Swampsoftengetabadrap(thinkpolitics).Butthey’re also a good metaphor to explain how easy it can be to get bogged down in dangerous habits.

When it comes to communicating about aging, the FrameWorks Institute uses a swamp to explain the unproductive ways our nation talks about growing older.

FrameWorks has been working with NCOA and seven other national aging organizations to reframe the story of aging. Step one is to avoid getting stuck intheswampofageistthinking.Herearesomespots to avoid.

Us vs. ThemToo often, we talk about older adults as a different group of people—separate from ourselves. In reality, we’re all aging, and we all will face similar issues and challenges as we grow older.

And regardless of age, most of us want the same things—good health, economic security, and the ability to live independently. So, when we talk about what older adults want and need, it’s more productive to frame it as a collective need for everyone in our society.

Here’sanexample.Whetheryou’readvocatingfora teen center or a senior center, the values can

ring true for all generations. Take a look at how the values at the Pro Deo Youth Center mirror the values of the Duxbury Senior Center and many other senior centers:

“We believe that there should be a safe, fun, empowering environment for teens to grow and develop, and that the basic needs of teens need to be met if we expect everyone to function in the community in a healthy manner.”

“Our seniors will have meaningful opportunities to enjoy life, interact with the community and preserve their mental and physical well-being.”

Ideal vs. Perceived “Real”We’ve all seen the ads. The “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” ads that depict getting older as an inevitable and irrevocable downfall marked by physical deterioration, decline in mental capacity, and dependence.

Butprofessionalswhoworkwitholderadultsknowthis is not the full story. Yes, older adults face challenges—justlikepeopleofallages.Butolderadults also have a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to contribute to society, and they can and want to stay active and self-sufficient.

When trying to explain what older adults need and to gain support for public programs, it can be tempting to play the fear or sympathy card.

Butwhatifweflippedthescript?Whatifweappealedtopeople’ssenseofjusticeinstead?

We all deserve to maintain our health, security, and independence. That means we have a collective responsibility to work together to ensure that everyone—especially those who are struggling—have access to needed services and supports to make this a reality.

Draining the Swamp of Ageism

FatalismIt’s also easy to believe that the problems of an aging society are just too huge to solve. Some say that Social Security, for example, is doomed because there simply aren’t enough workers to support the growing number of beneficiaries.

Butthisfatalisticwayofcommunicatingstopsmostlisteners in their tracks. When a problem seems too overwhelming, people shut down.

What works better, according to FrameWorks, is to focus on why the problem exists—and then outline potential solutions. Where does the process break down and what are achievable, incremental steps we cantaketofixit?

A Well-Framed NarrativeTo build understanding about the real story of aging, shift people’s perspective, and generate support for our solutions, we need to change the narrative. FrameWorks offers this formula for an effective story:

1.Whydoesthismatter?Startbytalkingabouta shared value people hold. In its research, FrameWorks found that the values of Ingenuity (innovative solutions) and Justice (doing what is fair) worked best.

2.Howdoesthiswork?Ifsomethingisnotworking,whynot?Usemetaphorsandexamplestoexplainthe problem and why it needs to change.

3.Whatcanwedoaboutit?Endbyprovidingsolutions. Show what will work and how.

Reframing aging is not something any of us can accomplishaloneorquickly.Buttogether, wecanbegin to sidestep the alligators in the swamp—and tell our story in a way that more people will listen.

Caregiver Connection

Alcaresforhismother,Betty, inthehomethatheand his wife, Laura, share with their two teenage children.Bettyhasbeenlivingwiththemforafewyears,eversinceAl’sfatherpassedaway.Bettyhas Alzheimer’s Disease and struggles with daily cares, taking medications, and remembering to eat meals. Al and Laura continue to work – Al works full-time from home and Laura works outside of the home. Al was able to begin working from home when his mother moved in with them, however, it has become more challenging as his mother’s care needs increase and he faces more interruptionsthroughouttheday.Heisworriedabout his work performance and balancing that with providing adequate care for his mother throughout the day. On top of this stress, his two high school children are involved in sports, piano, and dance and have expressed that they are saddened that both parents cannot attend some of their events due to someone needing to remain homewithBetty.AlandLauraarebothfeelingpulled in multiple directions.

This is a fictional situation; however, it is an example of circumstances in which we may find ourselves or a loved one. Caregiving is more common than we realize and the stresses that caregiving can involve are very real. Fortunately, there are programs designed to assist caregivers.

One of these programs is the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Family Caregiver Support Program (AFCSP). This program is available locally through the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin.

Eligibility requirements include:

1. The care recipient has a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementia

2. The care recipient lives in a home setting (not in a facility)

3. The care recipient has annual income of $48,000 or less (care recipient and spouse).

This program is intended to offer support to caregivers by providing reimbursement for some services that help the caregiver in caring for a loved one. Common examples of reimbursable services include: respite care or home care services,

emergency response or alarm systems, home safety modifications, caregiver counseling services, adult day services, and Meals on Wheels. The caregiver also receives information on caregiving options and resources and regular contact from a caregiver support coordinator. Caregiver support coordinators have specific training and knowledge about the unique needs of those in a caregiving role. With this support, caregivers have someone to share concerns with, ask questions of, and someone to turn to during both the joys and challenges of caregiving.

