Extent Poverty in India•India is a nation of over 300 million poor people, which is the worlds largest number of poor people.•Lack of food and water.•Poverty is increasing by 8 million a year.•456 million live on less than $1.25 a day. •41.6% of the total population falls belowthe international poverty line.
• Life expectancy for male (60 years)
• Life expectancy for women (50-55 years)
• 31% of infants are born with low birth-weight
• One out of two children between the ages of 6 and 14 has no access to primary education.
• 500,000 children are forced into this commercial sex trade every year.
Causes• High population growth rate
• Illiteracy• Ignorance • Unemployment• Caste based politics• Discrimination• Large families
These are some of the Programs/strategies that have
been put in place in an attempt to alleviate poverty
• The targeted public distribution system (TPDS)
• Training of Rural Youth for Self Employment (TRYSEM)
• Development of Women and children in Rural Areas (DWCRA)
• Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY)
GLOBAL ACTORS
Work that needs to be further done to eliminate poverty
• Shelter• Reasonable amount
of food and water for each person
• Doctors located close by to rural areas
• Better facilities at school.
