Independent Contractor Pay Increase O ver the last several years, the EPA has mandated that Class A trucks increase their emissions standards. As a result, truck manufac- turing costs have increased. To offset the burden of ris- ing truck costs that inde- pendent contractors are experiencing, C.R England decided to increase the pay rate amongst independent contractors beginning on February 1, 2007. ICs in the England National and England Logistics Divi- sions will experience this 2¢ per mile pay raise in each level of the pay scale. The pay scale now ranges from 89¢ to $1.52 per mile. These rates depend on the complete load length. This announcement does not apply to other driver di- visions, which have differing pay programs. In addition, company drivers do not bear the burden of rising truck costs that independent con- tractors are experiencing. If you are an independent contractor and have ques- tions about this new pay raise, please contact your driver manager for details. We thank each IC who is taking control of his or her business and finding suc- cess. New Business on the HorizonOn April 22, an unprec-

edented event will take place as C.R.England hauls our first load out of the Wal-mart distribution center in Cheyenne Wyoming.

The operation will consist of 105 trucks, making this the largest dedicated fleet op-eration here at CR England. The business will consist of dsd (direct store deliveries) out of the Wal-mart distri-bution center into Denver (and surrounding) markets. Eight operational personnel will be staffed at the distri-bution center also. Christian Porter will be filling the role of account manager and will relocate to Cheyenne in March to put the wheels into motion.

In order to successfully make this work, teamwork is critical. Earlier in 2006, CRE established a dedi-

cated fleet out of McCarran Nevada. Many challenges were overcome during the building phase of this fleet. It was not a one group/divi-sion accomplishment. The support and legwork of our National division and the efforts and dedication of the drivers affiliated with the Wal-mart McCarran fleet, were critical in over-coming the hurdles. This effort and teamwork was an attributing factor in the de-cision to award England the

Cheyenne business.

We will need to pull togeth-er as a team and company to comply and succeed the expectations of this new business. We look forward to this exciting endeavor

and the opportunities it will bring to all of us, especially our drivers.

We are actively recruiting drivers for this account. If you are interested, please contact Donna McDaniel

(dedicated recruiter) at ext 4554. This is an ideal op-portunity for solo drivers domiciled in the WY and CO areas, as well as any others interested in driving in a dedicated fleet in these areas.

Some Tips For Dealing With Layover

Layover. Why does it happen? What is be-ing done to combat it?

The first way to combat layover is to under-stand it. Layover happens for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, unex-pected weather or natural disasters, truck breakdowns, unseasonable weather causing changes in growing cycles, economic down-turns, and shifts in market demand or capac-ity. Any of these can occur without notice and very unexpectedly.

So what market conditions are we currently encountering? Experts report a slight eco-nomic downturn with regards to customer inventory levels. This downturn is industry wide and not specific to C.R. England but to all trucking companies.

How long will this downturn in inventory last? Is there a light at the end of this tun-nel? While the reduction has been painful to truckers, it should translate into more freight as inventory levels are eventually re-stocked. Once inventory rebuilding begins, we believe truckload carriers are the most immediate beneficiary. How do we weather the storm until things re-bound? How do you protect your business and your bottom line? Here are a few tips to reduce costs and increase revenues.

Conserve fuel by reducing idle time. Use the fuel optimizer, participate in the fuel cap pro-gram, and avoid unnecessary miles, etc...

Maintain your vehicle to avoid costly repairs down the road.

Save a little extra so when unexpected layover occurs, you’re prepared.

Good communication with your DM will help you understand changes in markets and ship-ping patterns.

Try to get ahead of your load and stay ahead. You might be able to deliver your load early, thus freeing you up sooner for the next load.

Find alternatives to fast food. Look for oppor-tunities to shop at discount supermarkets for better buys.

If you happen to be victim to layover, be posi-tive. By understanding it and finding areas to reduce costs on the road and increase rev-enues, you will be ahead of the game.

Knights of the Road

Lamine Badji (55132)We received a phone call from a West Valley City, UT police dispatcher on December 15. She told us about driving down the road on I-215 and see-ing a min-van cross over lanes of traffic to take an off ramp onto hwy 201. The dispatcher was just sure that our truck was going to hit this ve-hicle because the van crossed over right in front of the truck. She went on to say that our driver did such a wonderful job of keeping the truck un-der control and not hitting the van. The driver is to be commended. Thanks Lamine for your good work and being safe.

