Introduction

In this project we want learnt a lot of things of Florida. We are going to search for some things about the economy, culture, history, society... We will select the important information and make a written part, we make a poster with some pictures and some information, a t-shirt of Florida and for finish the project we will present an exposition, Who wants to be millionaire.

1.GEOGRAPHY

1.1 Florida is a state located in the southeast of the United States. It is bordered to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the north by Alabama and Georgia and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.

1.2 Its capital is Tallahassee, also there are some important cities to mention as Jacksonville, the most populous, Miami and Orlando, the best known, or other no less important as Melbourne, Daytona Beach, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Pensacola, St. Augustine, Lakeland.

1.3 FORM OF GOVERNMENT The government of Florida is

a constitutional republic with three branches of government: the branch consisting of the Governor of Florida ; the legislative branch, the Florida Legislature, consisting of the Senate and House; and the judicial branch consisting of the Supreme Court of Florida and lower courts. The state also allows direct participation of the electorate by initiative, referendum, and ratification.

1.4 IMPORTANT GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES The climate of Florida is tempered,

North of Lake Okeechobee, the prevalent climate is humid subtropical while coastal areas south of the lake (including the Florida Keys) have a true tropical climate.

1.5 FLORA AND FAUNA Generally, Florida has seven floral zones:

flatwoods, scrublands, grassy swamps, savannas, salt marshes, hardwood forests (hammocks), and pinelands.The state is known for its wide variety of palms including royal and coconut. Although pine has the most commercial importance. Florida once claimed more than 80 land mammals. Florida's bird population includes many resident and migratory species like the mockingbird that was named the state bird in 1927. The peninsula is famous for its marine life: scores of freshwater and saltwater fish, rays, shrimps, live coral reefs, and marine worms.

2. HUMAN GEOGRAPHY/DEMOGRAPHY

2.1 Languages spoken: In 2005, in Florida the 74.54% of the citizens spoke English at home as a first language.The 18.65% spoke Spanish, and the 1.73% spoke French Creole. The 25.45% of Florida's population that are five years and older, spoke different dialects of English. There are over 150 types of students speak English in their home.

2.2 Most of the citizens of Florida are Protestant but also there are people that are Catholic and much of south Florida have a different beliefs, some of them are Jewish. Florida's current religious affiliations are shown in the table below:

- Protestant 40% - Baptist 9%- Methodist 6% - Pentecostal 3% - Roman Catholic 26% - Jewish 3%- Other religions 3%- Non – Religious 16%

The state had the third largest illegal immigrant population in the country in 2009. In 2010, illegal immigrants constituted an estimated 5.7% of the population. This was the sixth highest percentage of any state in the country. There were an estimated 675,000 illegal immigrants in Florida in 2010.There were 186,102 military retirees living in the state in 2008.

The United States dollar, also referred to as the American dollar, is the official currency of the United States of America, so the dollar is the official currency of Florida. It is divided into 100 smaller units called cents or pennies (sign: $; code: USD; also abbreviated US$).

3.2 Natural resources and agriculture

Florida's economy was based especially of sugarcane, citrus, tomatoes, and strawberries, Florida produces the majority of citrus fruit in the U.S.A and the majority of the production in the state is destined for producing orange juice.

The environmental impact of agriculture, especially water pollution, is a major issue in Florida today, fishing was a $6 billion industry.

3.3 Forms of industry.

The state produces about 75% of the phosphate required by farmers in the United States and is the second largest industry in agriculture, citrus, fruit, especially oranges, are a major part of the economy.

Florida has developed a sizable aerospace industry, another major economic engine in Florida is the United States Military.

3.4 TOURISM Tourism makes up the largest sector of the state

economy. Warm weather and hundreds of miles of beaches attract about 60 million visitors to the state every year.

The Walt Disney World Resort is the largest vacation resort in the world. Many beach towns are also popular tourist destinations, particularly in the winter months.

Florida State football is college football have a legendary coach, a tradition of excellence and a record of dominance that have a consecutive record of finishing in the Top 5.

The town center, tadition Square, is also the heart of community life. The center of entertainment concerts, seasonal festivals like Italian Festival, WestFest, the annual Holiday Lights, Festival of Palms, Festival of the Rosary, Official detour and the Floridian week.

Everglades National Park is a national park in the U.S. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance. This park is one of three only locations in the world that appear on all three lists.

Disney's property includes five golf courses. The four 18-hole golf courses are the Palm, the Magnolia, Lake Buena Vista and Osprey Ridge.

The city attracts a high number of musicians, singers, actors, dancers, and orchestral players. Miami has numerous orchestras, symphonies and performing art conservatories.

Orlando is nicknamed "The City Beautiful" and its symbol is the fountain at Lake Eola. The city is known for the Walt Disney World Resort .

4.2 MIAMI ART DECO This type of art was created by some

important artist in Paris after the universal exposition 1900.

In 1979 Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world and comprises hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures built between 1923 and 1943.

Art Deco Weekend is an annual festival which takes place each January on Miami Beach.

Britanny Snow was born in Tampa, Florida. She is 25 years old and is recognized for films like Hairspray or series like Law and order.

Armando Christian Pérez, commonly known Pitbul, was born the 14th of January of 1981 in Miami. He is a famous singer in the world.

5. HISTORY5.1 5 historical events:

1497-1514 Europeans see Florida for the first time. A Spanish map of 1502 depicts a peninsula like Florida. Peter Martyr writes in 1514 of a land near the Bahamas with water of eternal youth.

1513 -  In 1513, Spaniard Juan Ponce de León became the European to explore Florida.(Pascua Florida" (feast of the flowers))

1783 - During the Revolutionary War, Spanish troops entered Florida and repossessed the land. Settlers attempted revolution several times against Spain.

1845 - Florida was admitted to the Union as a slave state on March 3, 1845.

1920 - Depression hit the economy in Florida during the 1920s. Hurricanes swept through the state destroying property and killing hundreds of people.

6.1 Typical Food: The typical diet of the population of Florida is like

the Mediterranean diet, is based on fruit and fish: Orange, Avocado, Coconut, Key Lime, Kumquat, Hearts of Palm, Mango, Papaya/Paw Paw, Passion Fruit, Spiny Lobster, Stone Crabs.

6.2 IS A HEALTHY DIET? Our conclusions of the diet are that is a

healthy diet, because is based about fruit and her healthy properties and her vitamins and fish and her proteins.

ConclusionWe learned a lot of things of Florida and we know more about English language. It has been an interesting project because there are some things of the country that had surprise us and that we didn’t know and we will go to Florida some day!
