Dr. Atul C. Mehta named among the Giants of Chest Medicine
On January 19, 2019, members of the FICA along with the Indian community and friends celebrated India’s 70th Republic Day. Braving heavy snowfalls, about 300 people, many of them in glittering Indian attire, made their way to the Embassy Suites in Independence for dinner and entertainment. Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, CEO and President of the Cleveland Clinic, was the Chief Guest for the evening.
Dr. Mihaljevic, a native of Croatia, congratulated the Indian community on their service in the health field. He spoke about the contribution and influence of Indian physicians and health care professionals. He traced the history of the first Indian visiting the Clinic back to 1928, the first Indian doctor at the Clinic, and the first and only Cricket Club at the Clinic. (See article on page 3)
The American National Anthem was sung by Tanmayee Dixit and the Indian National Anthem by Pranjali Deshpande. FICA President Ritu Mahna thanked the numerous sponsors, donors

Editor’s NoteCelebrating our Identity It’s already February…we have been preoccupied with the icy winds and snow days. It is part of living in Cleveland, and it’s what makes us tougher!
This January, the community gathered in its usual festive way, to celebrate India’s Republic Day. Many families stay away, while others are unaware of the event they are missing out on. I made sure I took my children at least once for the celebration. I wanted them to see the patriotism, to hear the Indian National Anthem and the speeches, to watch traditional and Bollywood dances, enjoy the food, and admire the ethnic clothes. Yes, we do celebrate a dual identity.
For those of us who can take a vacation in India at this time, the warm weather provides a respite from the biting cold winds of North East Ohio. This year my family and I had a chance to visit Goa, often called “the Rome of the East” because of its numerous churches built by the Portugese. We relaxed on the warm sands of the beaches along with tourists from Russia and Germany, sampling local fish and the spicy cuisine. We visited a Spice Farm and museums that preserved the old lifestyle. While sipping on cold local brews, Cleveland seemed very, very far away. Yes, we do live in two different worlds. Let’s celebrate both those worlds! Please send us your feedback and ideas for stories.Best wishes for the year ahead!

Chief Guest Dr. Mihaljevic, dignitaries, ladies and gentlemen, Namaste and Good Evening; I too want to add my voice to welcome all of you to the 70th Republic Day celebration. The warmth of your friendship and camaraderie is more than enough to counter the cold outside. We are especially grateful for the presence of Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic the CEO and President of the world renowned Cleveland Clinic as our
Chief Guest. It is a great honor, Sir! While India became independent of the British rule in 1947, she became a full constitutional Republic after adopting a constitution on January 26, 1950.The constitution bestowed on all of India’s citizens the right of universal adult franchise and equal protection of the law. It is the anniversary of that event that we are celebrating today. This day is celebrated in India with great fanfare and a spectacular military parade showcasing not only India’s military powers, but also her ethnic diversity. India is a home to every religion and a myriad of ethnicities, languages and
cuisines. So, India is the first melting pot of the world. FICA, the Federation of sister organizations, is an organization that represents this harmonious whole. FICA is the apex organization of the Indian diaspora in North East Ohio. So this is YOUR organization; please support it by becoming a Life Member, or at least, join the annual membership.
FICA aims to form connections with all of Cleveland’s various ethnic and religious communities. FICA stood with our Jewish brothers and sisters in their hour of grief following the shooting of innocent worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh FICA, among its many initiatives, is especially proud of Project Seva that helps the neediest in the Greater Cleveland area, and Shiksha Daan, or the gift of education, which initially offered free tutoring to refugee children but now has expanded to welcome all of Cleveland’s children regardless of ethnicity, religion or national origin.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees of FICA, I again thank you for coming today. With warm regardsSudarshan R. SatheChairmanFICA Board of Trustees

FICA Republic Day Remarks by Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic
FICA’s Essay Contest 2019
Do you know what happened to the first plastic bottle ever made? Do you know why the average temperature of Lake Erie is on the rise? Do you know what Minamata disease is? In an effort to find answers to these questions, the Federation of India Community Associations (FICA) invited kids from the Indian community from all over Cleveland to explore the current issues related to environment. We organized an essay contest on the topic “What does pollution mean to you?” The contest was to commemorate India’s 70th Republic Day.
I would like to share what our kids feel about this topic:
According to Anshika, Pollution is that purple in the sea of black, first unnoticeable, but if enough is added, it will cause the entire color to change. In a room filled with light, pollution is that one lightbulb out, causing the entire room to darken. And little Nikita said that due to excessive trash, animals can mistake our garbage for food. Nine year old Bidwat says that when his flight from Delhi to Chicago was cancelled, it led him to questions regarding our planet. The contest, the first one held by FICA, was an attempt to tap into the young minds in our community.
PLEASE SUPPORT FICA!
The Federation of India Community Associations (FICA) is the voice of the Asian Indian community in Cleveland. We
are a registered non-profit organization under the IRS 501(c)(3) guidelines. We need your support for our service and other
activities and to publish this newspaper. 2000 copies are sent via email, and 2500 print copies are distributed to homes, libraries, and Indian groceries in the Cleveland area. Over 10,000 Asian
Indians and Americans read “The Lotus”. Please consider advertising with us, making a donation, or becoming a member
of FICA. Annual membership is $50 and lifetime is $500.