Al and Laura were referred to a Caregiver Support Coordinator at their local ADRC by a nurse case managerwhoworkswithBetty’sphysician.Thefamily was enrolled in AFCSP. Al and Laura were referred to a local support group that they find very helpful. They were also given local resource information, which assisted them in hiring a professional caregiver a few days per week as well asenrollingBettyinadultdaycenterservicestwohalfdaysperweek.Bettyisabletobereimbursedfor the cost of some of these services through the AFCSP program, which allows her personal

savings to last longer. Al is able to meet his work expectations and have time to go with Laura to attend events their children participate in, knowing Bettyisbeingcaredfor.Inaddition,Alhasregularcontact with a Caregiver Support Coordinator to receive ongoing support and resources as needed.

With additional sources of support, caregivers may feel more empowered and more able to care for loved ones at home. Although there may not be solutions to all the challenges that a caregiver may encounter, having assistance through the Alzheimer’s Family Caregiver Support Program can offer resources and opportunities during the caregiving journey.

BRIDGEThe

The Aging and Disability

Resource Center of Central Wisconsin

is not just for older adults.

Students with disabilities will eventually leave school and enter the adult world. This is not an option, it will happen and the Resource Specialists at the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin (ADRC-CW) can help to navigate the process. Resource Specialists can provide students and families with information, choices, and direction when planning for the future. This is a very important service as studies have proven that choices are a major factor in empowering and improving the lives of adults with disabilities.

LauraOwensoftheExceptionalEducationDepartment at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee contributed to a study that showed a direct link between the ability to make choices and quality of life. The ADRC-CW provides students and families with resources and assistance in understanding these resources so they can make informed decisions on the future of these young adults with disabilities. Allowing individuals with disabilities to be responsible for making their own

choices in life is critical. Limiting opportunities to make choices leads people with disabilities to feel stressed and diminished. Making it so important to ensure opportunities to choose when planning for the future.

Resource Specialists at the ADRC-CW can begin working with students who are 17 years and six months old. Together the Resource Specialist, the student, and the student’s family can meet to review the opportunities for programs and services available to the student. This approach to linking school and adult living a much needed bridge and leads to a positive quality of life experience. If you or someone you know is in need of information regarding transition services, please contact the ADRC-CW to speak to a Resource Specialist.

THANK YOUThe Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin has a mission to prevent, delay and lessen the impacts of aging and disabilities in our communities. We cannot achieve our mission alone and appreciate the communities’ support. Thank you to the following donors:

•VirginiaBrula•Lon&JanetNewman•BayHeatingService•DaveandCarolFelch

Thank you!

The ADRC-CW accepts monetary donations which can either be earmarked for a specific purpose or be used to enhance the overall services to our customers. For more information, call 888-486-9545.

CentralWisconsinresident,GinnyBrula, recentlysent a donation to the ADRC-CW for the Meals on Wheels program in memorial of her aunt Arlene Schmidt. Ginny shared the following story: “My Aunt Arlene delivered Meals on Wheels for 31 years in Garner, Iowa. She loved volunteering. Aunt Arlene was one of the first people to have a heart valve replacement in 1967 at the age of 32. She was a dedicated volunteer and she even requested donations to Meals on Wheels. She was very family oriented, and very giving of herself to others. She recently died at the age of 85, and I wanted to make a donation to our local Meals on Wheels program in her memory.”

Thank you for donating to the ADRC-CW Meals on Wheels program! Your contribution supports continuation of this vital service to many homebound older adults in our communities.

It can also be not letting someone sit at the table for an activity or at a meal, openly making fun of another’s clothing, hobbies, religion, economic background, sexual orientation that are different or as extreme as verbal or physical abuse such as yelling hitting, pushing, kicking another person and attributing the action to an accident, stealing/destroying property.

AmIdescribingchildren?Teens?BelieveitornotAging Center.com says that people don’t always outgrow the cattiness and aggressiveness of adolescence. Studies are finding bullying behavior by elderly at senior meal sites, in senior housing building, assisted livings, senior centers, and senior living communities. And, there is an increase in bullyingbehaviorsasBabyBoomersage, moveto more communal settings and are more involved in senior community settings. An AARP March 2012Bulletinsaidthatbetween10%and20%ofolder adults living in senior living communities are mistreated by their peers and that the behaviors are mostly unreported.

Bothmenandwomencanbullybutwithdifferentstyles. Men are more direct verbally abusing someone to their face or may take a physical approach. Women are more likely to be passive aggressive or do things behind someone’s back such a gossip, spreading rumors, snide insults/belittling jokes. Research shows that some people have been bullies all their lives. In other people the underlying reason is a need for power and control because they have trouble tolerating other’s differences, lack empathy, and have few positive social relationships.

Other reasons might be because as they experience loss of loved ones, and friends, suffer illnesses and deteriorating health and are feeling more helpless or less in control and powerless also feeling they are losing their independence. Sometimes bullies are or have been victims of abuse themselves. Studies say bullying is not a normal part of the aging process. Beingcrabby, crankyorirritablebecauseofpain, lack of sleep or grief is not bullying.
