisreasonIndianCancerSocietyextends itsservices topeoplewithspecialneedsaswell.TwoCampswereconducted forBlindPersonsinassociationwithManavSevareliefTrust.

CANCER CURE

Our mission:Toofferemotionalsupportandmedicalaidtocancerpatients

Cancer Cure Fund

Cancer Cure Fund (CCF) is a flagship project of ICS which provides financial aid for treatment tounderprivileged cancer patients. This project provides financial aid up to Rs. 4 lacs per patientto undergo treatment and emerge a victor. This project has transformed the lives of over 2500underprivilegedcancerpatientsacrossthecountry,manyofwhomhavecompletedtheirtreatmentandreturnedtoproductivelifeonceagain.

Thisproject isunique,firstof its kind initiativeof ICS in collaborationwithHDFCAMCLtd. In February2011, HDFC AMC launched a Debt Mutual fund which gave the investors an option to donate50% or 100% of their dividend income from this mutual fund to ICS to fund the treatment cost forunderprivilegedcancerpatients.

InFY2016-17,ICSCCFreceiveddonationsaggregatingtoRs.10.12croresfromover2500investorsfromtheDebtfund.Inaddition,HDFCAMCalsocontributedRs.11.86croresastheirCSRcontribution.

ICS is grateful to eachof those2500 investors of this fundwhohavedonated their income to ICS andhavehelped transform the livesof thesepatients through theCCFProject. ICSwouldalso like toplaceonrecorditsgratitudetoHDFCAMCforlaunchingthisuniqueproductthathasenabledICStoraisethefundsrequiredforthisproject.

ICShasimplementedthisatapanIndialevelandwearepleasedtoreportthat80%ofthebeneficiariesarelessthan30yearsofage.

LookingatthesuccessoftheprojectothercorporatesuchasSBIFoundation,UnionBankof Indiahavealsocontributed,takingthetotaldonationofFY16-17toRs.23.77crore.

Navin Bhuva

16 year old Navin Bhuva from Porbandar, Gujarat was pursuing his studieswith the aim becoming anengineer one day. He enjoyed playing with his friends in his free time, until one day when he hadsevere joint pain and was difficult for him to walk or travel to his college. Local doctor suggested CTandBonescan,afterwhichhewasdiagnosedwithOsteosarcoma,a typeofBonecancer. ‘Allmyhopeshad trashed. I had only heard about cancer but never thought I would be the victim. I doubt if I willever be able to run again’,were his thoughts.Navinwas a Fighter andwanted to achieve his dreams.His parents took him to Kailash Cancer Hospital, Goraj, Gujarat. His initial treatment started with themonetarysupportfromrelativesandfriends.Butcontinuingthetreatmentwasdifficultastheycouldn’tafford the remaining treatmentof surgeryandprosthesiswhichwascostingaround2.4 lacs. ‘Arrangingthisamountforadailywagerlikeme,wasnexttoimpossible.Wehadalmostdecidedtodiscontinuethetreatmentandgoback tovillage,when the socialworkerof thehospital, toldusabout ICCF.Theysaidthatmyson’scasehasbeenapprovedbyICSandtheywouldbetakingcareofhistreatmentcost.Iwasoverjoyedandcouldn’tbelieve inmyfortune’saidNavin’sfather.Navinnow17years, foughtthebattleofcancerandhasappeared forhis12thexams thisyear. ‘ICCFmayhavehelpedmanypatients likemebutIwillalwaysbethankfultothemas,whenallthedoorswerecloseditwasICCFwhohelpedmeandnowIcanpursuemydreamsofbecominganengineer’,saysNavinwithabrightsmileonhisface.

GrandmaNavaneetham,58yearsold today liveshappilywithher13grandchildren!But thiswasn’t thesituationayearback,whenshewasdiagnosedwithBreastcancer.Shefeelshardshipishername.When11,shebecameavictimofchildmarriageandmarrieda35yearoldmanashissecondwife.Thisdidn’tstopherfrombeingagoodwife.Sheraisedher4kidsandtriedtofulillalltheirneeds.Shecouldn’tgether childhood back butwas happywith her family, till the time she complained about her pain in thebreast. The local clinic detected a lump in her left breast and diagnosed it as amalignant tumor. HerfamilyinsistedhertovisitCMC,Velloreandtheyweregladthattheywentthere,astheygottreatmentassistancefromICCFof Rs.1lac. ‘Ican’tstopthankinggodforsavingmymother. ICCFhasbeenaboontoneedypeoplelikeus.IsmilewhenIseemymotherplayingwithmychildren’,saysherelderson.

Dr. Arun Kurkure Initiation and Treatment Fund AKITF isanemergency fundingprojectof IndianCancerSociety,which takescareof thediagnostic testsandgives initialtreatmentfundingtounderprivilegedpoorcancerpatients.Thisprojectwasintroducedtoreducethedroprateofpatientsfromstarting/postponingthetreatmentornotundergoingtestsduetoaffordability.