My thanks to the Federation of India Community Associations of Northeast Ohio - FICA Cleveland, for inviting me here today to celebrate your 70th Republic Day.It’s an honor to share this 70th Republic Day celebration with this cheerful and distinguished company. It’s a special honor to be introduced by Dr. Atul Mehta. He is a valued physician leader at Cleveland Clinic, and one of the world’s most respected physicians in his field.
Cleveland Clinic has a long history of relations with the people and medical professionals of India. The contribution of Indian-American physicians at Cleveland Clinic is beyond measuring. They have brought excellence to every specialty, and to mention them all would take forever.
I’d like to share a few interesting facts that you might find interesting on this holiday. As you know, Cleveland Clinic treats royalty and heads of state from around the world.
It turns out that our very first royal visitor came to us in 1928 from India. She was Begum Saheba of Manavadar. She arrived with a suite of 16 attendants. She was queen regent. Her son, a future king, came along with her. The family of Dr.
George Crile – one of our founders – took her under their wing. They described her as a poet and scholar – and she enjoyed her first Christmas celebration in their home.
In 1964, Cleveland Clinic welcomed one of its first and greatest Indian-American physicians to our staff. Dr. Sharad Deodhar was a brilliant pathologist and researcher. He served as chairman of our Department of Immunology. He was also was the founder and captain of the first-and-only Clinic Cricket Club.
We had many Indian residents and fellows in the 1950s and 60s. Several worked in the lab of Dr. F. Mason Sones – the father of coronary angiography and one of the most important figures in the history of heart care.
The first female surgeon at Cleveland Clinic was the Indian-American Dr. Gita Gidwany – hired in 1976.
The historic and present-day connections between Cleveland Clinic and the people and culture of India are deep and true. I speak for all of us at Cleveland Clinic when I say, long may they endure – and long may you continue to enrich the culture and community of Northeast Ohio.

The 43rd Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) is thrilled to unveil its mar-keting campaign: WELCOME. Aarati - an Offering of lighted lamp
Future Community Events
DR. RAMASWAMY SHARMA – SHIVA VISHNU TEMPLE, PARMA, OHIO
Aarati originates from the Sanskrit Aaratikam. It is also referred to as Nirajanam, Deeparadhana, haarati etc. All ritual worship are concluded in Aarati or Offering of lighted lamp. It has its origins in Yagna or the fire rituals performed since ancient times. The word has two components Aa and Rati. Aa means until mukthi (free-dom), Rati means intense desire.
Mukthi is nothing but the realizati-on of our real nature. Srimad Bhag-avatam advocates Bhakti as a me-ans to Mukthi. It beautifully defines Mukthi in the 2nd canto 10th chapter 6th verse thus:Mukthir hitva anyatha rupam svar-upena vyavasthiti - Bhagavatham 2-10-6Mukti is the abiding of the individu-al in the true Self after negating all wrong notions about oneself.
Normally we take ourselves to be the physical body, which is why we tend to describe ourselves as fair, lean,
etc. We also sometime think that we are the mind and say I am happy or sad. But scriptures such as the Srimad Bhagavatam, Gita and Upanisahads emphatically declare that it is delusi-onal to think of body or mind as our-selves. They say that in reality we are Atman or Self and are unaffected by what is going on in the body or mind. The reason then for these affectations is due to Avidya or original ignorance. The Srimad Bhagavatham methodi-cally unfolds the knowledge of Self in simple terms resulting in the removal of self-ignorance or Avidya as explain-ed towards the conclusion of the text.Tat shrunvan su pathan vichara paro bhaktya vimuchyet narah - Bhag-avatham 12-13-18
A person who hears it from a traditio-nal teacher then reads it with devotion and meditates or thinks through it is freed by being established in the rea-lization that one is the Atman or Self. Thus, Aarati like all rituals is a pu-rificatory ceremony that is laid out in the scriptures for sanctifying the body, mind and intellect of an indivi-dual paving way to Self-Knowledge through proper Self Enquiry.
