Dogme 95’:

For this brief I set out originally to film my two dogs eating all of the spelt out word ‘Munch’ until it was completely eaten, after a critique with my class I was given a great idea that I should reverse the video and instead have it look like the dogs are spelling out a word and trying to commu-

nicate with me. I re-filmed the video twice and even though I feel that it gets better each time I still feel that it would work better if it was re-filmed once more and some slight improvements were made but I ran out of time.

This is for the first brief of the year, we had to design a peice of work that represents ourselves. I created this

poster with illustrations of items that I think represent me, such as my car, my favourite television shows , my imac,

going to the cinema and two artists that inspire me.

Ed Ruscha

Ed Ruscha’s work is fresh, vibrant and exactly the type of art work that I enjoy. When looking into his back catalogue of work I found myself becoming more and more interested

as his style relates closly with my current work.

Jenny Holzer

Jenny Holzer’s work in very experimental and captivating. I

found myself lost in it and out of all the artists I looked at for the

project found her the greatest for inspiration, her piece where she writes on skin above especially.

Art and Text - Dave Beech & Charles Harrison

I purchased this book and was captivated by the vast amount of amazing material it had

inside it. I took a lot of inspiration from artists in this book.

These were created using ink and water they came from experimenting with the words ‘lie’ and ‘white

lie’. I think that the end results were better than expected and this lead to the use of the same “I love

you” crossed out phrase to create a lino print.

I added text onto the water colour backgroud to final-ize the image. I think the finished product creates an

emotional effect on the viewer as it looks like the ink is the lie itself.

This is a lino print I created while experi-menting with the skills I have picked up

over the last couple of years.

I created these lino prints in response to the wa-ter and ink experiments I have previously done.

I used the same phrase “I love you” which is crossed out along with “I tell lies”.

These are two posters that I created from the first few stories I gathered early on. I choose to simply use pen and

paper to create a couple of quick experiments to get my brain into gear. I find that the type works well with the

phrases and sets the tone.

These are pieces of my secondary research that I collected via asking an array of people of different ages and stored in

a little black notebook.

I overlapped the pages of my research to create the images above. I did so to show the end product of what can happened when you tell too many lies or

white lies and how muddled things can become very quickly.

I shot these pictures using my Diana 35mm camera. I used the setting which allows two shots to be taken on one frame. I experimented with both the flash and natural daylight. I overlapped handwritten text with

phrases of lies and white lies that I had been told firsthand to create one image.

I used fridge magnets to experiment with different phrases that relate to my project. I used my Diana 35mm camera to shoot the pictures

and the end product came out with some of the frames naturally over-lapping each other.

Little White Lies book:

so uploaded the finished version onto issu to show you. The book itself is a collection of all of the pieces I created

through mixing photography and type.

Final Major Project Proposal:

For my final major project I would like to look more deeply in depth into how people socially interact with each other and how they themselves cre-ative a distortion in their lives whether it be the truth they tell themselves about their daily actions or how they fabricate a reason for why they tell a lie or do an action and whether that has a positive or a negative effect.

After having looked into lies and how people often see it as just a complete distortion of facts and are alright with that level of deceit. The fabrication of peoples imaginations when creating a lie sparks an interest in me that I want to lead into my final major project and look more deeply into the fal-sification of peoples lives and the lies they themselves live on a daily basis.

Different directions that I would like to go with this project through experi-menting are quite similar to my current project on lies as I would firstly as secondary research ask a number of people about their social interactions whether it was a good experience or bad one and collect those quotes and memories. From there I could photograph people interacting through using different methods of photography and then look into the psychological aspect of peoples lives such as how they socially interact with each other depending on whether they are alone and on the computer or with other people doing things such as drinking alcohol or on a romantic date etc.

Evaluation:

This year I have really seen a more steady theme within my work such as with my growing interest in photography and more specifically my interest with using film and illustration. I also see a more consistent theme within finding my style of graphic design and this helps me with finding where I could belong in the future within the graphic design industry.

I choose to do my independent project on lies because I had recently told a lie which I was caught out on as I myself am a terrible liar. I started notic-ing the white lies that people tell throughout the day and then from there started to become more and more interested on what the difference is be-tween a white lie and a lie. The social myth that white lies are to help peo-ple isn’t true as no lie can actually help anyone as in the end it just makes everything more messy emotionally and harder to handle both when hiding it and if the truth comes out. Through my research I have found that most people do not like to tell which lies that they have told and would rather hide it away and forget about it then admit openly about either having told an actual lie or the details of the lie itself.

I combined my interest of photography and more specifically lomogra-phy within the project and am happy with the results. I had gathered a large amount of secondary research through asking people what lies they have told in the past both on facebook through private messaging them and through going to my place of work with my notepad and asking both co-workers and customers which left me with a large array of answers to choose from when putting both photo and text together.

I used a number of lomography cameras such as a mini diana and a fisheye instead of a standard film camera because I wanted to use my time given to experiment with new techniques that I could use for my final major project and have concluded that the style that lomography cameras produce suits my needs very well and that I plan to use them within my final major proj-ect.