Initiation Fund: This fund is given to underprivileged patientswho are unable to afford the initial costsofdiagnosisattheCancerHospital.AnamountofRs.15,000/-isgiventothehospitalsothatthepatientcan undergo all the required initial tests at the hospital for their diagnosis. The objective is to enablethemtodothevariousteststodeterminethediagnosis.Ifthisisnotdone,theymaygobackhomeonlyto return to the hospital with the cancer in an advanced state.

Treatment Fund: This fund is given to underprivileged patients so that certain part of their cancertreatment costs gets covered.An amountof Rs. 5,000or 10,000/- is given after the completionof theduediligenceprocessdonebyour socialworkers.Wehope thatby fundingapartof the treatment, itwillgivethemtimetoseekforotherfundingresources.

Personal Background and Impact

Master. Nitesh Bhola Rana is a 6 year oldboy from Jharkhand. His father is a laborerand earns monthly income of Rs. 8000/-There are four members in his family andtheirfinancialconditionisquitepoor.

Nitesh’s fever was not reducing for morethan15daysandhencehis father tookhimtoabiggerhospital inRanchi.Hewasgiven2bottleofbloodandafterhisbloodsamplewastested,hewasdiagnosedwithatypeof

bloodcancer.ThehospitalreferredthemtoTataMemorialHospital (TMH).TMHsocialworkersentthiscasetoICSandafteraquickduediligencewegavethemRs.15,000/-fortheinitialtest.Niteshwasthendiagnosed with Pre B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and immediately started his treatment. He hascompleted2cyclesofchemotherapy.HoweverNiteshhasdevelopedinfectionsandhencehis3rdchemohas been postponed. The TMH social workersmeanwhile are arranging for his funding of the balancetreatmentcost.

Mr. Dipesh Nagandhi, 46 year old fromMumbai works as a Security guard andearns monthly income of Rs. 3000/-. He isthebreadwinnerofhisfamilycomprisingoffivemembers.

One day he developed severe pain in hisstomach. The local doctor on sonographydetected lump and advised him to go toTataMemorialHospital(TMH).

The reports diagnosed him to be sufferingfrom Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Post diagnoses,TMH informed him that his total cost of treatment would be about Rs 40,000. This treatment costincluded chemotherapy and supportive medicines. Dipesh approached ICS for help and receivedan amount of Rs 10,000/- to start his treatment.With this amount his first chemo was done and hereceivedimmediaterelief.Further,ICShasensuredthatthebalancetreatmentcostwillbetakencarebyTMHsocialworkers.

Ms.JayaKumari,30yearsoldfromBhagalpur,Bihar,comesfromapoorfamily.Herhusbandworksasalaborer.ShewasdiagnosedwithCaBreastandthedoctorsatTataMemorialHospitalhadsuggestedtogowithTargetTherapywhichwouldcostaboutRs.4lacs.

Howeverthefamilydecidedtoquitthetreatmentastheycouldn’taffordthecostofthetreatment. ICSafterscrutinizing thecasedecided to refer toSRTT,where thecasegotsanctioned. Jayastartedoffhertreatment and is currently onmaintenance treatment and is very thankful to ICS that they helpedherwhen required.

Mr.TulsiSingh35yearsold is fromBihar.Hisbackground isofa farmerandearnsRs.40kannually.Hewas diagnosedwith Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of blood cancer and the doctors from TataMemorialHospital,gaveanappoxcostestimateofRs.6lacsfortreatment.

ICS picked his case and decided to refer to SRTTwhere he got a sanction of Rs. 2.5 lacs. The balanceamountoftreatmentcostwastakencarebyothertrustsatthehospital.Becauseofthishelp,Tulsiwasabletocompletehistreatmentandisnowonhisfollowup.HeisverythankfultoICSandsaysbecauseofthetimelyhelpfromICS,heisabletoleadanormallifewithhisfamily.

SELF RELIANT SURVIVOR PROJECT supported by GSK

Our mission: To help the families to become self reliant

CancerpatientscometoMumbai fromallover thecountry for treatmentatTMH.Formanyof them itisa lifeofhardshipwithnoplacetostayandnomeansofsustenance.TheSelfReliantSurvivorProjectof ICS supported byGSK helps such families to livewith dignity and to learn a new skill for earning alivelihood.

Patientsortheirdependentsaretrainedintailoringforuptosixmonths.Thisenablesthemtoreturntotheir villageswithanewsourceof income for the family.During the training theyareprovidedadailystipend,meals, reimbursement of accommodation and travel expenses, food supplements and rationsfor themonth. The biggest gain is to be able to livewith dignitywhile the patient is under treatmentandtolearnanewskill.