Dear Friends,In our time of need, after the Salvation Army An-gel Tree Program in December 2006, we were having a problem finding someone to move the semi trailers we use at this time of year. With the grace of God, your company offered this service at no charge to us. For this wonderful act, we at the Salvation Army are truly grateful. We would especially like to thank England driver Karl Garrett for his assistance.Thank you and God bless.Sincerely,Majors James and Laura SullivanJulie Ann Hopkins – Angel Tree CoordinatorAngel Tree StaffRay Young – Dispatch SupervisorThe Salvation ArmySalt Lake City, UT

Support In MaintenanceWe would like to highlight the

Body shop, the Paint Depart-ment, the Qualcomm/New Tractor Preparation Department and the Lease Turn in Department.

These are support areas that allow equipment to flow in and out and within the company in a timely man-ner.

If someone is so unfortunate as to get in an accident, the first person they would contact in maintenance is a fellow by the name of Sam Weber. He will look at the damage and give an estimate of what that repair will cost. Sometimes the insurance company will give instructions to get the trac-tor repaired at an outside vendor.

When we do get bodywork we have a Body Shop with 22 employees to get the job done. They work on from 60 to 80 pieces of equipment a month. Their work comes from wrecks, turned in leased tractors or trade tractors

that have to meet specific require-ments.

Our Qualcomm/New tractor prep de-partment gets the new tractors ready for service. They install all the stick-ers, the Qualcomm unit, the Heater and all the safety items that go into the tractor. If you have a major prob-lem that the shop can’t repair, these are the guys that can do it.

The Paint Bay, which has 4 employ-

ees, can paint as many as 9 trucks per day along with assorted truck body parts.

The Lease Turn in department has 17 employees. They get the tractors

ready for release back in the fleet. They would like everyone to know that the better they take care of the tractor the less they will spend on re-pairs when the tractor is turned in.

Make A Positive DifferenceHave you ever heard of

the Adopt-A-Driver pro-gram?

This fun program is offered to all elementary schools in the Granite School District in Salt Lake. Here’s how it works. You will be given a school and a class to con-tact. From there you can go ahead and start sending post cards, about one (1) per week. Tell them about your travels, places you see and

other things that you want them to know. The kids love to write back to the driver and ask questions.

C.R. England provides a wall map for the classroom and a small map for each stu-dent so they can follow their driver around the country. Many students like to write back to ‘their’ driver! Some teachers have sent letters back to our office, thanking us for their driver who made

learning fun for students. Some teachers find this a

fun way to teach English, letter writing and United States geography!

To those ‘adopted’ drivers who have helped teach the students about this great land, THANK YOU! We ask that each driver visit their “adopted” class at least one time during the school year, just so the kids can meet you and see your truck! You can visit the school more often as you ar-

range it with the teacher. Have school lunch with the kids. They all enjoy that!

Contact Jeanie Bowen at [email protected], or ext. 3824 if you are inter-ested in being “adopted”. Make a positive difference in the life of a child. Who knows, maybe you will be a positive influence in help-ing a child to become an England driver one day!

The Urgent Need For Organs

• More than 93,000 men, women and children currently await life-saving transplants.

• Every 12 minutes, another name is added to the national transplant waiting list.

• An average of 18 people die each day due to the lack of available organs for transplant.

How can You Donate?•Indicate your wish on your drivers license or state I.D. when you apply or renew it.

•Join the donor registry in your state.

•Complete a donor card and keep it with you.

•Put your wish to be a donor in your will or living will.

•Tell your family (very important). They may be consulted before donation.

You do not have to donate all of your organs; you may specify the ones you will offer. Neither age nor medical history should prevent you from becoming a donor.

At C. R. England, we strongly support organ, eye and tissue donation. You may sign up in the Salt Lake Office or go to www.yesutah.org and sign up on-line. If you would like to sign up through another state, go to organdonor.gov for informa-tion on how to access your state’s registry.
