WSITECHNOLOGY ADOPTED FOR 0.4 MLD CAPACITY SEWAGE TREATMENT
PLANT AT V.O.C NAGAR IN TIRUNELVELI CORPORATION
Introduction:
Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board have proposed to construct 432 nos of storyed tenements (G + 3) floor under centrally shared RAY scheme, sanctioned by the Government of India at V.O.C.Nagar in Tirunelveli corporation. Already 207 dwelling units are constructed under XIIIth
Finance scheme and allotted to the concerned beneficiaries in the scheme. As such 639 families will be accommodated in the scheme. The total water demand to the proposed scheme is about 4,31,325 liters per day including drinking water. It is proposed to construct a sewage treatment plant of capacity 400,000 liters per day (0.4 MLD) in this scheme to treat the sewage generated, since this area is not connected to the UGD system of the corporation. The treated sewage will meet the discharge standards laid down pollution control board and will be reused for Gardening, Horticulture and green belt development within the scheme area and the excess treated waste water shall be suitably disposed off into existing storm water drain if required.

However, it has been decided to setup a Sewage treatment plant of 1700m3 /day capacity. The treated sewage can be reused for Irrigation, Green belt development or for recharging of the groundwater. The biological sludge can be reused as manure for agriculture and for Gardens.
The sewage treatment plant shall be designed for the following characteristics

Proposed Sewage treatment plant
It is proposed to construct & install a sewage treatment plant of 400,000 liters/day of capacity. The raw sewage generated from the tenements shall be collected in the collection well. The raw sewage from the collection well shall be pumped by submersible pumps to the inlet of Screen channel anaerobic fixed film reactor of sewage treatment plant. The raw sewage will pass through the pretreatment units such as Screen channel and grit channel for removal of large floating solids and sand particles. The pretreated sewage shall be collected in the balancing tank for flow and strength equalization. Air blowers shall be provided to supply of oxygen for keeping sewage from becoming septic and keep the solids in suspension. The sewage from the balancing tank shall be pumped by horizontal centrifugal pumps to the inlet of UASBR/AFFR in the first stage. The pretreated sewage will undergo anaerobic decomposition in Fixed Film Reactor and from there it is taken to an Extended Aeration System. Aspirating aerators of suitable capacity shall be provided for maintaining aerobic conditions in the tank. Sewage, after being aerobically stabilized under properly maintained MLSS, flow through to the settling tank. Settled sludge from the settler is withdrawn via pumps and re-circulated to maintain MLSS in the aeration tank. Surplus sludge is pumped to the Sludge Drying Beds for disposal. Overflow from the settling tank is taken to chlorine contact tank for disinfection and sent for disposal. Two nos. lagoons

WSIshall be provided to store the treated sewage prior to reuse within the village for Irrigation and Gardening.
The Excess sludge of about 100.0 Kg/day shall be pumped to an aerobic digester cum thickener for solids reduction and volume reduction. The thickened sludge shall be transferred to the Centrifuge for dewatering. Standby provision for sludge drying beds is also made available for use during centrifuge maintenance. The sludge shall be dried in the sludge drying beds and the dried cake can be used as manure for the green belt within the Scheme area.
Polishing treatment:-
Total of the treated sewage shall be passed through Multimedia filter for removal of organic and inorganic matters. The filters shall be back washed once in a day for removal of trapped fine solids. The treated polished sewage shall be taken in to a sump for further usage inside the scheme area. Chlorine is added in the sump for disinfections before discharge outside the campus.

The sewage treatment scheme proposed shall have the following process units for producing the good quality treated sewage that can be disposed of in to the drain and or reused for non-potable purposes.