CANCER SURVIVORSHIP

ICS has been rehabilitating cancer survivors through its survivorship program. Project PICASSO(Partnership inCancerSurvivorshipOptimization),was launchedby ICS inpartnershipwithHES InfraPvtLtdundertheirCSRactivity.ICShascreatedamoduletobeimplementedatcancerhospitalsinMumbaiinitsfirstphase.Inthefirstphase,thefocuswouldbeoneducationalandvocationalissuesofchildhoodandyoungcancersurvivorsfollowingwhichICSmayrolloutthemoduletoadultcancersurvivors.

The intent of Survivorship program is to strengthen the care connections and co-ordinationof servicesfor cancer survivors toensure that continuing careneedsaremetduring the survivorshipphaseof thecancer.

UGAM UGAMisasupportgroupofchildhoodcancersurvivorstheyoungestunitof(ICS)underitssurvivorshipprogram. UGAM means “To Rise”, underscoring the determination of childhood cancer survivors, torise above all obstacles in life& be VICTORS. Ugamwas launched in 2009 on the first Sunday of Junecelebrated as Cancer Survivors Day across the world as a mark of celebration of life. More than 250survivorsareregisteredatUgamfromitsinception.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

ChildhoodCancerSurvivorsmorethan14yearsofageandmorethan2yearsfromcompletionofcancertherapy with disease free status and registered at ACT(After completion of Therapy) Clinics of TataMemorialHospital (TMH) .Ugamisexpanding itswingsto includesurvivorsfromACTclinicofpediatricunits at other hospitals.

• Youth Development Modules By Tata strive/Edubridge:

Ugamorganized anOrientation session for the benefit of young cancer survivors on Sunday 26thMarch. It was a TataStrive initiative with the objective of reintegrating survivors into society byrebuilding their confidence and enabling them to resume normal workinglives. Nikhil Nair,ICsVolunteer, worked out the proposal for Ugam through Edubridge Learning (training partner ofTatastrive). 45 young cancer survivors attended the program. The first batch of BPO course hasstartedfromMay2017atMahatmaPhuleCollegefor10ugammemberswhowillbeplacedatjobsafteratrainingof6weeks.

• NEW INDIA ASSURANCE

TheICSCancerInsuranceSchemewasthefirstCancerInsuranceSchemeinIndia, launchedin1985.Itcontinuestobepopularandhasreceivedgoodpatronageduringtheyear.

During2016-17,35newmembersregisteredfortheICSCancerInsuranceScheme.

Members can opt for Cancer Insurance coverage of Rs. 50,000/- or Rs. 2 lakhs at very nominalpremiums.ThisschemeisimplementedincollaborationwiththeNewIndiaAssuranceCo.Ltd.

World No Tobacco Day – This eventwas held on 21st April, at Navy Children School. The formatwasa skit competition, postermaking. The topicwas “ Plain packaging” and tomake the youth give deepthoughttotheillsoftobaccoandtomakethemawareofahealthierlifestyle..Thechildrenwereinvitedto send in posters on the subject /make idealmodels of tobacco productswith pictorialwarnings.On21st April the posters were judged at Naval Children school More than 100 posters were put up byMercerandICSvolunteersonthewalls(andgallery)oftheauditorium.Annual seminar – CancerSahyogorganisedtheirannualseminaron16thOctober,atMulti-PurposeHall.Thetopicofdiscussionwas‘ImprovingQualityofLife-TheRoleofPalliativeCare’.

Survivors’ day – Survivor’s Day was celebrated on 11 February, 2017 at Palika Park Connaught Place,It was a joyous Celebration of Life with all the Survivors, Volunteers, and the general public. YoungVolunteersfromMercerFinancialServicesbroughtinthecrowdswitharousingFlashMob.

Drive against Cancer – Golf Tournament- 30th September 2016Itwasorganisedby the LadiesCommitteeofDelhiGolfClub for ICSat theDelhiGolfClub.This year itwas a half day Tournament which started early and ended with a late lunch. 100 participants played& joined the Prize Distribution..We had very attractive prizes kind courtesyMakeMy Tripwhich gavevouchersfortravelasprizes.

As always, the Defence Services gave us full support and Admiral Sunil Lanba Chief of the Naval Stafftee’dofftheTournament.

Relay for Life 2016: Event started with an inauguration and release of balloons by cancer survivorsand ICS volunteers including Mrs. Aditi Misra (Principal, DPS) and teachers. “Relay for Life” as a partof Rise against Cancer hadmultiple activities in a relay form– Cyclothon, survivors celebration, schoolband performance, relay laps. Staff, students and the ICS volunteers participated in these laps.Thehighlightwasthateachandeverychildintheschoolparticipated.AwarenessworkshoponAntiTobaccowas conducted by Dr. Jyoti Wadhwa (Medanta) and Dr. Kabra (Fortis). Preventive Screening was alsoconductedforparentsandsupportstaff.Over120peoplewerescreenedthatday.
